A 12-year-old castrated male Shih Tzu presented to the hospital with hematuria that had lasted for about 1 month. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed hydronephrosis due to a mass in the left urinary tract and a left adrenal tumor. Adrenal glandectomy and nephroureterectomy were performed. The histopathological examination revealed concurrent adrenocortical adenoma and pheochromocytoma in the same adrenal gland. A fibroepithelial polyp developed in the left ureter, with subsequent hydronephrosis. There was no recurrence or metastasis of adrenocortical adenoma, pheochromocytoma or the ureteral fibroepithelial polyp after surgical removal.

The Extraterrestrial Sample Curation Center of JAXA curates the Hayabusa-returned samples in conditions of minimum terrestrial contaminants, because these samples are very tiny. We evaluated the cleanliness of the handling instruments, the cleanroom environments and the sample storage chamber to improve the cleanliness of particles, organic molecules and metallic elements to a level not to affect the analyses of the Hayabusa-returned samples. In the environment of the clean chamber No. 2 where the samples have been stored, the organic molecule abundance was lower than the detection limit, furthermore, metallic elemental concentrations were the lowest among other evaluated place. A multi-stage ultrasonic cleaning by organic solvents and the ultrapure water have been applied to instruments made of stainless steel and/or aluminum alloy, and additionally, acid-alkali liquids cleaning have been performed for those made of quartz glasses. For the cleanliness of quartz glasses after the cleaning, the organic molecules abundances were blank level, and the metallic element concentrations were 1~100×109atom/cm2/24 h. It was confirmed by optical microscope that no particle of size more than 10 μm was observed on quartz glasses after the cleaning.

This study is designed to clarify the changes of composition and enzyme activities of the small intestinal mucosa in fasted rats.Starvation for 3 days caused marked decreases in body weight, DNA and protein of small intestinal mucosa, and the activities of digestive enzymes.After starvation for 3 days, rats were refed with the laboratory chow for 1, 3 and 7 days.1) The body weight of rats recovered in 3 days.2) The recovery of the small intestinal mucosa was very rapid, especially its dry weight and DNA.3) Both sucrase and alkaline phosphatase activities increased markedly, then returned to the control level in 7 days.

Research and development of CO2 capture technologies are of great importance in the context of global warming mitigation. Among those, amines are the most widely used compounds to remove CO2 from a gas stream. In this article, amine-based CO2 capture methods are briefly reviewed with a particular focus on amine-CO2 chemistry, CO2 solubility in amine solvent, and its pressure dependence. It is also described how the molecular structure of amine affects the CO2 absorption-desorption performance by comparing several amines.

Detection of anomalous cells such as cancer cells from normal blood cells has the potential to contribute greatly to cancer diagnosis and therapy. Conventional methods for the detection of cancer cells are usually tedious and cumbersome. Herein, we report on the use of a particle size analyzer for the convenient size-based differentiation of cancer cells from normal cells. Measurements made using a particle size analyzer revealed that size parameters for cancer cells are significantly greater (e.g., inner diameter and width) than the corresponding values for normal cells (white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes and splenocytes), with no significant difference in shape parameters (e.g., circularity and convexity). The inner diameter of many cancer cell lines is greater than 10 µm, in contrast to normal cells. For the detection of WBC having similar size to that of cancer cells, we developed a PC software “Cancer Cell Finder” that differentiates them from cancer cells based on brightness stationary points on a cell surface. Furthermore, the aforementioned method was validated for cancer cell/clusters detection in spiked mouse blood samples (a B16 melanoma mouse xenograft model) and circulating tumor cell cluster-like particles in the cat and dog (diagnosed with cancer) blood samples. These results provide insights into the possible applicability of the use of a particle size analyzer in conjunction with PC software for the convenient detection of cancer cells in experimental and clinical samples for theranostics.

国内の大学競技レベルにおけるスポーツ関連脳振盪(SRC)に関する情報発信の実際を調査した結果,一般公開されているSRCのガイドラインは11団体で確認された.今後の課題としては,Risk reductionに関して明記している団体が少ないことが明らかとなった.SRCのガイドラインは競技規則や競技特性に合わせて策定する必要があり,今後より多くの競技団体から情報発信されることや,実際に活動している者へ最新情報を届けることが重要である.

本研究は、地方都市郊外の景観構造の変遷の特徴を明らかにすることを目的とした。愛媛県松山市郊外に位置する余土地区と久米地区を研究対象地とし、地形図や空中写真、その他歴史資料をもとに、近代から現代に至るまでの景観変容を記述し、その発展過程を分析した。結果として、旧農村由来の農地単位には、エリアが市街地化されていく過程で農地や空地を含むいくつかの過渡的な土地利用パターンが存在することがわかった。また、それらのパターンは段階的に、余土地区では同心円状に分布し、久米地区では南部の低地方向への分布傾向が確認され、すなわち地区の自然条件や公共施設及び土地基盤整備等のインフラ整備事業の履歴によって違いが見出されることが示唆された。

A major limitation of traditional chemotherapy for cancer is dose-limiting toxicity, caused by the exposure of non-tumor cells to cytotoxic agents. Use of molecular targeted drugs, such as specific kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies, is a possible solution to overcome this limitation and has achieved clinical success so far. Use of an antibody–drug conjugate (ADC) is a rational strategy for improving efficacy and reducing systemic adverse events. ADCs use antibodies selectively to deliver a potent cytotoxic agent to tumor cells, thus drastically improving the therapeutic index of chemotherapeutic agents. Lessons learned from clinical failure of early ADCs during the 1980s to 90s have recently led to improvements in ADC technology, and resulted in the approval of four novel ADCs. Nonetheless, further advances in ADC technology are still required to streamline their clinical efficacy and reduce toxicity. [fam-] Trastuzumab deruxtecan (DS-8201a) is a next-generation ADC that satisfies these requirements based on currently available evidence. DS-8201a has several innovative features; a highly potent novel payload with a high drug-to-antibody ratio, good homogeneity, a tumor-selective cleavable linker, stable linker-payload in circulation, and a short systemic half-life cytotoxic agent in vivo; the released cytotoxic payload could exert a bystander effect. With respect to its preclinical profiles, DS-8201a could provide a valuable therapy with a great potential against HER2-expressing cancers in clinical settings. In a phase I trial, DS-8201a showed acceptable safety profiles with potential therapeutic efficacy, with the wide therapeutic index.
