<p>Electrochemical hydrogen permeation tests were carried out under controlled temperature and humidity using pure Fe sheet specimens outdoor-exposed at Beijing and Chongqing, China and Okinawa, Japan in order to understand the effect of environmental factors on hydrogen uptake behavior. The maximum hydrogen permeation current densities of the exposed specimens were in the order of Beijing > Chongqing >> Okinawa, while the order of the degree of corrosion of the specimens was Okinawa > Chongqing >> Beijing. X-ray fluorescence analysis showed that the surface concentrations of sulfur on the Beijing- and Chongqing-exposed specimens were higher than that of the Okinawa-exposed specimens, whereas chlorine concentrations of the Beijing and Okinawa-exposed specimens were higher than that of the Chongqing-exposed specimen. Nitrate concentrations of Beijing- and Chongqing-exposed specimens evaluated using nitrate test strips were obviously higher than that of the Okinawa-exposed specimens. It is suggested that air pollutants such as SO₂ and NO₂ and particulate matters containing inorganic acid ions, likely sulfate and nitrate ions, and possibly organic acids contribute to acidification of rust layer leading to the enhanced hydrogen entry.</p>

<p>Compensatory hypertrophy of the lingual tonsil can develop after extraction of the palatine tonsil, causing dyspnea and a feeling of suffocation. Sometimes, such patients present with physical airway obstruction, and in some cases, surgical treatment is warranted for the enlarged lingual tonsil. Our patient reported herein presented with inspiratory dyspnea caused by compensatory hypertrophy of the lingual tonsil 20 years after she had undergone enucleation of the palatine tonsil passed after palatine tonsil. We performed extraction of the lingual tonsil using an FK-WO retractor and obtained good results. We present the case herein.</p><p>The patient was a 54-year-old woman who presented to our department with the chief complaint of dysphagia, mild dyspnea and dysphonia. The patient had undergone bilateral palatine tonsil enucleation as treatment for sleep apnea syndrome 20 years earlier. The endoscopic findings at the initial diagnosis consisted of a markedly enlarged lingual tonsil with constriction of the pharyngeal cavity at the site. Moreover, a portion of the enlarged tonsil hung down like a pendulum and invaginated into the glottis during inspiration. The patient was diagnosed as having airway stenosis due to compensatory hypertrophy of the lingual tonsil. Because of the difficulty in intubation caused by the enlarged lingual tonsil, we undertook airway maintenance by tracheotomy and induced general anesthesia of the patient. Then, we carried out resection of the enlarged tonsil by Transoral Video-Laryngoscopic Surgery (TOVS) using the FK-WO retractor. We also resected a portion of the epiglottis, because the transformed epiglottis has already become useless. At present, one year since the surgery, there has been no recurrence of the symptoms and the airway continues to be maintained well too.</p><p>There have been no other case reports of inspiratory airway obstruction caused by hanging down into the airway, like a pendulum, of a part of an enlarged lingual tonsil.</p>

<p>Two α-L-arabinofuranosidase genes classified in Glycoside Hydrolase (GH) family 51 from the basidiomycetes Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Flammulina velutipes were cloned, and the recombinant enzymes expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris were characterized. When p-nitrophenyl-α-L-arabinofuranoside was used as a substrate, two enzymes showed acidic pH optima at pH 3. The two enzymes released L-arabinose from rye arabinoxylan, wheat arabinoxylan, sugar beet arabinan and debranched arabinan, but not from arabinogalactan.</p>

<p> 我が国5海域における珪藻<i>Skeletonema</i>属の種組成を,遺伝子解析(LSU rDNA D1-D3)と微細形態の特徴から種を同定し,明らかにした。亜熱帯域の沖縄海域では<i>S. grevillei</i>,温帯域の有明海,富山湾,女川湾および亜寒帯域の噴火湾では<i>S. dohrnii</i>が優占し,<i>S. japonicum</i>が混在した。高水温期に塩分の低かった有明海や富山湾では<i>S. costatum</i>が,塩分30以上の女川湾や噴火湾では順に<i>S. grevillei</i>と<i>S. pseudocostatum</i>が出現した。</p>

ブナ分布北限地域の最前線における正確な分布を調べるために、空中写真解析と現地調査を併用した結果、ブナの孤立林は最大約4km間隔で9箇所分布していることが判明した。これらの孤立林は、ブナの連続分布域から鳥などによって運ばれた種子が育ち、成立した可能性がある。遺伝的解析の結果、孤立ブナ林では孤立度が高く、多様度は低下する傾向がみられたものの、ブナの樹齢は120年以下の若い個体が多く、ブナは林冠のかく乱などを契機として今後もゆっくりと分布範囲を拡大すると考えられた。
