Pediococcus sp. ISK-1, isolated in our laboratory, has been found to inhabit in well-aged Nukadoko which is believed to have lasted for 360 years. We compared the influence of ethanol between Lactobacillus homohiochii JCM 1199' and strain ISK-l and found that the growth of strain ISK-1 was seriously inhibited by ethanol. However, fermentation of ISK-1 was strongly stimulated by Yamahai-moto Sake and Sakekasu (Sake Filter Cake). Yamahai-moto Sake is obtained from traditional brewing, therefore, it was possible that Sakekasu would have been used for the first Nukadoko preparation at that time. Addition of 8.0% NaCI and 2.0% Sakekasu in MRS broth resulted in substantially improving the cell population and lactate formation. Based on those facts, it is presumed that the first Nukadoko may have been prepared by the supplementation of Sakekasu, Soy souce, and Salt with selective pressure resulting in enrichment of strain ISK-1 of the bacteriocin producer.

In order to improve visibility of tactile indicators, sensory test was carried out using SD method for 15 vision-impaired people. The result shows that higher contrast between the indicators and adjacent flooring material is important even with yellow indicators are used. The result for visibility test was quite similar even if the color combination was inverse, however in the case of floor was constructed in checked pattern, higher contrast is required.

当科では中耳真珠腫の再発予防に主眼をおき乳突充填型鼓室形成術を行ってきた。open法に準じた開放された術野で真珠腫を徹底清掃し, 次いで鼓室形成術後に外耳道の再建と清掃乳突腔の充填を行う。その結果, 真珠腫の再発が大幅に予防できた。その後も改良を加えながら成績向上に努めてきたが, 最近では骨パテをフィブリン糊で固定後, 圧迫・脱水した骨パテ板で外耳道後壁を再建し, 骨片と骨パテ板で乳突腔を充填している。本術式の要点と2年以上経過観察できた中耳真珠腫の初回手術症例35耳の成績を提示した。さらに乳突充填型鼓室形成術の問題点と今後の対応について述べた。

In an attempt to develop a totally synthetic, self-regulated insulin delivery system to treat diabetes, N-substituted poly(acrylamide) copolymer gels bearing boronate functionality have been chemically optimized so as to undergo an abrupt and glucose-dependent change in hydration. This study highlights an importance of fine-tuning the mesh size of the gel relative to that of insulin in order to achieve the better controlled-release in a manner less sensitive to the temperature, even with an apparently marginal change of hydration.

In many Hydrangea cultivars, sepal color depends on soil conditions. The traditional concept is that different levels of absorption of aluminum ions from soil and its accumulation in sepal vacuoles changes Hydrangea sepal color. To investigate how sepal coloration can be stabilized, we examined the components that may contribute to color variability according to the traditional concept. Using 10 cultivars and lines with sepals of stable red or stable blue color plants or with sepals of variable color (red or purple) plants grown in acid soils and alkaline soils, we analyzed sepal pH and sepal contents of anthocyanin, aluminum ion, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, and 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid. Sepals of all cultivars became bluer when plants were grown in acid soil than when they were grown in alkaline soil, even if the change in stable color plants was milder than that of variable color plants. The same component changes probably happen in sepals of both stable and variable color plants in response to different soil conditions to cause the coloration change. When the two soil conditions were compared, a statistically significant difference was detected for delphinidin 3-glucoside, which is a major anthocyanin of Hydrangea, in the variable-color line ‘HH2’ and for 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid in the stable red line ‘HH19’, but not for any other compound examined, including aluminum ions. Although there is possibility that localization of aluminum ions in vacuoles of the colored cells changes, it is assumed that changes in contents of aluminum ion chelaters such as phosphoric acid affect the sepal color change in response to different soil conditions, as well as the coloration stability or variability. When cultivars were compared in terms of properties of sepal coloration, although contents of aluminum ions and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid tended to be higher in stable blue cultivars than in other cultivars, these differences were not statistically significant. In agreement with previous reports, our data indicate that a lower content of 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid is essential for blue Hydrangea sepals.

パチンコホール業界では、1980年に登場した「フィーバー機」が第3次パチンコブームを引き起こす一方で、遊技者に対してさまざまな弊害をもたらすことになったため、1981年から85年にかけて、警察による指導とパチンコ業界による自主規制が行われた。それによりホール業界では遊技機の射幸性に依存した経営方針を改善する必要に迫られた。こうして先進的ホール企業では、これを契機にしてサービス業としてふさわしいホール経営のあり方を模索するようになる。ずなわちホール企業による「経営改革」が進められ、1990年代に本格化し、今日に至る。とはいえ、経営改革のい重要性と必要性が強調されるようになって10年以上が経過した今日でも、その重要性を認識し実行するホール企業は一部に限られているのが現状である。本稿ではホール業界において、今日でもなお経営改革がホール企業全体では十分に実施されているわけではないという事実に着目し、なぜパチンコ業界の健全化に向けた取組みであるはずの各ホール企業による経営改革が全体的に浸透していないのか、つまり経営改革の抑制要因を探ることを目的としている。

During the time of the Barons' War and its aftermath, two eyres were held in Cambridgeshire, one in 1261 and the other in 1268. In the rolls of those eyres, kept in the Public Record Office in London, 179 names are found in the jurors' list of 1261, and 200 names in that of 1268, while 63 names appear in both. In 1268, other than the ordinary hundred jurors, some 13 persons were selected as "juratores hundredorum de Comitatu Cantebrigie." They were to present the "seisiatores, " those who seized the land of the Disinherited, namely the adherents of Simon de Montfort. Whenpresenting, did those jurors work with a local concern in mind? Or were they influenced by the king or the magnates? This paper investigates whether the influence from outside, that is from the king or the magnates, influenced jury verdicts by taking up the case of the hundred jury of Armingford, Cambridgeshire in the 1260s. If outside influence was not effective, then we must conclude that verdicts were determined autonomously by the jurors themselves. Generally speaking, hundred jurors commonly tended to avoid presenting theirneighbours.However, in some cases, they presented with a kind of factiously spirited intention. Using Farrer's Feudal Cambridgeshire and some other authorities, the author studies the relations between the jurors and their lords or patrons to see if resident landlords were rarely presented by jurys or not. It is interesting to note that Peter of Savoy, the queen's uncle, was presented by the jury several times, while the Earl of Gloucester, once a leading reformer against the king, was never presented of the charge of trespassing. Regarding Warin de Bassingbourn, who used royal favour to take other people's land for his oun use, thehundred jury, or select jury, showed feelings of hate. As to how the Earl of Gloucester benefited the local people, immediately after the battle of Evesham in 1265, he played a prominent role in seising the land of the Disinherited before the king's favourites could come to disseise their wealth. The Earl's influence on the local people was through patronage in keeping their tenures, while the king planned to grant the land to his favourites for their service to him. Within the Armingford Hundred there was not conflict but rivalry between the king and the Earl of Gloucester during the 1260s.

We describe the fundamental general features of the milieu of correctional institutions, the first reactions of criminals and delinquents in confinement situations, and their later adjustment to those situations. The first reactions include: relief that the trial is over, hurt and sorrow, wonderment about his or her own sanity, self-pity, anger or resentment toward individuals and society in general, determination to be revenged; despair, defeat; helplessness, suicidal thought, and determination to reform. The later adjustment includes the following types: (1) wholesome; (2) pseudowholesome, (3) maladjusted (including following subtypes-aggressive hostility, compensation, projectin, psychological escape, and actual physical escape), and (4) abnormal reaction (the so-called prison psychosis or prison reaction). But this first reaction and the later adjustment types may be very different in concentration camps or locked mental hospitals.
