小川治兵衞 (『植治』) は、明治中期から昭和初期にかけて、無隣庵 (山縣有朋別邸) をはじめとする数多くの別荘庭園を作庭した。そうした別荘庭園の代表的なものの一つである封龍山荘庭園について、『京華林泉帖』(明治42年)『日本美術と工芸』(明治45年) の記事などから作庭当初の構想、世評を考察した。その結果、借景、庭園の構成についての小川治兵衞の考え方及び本庭園の世評の高さが明らかになった。

アメリカ合衆国で提訴されたKatskee v. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Nebraskaでは、乳癌-卵巣癌症候群と診断された原告の予防的臓器切除手術を保険がカバーするか否かをめぐり、疾病と病気の概念が争点とされた。ネブラスカ最高裁判所は、原告の状態は病気に該当し、未だ発病していない状態に対する予防的臓器切除手術を治療と認定した。本稿では、遺伝学的知見の増大は、反規範主義、規範主義のいずれの見解をとるにせよ、従来の疾病概念を拡張する可能性、もしくは疾病概念に否定的価値を付与する可能性があることを述べる。さらに、遺伝的状態に対する医学的介入について発症前、易罹患性および遺伝子多型に分類する試論を提示し、疾病や病気とみなされる限りにおいては治療の一形態として位置づけられることを結論する。

本研究は主に次の3点を明らかにした。第一に、1997年にユネスコが採択した「現在の世代の未来世代に対する責任に関する宣言」とハンス・ヨナスの『責任という原理』の未来倫理を中心にして、その主張の論理を検討し、両者は異なった正当化原理を用いており、両者の間には責任の階層性と言うべきものがあることを示した。第二に、それを明確にするために「責任」概念の歴史的展開を検討し、責任概念の構造図式を提案し、この図式に基づいて、上記の階層性を考察し、それが責任規範(価値理論)の違いに由来することを示した。第三に、論法」の観点から分析しさまざまな「世代間正義論」の難点を認識した。

Endothelial cells lining blood vessels are in tight contact with each other, thereby maintaining vascular integrity. Compromising vascular integrity leads to an increase in vascular permeability, which is associated with chronic inflammation, edema, and tumor angiogenesis. Vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin is an endothelium-specific cell-cell adhesion molecule involved in endothelial barrier functions. We previously reported that cyclic AMP-elevating agonists such as prostaglandins and adrenomedullin potentiate VE-cadherin-dependent cell adhesion by inducing activation of Rap1 small GTPase through Epac. We further investigated the mechanism whereby Rap1 potentiates VE-cadherin-dependent cell adhesion, and found that Rap1 induces the formation of circumferential actin bundles along the cell-cell junctions. Although it has been believed that α-/β-catenins anchor cadherin to the actin cytoskeleton to stabilize cadherin at cell-cell junctions (classical model), Nelson's and Weis' groups have recently suggested a new dynamic model in which α-/β-catenins do not stably connect actin to cadherin. However, our study clearly indicated that the circumferential actin bundles anchor VE-cadherin to the cell-cell junctions through α-/β-catenins. Thus Rap1 potentiates endothelial cell-cell junctions through the mechanism based on the static model.

The rise of the new radical right in Western European political parties started in the late 1980s and is now expanding across Europe. While causes of the rise of the new radical right vary in each county, a common characteristic of many radical right parties is their exclusive stance toward the immigration issue. Has the expanding support for these radical right parties across Europe resulted from anincreasing sense of xenophobia among European citizens against immigrants? Or has it resulted from the radical right parties’ usual tactic of gaining public support by expressing negative opinions on the immigration issue in order to acquire political legitimacy? This paper aims to clarify the rise of the radical right in the Netherlands in and after 2000. Focusing on two parties, Lijst Pim Fortuyn and Partij voor de Vrijheid, the study identifies characteristics of the radical right in Netherlands. Especially, it reviews and examines changes in Dutch society, including globalization and the expansion of the EU since the 1990s, in order to trace structural changes in the Dutch political system and examine the ways in which such changes are linked to the rise of the radical right. The paper also examines causes of the expansion of public support for the new radical right: whyit has been able to gain public support by proclaiming itself to be anti-immigration and anti-Muslim, despite the fact that most radical right candidates have historically been avoided by most citizens and treated as fringe candidates since the Second World War. In addition, the paper clarifies how the immigration issue in Dutch society has affected the radical right and how the radical right has gainedthe support of voters, including the arguments used by the radical right to acquire political legitimacy for its anti-immigration and anti-Muslim stance.

Complete reduplication of the urinary bladder is a rare con d ition. The patient here reported is 26-month-old girl, who visite d our hospital with chief complaint of anomalous external genitalia. Two external genita l i a were present at distance of about 10 cm, and further examinations revealed multiple malformations. These anomalie s consist in the urinary tract, female genital organs, gastrointestinal tract and skeletal system. In the low er urinary tract, complete reduplication of the urinary bladder was found. It was characteristic that each bladder had its own urethra and received one ureter. In the upper urinary tract left pelvic kidney was also demonstrated, w h ile right kidney was normal in position. Vesicouretera l refluxes were apparent bilaterally. Bilateral imperforated anuses with righ t perineal fistula were seen and roentgenologic examination gave a finding of duplicated rectum, but colonic duplications were not clearly demonstrated. Two appendices had been removed in the course of surgical repair for umbilical hernia at her age of 3 months in another hospital. Diastasis of the pubic bone, separated sacrum and a half vertebra with a rib were observed as the skeletal anomalies. Perineal ano p lasty was performed for a difficulty in defecation. Because of an immaturity and dysfunction of the urinary bladder, which are shown in the cystometrogram and electromyogram of the external vesical sphincter, cosmetic and urological reconstruction is now withheld. Thirty-one cases, i n cluding our own, of the complete reduplication of the urinary bladder were reviewed in the literature and discussed.
