A numerical analysis of a piston motion in a free piston driver has been conducted including a diaphragm rupture. Quasi-one-dimensional flow is assumed in the driver. Various losses, which are generated in a compression process, are simplified. A process of the diaphragm rupture is assumed by Outa’s model. Experiments are also conducted by using a free piston shock tunnel. Calculated pressure histories show excellent agreements with experimental results. The numerical analysis shows that the piston motion is strongly affected by the diaphragm rupture. Especially, pressure histories in front of the piston change significantly with compact compression tubes. Diaphragm opening time is necessary to be considered to increase test time and to obtain soft landing conditions in compact free piston drivers.

We evaluated diurnal variation and hyperferritinemia as factors that influence the values of serum iron concentration in dogs, using the International Committee for Standardization in Hematology (ICSH) colorimetric method. Serum iron levels were significantly higher in the morning than in the evening in 6 clinically healthy beagle dogs, and the maximum decrease in serum iron concentration was 47.3%. Moreover, the change in serum iron concentrations in 22 clinical canine cases with various serum ferritin levels were evaluated by immunoprecipitation of ferritin. The rate of decline in the serum iron concentrations positively correlated with serum ferritin levels (r=0.48, P=0.024). These results show that it is necessary to consider the sampling time and serum ferritin level for accurate interpretation of serum iron concentrations in dogs.

Hemoprotozoan infections often cause serious production losses in livestock. In the present study, we conducted a PCR-based survey of Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Theileria annulata, Theileria orientalis, Trypanosoma evansi and Trypanosoma theileri, using 423 DNA samples extracted from blood samples of cattle (n=202), water buffaloes (n=43), sheep (n=51) and goats (n=127) bred in the Hue and Hanoi provinces of Vietnam. With the exception of T. annulata and T. evansi, all other parasite species (B. bovis, B. bigemina, T. orientalis and T. theileri) were detected in the cattle populations, with B. bovis being the most common among them. Additionally, four water buffaloes and a single goat were infected with B. bovis and B. bigemina, respectively. The Hue province had more hemoprotozoan-positive animals than those from the Hanoi region. In the phylogenetic analyses, B. bovis-MSA-2b, B. bigemina-AMA-1 and T. theileri-CATL gene sequences were dispersed across four, one and three different clades in the respective phylograms. This is the first study in which the presence of Babesia, Theileria, and Trypanosoma parasites was simultaneously investigated by PCR in Vietnam. The findings suggest that hemoprotozoan parasites, some of which are genetically diverse, continue to be a threat to the livestock industry in this country.

In order to establish a basis for distinguishing normal and abnormal structures, this paper reports on the growth of vertebral centra in the cyprinid fish, Zacco platypus Temminck et Schlegel.Specimens, 10.0-110.0 mm in standard length (SL), were collected from the Yahagi River, Aichi Prefecture, in August, 1978.Juvenile fish were collected from the Ibi River, Gifu Prefecture in October 1978 and in April 1979.Length and diameter of centra of the 263 specimens were measured for different growth stages, seasons and sexes.Ossification of vertebrae begins in the postlarval stage, at about 8.0 mm SL.In fish smaller than 16.0 mm SL, all centra are almost equal in length.At 24.0-26.0 mm SL, lengths of centra located at the anterior part of the caudal region are longer than those in the other regions.As the fish grow, growth rate becomes greater in the middle part of the column than the other regions.The diameters of centra in fish of 10.0-16.0 mm SL show no difference associated with the portion of centra through the vertebral column.In fish larger than 24.0 mm SL the diameter of centra located at the anterior part of the column and around the transitional area between the abdominal and caudal region is larger than those in the other regions.In the adult stage, there are no sexual differences in the length and the diameter of centra.The proportions of vertebral column length to standard length in specimens of 10.0-16.0 mm SL are significantly smaller than those in specimens above 24.0 mm SL.And, there are significant differences on the ratios of total length of centra to column length between the three size-groups, 10.0-11.0 mm SL, 15.0-26.0 mm SL and above 60.0 mm SL (t-test, P<0.001).The lengths of centra in juvenile fish (15.0-16.0 mm SL, 19.0-20.0 mm SL) collected in April are larger than those in October and August, but the diameters of centra in the former are smaller than those in the latter two months.There is no difference in the length and the diameter of centra between juvenile fish in August and those in October.The ratios of spinal column length to standard length of juvenile fish in April are significantly larger than those in August and in October (t-test, P<0.001).

水腫, 脚気, 解毒の改善に用いられるアズキ (生薬名: 赤小豆, セキショウズ) 煮汁の成分を明らかにする目的でアズキ熱水抽出物の成分研究を行った。その結果, フラボノイドならびにその配糖体13種を単離し, 構造を明らかにした。次いでアズキ熱水抽出物およびこれから得られたフラボノイド誘導体についてDPPH法によるラジカル消去活性を測定した。その結果, いずれも代表的な抗酸化物質であるBHAに匹敵する強い抗酸化作用を示した。

This study evaluated recent changes in the annual incidence of childhood type 2 diabetes in the Tokyo metropolitan area. From 1974 to 2004, a total of 236 students were diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes by the urine glucose screening program at school. The overall incidence of type 2 diabetes was 2.55/100,000. Overall, 83.9% of students with diabetes were obese; junior high school students had a significantly higher incidence than primary school students (0.75 vs. 6.27/100,000). The annual incidences over the 5-yr periods from 1974-2004 were 1.73, 3.23, 3.05, 2.90, 2.70 and 1.41/100,000, respectively. The incidences in 1974-1980 and 2001-2004 were significantly lower than those in 1981-1985, 1986-1990 and 1991-1995, because primary school students in 1974-1980 had a significantly lower incidence (0.27/100,000), and junior high school students in 2001-2004 had a somewhat lower incidence (3.66/100,000) than during 1981-2000. In recent years, Japanese children's lifestyle and eating habits have gradually improved, and this may have contributed to the trend toward decrease in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in 2001-2004 in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

健康食品,新五浄心の長期摂取により偽性アルドステロン症をきたした高齢者の1例を経験した. 症例は67歳の男性.高血圧症,脂質異常症,高尿酸血症に対し近医にて内服加療中であった.2007年4月に低カリウム血症(3.0 mEq/l),下腿浮腫が出現したため,スピロノラクトン,L-アスパラギン酸カリウム内服を開始するも,血清カリウムは低値(2.8~3.2 mEq/l)で推移した.その後,動悸,こむら返りも頻繁に出現するようになり,2009年12月低カリウム血症の精査目的に当科紹介となった.当科受診時の血清カリウム2.4 mEq/l,血漿レニン活性0.1 ng/ml/hr以下,血中アルドステロン濃度34 pg/mlと低下を認めた.外来における病歴聴取では甘草,グリチルリチンを含有する医薬品の摂取歴はなく,偽性アルドステロン症が疑われ,精査目的に2010年2月当科に入院となった.入院時の詳細な病歴聴取により2007年2月より健康食品である新五浄心を摂取していることが判明した.入院後,新五浄心を中止し,カリウム製剤の補充を継続したところ,低カリウム血症は改善し,カリウム製剤補充も中止した.精査の結果,他に偽性アルドステロン症をきたす疾患は否定的であり,新五浄心による,偽性アルドステロン症と考えられた.これまで新五浄心による偽性アルドステロン症の報告はない.さらに高齢者の偽性アルドステロン症では,甘草,グリチルリチンを含有する医薬品だけではなく,一般市販薬,健康食品を含めた詳細な服薬歴の問診も大切であると思われ報告する.

本稿の目的は, 革命や観光地化を経た近年のザンジバル島がどのような文化変容を経験しているか, その動態を描き出すことである。ザンジバル島は19世紀に中継交易港として栄え, アラビア半島やインド亜大陸からの多くの移民により「ストーンタウン」が形成された。この町の建築には, 当時の豊かな商人や貴族によって豪奢な木彫ドアが取り付けられた。しかし1964年に勃発したザンジバル革命によって島の社会構造や民族構成は大きく変化し, 豊かな住民や職人が島外へ流出するとともにドア製作の伝統も衰退したとされる。だがその後の政府の尽力などにより, 現在では製作は復活し, 新たな世代の職人も生まれている。このような背景を踏まえ, ザンジバル革命前のドアと, 革命後のドアとのデザイン面での変化とその要因を, 残されたドアの調査と職人への聞き取りから考察した。この研究から明らかになったのは, 第一に, アラブ・インドからの影響下で生成されたストーンタウンの文化と, より「アフリカ的」であるとされる郊外の文化とのダイナミックな相互交流のプロセスであり, 第二に, 現在のドア職人によってアラブ・インド・アフリカなどの各文化要素が自由に取捨選択され, 融合され, 新たな文化が生み出されつつある胎動であった。

本研究では,ゼオライト系吸着材を用いて,吸着器と蒸発/凝縮器を同一の容器に収納した一体型吸着式ヒートポンプユニットの評価を行った.蒸発/凝縮温度293 K,吸着温度303 K,脱着温度363 K,切り替え時間150 sの条件において,理論出力4.35 kW,COP 1.64に対して,今回試作した一体型吸着式ヒートポンプユニットでは出力3.27 kW,COP 1.37を得た.サイクル切り替え直後は熱交換器や吸着材などの顕熱による加熱が支配的となり,吸着熱や凝縮熱の生成速度が遅いため,切り替え時間を短くするとCOPが小さくなった.外気温が下がると蒸発性能が低下し,給水温度が高くなると吸着温度の上昇に伴って吸着量が減少するため,COPや出力が低下した.

71歳,男性。40年来熱帯魚屋を経営している。約4ヵ月前より右手背の紅斑に気づき,ステロイド外用剤で加療するも軽快せず当科を受診した。初診時,右手背に24×20mmの暗紅色の扁平に隆起した浸潤性紅斑を認めた。病理組織所見では非乾酪壊死性類上皮細胞性肉芽腫像を示した。組織のZiehl Neelsen染色では抗酸菌は陰性だったが,組織片の塗抹標本では全視野で1~4個の抗酸菌を認めた。組織片の培養(小川培地)では表面が淡いクリーム状のコロニーを認め,生化学的性状より本菌をMycobacterium(以下M.)marinumと同定した。さらに分離培養株を対象にPCRおよびダイレクトシークエンス解析を行いM. marinumと確定した。塩酸ミノサイクリン 200mg/日の内服で8週間後に瘢痕治癒した。

熊本県では,馬刺しを共通食とする原因不明の一過性嘔吐下痢症事例が最近3年間で毎年27件以上発生していた.同事例の原因はSarcocystis fayeri住肉胞子虫で,本研究では一定時間の冷凍処理で住肉胞子虫のシストがペプシンにより消化されその毒性を失うことを見いだした.同胞子虫シストを含んだ馬肉を-20℃で48時間以上冷凍したところ,シスト由来の毒性タンパク質の消失も確認された.本研究で確立した冷凍条件を用いての冷凍処理の普及により,平成23年10月以降,馬刺しが原因と考えられる食中毒の発生報告はなく,この冷凍処理基準が,馬刺しによる食中毒防止対策として有効であることが示唆された.
