Variations of the level of ground water were observed at four stations near the epicenter of the shallow earthquake (M4.6) which occurred in the southern part of the Lake Biwa which has been recently a low seismicity region.About ten days before the occurrence of the earthquake anomalous changes of the water level were observed. Considering the relation between the variation of water level and rainfall in the ordinary period these anomalous changes were precursors of the earthquake.Co-seismic steps of the water level were observed at two stations. One of them was a sudden ascent which was observed at the region where initial P motions were compressional. At another station which was in the dilatational P region sudden descents were recorded.Such characteristic variations of the ground water level are detectable by using deep wells when an earthquake occur conspicuously in the low seismicity region, even if its magnitude is small.

A new system for the temporary observation of earthquakes have been developed. Analogue memories by CMOS-RAM and usual audio cassette stereophonic recorder are used for the system. They are well developed and cheap. Seismic wave signals and time code signals are holded in the memories by the trigger signal and recorded into a cassette as the audio signals converted by high frequency sampling clock. Multichannel observation is possible by the channel serial output.Playback of signals is done by the simple memory system converting signals from audio frequency to the suitable frequency. Audio signal analyzers are also available for the direct playback signals of the tape recorder.In the case of two-channels. recorder which wee call OM-2 type, , using WM-D6C recorder with Dolby-B noise reduction system, 46-db dynamic range can be gotten for each channel. We are observing microearthquakes at more than 20 temporary stations by the recorders with a high-gain and a low-gain channel for one component vertical senser to get records of microearthquakes and unsaturated records of largee shocks. About 900 eventss are stored in a 60 minutes cassette tape in this case.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) は、1983年にWarrenとMarshallにより慢性胃炎患者の胃粘膜より分離培養されたグラム陰性菌である。H. pyloriの発見は、胃疾患をめぐる状況に劇的な変化をもたらした。慢性胃炎がH. pyloriという起炎菌による感染症として理解されるようになり、さらに, H. pyloriが胃十二指腸潰瘍、さらには胃癌、胃悪性リンパ腫に関連する重要な因子であることが明らかにされてきた。H. pylori感染胃粘膜にみられる病理組織学的変化は, 細菌側の因子とこれに対する宿主側の反応が絡み合って形成される。胃炎惹起や胃発ガンのメカニズムの解明が分子レベルで急速に進んでいる。H. pyloriの感染診断法には, 内視鏡検査を必要としない非侵襲的検査法 (尿素呼気試験、抗体測定法、便中抗原測定法) と, 内視鏡検査を必要をとする侵襲的検査法 (迅速ウレアーゼ試験、鏡検法、培養法) がある。それぞれの検査法には長所や短所があるのでその特徴を理解した上で選択することが肝要である。

The roles of topography on the propagation of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) are discussed using an aqua-planet of the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM) with a 220-km horizontal mesh. Four topographical configurations with different land-sea masks and elevations are tested using a zonally non-uniform fixed-SST distribution. Explicit cloud microphysics is used to obtain MJO-like signals. Broad land cover generally weakens convection because of reduced surface latent heat flux (LHF). Forced lifting because of topography enhances local convection on the upwind side of high topography. It is suggested that the zonal contrasts of LHF are one reason for the delayed eastward propagation of the MJO-like disturbances. When only the eastern portion of the convective envelope is over land where the LHF is small, the LHF becomes rear-heavy, resulting in delayed eastward propagation. As the entire convective envelope proceeds over land, its contrast decreases or even reverses, resulting in faster eastward propagation.

末梢性T細胞リンパ腫は,リンパ腫の約10%を占める不均一な疾患単位の非Hodgkin T細胞性リンパ腫であり,病因も不明な点が多い.標準的治療法が未確立で,初回治療としてはCHOP療法等が選択されるが,治療効果は不十分で予後不良である.自家,同種造血幹細胞移植も行われるが有用性は明らかではない.生命予後の改善のためには,今後モノクローナル抗体等の新規治療法との併用治療も含めて,標準的治療法の確立が望まれる.

Transcriptional gene silencing (TGS) is a phenomenon by which transgenes that share homology in their promoter regions are inactivated. TGS is known to be reduced by using different promoters to drive the expression of each transgene. However, in order to perform a large-scale genetic screen in which overexpression lines are mutagenized by T-DNA tagging and therefore harbor two types of transgene, it is critical to develop a technique that consistently blocks TGS. Here, I report a versatile method that completely prevents TGS in transgenic Arabidopsis. A seedling morphology-based assay demonstrated that TGS could be significantly diminished by using different terminator sequences for each transgene. Furthermore, it was suggested that TGS might be reduced if the orientations of the two T-DNA sequences were reversed relative to each other. By combining these strategies, I showed that TGS was completely blocked in over 50,000 T1 plants. These findings present a thorough and versatile method to prevent TGS that is potentially applicable to various plant species and is expected to be used in diverse situations, from basic to applied research fields.

Recent studies of interaction research have revealed that mind in the interaction is embodied in gesture in the material world as the interaction resource. In this study,we research interaction of turning pages each other when they decide the order of the restaurant. Using a virtual menu with 6 pages, 2 participants in the experiment decided to take one dish for each one for each page. Focusing on when and how the partici-pants turn each page, we found that both participants touch or follow the page when it was turned in 64/135 cases. The timing of the turning is organized not only by their utterance of announcing their order but also the body movement of page manipulation. They used the spatio-temporal pattern of page manipulation such as moving their hand from the center to the edge of the page or lifting the edge of the page slightly. These pre-sequences of turning pages, which were step by step process of sequential move-ments with pauses and were embodied with material world of the page structure, seem to project the next movement of page manipulation to prepare the simultaneous page turning by the participants.

Rituximab treatment may cause or exacerbate Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated multicentric Castleman's disease. Despite the widespread use of rituximab, rituximab-induced KS has not yet been reported in HIV-negative patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We herein report a case of KS that developed after undergoing rituximab-containing chemotherapy in an HIV-negative patient with DLBCL. An 84-year-old man who received rituximab-containing chemotherapy for the treatment of DLBCL developed severe infection, and subsequently KS. Our observations indicate that serious infections under rituximab treatment may trigger KS. KS should therefore be considered when skin tumors appear in lymphoma patients receiving rituximab-containing chemotherapy.
