1840年代のアメリカ合衆国では、フランスの社会改革思想家シャルル・フーリエの思想が輸入され、ファランクスと呼ばれる実験的共同社会が各地で形成された。また1848年フォックス姉妹によりラッピングと呼ばれる霊との交信が報告されて以来、スピリチュアリズムと呼ばれる思想が流行した。この二つは奴隷制廃止や初期のフェミニズム思想など社会改革思想を共有し、まだ現代的意味における「科学」という概念が確立されていなかった当時、現代的意味での科学と疑似科学による経験的実証主義をもってそれら改革思想の正当性を主張した結果、互いが関連しあいながら19世紀半ばのアメリカにおける社会改革運動の一翼を担ったと考えられる。一方、ナサニエル・ホーソンの小説The House of the Seven Gablesでは、こうした社会改革運動の特徴を反映して、複数の登場人物により「科学的」改革思想のレトリックが反復される。本稿では,科学的言説と結びついた改革思想を作品より抽出し、フーリエ主義とスピリチュアリズムが協調して提示した理想の社会実現に向けての展望をこの作品から考察していく。

In Japan, ethnic/international schools are placed separately to the public education system. However, these days the number of students who share more diverse cultures and backgrounds are increasing. It is, therefore, a natural step to incorporate these schools into the system, or at least create closer linkages between them and public schools. In this paper, a tentative approach of how ethnic/international schools should be placed in the public education system in Japan is presented. This paper presents a tentative approach to establishing firm links with ethnic/international schools and placing them within the Japanese public educational system under the guise of private schools. The characteristics and conditions of both private schools and schools supported by public funds are considered by example of such a school in the United Kingdom. In addition the case of a private Kenkoku school that has been given accreditation as a fomal school is examined.

The number of glass particles arising in parenteral solution upon cutting of ampules was determined with use of 5-ml transparent and brown ampules. Cutting by “cracking” produced most satisfactory results of all methods devised. It was found as a result of the investigation by X-ray fluoroscopy that the solution contained in the ampules was almost completely free from particles from a file used for cutting. Mice injected intravenously into the tail with large amount of glass particles from ampule died of shock due to multiple pulmonary thrombosis. Tubercles caused by glass particles were observed in mice which survived the experiment without acute symptoms.

声帯機能不全(vocal cords dysfunction:VCD)は,吸気時に開大するべき声帯が内転し,閉塞するため気流制限が生じ呼吸困難をきたす.聴診される連続性ラ音は,吸・呼気相の全肺野で聴診されることもあり,喘息との鑑別は困難である.またVCDは喘息と併存することもある.そのためステロイド治療に抵抗性であるが,投与される症例がある.今回,10歳女児のVCDと10歳男児の喘息児の連続性ラ音をβ2刺激薬吸入前後で呼吸音解析(LSA 2000)を施行し検討した.解析結果では,VCDは,最強度を示した周波数は,130 Hzであった.それは,喘息の最強度の周波数よりも低周波数帯域で吸気に多く記録されており,またβ2刺激薬吸入で改善を認めなかった.小児では,両疾患の発作時に肺機能検査や喉頭鏡などの検査は困難なことがある.呼吸音解析は,安静呼吸で行う非侵襲的検査である.今回の2症例においては,呼吸音解析による鑑別診断の可能性が示唆された.

This paper reviews research on computational approaches to metaphor comprehen-sion, and discusses some general issues on the study of language and cognition, i.e.,embodied cognition and roles of computational models in research on language and cog-nition. The reason for choosing metaphors as the topic of this paper is that metaphors pervade language, involve intricately related processes, and provoke interdisciplinary in-terests. Because of these features, computational studies of metaphor can provide many useful insights into the characteristics and possible roles of computational models.

This article discusses the meaning of the "score mark" left on the Sasanian and Arab-Sasanian silver coins discovered in 1959 at Wuqia in the Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region of northwest China.<br>The Wuqia hoard was studied by Chinese and Japanese researchers, including the present author, and the results were published in 2003. The hoard consists of 918 Sasanian and Arab-Sasanian silver drachms with dates between A. D. 588 and 679.<br>During our study of those coins, a number of discoveries were made. One of them was the presence of "score marks" in the margin of 84 coins. By comparing the "score marks" with other characteristics of the coins, the mark was determined to be related to the "countermark". A "countermark" is a stamp or mark impressed on a coin to verify its use by another government, or to indicate revaluation. Similar sets of "score marks" and "countermarks" also appear on other Sasanian silver coins stored in private and public collections.<br>Thus, the author concludes that the "score mark" was probably used to test the quality of the silver before striking a specific "countermark".

On 26 July 2012, localized rainfall from four isolated convective cells was observed by the Phased Array Weather Radar (PAWR) located in Osaka, Japan. The PAWR can observe fine three-dimensional features of precipitation every 30 seconds. In this paper, we investigated the evolution of localized isolated convective cells using the PAWR data. The first echoes appeared at around 5 km altitude, and light rain (25 dBZ) near the ground started in 3 to 5 minutes after the first echo. Heavy rain (50 dBZ) started in 9 to 15 minutes after the first echo. The lifespan of four convective cells was from 40 to 70 minutes.The reflectivity centroid over 25 dBZ (C25) of the first echo in developing stage descended first and then ascended within the several minutes. The behavior of the first echo motion looked complicated and it is difficult to be explained by the traditional conceptual model. In dissipation stage, the descending C25 was stopped by an alternation of precipitation core.
