The goddess Ashtart is mentioned several times in the Ugaritic texts, but appears relatively rarely in the mythological texts. A. Caquot and M. Sznycer say that at Ugarit, Asthtart was a “colourless deity”. On the other side, “the singer of Ashtart” (šr. ‘ṯtrt), whom We can find in the administrative text (KTU2 4.168: 4) , is very unique in the ancient Near East. Why does the “colorless deity” in the mythological texts need her professional singer?We can find the entry ritual of Ashtart in several ritual texts (KTU2 1.43: 1-2 ; 1.91: 10; 1.148: 18). The goddess’s entry into the royal palace suggests the royal attention paid to her. It appears likely, from a comparison of the Ugaritic texts with the Mari evidence, that the entry ritual of Ashtart is a kind of kispu-festival. We can see that Ashtart is invoked in some incantational texts related to vanquishing venomous serpents (KTU2 1.100; 19b—20a; 1.107; 39b—40a).The Keret epic (KTU2 1.14: III: 41-42 ; VI: 26-28) and a mythical text (KTU2 1.92) show that Ashtart is beautiful but powerful, and she is a good skilled huntress. The Baal myth (KTU2 1.2: IV: 28-30) and a song to Ashtart (RIH 98/02) indicate that Ashtart has the overwhelming power to subdue hostile forces. We can also see that Ashtart is called together with the god Horon in the king Keret’s curse (KTU2 1.16: VI: 54-57).Ashtart is the protective goddess to kings of Ugarit, because of her power of breaking enemies. Ashtart is important for the protection of Ugaritic kings against their hostile forces. Because of her physical and magical power, the singer of Ashtart might be necessary for the rituals related to the protection of Ugaritic kings against their enemies and fears.

As a new strategy for drug discovery and development, we propose here the establishment of drug re-profiling strategy. In this strategy, the actions of existing medicines, whose safety and pharmacokinetic effects in humans have been confirmed already, are examined comprehensively at the molecular level and the results are used for the development of new medicines. For example, identification of the mechanisms underlying the side effects of medicines enables us to develop safer drugs. The results can also be used for developing existing drugs for use as medicines in treatment of other diseases. Promoting this research strategy could provide breakthroughs in drug discovery and development by pharmaceutical companies.

The authors studied the feasibility of utilizing ebonite as a personal neutron dosemeter in criticality accidents. A disc-shaped ebonite, a hard rubber containing 30wt% sulfur, can be used as a highly effective criticality neutron dosemeter because of a simplicity of measurements of beta activity arising from 32S(n, p)32P reactions. The counting efficiency of beta particles with an end-window GM counter for an ebonite disc in 50mm diameter and 3mm thick was determined by 252Cf neutron irradiation. The neutron spectrum dependency of 32P activity per neutron dose was computed using Monte-Carlo calculations of various neutron spectra that could be encountered in criticality accidents, and the results were tabulated as a set of spectrum correction factors. Performance tests using the SILENE reactor indicated that neutron doses could be evaluated within ±15% with the application of suitable correction factors.

[Purpose] To estimate the effect of Klapp method on idiopathic scoliosis in school students. [Subjects and Methods] A single-blind randomized clinical trial with 22 students randomly divided into intervention group (n=12) and inactive control group (n=10). Exercise protocol consisted of Klapp method, 20 sessions, three times a week for intervention group, and inactivity for control group. Dorsal muscle strength was measured by dynamometer; body asymmetries and gibbosity angles were measured by biophotogrammetry. Data were obtained by Generalized Estimated Equation, with 5% significance level. Clinical impact for dependent variables was estimated by “d” Cohen. [Results] There was no change in intragroup analysis and intergroup for all postural symmetry variables. However, it was detected intergroup difference in extensor muscle strength and intergroup difference with marginal significance of gibbosity angles. Regarding extensor muscle strength, intervention group produced average improvement of 7.0 kgf compared to control group. Gibbosity angles progressed less in intervention group, with 5.71° average delay compared to control group. [Conclusion] Klapp method was effective for gibbosity stabilization and it improves spine extensor muscle strength.

最近, 100nm以下の解像(16ギガDRAM相当)を実現するF2エキシマレーザー光 (157nm) を光源とする半導体の光リソグラフィーに大きな関心が集まりつつある. “modifiedsllica”とよばれるフッ素をドープした無水シリカガラスが優れたF2レーザー耐性を示すことがわかり,これまであきらめられていたフォトマスク基板としての可能性が示されたことが一つの契機となった.F2レーザー光と合成シリカガラスとの相互作用の解明は,新たな欠陥種としてひずみボンドの重要性を明らかにしつつある.本稿では,合成シリカガラスとF2レーザーとの相互作用について,筆者らのアプローチと結果について紹介する.

We present the case of a patient who was referred to our hospital after she reported having passed a long, whitish object per rectum. Accordingly, capsule endoscopy was performed using the PillCam® SB video capsule. A tapeworm of the species Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense was detected; it appeared to be freely floating and unfolded in the jejunum and sometimes tangled or irregularly folded in the ileum. The stretching of the strobila by strong peristalsis in the ileum may have resulted in the separation of the caudal portion of the strobila, which descended into the colon and was eventually passed per rectum.

症例は46歳女性。生来健康であったが,2週間ほど前から易疲労感と息切れが出現し,40°C台の発熱とともに著明な倦怠感と立ちくらみを自覚したため来院した。直接・間接クームズテスト陽性,間接ビリルビン上昇,ハプトグロビン低下などの検査所見から,自己免疫性溶血性貧血(autoimmune hemolytic anemia, AIHA)と診断した。プレドニゾロン(1mg/kg)内服およびステロイドパルス療法を施行するも,貧血が遷延したため骨髄穿刺を施行した。網赤血球数が低値であり,著明な赤芽球系細胞の減少と巨大赤芽球を認め,他の血球系には異形成がないことから赤芽球癆(pure red cell aplasia, PRCA)の合併と診断した。発熱のエピソードやパルボウイルスB19 IgM抗体が陽性であることから後天性PRCAが特発性AIHAと同時期に発症した可能性も考えられ,網赤血球数の回復後に高値B19 DNA(109コピー/ml)が検出されたことから,パルボウイルス感染の遷延化が病態の修飾に関与した可能性がある。

In order to clarify the status of clinical skills education in the faculties of pharmaceutical sciences at pharmacy schools in Japan,we carried out a questionnaire survey of such faculties at 74 schools in Japan.The results revealed that 67.9% of the pharmacy schools were providing clinical skills education such as that regarding physical assessment and assessment of vital signs.As for the amount of time spent in education on clinical skills,the median lecture time was 225 minutes and the median practical training time was 540 minutes.The ranking of lecture content was :[1]basic knowledge related to vital signs,[2]basic knowledge related to electrocardiography,[3]basic knowledge related to clinical laboratory test results,[4]pathophysiology and symptomatology and[5]Procedures for using assessment equipment,and the ranking of practical training :[1]primary or secondary emergency medical care,[2] assessment of vital signs,[3]electrocardiography measurements and analysis,[4]auscultation,[5]nursing and patient care.The ranking for equipment available at pharmacy schools was :[1]stethoscope (availability rate 50.9%),[2]mercury sphygmomanometer (41.5%),[3]AED trainer (24.5 %),[4]electrocardiograph (22.6%),[5]pulse oxymeter (20.8%).Based on the results of our survey,it is felt that clinical skills education in pharmaceutical science courses will enhance the professional capabilities of pharmacists,and enable them to make greater contributions in various fields including emergency medical care and home medical care.

バイオセンサーは,生体の化学物質識別能力を利用した化学センサーである.特に酵素,抗体などの特異性を利用すれば,体液中の物質を高い選択性のもとに検出できる.本稿では,はじめにバイオセンサーの基本原理と酵素を使ったバイオセンサーの実用例を述べ,続いて,バイオセンサーの新しい研究勤向である半導体を使った小型化,複合機能化,集積化センサー,およびその他の電子デバイスと結合する試みなどを紹介する.

AMPキナーゼは,真核生物において高度に保存されたセリン/スレオニンキナーゼである。キナーゼ活性が同定されたのは1970年代初期であるが,その生物学的重要性が認識され始めたのは最近になってからである。細胞内のエネルギー・レベルを感知して,低エネルギー環境に適応するための種々の調節を行う。生命活動のイベントの多くは,細胞レベルであっても個体レベルであっても,何らかの形でエネルギー代謝と関連している。そのため,AMPキナーゼが担う役割も単なるエネルギー・センサーに留まるものではなく,細胞の基本的活動(増殖・分化など)から疾患の生起にまでわたる。本稿では,AMPキナーゼの分子構造および機能を解説する。

衣服構成の目的は, 布という単純な面で人体という複雑な面を覆うことである.この目的から考えると, ある面が平面に展開できるかどうかが重要で, それはガウスの曲率で定義することができる.もし面の至る所でガウスの曲率がゼロであれば, 可展面と呼ばれる.このガウスの曲率に関して, 曲面内のガウスの曲率の総和と境界線上の測地的曲率の総和を加えたものは, 2π×オイラー標数と等しいというガウス-ボネの定理がある.本論文では, この定理を衣服構成の立場で議論する.特に, 裁断と縫合という技術はガウスの曲率と測地的曲率の変化と捉えることが出来る.この定理は一種の角度保存則と考えられるので, 角度の配分という考え方を導入することができる.この考え方をより明確にするために, 縫合の前後で各曲率がどの様に変化するかを示し, この関係を縫合の式と呼ぶことにする.角度の配分という考え方と縫合の式は衣服構成にとって有益であると考える.

Because lampreys have been considered to be representative of primitive vertebrates, frequent taxonomic, phylogenetic and speciation studies have been made, both before and since the landmark publication, “The Biology of Lampreys” (-1971-81). Primarily because of their low diversity of morphological features (treated as valid taxonomic characteristics), lampreys have been subject to much taxonomic uncertainty. Nevertheless, current phylogenetic hypotheses, based pri-marily on dentition, have been accepted by many researchers, with only slight modifications, over the last 2-3 decades. However, recent molecular studies of some lamprey groups have demonstrated the potential for a molecular approach to phylogenetic systematics of lampreys and a new basis for evaluation of previously-held hypotheses.Many lamprey genera are composed of several species characterized by different life-styles, such as parasitic, anadromous and nonparasitic, fluvial. The speciation process proposed in previous studies has been broadly divided into the following patterns: nonparasitic, fluvial species have evolved directly from a parasitic, anadromous species; and some nonparasitic, fluvial species have evolved from an intermediate at the parasitic, fluvial stage, rather than directly from a parasitic, anadromous form. In this review, these two processes and the mechanisms by which nonparasitic forms may have evolved, are discussed.As a case study, phylogeny and speciation within the Far East monophyletic genus Lethenteron is considered. Four Lethenteron taxa, L. japonicum, L. kessleri and the northern and southern forms of L. reissneri, should be regarded as discrete species because of the existence of reproductive isolation between all possible pairs of taxa in region of sympatry. In the monophyletic group, comprising the former three species, the nonparasitic fluvial L. kessleri and the northern form of L. reissneri are both thought to have evolved from ancestral stocks of parasitic, anadromous L. japonicum, following the occurrence of precocious dwarf individuals in each an-cestral line.

In 1955, many babies who had drunk arsenic-tainted milk produced at the Tokushima Plant of the Morinaga Milk-Industry Company Ltd., suffered from serious poisoning. The number of victims ascertained in February, 1956 covering 27 prefectures in the western part of Japan was 12, 159, of whom 131 died.The disaster was caused by the process of manufacturing the powdered milk. Disodium phosphate was added as a stabilizer to make the milk easily soluble. This disodium phosphate was poorly purified, intended for non-food industrial use, and contained a toxic dose of arsenic, sodium arsenite and vanadium compounds etc.Shortly after the disaster, numerous medical reports were published. A committee organized by the Society for Child Health (the chairman was Prof. Nishizawa of Osaka University; so it was called the Nishizawa Committee), determined criteria for the diagnosis of the poisoning; but these criteria were inadequate and erroneous from several points of view. Strange to say, debates and publications about the disaster disappeared quickly after the report was published by the Health Department of Okayama Prefecture stating that the victims had recovered completely according to the criteria established by the Nishizawa Committee only one year after the disaster.Until 1969, when Prof. Maruyama et al., of Osaka University reported on victims whom they had visited, no study had been made to ascertain whether or not there were any after-effects of the poisoning. Much fault must be found with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, with the attitude of the Morinaga Company, and with the doctors concerned, for this neglect to follow-up such an unprecedented and large-scale disaster.In 1969, the authors managed to organize an epidemiological study group with several departments of Hiroshima University and the Department of Hygiene of Okayama University cooperating and have developed joint research on this disaster as follows:1. A follow-up survey was made among victims in Okayama Prefecture between December 1969 and April 1970. 214 people answered the questionnaire and 74 were given a medical examination.2. A prospective study was made on the basis of a questionnaire on clnical complaints collected at the time of the disaster in 1955.3. A comparative study was performed between the victims and their brothers and sisters.4. A comparative study was performed among handicapped children in institutions in Okayama Prefecture, who were born between January 1st, 1953 and December 31st, 1955. The children were divided into three groups, namely those who had consumed the arsenic-tainted milk, those who were brought up on different brands of powdered milk from different companies, and those fed only maternal milk.5. A comparative study was performed among all children born between January 1st, 1954 and December 31st, 1955 and brought up in Seno district in Hiroshima Prefecture which has a relatively stationary population and where good records had been kept of the physical growth and mental development of the children in the nursery, primary and junior high schools. The children were divided into the same three groups as mentioned above. This study was performed as a joint research project by the Departments of Public Health (Director: Prof. M. Tanaka), Orthopedics (Director: Prof. K. Tsuge), Ophthalmology (Director: Prof. T. Dodo) and Psychiatry and Neurology (Director: Prof. K. Sarai) of Hiroshima University Medical School and Deparment of Conservative Dentistry (Director: Prof. T. Inoue) of Hiroshima University Dental School, and Department of Hygiene (Director: Prof. M. Ohira) of Okayama University Medical School. All clinical examinations were conducted separately under the double blind method.6. The 124 cases of the children examined in the district of Senogawa town were discussed individually by the six medical doctors and five dentists who did the examinations.
