To determine the effect of fingernail length on handwork efficiency, 4 subjects performed 4 types of handwork tests with fingernails of 4 different lengths(0, 2, 4 and 6mm). In a plain stitch test, 4- and 6-mm fingernails reduced work efficiency. In a thread knotting test, 2-, 4-, and 6-mm fingernails markedly reduced work efficiency. In a writing test, 4-mm and 6-mm fingernails caused fatigue of the hands and arms. In a match board test, 6-mm fingernails markedly reduced work efficiency. Analysis of variance and multiple comparison showed results consistent with these findings. Young subjects tended to perform well with long fingernails. Fingernails of 2 mm were considered to be fashionable and feminine. Therefore, the desirable fingernail length may be 2 mm or less when students attend lecture classes and 0 mm when they attend sewing lessons.

Recent progress in the research in low-temperature liquid water and amorphous ices is reviewed. Polyamorphism in water is described as the key to understanding the puzzling properties of cold water. Polyamorphism is applied to other liquids under pressure and plays an important role in the study of liquids in general.

隠れ難聴 (hidden hearing loss) は, 聴覚閾値の上昇を伴わない騒音下での聞き取り障害や無難聴性耳鳴を特徴とする. 主な病態は蝸牛内有毛細胞と蝸牛神経のシナプス障害 (cochlear synaptopathy) であるが, 蝸牛神経の脱髄や軽度の蝸牛有毛細胞障害を含む複数の病態が関与する. 本総説では第一に, 隠れ難聴の疾患概念を支持する, ラセン神経節の一次性障害や蝸牛神経部分切断の聴覚閾値に及ぼす影響を検証した基礎研究を紹介する. 第二に, 加齢, 音響暴露動物の蝸牛組織解析による cochlear synaptopathy と ABRⅠ 波振幅に代表される聴覚電気生理パラメーターの相関について述べる. 第三に蝸牛神経の電気生理学的サブタイプと分子細胞生物学的知見の関連について述べる. 第四にヒトにおける隠れ難聴の診断開発に向けた臨床研究を紹介する. 第五に cochlear synaptopathy および neuropathy の治療を目指した基礎研究について紹介する.

Alerts and warnings studies have repeatedly reported their ineffectiveness in promoting protective actions. Given this problematic situation, this paper aims to demonstrate the effects of disaster information, environmental, social, and psychological factors, redefinition of situation and disaster schema on protective actions. The subjects consisted of those who were residing in the landslide prone and recently impacted areas of Hita, Nakatsu, and Tsukumi cities in Oita Prefecture (N=1,934)."Structural equation modeling was conducted to predict risk aversive behavior. As a result, disaster schema showed the strongest total effect on protective responses. Furthermore, disaster schema activated heuristic thinking and thus directly provoked protective actions.

In order to extract reasonably rare-earth elements (REEs) as deep-sea resources, the effect of ozone (O3) on REEs on hydroxyapatite (Abbreviated as Ca3(PO4)2) selected as a simulated REEs mud was comprehensively examined in aqueous solutions including alkali metal salts (MCl or CH3COOM, M = Li, Na, and K) and alkaline earth metal salts (MCl2 or (CH3COO)2M, M = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) ranging in temperature from 278 to 333 K. As a result, it was found that Ca3(PO4)2 exists as a solid state and REEs except Ce maintain their dissolved morphologies during O3 treatment. Moreover, it was confirmed that the leaching ratios of REEs from Ca3(PO4)2 increase with an increase in the concentrations of alkali metal salts and alkaline earth metal salts in aqueous solutions. This phenomenon implies that their adsorption-desorption mechanisms are chemically controlled through cation exchange reactions between REEs on Ca3(PO4)2 and other metal cations. In addition, the most effective cation to extract REEs from Ca3(PO4)2 into an aqueous solution was found to be Ca ion among these additives. It was considered that the constant increase of the ΔH and ΔS values from La to Lu in the adsorption equilibrium reactions results from the increase in the hydration number of REEs due to the lanthanide contraction. On the basis of these results, the leaching experiments of REEs on Ca3(PO4)2 were carried out to check whether the leaching promoting effect was accomplished by the combined use of O3 and Ca ion or not. Only when used in conjunction with O3 and Ca ion, it was found that the synergetic effect results in an almost fourfold increase in their leaching ratios. This promising result shows that it is possible to develop an innovative, modern, and eco-friendly extraction technology to separate REEs from Ca3(PO4)2.

本研究は,小学校においてSW-PBS 導入の第1 層支援の実践を行い,教員自身の応用行動分析に関する知識の変化,および,観察された児童の教室適応行動および児童が自己評定した学校適応感の変化を検討することを目的として行った。SW-PBS のための研修及び実践を通して,教員の応用行動分析についての知識が高まったことが示された。相対的に応用行動分析についての知識の得点が高い教員のクラスにおいて,児童たちの被侵害的関係や対人的適応といった学校適応感を改善し,また,学級不適応行動が改善された。

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3) are associated with cardiovascular risk factors. However, it is not clear whether the NOS3 SNP is a genetic risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.Methods and Results: This prospective cohort study included 2,726 subjects aged ≥40 years who participated in a community-based health checkup. We genotyped 639 SNPs, including 2 NOS3 SNPs (rs1799983 and rs1808593). All subjects were monitored prospectively over a median follow-up period of 16.0 years, with the endpoint being cardiovascular events, including cardiovascular death and/or non-fatal myocardial infarction. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that both rs1799983 GT/TT and rs1808593 GG carriers had a higher risk of the endpoint than non-carriers. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses revealed that both rs1799983 GT/TT and rs1808593 GG were independently associated with cardiovascular events after adjusting for confounding risk factors. The net reclassification index and integrated discrimination index were significantly improved by the addition of NOS3 SNPs as cardiovascular risk factors.Conclusions:NOS3 gene polymorphisms could be genetic risk factors for cardiovascular events in the general Japanese population, and could be used to facilitate the early identification of individuals at high risk of cardiovascular events.

Physical properties and chemical reactivities of an unknown chemical compound can be predicted by the thermodynamic quantities of that compound. There are so many isomers and congeners among dioxin analogues that it is impossible to measure the thermodynamic properties of all such compounds. In this case, we can compute these quantities based on quantum chemistry. This report summarizes the thermodynamic properties of dioxins based on computational chemistry and toxicity based on the QSAR method. Equations predicting PXDD and PXDF free energy were also derived using a quantum and deductive chemical approach.
