[Purpose] Severe quadriceps weakness immediately after total knee arthroplasty can be problematic. The n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects against ischemia–reperfusion injury, whereas n-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids exert pro-inflammatory effects, thereby promoting ischemia–reperfusion injury. [Participants and Methods] We explored the efficacy of preoperative n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation against early quadriceps weakness among 20 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty (intervention group, n=10; control group, n=10). The intervention group received 645 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid) and 215 mg of docosahexaenoic acid daily for 30 days preoperatively. Serum eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and arachidonic acid levels were measured preoperatively. We compared serum derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites as oxidative stress biomarkers, knee circumference, thigh volume, knee pain during the quadriceps strength test, and quadriceps strength preoperatively and 4 days postoperatively to quantify the change. [Results] Preoperative n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation significantly increased the (eicosapentaenoic acid+docosahexaenoic acid)/arachidonic acid ratio in the intervention group. A significantly lower increase in quadriceps weakness was exhibited in the intervention group than in the control group. However, changes in oxidative stress, knee/thigh swelling, and knee pain during strength testing did not significantly differ between the two groups. [Conclusion] Preoperative n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation exhibited beneficial effects on quadriceps weakness immediately after total knee arthroplasty.

Population genetics theory of molecular evolution under a fluctuating environment was reviewed. Taking the Parity Model (a two allele model under a two state Markov environment) as a prototype model, a comprehensive picture of the stationary evolution under a joint effect of mutation, stochastic selection and random genetic drift due to a finite population size was studied both on the evolution rate and the genetic polymorphism. Besides the neutral mutaion model and the slightly deleterious model as its special cases, this model has a fluctuating evolution case where the evolution rate is approximated by the environment fluctuation rate. General formulas of evolution rate were given for the weak mutation limit and the infinitely large population case. Formula of the index of dispersion of substitution numbers was given for arbitrary jump Markov process model of wild type adaptive state. Power series solution method was developed to calculate the stationary distribution of the replicon frequency for the Parity Model.

生体リズム位相には個人差があり, 日中に活動しやすい朝型と夕方から夜間に活動しやすい夜型があることが知られている。そこで, “朝型と夜型では体内時計支配下にある自律神経活動や胃運動・食欲感覚の日中の変動が異なる”という仮説を立て, 実験による検証を行った。前夜22時より絶食した若年女性34名の胃電図, 心電図 (心臓自律神経活動) , 食欲感覚, 眠気, 深部体温 (耳内温) を8-20時まで1時間毎に測定した。食事と間食は定時に供した。全測定後に朝型-夜型を質問紙によりスコア化し, 中央値以上を朝型傾向群, 未満を夜型傾向群として結果を比較した。夜型傾向群は朝型傾向群と比べて, 終日, 交感神経活動優位の自律神経活動と高い心拍数, 眠気スコアが示された。また, 午前中の空腹感スコアが低く, 食後胃運動の周波数シフトに有意な上昇を認めなかった。本結果より, 午前中の食欲や活動が減弱しやすい夜型傾向群の特徴が示唆された。

The relationship between the flavor and the heating time of niboshi-soup (extract of dried small sardine) was examined by sensory evaluation. During the heating of niboshi-soup, it was observed from panel scores that the flavor turned to be more preferable.Volatile, neutral and basic components in the head space vapor of niboshi-soup were investigated by gas chromatography and thin layer chromatography. The volatile neutral components of unheated and heated niboshi-soup were identified as follows; paraffins (C4-C8), n-aldehydes (C2-C6), iso-butyraldehyde, n-alcohols (C1, C3, C4) and iso-alcohols (C3, C4). The volatile basic components were ammonia, dimethylamine and trimethylamine. The amounts of most of these volatile components decreased during the heating.It appears that the decrease of the low-boiling volatile components contributes to the increased flavor acceptability of the heated niboshi-soup.

Although Japanese morning glory (Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth.) has been used intensively for genetic studies, DNA markers have not been developed in Ipomoea nil sufficient to cover all chromosomes. Therefore, we conducted microsatellite (simple sequence repeats, SSR) marker development in I. nil for future genetic studies. From 92,662 expressed sequence tag (EST) sequences, 514 unique microsatellite-containing ESTs were identified. Primer pairs were designed automatically in 326 SSRs. Of 150 SSRs examined, 75 showed polymorphisms among strains. A phenogram based on the SSR genotypes revealed the genetic relation among seven Japanese morning glories from five different regions of the world and an ivyleaf morning glory (I. hederacea Jacq.). The developed SSR markers might be applicable for genetic studies of morning glories and their relatives.

運動イメージの実施対象と同側で運動練習を行わせると, 運動イメージが運動の正確度を維持させると分かった。本研究では同側での運動練習が困難な場合を想定し, 運動イメージの実施対象と対側で運動練習を行わせていた場合でも同等の効果が得られるかについて検証することを目的とした。健常者20名に対し安静のF波測定後 (安静1回目), ピンチ力を目標値に調節する練習を右手で行わせた。次に, 運動練習したことをあたかも左手で行っているかのようにイメージさせF波を測定した (運動イメージ試行) 。運動イメージ後, 目標値へピンチ力を調節するよう指示し運動の正確度を評価した (ピンチ課題) 。別日には, 運動イメージ試行を再度の安静 (安静2回目) に入れ替えたコントロール課題も設定した。運動の正確度の指標は, 目標値からの発揮ピンチ力誤差を絶対値に変換した値 (絶対誤差) を採用した。結果, イメージ課題とコントロール課題間で絶対誤差に差はなかったが, 安静と比較した運動イメージ試行でF波出現頻度が増大した。

The Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) “Energy Carriers”, which aims development of hydrogen value chain, was conducted for five years from 2014. Research and development of ammonia combustion played an important role in the project, and significant outcomes related to utilization of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel were produced for gas turbines, internal combustion engines, industrial furnaces, co-firing of pulverized coal combustion, as well as feasibility study of ammonia combustion in large scale power plants. The project introduced renewed interest of ammonia combustion into international combustion community in terms of reducing greenhouse-gas emission from combustion in energy and industrial sectors. Ammonia combustion also has an impact not only on Japanese domestic policy for energy and environment but also on international energy agencies, which influence governments and industries of various nations.

Recent advances in the research and development of ammonia combustion are introduced. They are mainly promoted by the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), “Energy Carrier”. Ammonia is a potential chemical substance not only for a hydrogen energy carrier but also a carbon free fuel. Ammonia also has advantages in terms of storage and transportation because the thermal properties are almost the same as those of propane. The subjects of ammonia combustion research are on low combustion intensity, low radiation intensity, as well as high NOx emission. In this article, recently obtained fundamental ammonia flame characteristics, such as the features of NO formation, laminar burning velocity, Markstein length and reaction enhancement by hydrogen addition are summarized. Flame structures and burnt gas characteristics were experimentally and numerically evaluated. NO mole fraction decreased with an increase in equivalence ratio and it is caused by NHi (i = 2, 1, 0) generated from excess NH3 in the mixture. Laminar burning velocities and Markstein lengths were evaluated from spherically propagating flames up to 0.5 MPa. The maximum value of laminar burning velocity of ammonia/air is less than 7 cm/s and is about 1/5 of that of methane/air flame. 1D flame simulation with detailed reaction mechanisms were also performed and it was showed that the quantitatively predicted laminar burning velocities were inaccurate. The laminar burning velocity exponentially increases with the increase in the hydrogen ratio. On the other hand, the Markstein length varies non-monotonically with with an increase in the hydrogen ratio.

It seems that the synthesis of natural gas into synthetic petroleum is not taken into consideration yet though the conversion of natural gas into liquefied natural gas or methanol has been done as the means of its transportation. The author has examined the synthetic petroleum from natural gas.The present status of South African Coal, Oil and Gas Corporation (SASOL), only one operator of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in the world, is reported here after the explanation of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.Then it is proposed that the synthetic petroleum will be supplied to the consuming country after the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with the reforming of natural gas into CO and H2, and it is indicated that the synthetic petroleum with the technique of SASOL can be competitive with LNG, methanol and crude oil in economic view point.
