Monazite in a granite pegmatite from Yamanoo, Sakuragawa, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan has been examined in terms of U, Th, Pb, and rare earth element (REE) chemistry by electron microprobe analysis. This pegmatite occurs as a lenticular vein in the Kabasan granitic body. Oscillatory and sector zoning were observed by back-scattered electron images. An averaged empirical formula was (Ce0.286Nd0.180Sm0.104La0.077Y0.069Pr0.041Gd0.069Dy0.020Er0.004Th0.069U0.011Ca0.052)Σ0.982 (P0.983Si0.027)Σ1.010O4. Compositional variations suggest that the (Th + U) contents are controlled mainly by the coupled substitution (Th, U) + Ca = 2REE. Calculated U-Th-Pb chemical ages based on the assumption that the initial Pb is negligible are 61 ± 11–69 ± 10 Ma (2σ) and consistent with previously reported radiometric ages for the Kabasan granitic body.

A new synonymy of coelotine spider is proposed through a comparison of the morphological characteristics and the results of our molecular analysis. Coelotes hachijoensis Ono 2008, described on the basis of specimens from Hachijo Island, is a junior synonym of Coelotes oshimaensis Shimojana 2000. The original distribution of C. oshimaensis is considered to be on Amami-oshima Island and the Tokara Islands in southwestern Japan, far from Hachijo Island. Various circumstantial evidences suggested that C. oshimaensis on Hachijo Island may have been artificially introduced from Amami-oshima Island.

Since childhood, I have been unable to share my experiences with those around me and lived in chaos. With a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, I recognized myself as a member of a minority group and gained connections to minority communities. On the other hand, I also experienced the unfairness of being overly blamed for miscommunication. Therefore, based on the social model of disability, I conducted tojisha-kenkyu in order to explore my characteristics and the conditions of the environment that suited those characteristics. As a result, I was able to gain knowledge about my characteristics behind communication difficulties and how to guarantee informational accommodation appropriate for these characteristics. Although this knowledge improved my current wellbeing, the traumatic memory of the past remained afterwards, and I was unable to integrate my present and past selves. However, the knowledge from others who knew the past gave meaning to such memories and enabled me to construct an integrated self-narrative. The above process of tojisha-kenkyu brought about knowledge that made it possible to connect with the body, the world, and the past, but this knowledge was at the individual level. It was only by acquiring historical knowledge that enabled me to situate my own tojisha-kenkyu in the genealogy of the knowledge of tojishas, which I received from my past peers, updated and transferred to my subsequent peers, that I was able to challenge the exclusive society.

Recent extension of the container transport system has lead to the remarkable increase in both speed and size of container ships. Since there is a practical limitation to the maximum output of an individual engine, multiple-screw propulsion will become necessary for a large container ship to attain a higher speed with a large capacity of transport than the speed of 25 knots. Comprehensive research works have been conducted with the aim at developing a high speed container ship with triple-screw to be built at Mitsui Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd. in 1972, for the service between Europe and Japan.This report deals with comparative tests among single-, twin- and triple-screw propulsions, and with mutual interference between the hull and propellers, cavitation researches and full-scale measurements on the triple screw ship. Such other items of research works as vibratory forces of the propellers will be reported in a later paper.Principal conclusions obtained are as follows, 1) A triple-screw ship has a better propulsive performance than a twin-screw ship.2) For the triple-screw ship adopted, inward rotation of the wing propellers gives better propulsive efficiency than outward rotation, which is explained both by the wake measurements by 5 hole pitot tubes and by the results of the self-propulsion tests.3) Mutual interference between the center and wing propellers can be neglected practically.4) The effect of variation of the load of a propeller on the self-propulsion factors of each propeller will be negligible, unless the variation is too large.5) Added resistance of the appendages is also subject to the scale effect.6) Decreasing the camber of the propeller section near the leading edge was shown to be an effective means to decrease the amount of back cavitation, both on the ship and on the model.

Two patients, 48- and 50-year-old sisters, presented with a characteristic facial appearance with slowly progressive deafness and cerebellar ataxia starting in their 30s. Genetic testing identified compound heterozygous pathogenic variants in the ERCC6 gene: c.1583G>A (p.G528E) and c.1873T>G (p.Y625D). A diagnosis of Cockayne syndrome (CS) B type III was made. CS is usually diagnosed in childhood with well-defined facial characteristics and photosensitivity. This case report describes rare cases of adulthood CS with a primary presentation of slowly progressing deafness and cerebellar ataxia. CS should be considered in adults with characteristic facial and skin findings, deafness, and cerebellar ataxia.

ナラ枯れは、江戸時代以前から日本で発生しており、過去の被害は周辺に拡がらなかったが、1980年代以降、全国的に拡大するようになった。京都府では、1990年代に被害が発生し、2011年以降は終息に向かったが、被害が再発している地域も多い。 ナラ枯れの発生原因についても、主因、誘因、素因に別けて考えるべきであろう。主因は、カシノナガキクイムシが媒介する糸状菌(Raffaelea quercivora)であることが証明された。誘因については、2005年の総説で、ブナ科樹木の大径化を指摘した。すなわち、燃料革命で化石燃料の利用が増え、薪炭林(里山よりも奥山に多い)が放置され、カシノナガキクイムシが繁殖しやすい大径木が増えたことを指摘した。この説が定説になってしまったが、総説では温暖化の影響も指摘した。しかし「温暖化を原因とする説が提唱されたこともあったが、60年以上前に冷涼な地域で発生しており、関連性を示すデータは得られていない」と反論され、科学的な検証を試みる人はなかった。そこで、演者は、温暖化がナラ枯れに与える影響について検証してきた。ここでは、温暖化がナラ枯れの要因であることを示す。

Ghost crabs (genus Ocypode spp.) found on sandy beaches are susceptible with the loss of an ecotone, making them useful as indicators of anthropogenic alteration, such as seawall construction. On the sandy beaches of Sendai Bay on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region of northern Japan, three Ocypode species have been sympatrically observed in recent years: O. stimpsoni, O. ceratophthalmus, and O. sinensis. However, these three Ocypode species only occur sympatrically from late summer to autumn, immediately after new recruitment. Since they are all juveniles at that period, it is difficult to identify them by morphological characteristics. Thus, we have developed a method for identifying these three Ocypode species. By using two restriction enzymes of AciI and BfaI, we can perform polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis on the 12S-rRNA region of the mitochondrial DNA. As a result, our PCR-RFLP analysis is able to identify all three Ocypode species. Therefore, this method will be a helpful tool for understanding population dynamics and evaluating the sandy beach ecosystem in cases where the three Ocypode species occur sympatrically but identification by morphological features is difficult.

"Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura" designed by Junzo SAKAKURA is one of the most representative modern buildings in Japan. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the proportion by means of the analysis on the golden ratio and the geometry based on the design process. The methods of analysis are as follows: extraction of module, golden ratio and element of geometric figure. The paper shows that design of "Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura" was composed by various geometries through the analysis on Plane figure.
