We investigated cognitive processes of the information seeking on the WWW and the effects of subjects' knowledge and experience on their processes and performance through the protocol analysis. In our experiments, the subjects were assigned to an expert or a novice condition, and required to solve two search tasks. We analyzed the protocol data on the basis of the two space model of scientific discovery suggested by Simon & Lea (1981). We applied this model to the information seeking on the WWW. The information seeking processes on the WWW were considered as the processes of searching the Keyword space and the Web space. The experimental results showed that (1) due to the effects of knowledge and experience, the experts' performance of finding a target was higher than that of the novices, (2) when searching each space, the experts searched each space in detail but the novices did not, and (3) when shifting from one space to the other, the experts searched the two spaces alternately, but the novices tended to cling to a search of one of the two spaces.

近年,ナシ黒星病の発生は増加傾向を示しているが,リンゴ黒星病の発生は緩やかに減少している.このため,両病菌の分生子の発芽および菌糸の生存に対する高温の影響を調査した.その結果,分生子の発芽は35°Cおよび40°Cにおいてリンゴ黒星病菌の方がナシ黒星病菌よりも強く阻害され,菌糸の生存は40°Cにおいてリンゴ黒星病菌が全て死滅したのに対してナシ黒星病菌では多くの個体が生存した.以上のことから,リンゴ黒星病菌の方がナシ黒星病菌より高温耐性が低いことが明らかとなり,このことが近年の温暖化に伴うリンゴ黒星病の発生減少の要因の一つとなっていることが示唆された.

Objectives: Many aging workers wish to continue working as long as they can for a better life in the future. However, symptoms of pain are a key obstacle in the continuation of work among older workers. The impact of pain on work is understudied. Thus, we investigated the relationship between pain characteristics (total site and severity) and aging workers' working life expectancy scale (WoLES) in Korea. Methods: We included 1,979 participants (1,175 men and 804 women) from a well-established survey of a nationally representative population: the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. A self-questionnaire was used to assess pain characteristics and WoLES. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the lower-WoLES group were calculated using multiple logistic regression models. Results: Compared with the absence of pain, ORs and 95% CIs of the lower-WoLES group were increased, as follows: 1 pain site, 1.75 (1.20-2.55); 2 pain sites, 1.99 (1.32-3.03); 3 or more pain sites, 2.28 (1.51-3.42); mild pain, 1.74 (1.32-2.61); moderate pain, 2.02 (1.28-3.22); and severe pain, 2.12 (1.46-3.08). The statistical trend was significant in both total sites and severity of pain (p<0.001). Conclusions: There was a significant association between WoLES and both total pain sites and severity of pain, even after adjusting for potential confounding factors.

本研究では歩行ロボットの新形態として,三足歩行ロボットとその歩行制御の一方法を提案する.そもそも奇数脚歩行は従来よりほとんど研究されてこなかったが,三足歩行においては二足歩行の機動性・軽量性と四足歩行の安定性を兼備できることが期待される.本研究では120度回転対称かつ少数のアクチュエータを有する軽量な三足機構を提案し,歩行制御問題を歩様設計と各脚制御の二段階に分離することによってアプローチする.

近年, さまざまな環境問題が発生し, 環境に対する関心が高まっている. 本稿では,「写真を提供するサービス」を, 銀塩を使う「銀塩写真システム」と銀塩を使わない「デジタル写真システム」に分類し, それぞれの地球環境に及ぼす影響を, ライフサイクルアセスメント手法を用いて地球温暖化, 資源消費, 固形廃棄物の3つの観点で評価することを試みた. その中で, それぞれのシステムの環境面での特徴と違いを明らかし, 環境負荷低減のための着目点について考察した.

We studied oviposition preference of Pieris rapae females toward Rorippa indica plants exposed to different treatments (uninfested, artificially damaged and infested by P. rapae larvae)in a cage at an experimental field site. The females preferred uninfested plants to infested or artificially damaged ones and artificially damaged plants to infested ones. The data suggested that the females used chemicals emitted from damaged leaves to avoid unsuitable host plants. We conclude that the avoidance behavior of Pieris females towards infested food plants is adaptive for offspring from the viewpoint of not only resource availability but also parasitoid avoidance.

The purpose of this study is to examine, based on a case study in Myanmar, the challenges to be addressed in exporting Japanese first-language education to countries overseas. The author visits Myanmar for around 30 days every year as an adviser on first-language education for the Japan International Cooperation Agency's (JICA) “Project for Curriculum Reform at Primary Level of Basic Education in Myanmar”. Through these visits, the following strengths of first-language education in Japan have been identified: the first-language education system is well established; there is an accumulation of expertise; and the Japanese language has a unique nature. On the other hand, the following challenges need to be addressed in order to transfer the first-language education of Japan to overseas countries: translation of literature into English; construction of research databases; opportunities for international meetings and discussions; multilingual and multicultural research; and human resource development in the field of international contributions.

To help users select and understand people while searching for them, we present a method of assigning Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC), which is a system of library classification numbers, to people on the web. By assigning NDC numbers to people, we can assign not only labels to people but also build a NDC-based people-search directory. We use a relative index in NDC, which lists the related index terms attached to NDC. We count the number of relative index terms contained in the titles of web pages (HTML files) and assign the top five NDC9 numbers to people. We developed a prototype of a people-search directory by assigning NDC9 numbers to HTML files that were manually classified from web people-search results. We evaluated the usefulness of our approach by comparing four methods and six documents and found that our method (extracting relative index terms) from the titles of web pages outperformed other methods and documents.

Quality assurance and correct taxonomic affiliation of data submitted to public sequence databases have been an everlasting problem. The DDBJ Fast Annotation and Submission Tool (DFAST) is a newly developed genome annotation pipeline with quality and taxonomy assessment tools. To enable annotation of ready-to-submit quality, we also constructed curated reference protein databases tailored for lactic acid bacteria. DFAST was developed so that all the procedures required for DDBJ submission could be done seamlessly online. The online workspace would be especially useful for users not familiar with bioinformatics skills. In addition, we have developed a genome repository, DFAST Archive of Genome Annotation (DAGA), which currently includes 1,421 genomes covering 179 species and 18 subspecies of two genera, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus, obtained from both DDBJ/ENA/GenBank and Sequence Read Archive (SRA). All the genomes deposited in DAGA were annotated consistently and assessed using DFAST. To assess the taxonomic position based on genomic sequence information, we used the average nucleotide identity (ANI), which showed high discriminative power to determine whether two given genomes belong to the same species. We corrected mislabeled or misidentified genomes in the public database and deposited the curated information in DAGA. The repository will improve the accessibility and reusability of genome resources for lactic acid bacteria. By exploiting the data deposited in DAGA, we found intraspecific subgroups in Lactobacillus gasseri and Lactobacillus jensenii, whose variation between subgroups is larger than the well-accepted ANI threshold of 95% to differentiate species. DFAST and DAGA are freely accessible at https://dfast.nig.ac.jp.

Volpi (2004) pointed out that Alessandro Valignano, a 16th century Christian missionary, had considered the Japanese extreme collectivists. According to Volpi, his remark was based on Valignano’s reports (1583, 1592) edited by Alvares-Taladriz (1954). However, it is highly questionable whether Volpi examined these texts directly because the information about them provided by Volpi involved many serious errors. A thorough inspection of Valignano’s translated reports found no mention of Japanese collectivism. On the contrary, he had actually reported exceedingly individualistic behaviors of Japanese warriors. Such behaviors are consistent with what is widely known about the 16th century Civil Wars in Japan. It has thus turned out that no reliable evidence is present for the alleged observation by Valignano.
