This paper proposes a method for the unsupervised learning of lexicons from pairs of a spoken utterance and an object as its meaning under the condition that any priori linguistic knowledge other than acoustic models of Japanese phonemes is not used. The main problems are the word segmentation of spoken utterances and the learning of the phoneme sequences of the words. To obtain a lexicon, a statistical model, which represents the joint probability of an utterance and an object, is learned based on the minimum description length (MDL) principle. The model consists of three parts: a word list in which each word is represented by a phoneme sequence, a word-bigram model, and a word-meaning model. Through alternate learning processes of these parts, acoustically, grammatically, and semantically appropriate units of phoneme sequences that cover all utterances are acquired as words. Experimental results show that our model can acquire phoneme sequences of object words with about 83.6% accuracy.

Effects of direction of the attention under the combined environment of color and temperature were discussed experimentally. Thermal conditions, color conditions and direction of the attention to environment were controlled. Subjects were 44 male and 105 female students. They participated in either winter or summer experiments. The results are summarized as follows: (1)Evaluations of the subjects were different between those who paid attention to color and those who did to temperature, (2)the effect of colors on the evaluation of subjects who paid attention to color was larger than that of the other subjects.

We have determined the concentrations of inorganic components in jellyfish, such as Aurelia aurita (with and without aeration), Stomolophus nomurai, and dried sludge of Aurelia aurita using absorptiometry, flame photometry, ICP emission spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry, or ion chromatography to examine the potential usefulness of jellyfish as a fertilizer for vegetable fields. The concentrations of the total nitrogen (9800 mg/kg), total phosphorus (19000 mg/kg), magnesium (17000 mg/kg), and calcium (27000 mg/kg) in the dried sludge of Aurelia aurita were 23, 1360, 14, and 96-times higher than those in Aurelia aurita (without aeration, 420, 14, 1200, and 280 mg/kg in fresh weight), respectively. Although the dried sludge of Aurelia aurita seemed to have some potential as a fertilizer, it contained high concentrations of iron (190000 mg/kg) and aluminum (2200 mg/kg), which might be undesirable for the growth of plants. On the other hand, the concentration of total nitrogen (750 mg/kg) in Stomolophus nomurai was 1.8-times higher than that in Aurelia aurita (without aeration), although the concentrations of total phosphorus (2.3 mg/kg) and calcium (75 mg/kg) were 1/6 and 1/4 of those in Aurelia aurita (without aeration). Stomolophus nomurai could also be expected to have potential as a fertilizer. Spinach was cultivated using a suspension of Aurelia aurita and Stomolophus nomurai, and the dried sludge of Aurelia aurita as a fertilizer. Stomolophus nomurai was most effective for the growth of spinach. The high concentrations of iron and aluminum in the dried sludge of Aurelia aurita seemed to decelerate the growth of spinach.

We propose a method to extract a lot of correspondences between questions and answers from a Web message board automatically. We use Web message boards as information sources because Web messasge boards have a lot of articles posted by general users. We extract correspondences between questions and answers that can be used in question answering systems to support natural language sentence input. At first, our proposed method classifies messages of a Web message board into either questions or others. Next, our method extracts a set of root-node pairs from the thread tree of a Web message board, where we define the thread tree when the root is an article classified as a question, and nodes are articles classified as answer candidates. Our method finds correspondences between questions and answers using two clues, (1)similarity between their articles, (2)link count between their articles. We experimented the proposed method, discussed results, and analyzed errors.

Trials on transmission of olfactory information together with audio/visual information are currently being conducted in the field of multimedia. However, continuous emission of scents in high concentration creates problems of human adaptation and remnant odors in air.To overcome such problems we developed an olfactory display in conjunction with Canon Inc. This display has high emission control in the ink-jet so that it can provide stable pulse emission of scents. Humans catch a scent when they breathe in and inhale smell molecules in air. Therefore, it is important that the timing of scent presentation is synchronized with human breathing. We also developed a breath sensor which detects human inspiration.In this study, we combined the olfactory display with the breath sensor to make a pulse ejection presentation system synchronized the breath. The experimental evaluation showed that the system had more than 90 percent of detection rate. Another evaluation was held at KEIO TECHNO-MALL 2007. From questionnaire results of the participants, we found that the system made the user feel continuous sense of smell avoiding adaptation. It is expected that our system enables olfactory information to be synchronized with audio/visual information in arbitrary duration at any time.

人間中心設計を応用したWeb開発プロセスでは、フィールドワークやインタビューでユーザーの潜在的欲求を探り、その情報を可視化するペルソナやシナリオといった手法が活用されるようになってきた。また可視化されたユーザーが利用する人工物をモデル化する過程としてペーパープロトタイプなどが注目されている。 本研究は、Webサービスの設計において可視化されたユーザーがどのようなコンテクストで人工物を扱いゴールにたどり着くかを、スケッチからプロトタイピングという流れに着目しその手法について提案と検証を試みた。

The chaperonin GroEL is an essential molecular chaperone that assists protein folding in the cell. ATP-dependent conformational change of GroEL leads to the stable binding of cochaperonin GroES, forming a cage-shaped complex that accommodates a substrate protein to complete the folding. After the elucidation of the outline of the molecular mechanism over the last decade, now we are ready to answer the important questions; how GroEL encapsulate the substrate protein? How the substrate protein influences the functional cycle of GroEL? What is the role of ATP hydrolysis in the GroEL-assisted folding? Is the folding in the GroEL-ES cavity is same as that in the bulk solution? Here I review the recent progress on the GroEL study and discuss the essential role of chaperonin GroEL.

Japan's Environmental Impact Assessment Law was enacted in 1997. However, there are still many problems in Japan's ecological impact assessments. Among these problems, we turned our attention to problems stemming from 1. The system of Japan's EIA ; 2. The team of EIAs ; and 3. Technical methodologies. We applied the Habitat Evaluation Procedure for the first time to an EIA in Japan. Through this experience, we reviewed effectiveness of HEP as a solution to the above problems in Japan's EIAs. The proposed project was a residential development in Yokohama. The site was located in one of the largest remaining natural suburban areas in the city,consisting of densely vegetated hills and creeks which provide quality habitats to wildlife including fireflies and brown frogs, selected as evaluation species in this HEP. Some modifications of original HEP were introduced, including technical revision for the fragmented natural area which has a peculiar land use in Japan. As a result, HEP contributed to formation of substantial mitigation measures for habitats conservation through analyses and discussions among HEP team members.

We have developed a non-water gel comprised of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) as a gelling agent. We investigated the gelation mechanism of the HPC/PEG system on the basis of a stress-controlled rheometer and an X-ray diffractometer. From these results, we found that two gelation mechanisms coexisted in the HPC/PEG system; the entanglement of interacting HPC polymer chains which behave like a flexible polymer and the cross-linking of the microcrystalline domains of the HPC main chains. In the lower HPC concentration range, the gelation is dominated by the cross-linking of the microcrystalline domains of the HPC main chains. In the higher HPC concentration range, on the other hand, the gelation is dominated by the entanglement of interacting HPC polymer chains.

Recently, high-beta operations of Spherical Tokamak (ST) have received increased attention due to the compatibility achieved between high-beta and a long confinement time. In addition to the high normalized current I/aB achievable at a low aspect ratio, an important advantage of high-beta ST is its direct access to second stability for ideal ballooning modes. The mega-ampere class experiments, NSTX and MAST, renewed the record beta values up to βT˜35%, increasing confinement time up to τE˜0.1 sec. Small-scale experiments produced the second-stable STs with diamagnetic toroidal field /absolute minimum-B by transforming oblate FRCs. Major issues for the second stable STs are achieving a stable startup/ profile control for kink and the ballooning stabilities and a concrete approach to high-ratio pressure driven currents .

房総半島北部の下総地方で, 近世から昭和戦前期までみられた湿田農法について検討した. 江戸期の下総地方の湿田では, 唐籾とよばれたインド型赤米が広範に摘田(つみた)という湛水直播法により栽培された. 栽培された水田は, たいとう土とよばれた黒泥・泥炭土壌の強湿田であった. この強湿田で日本型水稲を移植栽培すると, 夏・秋落ちして生育が著しく抑制された. 湛水直播栽培は, わずかに広がる土壌表層の酸化的条件を利用した栽培法であり, これに唐籾の草型特性が結びついた. これより湿田の程度がやや軽い下総地方の夏・秋落ち田では, 昭和戦前期まで小苗・密植栽培が行われた. 小苗・密植栽培は排水不良・生育制御が困難な湿田で穂数を確保するための栽培法であった. 土地改良の遅れた下総地方では戦前まで湿田農法が残った.

A novel method to quantify glycidol fatty acid esters (GEs), supposed to present as food processing contaminants in edible oils, has been developed in combination with double solid-phase extractions (SPEs) and LC-MS measurements. The analytes were five species of synthetic GEs: glycidol palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid esters. The use of selected ion monitoring in a positive ion mode of atmospheric chemical ionization-MS with a reversed-phase gradient LC provided a limit of quantification of 0.0045-0.012 μg/mL for the standard GEs, which enables the detection of GEs in μg ranges per gram of edible oil. Using the double SPE procedure first in reversed-phase and then in normal-phase second, allowed large amounts of co-existing acylglycerols in the oils to be removed, which improved the robustness and stability of the method in sequential runs of LC-MS measurements. When the method was used to quantify GEs in three commercial sources of edible oils, the recovery% ranged from 71.3 to 94.6% (average 79.4%) with a relative standard deviation of 2.9-12.1% for the two oils containing triacylglycerols as major components, and ranged from 90.8 to 105.1% (average 97.2%) with a relative standard deviation of 2.1-12.0% for the other, diacylglycerol-rich oil. Although the accuracy and precision of the method may not be yet sufficient, it is useful for determining trace levels of GEs and will be helpful for the quality control of edible oils.
