The 1855 Ansei-Edo earthquake caused severe damage to Tokyo (Edo) metropolitan area. The damage was the next to that in the 1923 Kanto earthquake. In this study, source parameters of the 1855 Ansei-Edo earthquake were estimated by obtaining a good match between the simulated strong ground motions by the empirical Green's function method and the macroseismic data (isoseismal map). The hypocenter of the earthquake is most plausible near the border of Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures at a depth of 68km, near the upper surface of the Pacific plate. The magnitude of 7.4 is the best estimate for interpreting the macroseismic data.

The rational design and development of stereocontrolled glycosidation reactions has been the subject of intensive investigations. Our interest in this context has been centered on the design of the leaving groups of glycosyl donors coupled with their activation without resorting to precious, explosive, or toxic heavy-metal salts as promoters. In an effort to capitalize on the phosphorus-containing leaving groups, we have recently devised new glycosyl donors incorporating diphenyl phosphate, diphenylphosphinimidate, N, N, N', N'-tetramethylphosphoroamidate, phosphorodiamidimidothioate, or diethyl phosphite as leaving groups, the glycosidations of which constitute mild and efficient methods for the highly stereocontrolled construction of 1, 2-trans-β-and 1, 2-cis-α-glycosidic linkages. In this paper, several notable features of the present glyosidation methods coupled with the mechanistic aspects are described.

The hydrophilic membrane of a final filter was dissolved by etoposide injection (Lastet) when administered to a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia by the continuous dosing method applied through a final filter. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effecacy (appearance, bubble point pressure and durability) of five final filters using etoposide injection and adjuvants. The results suggest that polyethylene glycol and ethanol in etoposide injection dissolved the cellulose membrane of the final filter, whereas the teflon membrane of the syringe-operated filter unit was valuable.

This paper focuses on the historical contributions of the Dutch-Japanese translators in the Edo era (they later served as English-Japanese translators as English took over from Dutch as a dominant foreign language) and their marginal position as communication mediators. Translation was a profession carried down from father to son in designated families. They were low-ranking government officials in Nagasaki. This was the only place open for trade with outside world for nearly 230 years while Japan was largely closed off. Although their status was low, as communication mediators they were privileged in having access to the most up-to-date knowledge and technology, and exposure to the alternative values of the West. There were, however, both positive and negative sides being at the cultural border : They could acquire the latest information so that some could develop and extend themselves in different fields, such as medicine, linguistics, and second language education. Without those translators, Western medicine could not have been studied widely by the Japanese medical doctors those days. Their accumulated knowledge of Dutch language, and the dictionaries they compiled undoubtedly smoothed the introduction of English. On the other hand, as mediators, their status was quite subordinate. They had no decision-making power and they seemed to have identity problems. As they worked closely with foreigners, it may easily be imagined that their personal ties with members of another cultural group might not always correspond to their assigned obligations and duties. There were also occasions when their group identity was perceived to be ambivalent, leading other fellow Japanese not to trust them. Although these translators were ignored by history, their contributions are worth reevaluating. The marginality inherent in the role of a mediator between two cultural groups merits special attention.

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the ability of cultured plant cells to transform not only secondary metabolites, but also organic foreign substrates. Therefore, we have studied in the feasibility of using plant cell cultures as the reagents of organic synthesis. In this symposium, we report the synthesis of biologically active com-pounds by using plant cell cultures (N. tabacum, D. carota, C. roseus, P. peltatum) as follows (1) Synthesis of optically active α-phenylpyridylmethanols as organic foreign substrates i) enantioselective reduction of ketone ii) asymmetric hydrolysis of the acetates iii) optically active alcohols production from the corresponding racemates (deracemization of racemates) (2) The efficient synthesis of podophyllotoxin derivatives as starting materials in the clinical anti-cancer drug, Etoposide

We found that neutral and cationic rhodium (I) complexes of (S,S)- or (R,R)-MOD-DIOP (1 or 2) showed very high enantio-selectivity in the catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of α-arylidenesuccinic acid half-esters (3). The optically active α-aryl-methylsuccinic acid half-esters (4) obtained are useful inter-madiates for the synthesis of optically active lignans. Total syntheses of (+)-collinusin (7), (-)-deoxypodophyllotoxin (9), and (+)-neoisostegane (14) were achieved using asymmetric hydrogenation catalyzed by the rhodium(I) complex with (S,S)-MOD-DIOP (2) as a key reaction. Thus, the absolute configurations of natural (+)-collinusin (7) and (+)-neoisostegane (14) were determined to be (R) and (M,6R,7R), respectively. The present asymmetric hydrogenation can provide a practical method for the synthesis of various optically active lignans.

日本で問題となっている「若者の政治参加度の低下」は熊本も例外ではない。若年代の投票率は全国平均を下回っている。若者が政治に対して高いハードルを感じ、知識をつける意識がないことがこの原因である。私たちはこの問題を解決する施策を提言する。 政治について簡潔にまとめられた本「かたる。」を配布し、その本をもとにしたクイズ番組「かたるTV」で本を活用する場を用意する。ただ「かたる。」を配布するだけでなく「かたるTV」を放送することで政治に対するハードルを下げ、若者の政治おける知識の蓄積と意見形成を促す。政治への関心を高めることで投票率を高める事ができる。若者の政治参加の活性化が積極的な意思表明につながり、若者が暮らしやすい社会が形成される。そのため熊本の人口流出を阻止し、若者の移住も見込めるため、政治だけでなく経済・教育など様々な面での活性化が期待でき、結果として熊本をより元気な県に導くことが可能である。
