A new species of swimming crab of the genus Catoptrus A. Milne-Edwards, 1870 (Portunidae) is described from Kagoshima, southern Japan. Catoptrus lavicolus n. sp. was collected from deep inside large lava rocks at shallow subtidal bed of Sakurajima, an active volcano. The new species differs from all seven congeners by a combination of the characters of the carapace, chelipeds and ambulatory legs. Intersex specimens of C. lavicolus n. sp. were observed in this study, while no male specimen has been collected.

Pandiculation within spiders has only recently been discovered - the first record of this habit among Protostomia – and it has only been demonstrated in one species (Cyclosa argenteoalba). We report here four further araneoid species i.e. Argiope bruennichi, Cyrtophora ikomosanensis, Trichonephila clavata (all Araneidae), and Nihonhimea japonica (Theridiidae) exhibiting pandiculation in or on their own webs. These records suggest that pandiculation is widely distributed at least among the superfamily Araneoidea, members of which generally construct aerial webs and wait in ambush for a long period.

バーチャルユーチューバー (VTuber) と呼ばれる,動画投稿者を模したバーチャルキャラクターの活動が盛んになっている. 2020 年 11 月現在 VTuber の数は 13000 人を超えており, その活動はタレントやクリエータなど多くの分野で注目を集めている. しかし, VTuber はそのキャラクターや投稿動画のトピックの組み合わせにより, 活動の実態を把握することが難しい. そこで本稿では VTuber の探索を支援するシステムを提案する. このシステムは, VTuber を検索する機能と, VTuber の情報を表示するページからなる. 検索機能では, VTuber をその名前と活動内容を表すキーワードのどちらかで検索できる. VTuber ページでは, キーワードや関連する VTuber の情報を用いて, VTuber を探索することができる. このシステムによって, VTuber を能動的に探索し, VTuber の理解を深めることが可能になった.

Ballistic impact tests were conducted on intermediate purity titanium plate and Ti-6pctAl-4pctV-ELI alloy plate and newly developed Ti-Fe-O-N alloy plate using ogive-shaped projectile with 7. 62mm diameter to study relation between the fracture mechanisms and adiabatic shear band formation The plugging process was dominated by adiabatic shear deformation in localized bands. Selected data and optical micrographs relating to the adiabatic shear band formation, the variation of depth of penetration and ballistic limit velocity were presented. The fracture mechanisms associated with the shear localization and fracture process changed from bulging failure to plugging failure by a shocked pressure increase. The results showed the differences of the fracture mechanisms between two high strength titanium alloys are responsible for significant differences in the elongation of their mechanical property and in the evolution of shear band patterns It also showed evidence of the long shear band connected from the shocked surface to the bulging region was found in all target plates, but evidence of the long cracks connected did not be found in all target plates at impact velocity just near below each ballistic limits

Background:This study investigated the effects of age on the outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and on cardiac biomarker profiles, especially in patients with cardiovascular diseases and/or risk factors (CVDRF).Methods and Results:A nationwide multicenter retrospective study included 1,518 patients with COVID-19. Of these patients, 693 with underlying CVDRF were analyzed; patients were divided into age groups (<55, 55–64, 65–79, and ≥80 years) and in-hospital mortality and age-specific clinical and cardiac biomarker profiles on admission evaluated. Overall, the mean age of patients was 68 years, 449 (64.8%) were male, and 693 (45.7%) had underlying CVDRF. Elderly (≥80 years) patients had a significantly higher risk of in-hospital mortality regardless of concomitant CVDRF than younger patients (P<0.001). Typical characteristics related to COVID-19, including symptoms and abnormal findings on baseline chest X-ray and computed tomography scans, were significantly less prevalent in the elderly group than in the younger groups. However, a significantly (P<0.001) higher proportion of elderly patients were positive for cardiac troponin (cTn), and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal pro BNP (NT-proBNP) levels on admission were significantly higher among elderly than younger patients (P<0.001 and P=0.001, respectively).Conclusions:Elderly patients with COVID-19 had a higher risk of mortality during the hospital course, regardless of their history of CVDRF, were more likely to be cTn positive, and had significantly higher BNP/NT-proBNP levels than younger patients.

We describe a series of preliminary experiments undertaken to investi-gate the relationship between complicated tool-making and the presence or absence of language in its communicative role. The experiments involved teaching two groups of university students how to make Levallois flakes by either verbal or non-verbal demonstration. The rates and mean times of acquisition of the Levallois technique and of successful flake production were compared. They did not differ significantly between the two groups. From these results, we infer that spoken language was not indispensable for Levallois flake production in the Middle Palaeolithic.

日本において情報交換の基盤になるのが,文字情報交換の仕組みである。文字情報基盤は,個人の氏名を正確かつ使いやすく実装する仕組みとして政府が整備してきており,フォントや画数などの文字情報等を,誰でも無料で利用できるように提供している。ツールへの実装,自治体への導入も進み始めており,多くの自治体では,従来もっていた外字の同定作業も実施している。国際標準への対応を進めるとともに,単に文字数を増やすのではなく,JISを活用した日常での簡易な活用方法を提案する等,今後の日本の社会の基盤となる仕組みといえる。本稿では,現在の取り組みとその将来展望について解説を行う。

我々は,「ロボットは東大に入れるか?」プロジェクトにおいて英語問題に取り組んでいる.本稿では,不要文除去問題に着目し,本問題に対して,近年あらゆるタスクで最高スコアを達成したBERTを適用する.BERTをどのように解法に適用するかを紹介し,ベースラインを超えて最高スコアに到達したことを示す.さらに,エラー分析により,BERTでできていないことを明らかにする.

In this paper, I discuss the significance of informed consent( IC) at the time of its origin in the United States. There are two settings wherein IC is applied ― human research and clinical medicine. In clinical medicine, two legal principles ― battery and negligence ― are relevant in lawsuits. I show that the core of IC comprises the principle of “negligence,” whose significance is clarified in this paper in detail. This principle means “an enlargement of the scope of doctors’ responsibility”, which urges us to redefine the relationship between doctors and patients. Finally, on these grounds, I consider the ethical implications of “self-determination of patients.” The essence of IC is that it changes the order of priority, from the previous relation, “the benefit of the patient > the will of the patient,” to the current relation “the will of the patient > the benefit of the patient”. In other words, the essence of IC is to respect the will of patients and provide medical benefits by assisting them.

In the early 2000s a research movement called SHAKAI GIJUTU (‘social technology’ in English) emerged, and the topic of ‘science communication’ subsequently captured the interest of Japan's STS community. After 2005, some universities made also college courses designed to educate communicators and interpreters for science and technology, focusing on the communication specialist. This paper will examine from the above standpoint the relations between the full-scale neoliberal reform in Japan that started in the mid 1990s and the development of ‘science communication’ that coincided with neoliberal reforms.     The theory and practice of ‘science communication’ have focused on ‘interactive communication’ (the contextual model) as an ideal situation for over ten years. However, the understanding of communication and also power are narrow and could be amplified in two ways. First, rather than understand communication and power as relations between actors, the focus could shift to ‘institutions’, the arena where inter-actor communication is made and inter-actor power is exercised. If science communication aims at the public interest, it should be made in the course of changing how broad power and also broad inter-actor communication work, that is, changing or criticizing the shape of ‘institutions’ as media for communication and power. Second, in most cases, the shape of ‘institutions’ that ‘science communication’ has pursued, i.e. ‘interactive communication’ and ‘interactive power relation’, overlaps with the ideology and the social system that the neoliberal social reform has pursued. The neoliberal reform accompanied by the complementary New Civil Society requires ‘interactive communication’ and ‘interactive power relation’ as the ideological institution and the social institution to make commercialization and public-private partnerships work well. Therefore, even if the pursuit of interactive communication looks like the deepening of democracy, the true picture is the market-oriented change of democracy, and consequently it would not realize the public interest achieved by political community. Science communication should be extended into the shape of power and communication that is able to realize the public interest of social rights and social fairness that the neoliberal thought and policy fail in.

抗真菌剤が歯周治療の新しい治療薬として一部で利用され, 朝日新聞, 歯科商業雑誌および一般週刊誌に掲載され臨床の場で一部の歯科医師に混乱を招き, 歯周治療がゆがめられ, 国民の口腔保健をも脅かす事態となっています。日本歯周病学会は国民の口腔保健に寄与すべく, 合理的で効率のよい歯周治療の定着とその質的向上を目指して, 1996年には歯周治療のガイドラインの策定にも関与しました。また一昨年 (1998年) より各地で地元歯科医師会の協力を得て臨床研修会を主催し, 歯周治療の充実, 普及にも努めてまいりました。このような経緯から, 本学会においても今回の事態を憂慮し, 理事会および常任理事会で数回に渡り検討し, 抗真菌剤の歯周治療薬としての利用に関して学会として共通の見解を提出すべきとの結論に至り, 本報告を作成いたしました。本報告が臨床の先生方の歯周治療の正しい理解の一助となり, 効果的な歯周治療が普及して, 歯周治療に対する正しい理解を改めて喚起し, 歯科医師が国民の口腔保健, ひいては全身の保健に寄与できれば幸甚です。
