A 12-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever was presented with forebrain signs. Brain MRI revealed a huge cystic lesion with the thickened falx in the frontal region. The brain parenchyma surrounding the lesion showed significant signs of a mass effect and also increased intracranial pressure. However, the dog suddenly became lucid after about two weeks, and an MRI scan one month after the initial study revealed a dramatically shrunken cystic lesion. The dog survived for over a year until it was euthanized for other reasons, and the brain lesion was diagnosed as a cystic meningioma histologically. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report that described the reduction of the cystic lesion of a cystic meningioma in dogs.

Resistin, one of the adipokines that has a cycteine-rich C-terminus, is considered to relate to the development of insulin resistance in rats. However, in cats, there is little knowledge regarding resistin. In this study, we cloned the feline resistin cDNA from adipose tissue by RT-PCR. The feline resistin clone contained an entire open reading frame encoding 107 amino acids that had 72.8%, 75.4%, 50.9% and 51.8% homology with bovine, human, mouse, and rat homologues, respectively. In both subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissues, the transcription levels of feline resistin mRNA were significantly higher in obese cats than normal cats, and those of feline adiponectin mRNA were significantly lower in obese cats than normal cats. However, there was no difference in the expression of feline leptin between normal and obese cats. On the other hand, in both normal and obese cats, there were no significant differences in resistin, leptin and adiponectin mRNA levels between subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissues. In cats, the altered expression of resistin and adiponectin mRNA with obesity may contribute to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and subsequent diabetes mellitus. In addition to feline adiponectin, the feline resistin cDNA clone obtained in this study will be useful for further investigation of the pathogenesis of obesity in cats.

Teaching critical thinking skills is among the top priorities for higher education in Japan and the United States. Ennis (1987) divides critical thinking skills into two types: dispositions and abilities. In Japan, Hirayama and Kusumi (2004) have developed a Japanese measurement called the Critical Thinking Dispositions Inventory (CTDI). This measurement consists of four subscales with 33 items. The responses are made using a five-point Likert scale. In four studies at a small private university in the Japanese metropolitan area, the CTDI was administered to more than 400 undergraduate students. Among the four subscales, the average highest rating was the score for "inquiry-mind" and the lowest score was for "self-confidence for logical thinking." These results hold true for the four studies, while the order of the other two subscales of "objectiveness" and "evidence-based judgment" varied among the four studies. In one study, about 50 students worked on the Wason selection task. Their performance was poor when the content of the task was purely logical and abstract, but the performance was much better when it was an everyday and pragmatic task, as argued by D'Andrade (1995). Those who successfully solved the everyday, real task rated themselves higher on the CTDI and higher on the subscale for "self-confidence for logical thinking." チアカリックス[4]アレーン-p-テトラスルホン酸(TCAS)は,pH 6.5付近の水溶液中でTb(III)とほとんど錯形成しないが,TCASの架橋硫黄と親和性の高いCd(II)を加えると,自発的にCd2Tb2(TCAS)2錯体を形成しエネルギー移動発光を示す.そこで本錯体の形成を用いCd(II)の発光定量法を開発した.Cd(II)の検出限界(S/N=3)は2.08 nM(0.23 ppb)という良好な値であった.さらに,本法を米試料中Cd定量へ適用した.酸分解後の米試料に含まれるリン酸イオンはキレートディスクによって除去,また,Cu(II)はイミノ二酢酸によってマスキングし,妨害を除去した.前処理,定量操作を行ったときのCd検出限界は,1 gの米試料を分解して本操作を施したとすると米中12.2 ppbのCdに相当する.これは国内基準値0.4 ppmと比べ十分に低い値である.実際に,認証値(Cd: 0.548 ppm)付きの米標準試料を測定したところ0.564 ppmという良好な結果が得られた.

著者らは汚れの付着した金属表面上で集中的にOHラジカル (・OH) を発生させることを原理とする新たな洗浄手法を開発した.すなわち, 過酸化水素を含む水溶液に汚れの付着した金属表面を浸し, その状態で負電位を印加する.H2O2分子が金属表面で電子を受け取ることにより, きわめて酸化力が高い・OHが発生し, 汚れ物質を速やかに酸化分解し, 金属表面から除去することができる.すでに, タンパク質をモデル汚れ物質として, H2O2-電気分解洗浄における洗浄機構と有効性を検証している.本稿では, H2O2-電気分解洗浄における諸因子の影響の把握と洗浄効率のさらなる効率化を図るため, (1) 支持電解質の種類および濃度の影響, (2) 基板材質の影響, (3) 吸着物質 (タンパク質および脂質) の種類の影響, (4) 共存物質の影響について検討した.その結果, H2O2-電気分解洗浄においてアンモニウム化合物やリン酸イオンが存在するとモデル汚れ物質 (タンパク質) の除去速度が格段に向上することを明らかにした.また, 各種モデル汚れ物質や基板材質に対する有効性についても検証した.

The late Emeritus Professor Tsutomu Katsuki, who was leading the field of catalytic asymmetric oxidation worldwide, suddenly passed away on October 30, 2014. Here we wish to commemorate him by highlighting his representative research works particularly on his unique catalytic systems for asymmetric alkene epoxidation, sulfoxidation, alcohol oxidation, oxidative coupling reactions with a personal view and memory.

Cell-crawling migration plays an essential role in complex biological phenomena. It is now generally believed that many processes essential to such migration are regulated by microtubules in many cells, including fibroblasts and neurons. However, keratocytes treated with nocodazole, which is an inhibitor of microtubule polymerization – and even keratocyte fragments that contain no microtubules – migrate at the same velocity and with the same directionality as normal keratocytes. In this study, we discovered that not only these migration properties, but also the molecular dynamics that regulate such properties, such as the retrograde flow rate of actin filaments, distributions of vinculin and myosin II, and traction forces, are also the same in nocodazole-treated keratocytes as those in untreated keratocytes. These results suggest that microtubules are not in fact required for crawling migration of keratocytes, either in terms of migrating properties or of intracellular molecular dynamics.

近年の高齢化社会では加齢による身体機能の低下を考慮した製品が必要とされているが,設計者が若く高齢者の不便さがわかりづらいことが問題である.本研究では視覚において高齢者に優しい製品設計のための若年デザイナ支援として,CGと画像処理を用いた高齢者の視覚シミュレーション方法を提案,システムを構築した.また,提案システムをもとに,加齢による焦点ボケと色の変化に関してデザイン補正を自動に行う方法を提案した.
