Taiheiyo coal extraction experiments with supercritical water (SCW) and SCW-Phenol mixtures were conducted at 400℃ and 25MPa using a semi-continuous apparatus. With increasing the concentration of phenol, the extraction yield increased up to 80wt%-daf. Extraction yield of Yallourn coal extraction shows 80wt%-daf, while that of Adaro coal shows 65wt%-daf with the SCW-PhOH (80wt%) mixtures. Mechanism of the co-solvent reactive extraction was discussed based on the analysis of the products. This suggests the capping effect of phenol to prevent from polymerization of products.

Background: The thermic effect of food (TEF) is higher in lean than in obese human subjects.Objective: Relationships between TEF and insulin resistance during meals, from the point of view of autonomic nervous activity, were evaluated.Methods: Autonomic nervous activity was evaluated in 20 young adults using the spectral analysis of heart rate variability from one hour before to two hours after a meal. Heart rate data were analyzed based on low frequency components (LF power, 0.04-0.15 Hz), high frequency components (HF power, 0.15-0.40 Hz), and LF/HF ratios. Energy expenditure and the TEF were measured 30 min after a meal. Homeostasis model of insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was also measured.Results: The LF/HF ratio was significantly increased 30 min after a meal (p<0.05). No correlation between LF power and HF power with TEF was found, but the LF/HF ratio was significantly and positively correlated with TEF (r=+0.56, p<0.05). Moreover, a significant negative correlation was found between the HOMA-IR and TEF (r=-0.601, p<0.05).Conclusions: The findings suggest that a reduction in insulin sensitivity induces a poor response of sympathetic nervous activity in the postprandial phase and a reduction in postprandial energy expenditure. We carefully evaluated hunting incidents to identify risk factors and develop preventive measures. We analyzed 1,471 cases that were reported to the Japanese Hunting Association as fraternal insurance between 2007 and 2011. Most hunters responsible for the incidents were in their sixties and were veterans. Although these cases were treated as "hunting" incidents, the number of incidents associated with firearms was low. Only 144 (9.8%) of all "hunting" incidents were related to firearms, and 18.6% of the cases resulted in death. The most frequent factor responsible for firearm-related incidents was improper handling of firearms. In cases where the victim was mistaken for game, at least 61.5% of the victims were wearing fluorescent orange clothing. It was clear that the main cause of firearm-related incidents was violation of basic hunting rules. Therefore, a new qualification system is required for hunters and managers so that they can demonstrate their understanding of basic hunting principles.

Past major earthquakes have been associated with an increase in the prevalence of vertigo or dizziness; the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes on April 14 and 16 (JST, moment magnitude=7.0, Shindo 7 [Japanese seismic scale]) and the large numbers of aftershocks were no exception. Several months after the initial earthquake, significant outbreaks of vertigo or dizziness occurred over a large area surrounding the epicenter of the earthquake. However, it is unclear why major earthquakes cause these symptoms. After the major earthquake in Kumamoto, we conducted a questionnaire and medical records survey to investigate post-earthquake dizziness (PED). This survey covered a total of 575 subjects who complained of exacerbation of vertigo or dizziness after the earthquake and visited the hospital for follow-up before the scheduled dates. Our results showed that the number of patients with vertigo or dizziness who visited the hospital increased after the earthquake, and peaked between 2 and 4 weeks after the earthquake. The timing of onset of vestibular disorders varied according to the underlying disease. This study also suggested that earthquake-related psychological stress or stress resulting from earthquake evacuation could cause the onset of some vestibular disorders. We speculated that PED could be caused by stimulation of the vestibular and visual systems and bathyesthesia, psychological stress, potential effects of autonomic stress on the equilibrium function, and/or sensory mismatch. Our study could contribute to establishing PED as a new concept in the area of vestibular disorders.

ヒステリー性(神経)症は,解離性(転換性)障害(ICD-10)に相当する.解離性障害では症状の原因になる身体的障害がないこと,ストレス負荷となる心理的要因が存在する,などの条件が診断上必要である.意識障害との鑑別が問題となる「ヒステリー」は,その多くが解離性昏迷と解離性痙攣である.解離性昏迷はアピール性が高く,被暗示性が高く,弛緩性昏迷の形をとることが多い.意識障害を伴っていても軽度で,昏睡状態との鑑別が重要である.解離性痙攣は,一見てんかん発作に類似するが,いくつかの特徴で鑑別可能である.発作症状は本人の現実逃避手段だったり,疾病利得と絡んでいたり,通常の不安発作よりも難治である

Two cases of psychogenic hearing loss in adults are presented with the process of their mental states. Case 1 was a 20-year-old male who complained of unilateral hearing loss and tinnitus on his left side after receiving a “karate” kick on his left temple. Considering the perforation of his left tympanic membrane, his left hearing level was much worse (77.5 dBHL). Later examination of ABR revealed the sensorineural system to be intact, and functional hearing loss was suspected. Further questions about his history disclosed that he was extremely unhappy in his job and wanted to leave his present employment. After discussion with psychiatrists, the diagnosis of psychogenic hearing loss was established.Case 2 was a 23-year-old male who complained of right tinnitus after hearing rifle shooting during night time maneuvers in the Self Defense Forces. In spite of the normal appearances of his external and middle ear, his hearing level was 72.5dBHL. Being treated as acoustic trauma, ABR was performed and it resulted in a completely normal response. In this case, the diagnosis of psychogenic hearing loss was also established.Especially in adults, psychogenic hearing loss is regarded as a kind of conversion disorder. In this disease, getting ill brings some “gain” to the patients. Admission to the hospital separates a patient from his unpleasant job and persons (secondary gain). This is almost compatible with the mental state of case 1. When their desires are converted to physical disorders and are appreciated by another person, they don't have to be concerned by their source of annoyance. Thus their mental states are stabilized (primary gain). This is almost compatible with the mental state of case 2.When assessing patients of Psychogenic hearing loss, their mental states should be considered as there may be various processes involved in the disease.

近代日本の金融史研究は,日本銀行,都市銀行,地方銀行については相当量の研究の蓄積があるが,庶民金融についての研究は乏しい。典型的な庶民金融である質屋についてのこれまでの研究は,主として地方や東京の下町の質屋を対象として行われ,質屋は庶民が生活に窮して資金を調達するところであり,庶民から利子を収奪する高利貸であるといったイメージで語られがちであった。本研究では,統計類により東京の質屋全体の動向を俯瞰するとともに,従来研究の乏しかった東京都心の質屋である芝区のT質店にスポットを当て,1915年,25年,35年の質物台帳や顧客名簿といった基本帳簿類の分析を丹念に行った。その結果,質物にその時代の顧客の生活様式とその変化のようす(例えば生活の洋風化や余暇の拡大など)が如実に表れていること,顧客から見た質屋の基本的な役割は,庶民が日常生活を営むために必要な手元流動性を提供する小口,短期,動産担保の消費者金融機関であったことが確認された。

Reproductive traits of the Japanese hare, Lepus brachyurus, were investigated with 196 hares killed either by hunting, pest control or traffic accidents in Shizuoka Prefecture from 1984 to 1993. Average weight of testis started increasing from November, and reached the peak on March, then declined gradually from March to October, and the spermatogenesis ceased both September and October. Although the average weight of ovaries showed similar changes, the change started one month later than the testis. Detectable embryo were found in the samples from February to October. Assuming that breeding season was from first copulation to the last parturition, determined by the age of leverets captured in the wild, in which the whole ages were estimated by the body weight, the duration of the breeding season could be estimated to be 276 days. Embryo size ranged from single to triplets with an average of 1.6 ±0.7. Calculated average annual reproductive potential was 10.1 young per female.
