Against a backdrop of growing concern over democratic decline, many scholars have debated whether democracy has been in a global recession for the past decade or so. Based on two major democracy indices, this article presents how political regimes in Asian countries have changed since the mid-2000s—the period when, according to its proponents, a global democratic recession started. Both the Freedom House and Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) measures suggest that the Asian countries that have lower scores now than in 2005 are mostly emerging democracies, but that there is no clear pattern of democratic decline across the region since the mid-2000s. Notably, there was a significant gap between the two indices for some countries, including the Philippines and India, both of which are featured in the current issue of this journal. This seems quite natural, given the different methodologies adopted by the indices to measure democracy. I conclude that country case studies are critical for assessing the extent to which democracy indices can capture the political reality of each country and for determining which index is more sensible than others.

大学における教育では目標設定型の教育が求められている。そこにおいて重要なのは設定された目標に基づいて、どのように評価を行うのかである。そして教学マネジメントにおいては、それを全学的にどのように進めていくのかが課題であるが、米国でのInstitutional Effectivenessを参考に、定期的なプログラムレヴューとそれに基づいた改善計画を提出させる仕組みの構築が重要であることが分かった。

Computer-mediated Communication made it possible to bring an authentic environment of using a second language learners' target language in their classroom. It is also true that there are many opportunities to interact not only with native speakers (like ALTs) but also with their classmates who are also learning the same target language. The present research focused on an English writing activity, which was assigned to 130 sophomore students at Nagaoka National College of Technology (NNCT) during the summer vacation in 2005. 33 of them chose to do it on their blog site through the Internet so that their classmates were able to check what they were doing and, hopefully, interact with each other during their summer vacation. A survey was carried out among those 33 students about the assignment. Most of them were able to build up their confidence for what they have done, increase the chance of using dictionaries, and enjoy writing on their blog sites. However, the result did not show that this activity would strengthen the relationship among the participants.

Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is one of the most promising propellant for near future space transportation rocket engine because of its low cost and fewer handling concerns. However, for LNG propellant, erosion of engine material by sulfur (sulfur attack) and coking by LNG pyrolysis are significant problems in a regenerative cooling passage. In this study, the effects of sulfur attack and coking are experimentally evaluated for material candidates such as Inconel600, SUS316, Hastelloy-X, and some copper alloys. In the sulfur attack tests, EPMA and Raman analysis indicate that metallic sulfide can be observed only on the surface and XRD analysis indicates that sulfur attack are hardly recognized for all of material in the test conditions. In coking tests, it is clear that coking of methane with 5% propane can proceed more than those of pure methane. The thermal decomposition temperature is significantly decreased by catalytic effects of Ni in engine material. The results of coking tests will be included in the design criteria of combustion chamber, nozzle of the LNG rocket engines.

緩和的放射線治療は,適切に施行することで患者のQuality of Life(QOL)向上に寄与する.緩和的放射線治療の有用性の認知は進んできてはいるが,在宅医療機関からの緩和的放射線治療のニーズはまだ満たされていない.在宅療養中の患者が緩和的放射線治療を受けることでQOLが向上することはあるが,画像診断検査を行うことが難しい在宅診療の現場では,緩和的放射線治療の適応を判断することは困難である.また,在宅療養中の患者は全身状態が悪いことが多く,頻回の通院は難しいうえにその移動手段にも制限がある.そのような環境の中,われわれは在宅診療所と協力し,緩和的放射線治療を提供する活動を行ってきたので一部の症例とともに報告する.

人身事故のような長時間の運休が生じる障害が発生した場合、その影響は障害の発生した路線だけではなく、直通運転を行っている他の路線にまで波及していく。また、十数分間の遅れが列車に生じた場合、列車の連絡関係によって前後の列車にも遅れが発生する。本研究では、ダイヤ・列車接続情報と障害情報をもとに、障害による影響や影響範囲をシミュレートし、運転再開時刻・遅延時間・正常なダイヤに回復するまでの時間といった障害特性を鉄道利用者に提供する。また、全ての駅に同じ情報を送るのではなく、路線を複数の区間に区切ってそれぞれの区間に最適な障害特性を配信することで、その駅に適した振替輸送や遅延時間の案内を行う。

Nishinoshima is an andesitic stratovolcano located in Ogasawara Islands, Japan. In November 2013, island-forming eruption started. Before the eruption, Nishinoshima was a small island of the area of 0.29 km2 and elevation of 25 m but it had a huge edifice rising 3,000 m from the sea floor. By March 2016, area and elevation reached 2.7 km2 and 140 m, respectively. We conducted various types of geophysical observations at this “difficult-to-access island” (950 km from Tokyo taking 90 min by Jet plane, or 24 h by ship). In June 2016, we conducted airborne observations using unmanned helicopter, collecting 250 grams of scoria and detailed 4K images of lava flows. OBSs (Ocean Bottom Seismometers) were deployed around Nishinoshima in four periods. From February 2015 to May 2017, characteristic waveforms dominated at 4–8 Hz band were frequently observed. Comparisons with infrasonic records and video images revealed that the 4–8 Hz seismic signals were associated with eruptions at pyroclastic cone. The number of seismic signals of this type declined from July 2015, and disappeared in November 2015, suggesting that the eruptive activity started declining in July 2015 and ceased in the middle of November 2015. In October 2016, we landed and deployed a broadband seismometer and an infrasonic sensor in the old Nishinoshima, collecting a lot of new lava, deposits, and ash samples. We demonstrated a capacity of remote-island volcano monitoring system for one day test navigation circling around Nishinoshima. After one and a half year quiescence, a new eruptive phase started in April, 2017. Our on-land seismic sensor detected precursory signals as early as April 17. The seismometer also recorded characteristic waveforms during the very early stage of the new eruption phase before data transmission was terminated on April 21.

低位鎖肛を合併したhuman tailの1例を経験した.妊娠経過に異常は指摘されなかった,在胎40週5日,自然分娩にて出生の女児で,出生体重3,060gであった.出生時より腕前底部に肛門痩を認める低位鎖肛および仙尾部腫瘤を認めた.腫瘤は臀部正中背側に存在し5×3×2cm大と1cm大の結節が雪だるま状を呈していた.腕前底部には肛門瘻を認めた.洗腸にて排便コントロールをはかり,生後4ヵ月時,仙尾部腫瘤切除術と仙骨会陰式肛門形成術を施行した.腫瘤は脂肪組織のみで構成されhuman tailと考えられた.本症例は,human tailを合併していたため低位鎖肛にたいし仙骨会陰式肛門形成術を施行し良好な結果を得た.human tailでは脊髄や肛門の合併奇形を伴う可能性が大きく術前の詳細な検討が必要と思われる.

本稿では,フロンティア法による,与えられたグラフ上の特定の制約を満たす部分グラフ抽出の具体的応用例として,ナンバーリンクとスリザーリンクと呼ばれるパズルそれぞれのための解答器と問題生成器のアルゴリズムを提案し,実験結果を報告する.また,この技術を用いたスリザーリンクの問題作成支援についても議論する.

This study examines the receptive vocabulary size of Japanese EFL learners of the ages from 16 to 19, and describes characteristics and differences according to their school year, overall English ability, and whole vocabulary size. The results showed that the average vocabulary sizes of students of the first, second and third years in a college of technology are about 2370, 2612, and 3417 words. It showed also that the average vocabulary size of the third graders is comparable to that of well-motivated students of a public high school, and that there is no statistically significant difference in the annual increase in the vocabulary size between the learners whose overall English skill is low and those who are at a higher level.
