One of the dominant trends in recent STS studies is the discussions which try to capture the problems of science and technology in the context of civil society. They emphasize active oppositions towards the expert systems and autonomous decisions by the public people as a means to solve scientific issues. In these arguments, to express one's mistrust in experts is often considered as an important action, which is deferent from as has been the case in thepast. However, to mistrust in experts is never autonomous decision, but is equivalent to trust in experts when you see it as an individual action. When one needs to trust, he/she is stranger in the scientific confines : for example, whenone take an airplane, or when one has some food additives. Ordinary people rarely confirm the knowledge which is heard from the others or mass media. We often make decisions with trust in systems and being lack of any comprehensions. We invariably have to trust something unless we are like Robinson Crusoe. STS has often eliminated such as deficit model especially in the context of civil society. However, this paper reconsiders about the deficiency and tries to draw the attitude towardsscientific system in more realistic sense.

イワナ・ヤマメ養殖魚の小型魚と大型魚の釣獲放流後の死亡率と成長を実験池において調査した。餌釣り, 毛鈎釣りともに, 口腔にかかった鈎を除去した場合, いずれの魚種においても死亡率は低かった。餌釣りで口腔より奥にかかった鈎を除去した場合, イワナ小型魚とヤマメ大型魚では死亡率は高かった。口腔にかかった毛鈎を残留させた場合, イワナ大型魚では死亡率は高かった。死亡のほとんどが釣獲放流後14日以内に観察された。釣獲方法, 鈎がかりの部位, 鈎の処理方法は成長と肥満度に影響しなかった。

<p>This paper aims to show that the absence of sounds can be an object of auditory perception. First, I present various types of objections to the possibility of hearing the absence of sounds. Next, I explain that there is a kind of absence of sounds which seems to be heard, namely, the absence of sounds occurred in between sounds. I argue that perception of such an absence can be explained by the same mechanism for hearing sounds and detecting sound sources, that is, auditory scene analysis. I also argue that such an absence can be characterized, analogous to holes, as a dependent object which ontologically depends on previous and succeeding sounds. Based on these considerations, I reply the objections. Finally, I propose a modality-neutral model of absence perception based on the auditory case, and suggest that this model casts a doubt on the basic assumptions about perception.</p>

This article describes the findings of research for some recent transport airplane's accidents related to fatigue cracks. One is a B747SR's accident due to crack initiating at the fastener holes (to say Multiple-Site Damage). The other describes the crash of UAL's DC10-10 (N1819U), in Sioux City, Iowa, U. S. A., on July 19, 1989, which experienced a catastrophic failure of the No. 2 tail-mounted engine during cruise flight. The third explains the in flight separation of the No. 2 engine and engine pylon from B747-100F, shortly after departure from Anchorage International Airport, Anchorage, Alaska, on March 31, 1993. As a result of investigation for B747-100F's accident, National Transportation Safety Board made some important recommendations (One is to amend the design load requirements of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 25 to consider multiple axis loads encountered during severe turbulence) to the Federal Aviation Administration. Also, current aging airplane service data have identified that there are more cracked airplanes with increasing fleet edge, and possibly several fatigue cracks in some of the cracked airplanes. Especialy, MSD helped focus the attention of the aeronautical field on the problems of operating an aging transport airplanes. Therefore, FAA proposed to rivise the Advisory Circular No. 25·571-1A (Damage tolerance and fatigue evaluation of structure) on 3/5/1986. This article describes one operator's viewpoint on the means to maintain the safety of aircraft structures in consideration of the revised structural fatigue evaluation standards.

問題解決療法(PST)のうつ症状に対する改善効果は、これまで多くの研究によって明らかにされているが、その効果をメタ分析によって検討した研究は行われていない。そこで本研究では、10の研究を用いてPSTの軽度うつ症状に対する改善効果についてメタ分析の視点から検討した。本研究から得られた結果は以下のとおりである。(1)PSTの軽度うつ症状に対する改善効果は、統制群より大きい。(2)セッション数(7 or more sessions、6 or fewer sessions)にかかわらず、PSTの軽度うつ症状に対する改善効果は統制群より大きい。(3)治療形式(グループ形式、個別形式)にかかわらず、PSTの軽度うつ症状に対する改善効果は、統制群より大きい。(4)治療終結期において、PSTの軽度うつ症状に対する治療効果はSSRIより小さいが、フォローアップ期において、PSTの軽度うつ症状に対する治療効果はSSRIより大きい。これらのことから、PSTは軽度うつ症状に対する治療法として有効であり、薬物療法と併用して治療に用いる有用性が示唆された。

人工知能の新しいグランドチャレンジとしてコンピュータに星新一のようなショートショートを創作させるプロジェクトを開始した。知性を理性と感性とに分けるとこれまでの人工知能はもっぱら理性を対象としていたが、ある程度理性はコンピュータに扱えるようになってきた。芸術作品の創作ができればコンピュータにも感性が扱えると示せたことになると考える。ここでは本プロジェクトの概要について述べる。

この実験では半径20mの定常円を旋回中のレーシングドライバと一般ドライバの運転挙動の違いを30km/hで定速旋回した場合とタイヤに横滑りを生じる速度域で走行した場合 (高速旋回) について比較検討した. その結果30km/h定速旋回中の各ドライバの最大横加速度の平均値は一般ドライバのほうが大きくなる傾向があり, 高速旋回では前輪の横滑りが発生する速度の平均値はレーシングドライバのほうが高いことがわかった. これらはカーブを同じ速度で走行していても運転技能の高いドライバほど車の運動状態は安定していることを意味する. また30km/h定速旋回では旋回軌道の修正は操舵により行われる傾向がすべてのドライバにみられるが, 高速旋回ではレーシングドライバはスロットル操作で軌道修正を行っていた. その理由としてレーシングドライバは車のサスペンション特性を利用する能力があるために実験車の運動性能を最大限に利用する操作がスロットル操作による軌道修正であったためと我々は考えた.
