I examine a recent interpretation of Friedrich Schiller’s Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man (1795) by Samantha Matherne and Nick Riggle in their two-part paper “Schiller on Freedom and Aesthetic Value” (2020/2021). At the beginning, I give an overview of Riggle’s own theory on aesthetic value. His “aesthetic communitarianism” consists in cultivation of individuality, promotion of aesthetic freedom, and generation of aesthetic community. Then I argue that Matherne and Riggle understand Schiller’s concept of beauty as a version of aesthetic communitarianism avant la lettre. Finally, I insist against Matherne and Riggle that Schiller’s theory of aesthetic value presupposes universal normativity of taste rather than appreciation of individuality.

Measuring physical quantities in the nanometric region inside single cells is of great importance for understanding cellular activity. Thus, the development of biocompatible, sensitive, and reliable nanobiosensors is essential for progress in biological research. Diamond nanoparticles containing nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVCs), referred to as fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs), have recently emerged as the sensors that show great promise for ultrasensitive nanosensing of physical quantities. FNDs emit stable fluorescence without photobleaching. Additionally, their distinctive magneto-optical properties enable an optical readout of the quantum states of the electron spin in NVC under ambient conditions. These properties enable the quantitative sensing of physical parameters (temperature, magnetic field, electric field, pH, etc.) in the vicinity of an FND; hence, FNDs are often described as “quantum sensors”. In this review, recent advancements in biosensing applications of FNDs are summarized. First, the principles of orientation and temperature sensing using FND quantum sensors are explained. Next, we introduce surface coating techniques indispensable for controlling the physicochemical properties of FNDs. The achievements of practical biological sensing using surface-coated FNDs, including orientation, temperature, and thermal conductivity, are then highlighted. Finally, the advantages, challenges, and perspectives of the quantum sensing of FND are discussed. This review article is an extended version of the Japanese article, In Situ Measurement of Intracellular Thermal Conductivity Using Diamond Nanoparticle, published in SEIBUTSU BUTSURI Vol. 62, p. 122–124 (2022).

【目 的】 加熱式タバコの煙や臭いによる頭痛の実態を明らかにするためにアンケート調査を実施した。【方 法】 インターネットでアンケート調査を行った。対象は20~40歳代の頭痛持ちの男女で、加熱式タバコ使用者に限定していない。【結 果】 有効回答は627人で、片頭痛は163人、その他の頭痛は464人だった。片頭痛群はその他の頭痛群と比較して、頭痛が日常生活に及ぼす影響が大きく、紙巻タバコだけでなく加熱式タバコの煙や臭いにより頭痛が引き起こされる人が有意に多かった。片頭痛群のうち、非喫煙者(117人)でも紙巻タバコだけでなく加熱式タバコの煙や臭いにより頭痛が引き起こされる人がいたが、喫煙者(46人)ではさらに多かった。【結 論】 頭痛患者のなかで、片頭痛患者は、喫煙や受動喫煙による紙巻タバコや加熱式タバコの煙や臭いにより頭痛を誘発しやすいことが明らかとなった。紙巻タバコと加熱式タバコを区別せずに禁煙環境を整備する必要がある。

In view of the rapid increase of nuclear energy facilities such as power plants, fuel-reprocessing plants and so forth, the safe control of the disposal of radioactive wastes into the sea has been and will be of great concern in the world. The present paper deals with the following matters; (1) historical background information of radioactive contamination of the sea due to the past military use of atomic energy, (2) natural and artificial radioactivity in the sea, (3) general features of the behaviour of radioactive nuclides in marine environment, (4) safe management of coastal discharge of radioactive liquid wastes, (5) disposal of solid radioactive wastes into deep sea bottom, and (6) problem on international control of radioactivity release in marine environment.

研究の目的 本研究では、自己記録とフィードバックの手続きが、聴覚障害学生に対するノートテイクの基礎的なスキルの獲得に及ぼす効果を比較・検討した。研究計画 2パターンのABCデザインを使用し、ベースライン、自己記録またはフィードバック、自己記録とフィードバックの順に条件を導入した。場面 大学の模擬講義場面で実験を行った。参加者 ノートテイクの経験のない大学生10名。独立変数 採点シートを用いた自己記録、およびグラフによる得点率のフィードバック。行動の指標 (1)正確さ;採点シートの得点率、(2)速さ;1分あたりの入力文字数、(3)ノートテイクの質に関する主観的評価。結果 フィードバックによって速さは上昇したが、正確さはほとんど増加しなかった。自己記録の導入後に正確さは漸増し、全員が達成基準を満たした。結語 結果は、ノートテイクのスキルの改善には、得点率を提示するだけでは不十分であり、自己記録が実質的な効果をもつことを示した。

Objective: Regional disparities in health services is a crucial problem in Cambodia. Particularly, a number of NCD risk factors are more common among the rural poor. Fortunately, 80% of NCDs are preventable and cost-effective interventions exist. Therefore, health care needs assessments regarding NCDs in poor rural areas are vital. The object of this pilot study was to identify health care needs regarding NCDs among residents in poor rural areas in Cambodia.Materials and Methods: A medical health check-up and questionnaire survey were conducted with 208 rural residents who participated in a free health check-up and doctor consultation in Kaoh Peam Reang.Results: One hundred sixteen (55.8%) females were included in the total sample size of 208 participants; the majority (52.9%) were between 35 and 65 years of age. Twenty-five participants (12%) were current smokers, and 44 (21%) were current alcohol drinkers. Eighty (38.5%) participants had hypertension and 44 participants (21.2%) had a body mass index over 25. Alcohol drinking and smoking habits were more common among men. The five most frequent medical complaints were headache (18.3%), lower back pain (14.4%), foot and hand pain (13.9%), joint pain (10.1%), and difficulty breathing (10.1%).Conclusions: The medical need for doctor consultations regarding chronic disease and chronic pain might be higher in poor rural areas in Cambodia.

【目的】本研究の目的は,音叉を用いた振動覚検査で転倒予測が可能であるかを検討することである。【対象】認知症および中枢神経疾患を除外した,歩行が可能な当院外来患者,通所リハビリテーション利用者で6ヵ月間追跡調査が可能であった62名である。【方法】音叉を用いた振動覚検査とTimed “Up & Go” Test,10m自由歩行時間,Modified-Functional Reach Testの4項目を実施した。転倒は測定日より6ヵ月間追跡し有無を確認した。統計処理は,転倒の有無により転倒群と非転倒群に分け比較を行った。また,各検査についてはROC曲線からカットオフ値を求め,精度を確認した。【結果】測定後6ヵ月間に転倒した対象者は22名(転倒率:35.5%)であった。転倒群と非転倒群の比較では,すべての検査において非転倒群の成績が有意に優れていた。ROC曲線の曲線下面積では,振動覚検査が0.83で,他の検査と同等であった。振動覚検査のカットオフ値については5.5秒であり,感度は77%,特異度は68%,正答率は71%であった。【結語】音叉を用いた振動覚検査は,転倒予測の検査として有用であった。

本稿ではオンライン議論における談話行為を分類するモデルを提案する.提案モデルでは談話行為を分類するために,ニューラルネットワークを用いて議論のパターンを学習する.談話行為の分類において議論のパターンを取り入れる重要性は既存の研究においても確認されているが,対象としている議論に併せたパターン素性を設計する必要があった.提案モデルではパターン素性を用いずに,木構造およびグラフ構造を学習する層を用いて議論のパターンを学習する.提案モデルを Reddit の談話行為を分類するタスクで評価したところ,従来手法と比較して Accuracy で 1.5%,F1 値で 2.2 ポイントの性能向上を確認した.また,提案モデル内の木構造学習層およびグラフ構造学習層間の相互作用を確認するため,提案手法の中間層を注意機構を通じて分析した.
