This article focuses on Tokugawa Harutomi's movements around the Gagaku. Tokugawa Harutomi was the 10th feudal lord of the Kishu domain. And this article examines what the Gagaku music and the musical instruments meant to him and how he was involved in Gagaku by analyzing "Nishihama Goten Bugaku No Zu" (owned by Wakayama City Museum) in detail. The painting of "Nishihama Goten Bugaku No Zu" (owned by Wakayama City Museum) is almost the same as the content of "Gakutan: Nishihama Goten Bugaku No Ki" written by Motoori Oohira, scholar of the Kokugaku, from the Kishu domain. Therefore, it was considered that the painting showed the scene of the Bugaku held by Tokugawa Harutomi in October of the 6th year of the Bunsei era (1823). However, there are some differences between the painting and the content of the "Bugaku No Ki", and there is a possibility that the Bugaku held on another day was shown in the painting. As a result of focusing attention on the difference in depicture of seasons and making a detailed survey of the existing historical materials, it was found that the painting might depict the Bugaku held at Nishihama Goten in March of the 10th year of the Tempo era (1839).In addition, as a result of analyzing the details further, it is pointed that Nishihama Goten was depicted as a graceful "garden painting" with a specific image of "Bugaku" and as a political space in which the master-servant relationship is clear. It is also assumed that Harutomi intended to position himself as a person having strong power culturally and politically by using such a court noble's residence as depicted in classical paintings for the image of the garden and overlapping the picture of Harutomi himself with the picture of a court noble or the emperor. This is deeply related with the position of Harutomi after he went into retirement at Nishihama Goten. With the intent of the shogunate, Harutomi had to reluctantly hand over the position of domain lord to his daughter's husband, and to him, Nishihama Goten was a "palace" as a substitute for "castle".In other words, it seems that this painting was depicted with the intention of showing that Nishihama Goten was a political and cultural center by solemnifying Nishihama Goten as a graceful place using the image of "Bugaku" and that Harutomi was a strong person of power who dominates the place.

This article reports research on the musical instrument collection of the heirloom of the Kishu- Tokugawa Family (owned by the National Museum of Japanese History) conducted in 2008 and 2009. Many instruments of this collection compiled by Tokugawa Harutomi, the 10th feudal lord of the Kishu domain, are Gagaku instruments. In this article, mainly, Gakuso, Kotoji and Kotozume are described. Aside from this collection, five pieces of koto are owned by the National Museum of Japanese History, and research on three pieces of koto was conducted in 2009, which is also reported in this article. Therefore, this article describes a total of eight pieces of koto, that is, five pieces in the collection ([Kimi ga chitose][Hagiku][Musashino][Kouu][Kumokari]) and three pieces that are not included in the collection ([Matsukaze][Yamashitamizu][Koto (tando) ]) and a total of 13 sets of Kotoji, that is, 12 sets included in the collection and one set not included in the collection ( accessories of the koto[Matsukaze]) . For Kotozume, seven sets were researched. Among them, 6 sets are included in the collection. The research was conducted through the study of the tradition and history based on the accompanying documents and the catalogues and the measurement and observation of the instruments themselves. Musical instrument history research faces the obstacle of insufficient information about tradition and history. Concerning this collection, there are plenty of accompanying documents added at the time of collecting the musical instruments. In this research, the insides of the instruments were also observed with a fiberscope. As a result, the existence of burn marks and writing in sumi ink were revealed, which were not mentioned in the accompanying documents. Also, the state of chisel cuts which were made inside the koto for sound effects and the reinforcing method of the inside using a beam plate were clarified. Many of the musical instruments researched seem to have been made in the Edo Period, but there is a possibility that some of them were made before the Edo Period. Among all the musical instruments including the instruments not included in the collection, musical instruments used as Zokuso ( vulgar koto) are included. This example of the study of kotorelated materials about Koto, Kotoji and Kotozume will contribute to musical instrument history research, which requires many case examples.

This article reports the research on the biwa in the musical instrument collection of the heirloom of the Kishu-Tokugawa Family held at the National Museum of Japanese History in 2009 and discusses the research results. This research was conducted on 22 pieces of Japanese biwa excluding Chinese pipa among 23 pieces of biwa in the same collection. The first purpose of this research was to provide the basic data through observation and measurement, which was used to study the characteristics of biwa as musical instruments. The second purpose was to clarify the structure and manufacturing technique of biwa through radiography of the body and observation of the inside of sô ( back board) with a small camera. The third purpose was to observe the characters written in sumi ink inside the back board using a small camera. In the body of biwa, information written in sumi ink about the manufacturing and repair of the instrument was often found. It has a higher authenticity than the information of the accompanying documents, which may have been replaced or created. The outcomes of the research conducted for the purposes described above are as follows: First, it was considered appropriate to classify the biwa into the following three groups: large-, medium- and small-sizes, based on the measurement results. There were eight medium-sized biwa of more than 80 cm but less than 90 cm, and this size of biwa may often have been used as with largesized biwa. Conventionally, medium-sized biwa and small-sized biwa of less than 80 cm were hardly discussed. There are few small-sized biwa, which had particular uses. So they should be separated from medium-sized biwa from now.Next, the basic structure of biwa could be observed using the Unkaku (H-46-103) that was disassembled, and through the observation and radiography of the inside of body with a small camera, the special structure of biwa was revealed.Furthermore, the adhesive traces of 5 frets show that 3 pieces of biwa were obviously used as the heikebiwa. Judging from the documents and the shape of plectrum, it is considered that the 3 pieces of biwa were added to this collection so that they were used as the gagakubiwa. Basically, the heikebiwa is similar to the medium-sized biwa of Gagaku. The differences are in the accessorial parts such as the moon-shaped decoration on the plectrum-face, frets and upper bridge. Therefore, it was found that it was possible to use the heikebiwa as the gagakubiwa. Many other things such as the ideas on manufacturing of details and the repair method were clarified through the observation. Also, it was found that the plectrum, which had been considered to be the plectrum for heikebiwa, was the plectrum for the môsôbiwa in the Satsuma Domain, and one aspect of the musical instrument history of the satsumabiwa was revealed. The measurement results of this research can be used in various ways. The effectiveness of the observation of the inside of the sô (back board) and the radiography was verified, which indicates the future direction of instrument research for biwa.

Among the musical instruments of the heirloom of Kishu-Tokugawa Family, 27 pieces of Ryuteki/ Nokan in total owned by the National Museum of Japanese History were investigated through close observation and radiography.Observation by a high precision electron microscope revealed that vine such as cane or calamus instead of birch was wound around Aoyagi (H46-39) , which had been considered to be "Hira kabamaki," and that some Ryuteki had a weight formed into a Buddha statue inserted into its head. This investigation produced many such new findings that had not been revealed by past research. There was a case where the pipe body did not agree with the accompanying document, and there is a possibility that the pipes changed places. As an example, it is inferred that the Nokan called Gasho (H46-53) is the "Kokyo no Nishiki" mentioned in Meikanroku, judging from the accessories and the pattern of Kashiragane ( decorative end cap) at the head. The specific time is not known, but there seems to have been confusion over the actual status of the collection. Since some point in time, Kishu Tokugawa Family's collection has been scattered and lost gradually. Further investigation is needed to check against the facts.

After World War II ended, the Case Study House Program founded by Arts & Architecture editor John Entenza in Southern California gained widespread attention through its architects' thoughtful and innovative consideration of ways to solve the severe housing shortage. This study examines these architects' conceptions of the ideal house by comparing their design theories and building compositions of these houses suggested in the Case Study House Program. While these architects were brought together through the common goal to design the ideal house, their actual designs varied considerably. Therefore, this study compares the architects' individual ideologies as expressed in their designs to examine the multifaceted aspects of this program.
