Delayed wound healing is one of the complications of diabetes mellitus. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of Aloe vera oral administration on open wounds in type 2 diabetic rats. Full thickness open wounds (1.5 × 1.5 cm) were created under general anesthesia on the backs of the rats. These rats were divided into two group, a control group (Group C) and an Aloe vera oral administration group (Group A). Each wound area was measured on days 1, 2, 4 and 8 postwounding. The stages of wound granulation tissues were evaluated histopathologically. The expression of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were determined by immunohistochemically. The wounds were significantly contracted in Group A on days 2, 4 and 8 postwounding. Histological results revealed that the inflammatory cell infiltration, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix deposition and epithelialization were promoted in Group A, respectively. The immunohistochemical results revealed that both TGF-β1 and VEGF protein-positive cells increased in Group A on day 4 postwounding. We concluded that Aloe vera oral administration accelerated wound healing in type 2 diabetic rats.

This paper discusses how to formulate the reliability analysis of an inspected structure to make the best use of the experience, taking into account the uncertain factors in inspection, proof-load test and statistical characteristics of random variables involved. Two typical cases are taken as examples; one in which basic information is avairable for the analysis including detailed output of NDI and another case where simple visual inspection is only source of data. For both cases, Bayesian method is applied. Monte Carlo simulation demonstrates the use of present method.

Pelosia angusta(STAUDINGER)ネズミホソバ(チビホソバ) 北海道東部で多数とれている本種と同種ではあるが,小型でやや黒っぼい♂が隠岐でとれており,これが,長いあいだ正体不明となっていたIlema okiensis MIYAKEの記載と一致するので,本文で異名とした.樺太のP. sachalinensis MATSUMURAは,北海道やアムールの本種とまったく同じである.私はまだ♀を検していない. Tigrioides immaculata (BUTLER)ナガサキムジホソバ 私(1961)はDANIEL (1954)の同定を信じて,本邦南西部の買Tigrioidesをkobayashiiという新種としたが,台湾から記載されたBUTLERの夕イプ標本(♀)の交尾器を検したところ,kobayashliiは異名であることがわかった.伊豆半島以南に産し,屋久島にまで分布している.Tigrioides pallens INOUE リュウキュウムジホソバ(新称) 前種より翅が少し細く,前翅の脈相も異る.交尾器にも大きなちがいがある.沖縄,石垣島,西表島に多産し,前種と分布が重っていない.Miltochrista sauteri STRAND タイワンスジべニコケガ 岸田,1978,月刊むし 90:27, fig. 15,によって図示され,表記の和名が与えられたが,M. orientalis DANIELは異名となる.M. sauteri ab. fuscozonata MATSUMURAは,次の新種で,上に引用した岸田のFigs. 15a-15cがこれに当る.Miltochrista fuscozonata INOUE ソトグロスジべニコケガ(新称) M. striata (BREMER & GREY)スジべニコケガや前種ほど濃厚な赤色でなく,前翅横線が太く,外横線より外にある脈上の暗色線が太く,しばしばゆう合して全体に暗くなっている.本種も前種も台湾にごく普通だが,日本に多いスジべニコケガは台湾から未発見.miltochrista aberrans okinawana MATSUMURA ハガ夕べニコケガ(オキナワべニコケガ) 奄美大島,徳之島,沖縄産は,小型で,鋸歯状の外横線が消えやすいし,前翅中央部が黄色くない.石垣島と西表島のものは,むしろ横線が太く強い傾向がある.琉球の亜種については,更に多くの標本によって調べる必要がある.私(1965)がM. convexa WILEMANアミメべニコケガとして琉球から記録したのは,同定の間違いであった.Neasura melanopyga(HAMPSON) ムモンウスキコケガ 私(1965)がN. hypophaeola HAMPSONとして記録したのは間違い.台湾から記載された本種は,南西諸島に広く分布している.Chamaita ranruna (MATSUMURA)スカシコケガ(ラソルンヒメホソバ) 私(1961)が本州と四国の標本で記載したCh. diaphana INOUEは,台湾の本種とまったく同じである.そのご茨城県鹿島(目下わかっている北限),奄美大島,西表島でとれている.山本, 959,原色昆虫大図鑑 1:101, pl. 60:23,のSchistophleps bipuncta HAMPSONウスバフタスジコケガのうちbは本種の間違い.Hemipsilia coavestis(HAMPSON) キイロコケガ(改称)(フンキホソバ) Nudaria punkikonis MATSUMURAを本文で異名として整理した.台湾の中部山地に多い. Palaeopsis suffusa (HAMPSON) シラキコケガ(改称)(シラキホソバ) Nudaria shirakii MATSUMURAを本文で異名として整理した.本種も台湾の中部山地に多い. Palaeopsis unifascia INOUE ウスバチビコケガ(新称) 日本で発見されたコケガのなかで最も小型.翅は白く半透明で,前翅に褐色の内外横線があり,後者は強く外方に湾曲している.福岡県でとれた1♂は,やや大きく,前翅中央部と後翅の基半を除き,淡黒褐色をしている.そのほか屋久島と口永良部島でとれた少数の個体しか知られていない.Metaemene hampsoni WILEMANアトジロコヤガ(改称)(カレンコウアトジロコケガ) ヒトリガ科コケガ亜科のParasiccia karenkonis MATSUMURAは,ヤガ科コヤガ亜科のもとに同じ台湾から記載された表記の種と同種である.私(1965)はこれを西表島から記録したが,そのご沖縄のも入手した.琉球産は台湾のものより小型だが,検した標本が2つしかないので,亜種の問題は保留したい.本種の前翅にはMetaemeneのような小室がないので,分類上の位置については,更に検討を要する.

A strategy for designing highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters was reported. TADF emitters with donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D)-type structures showed highly efficient TADF because of their small singlet–triplet energy gap and large oscillator strength. An organic light-emitting diode containing a D–A–D-type TADF emitter, cis-BOX2, exhibited a high external electroluminescence quantum efficiency of 17.6%.

In this study, we investigated how the temporal envelopes contribute to the recognition of isolated syllables, words, and sentences in noise-vocoded speech, under comparison with the influence of spectral resolution. The spectral and temporal resolutions of speech materials were systematically manipulated by a noise-vocoding technique. Japanese monomoraic syllables, meaningful and meaningless words, and sentences were used as test speech materials. The original speech sound was spectrally separated by a filter bank, and each spectral band was replaced with band noise, preserving its original temporal envelope. Spectral resolution was controlled by varying the number of spectral bands as 4, 8, or 16 bands. Temporal resolution was altered by smoothing the amplitude envelope using a low-pass filter with cut-off frequencies at 4, 8, or 16 Hz. Results demonstrated an increased dependence on temporal resolution in comparison with spectral resolution for the recognition of speech materials at higher structural levels (i.e., monosyllables, words, and sentences). This increased temporal dependence suggests that the temporal envelope in noise-vocoded sentences contained a greater amount of suprasegmental information, such as coarticulations, prosodies, and rhythms, in the original speech sound.

Background:The incidence rate of ischemic stroke in Japanese non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients without anticoagulation therapy remains unclear.Methods and Results:We performed a pooled analysis of 3,588 patients from the Shinken Database (n=1,099), J-RHYTHM Registry (n=1,002), and Fushimi AF Registry (n=1,487) to determine the incidence rate of ischemic stroke in Japanese NVAF patients without anticoagulation therapy. Average patient age was 68.1 years. During the follow-up period (total, 5,188 person-years; average, 1.4 years), 69 patients suffered from ischemic stroke (13.3 per 1,000 person-years; 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 10.5–16.8). The incidence rates of ischemic stroke were 5.4, 9.3, and 24.7 per 1,000 person-years and 5.3, 5.5, and 18.4 per 1,000 person-years in patients with low (0), intermediate (1), and high (≥2) CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores, respectively. History of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (hazard ratio [HR], 3.25; 95% CI: 1.86–5.67), age ≥75 years (HR, 2.31; 95% CI: 1.18–4.52), and hypertension (HR, 1.69; 95% CI: 1.01–2.86) were independent risk factors for ischemic stroke.Conclusions:A low incidence rate of ischemic stroke was observed in Japanese NVAF patients except for those with CHADS2 score ≥2. In this pooled analysis, history of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, advanced age, and hypertension were identified as independent risk factors for ischemic stroke. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength and durability of 4-META/MMA-TBB resin to human enamel. A self-etching primer that contained 4-META (Teeth Primer, TP) and 35–45% or 60–65% concentrations of phosphoric acid (K-Etchant Gel, KE, and Super Bond C&B Red Activator, RA) were used as the surface treatment agents. A methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based self-polymerizing resin (Super-Bond C&B) was used as a luting agent. The shear bond strength was determined both pre and post thermocycling. The results were statistically analyzed with a non-parametric procedure. The post-thermocycling shear bond strength of the TP group was significantly higher than that of other groups, and that of the KE group was significantly higher compared with the RA group. These results demonstrated that 4-META was effective. Furthermore, when the degree of tooth demineralization was compared, surface treatment with less demineralization using TP was the most effective treatment.

Aim of this study was to develop a novel fluorapatite-forming calcium phosphate cement (FA-CPC) with tricalcium silicate (TCS) for endodontic applications and to examine its in vitro and in vivo characteristics. The FA-CPC powder consisted of 62.8% CaHPO4, 30.8% CaCO3, and 6.4% NaF. One part of TCS was combined with 9 parts of FA-CPC powder (FA-CPC with TCS). A 1.5 M phosphate solution was used as cement liquid. Setting time (ST), diametral tensile strength (DTS), phase composition by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and cement alkalinity were analyzed. Cement biocompatibility was assessed using rat subcutaneous model. Cement ST was 10.3±0.6 min and DTS was 3.89±0.76 MPa. XRD patterns showed that highly crystalline apatitic material was the only significant phase present and pH value was approximate 11.0. FA-CPC with TCS demonstrated similar biocompatibility as that of mineral trioxide aggregate control. These results suggest that FA-CPC with TCS may be useful for endodontic applications.

In order to investigate any role of minerals in autistic disorders, we measured 24 mineral contents in scalp hair samples of 360 autistic children and compared with those of healthy controls. In the male autistic group aged 4-9 years (N=200), the geometric means of many element levels, namely not only essential minerals such as cobalt, chromium, iodine, molybdenum and phosphorus, but also nickel, boron, cadmium and lead were significantly lower than those in the control group (p<0.001). In contrast, selenium level was significantly higher in the autistic group. On the mercury levels, no significant difference was observed between the two groups, though with a tendency of low concentration in the autistic group. Similar mineral imbalance profiles with a global mineral deficiency were observed in the other autistic groups aged 0-3 and 10-15 years (N=85 and 20) and also in the female autistic groups. In addition, high accumulation of a few elements such as iron, manganese, chromium, copper, sodium, aluminum, cadmium, lead, or mercury was observed in some autistic individuals. These findings indicate that autistic children are suffered from a global mineral deficiency in various trace elements, with some individuals being exposed to a marked accumulation of several elements. Autistic children may be classified to sub-groups, based on their mineral imbalance profile in hair.

Objective Warfarin is known to interact with many drugs; however, there are currently no descriptions of an interaction with linezolid in the literature. It was recently brought to our attention, however, that several warfarin-medicated patients have experienced an increase in the prothrombin time international normalized ratio (PT-INR) following the administration of linezolid. We therefore performed a retrospective survey in order to investigate the possibility of an interaction between warfarin and linezolid. Methods The survey items included age, gender, underlying disease, type of surgery, type of infectious disease, duration of linezolid administration, laboratory values and the dose of warfarin. The PT-INR was observed over time before treatment and at days 4 or 5 and 10, completion and one week after the end of concomitant therapy. Patients The subjects included six patients who were recovering from recent heart-related surgery. Results The PT-INR increased from 1.62±0.32 before concomitant linezolid administration to 3.00±0.83 at day 4 or 5 after concomitant administration (p<0.01) and significantly decreased from 1.65±0.45 at the completion of the regimen to 1.26±0.1 one week later (p<0.05). With respect to the relationship between the dose of warfarin and the PT-INR in five cases, the PT-INR increased following concomitant linezolid treatment in all cases. Conclusion Although it has been reported that linezolid does not influence the metabolism or protein binding of warfarin, our data showed potential drug interactions between warfarin and linezolid. Our data suggest that PT-INR monitoring after the completion of concomitant warfarin and linezolid therapy is important.

The thinning of flowers or fruit is an essential part of the commercial production of quality apples. Although chemical thinners are generally used in apple orchards throughout the world, hand-thinning remains essential for controlling crop load to improve fruit quality and return bloom. The objectives of this study were to investigate factors that determine the time required for hand-thinning and to elucidate cultivar-related efficiency of hand-thinning. In all cultivars, the time taken for hand-thinning per cluster became shorter after petal fall, but the degree of this decrease differed among cultivars. The time taken for hand-thinning depended on both how much and when natural abscission of fruitlets occurred. The times required for hand-thinning were very similar among clusters with four, five, or six flowers/fruitlets, which was twice as long as that required for clusters with two or three flowers/fruitlets. This means that the time required for hand-thinning clusters is critically reduced when the number of flowers/fruitlets within a cluster is three or fewer. The time required for hand-thinning clusters of axillary buds became significantly longer from bloom to 7 days after bloom, and then decreased gradually from 7 to 25 days after bloom. When the proportion of clusters with three or fewer fruitlets is 50% at 15 days after bloom, the planting area of the cultivar that a person is able to hand-thin (six hours per day) from 10 to 30 days after bloom was 24.3 a, which was 40% larger than that of a cultivar in which the proportion of clusters with three or fewer fruitlets is 50% at 30 days after bloom (17.4 a). Therefore, the introduction of cultivars in which fruit abscission occurs at an early stage and on a large scale is a solution for reducing the labor costs of hand-thinning.

Background:Recently, a non-invasive method using computational fluid dynamics to calculate vessel-specific fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) from routinely acquired coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) was described. The Analysis of Coronary Blood Flow Using CT Angiography: Next Steps (NXT) trial, which was a prospective, multicenter trial including 254 patients with suspected coronary artery disease, noted high diagnostic performance of FFRCTcompared with invasive FFR. The aim of this post-hoc analysis was to assess the diagnostic performance of non-invasive FFRCTvs. standard stenosis quantification on coronary CTA in the Japanese subset of the NXT trial.Methods and Results:A total of 57 Japanese participants were included from Okayama University (n=36), Kyoto University (n=17), and Keio University (n=4) Hospitals. Per-patient diagnostic accuracy of FFRCT(74%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 60–85%) was higher than for coronary CTA (47%; 95% CI: 34–61%, P<0.001) arising from improved specificity (63% vs. 27%, P<0.001). FFRCTcorrectly reclassified 53% of patients and 63% of vessels with coronary CTA false positives as true negatives. When patients with Agatston score >1,000 were excluded, per-patient accuracy of FFRCTwas 83% with a high specificity of 76%, similar to the overall NXT trial findings.Conclusions:FFRCThas high diagnostic performance compared with invasive FFR in the Japanese subset of patients in the NXT trial. We examined the effects of chicken egg hydrolysate (also known as "bone peptide" or BP) on bone metabolism in 5- to 8-month-old orchidectomized dogs. The bone formation marker serum bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) and the bone resorption marker urine deoxypyridinoline (DPD) were used as indicators to measure changes in bone metabolism. The following results were observed that Serum BAP was higher in dogs fed BP-enriched food throughout the clinical investigation. Serum BAP was statistically significantly higher in dogs fed BP-enriched food than in dogs fed non-BP-enriched food at 2 months after orchidectomy. This suggests that BP promoted bone formation immediately after orchidectomy.

第30次南極地域観測隊(JARE-30)夏隊のセールロンダーネ山地地学・生物学調査は, 1988年12月29日から1989年2月1日にかけて山地西部で, 2月2日から9日にかけてあすか観測拠点をベースに付近の小山塊で実施された。2月になってからの調査活動は, ブリザード等の強風と地吹雪で効率的でなかった。JARE-26-29の地学調査に生物班が初めて加わったが, 調査計画の立案や行動形態に特に従来と変わったところはない。ここでは, 設営面を含む行動の概要と調査の概略, 調査期間の山地近辺の気象と雪氷状況を報告する。調査の成果については別途, 各分野で詳しく報告される。The summer party of the 30th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-30) carried out the geomorphological, paleomagnetic, geodetic, zoological and botanical field work in the western part of the Sφr Rondane Mountains for 35 days from December 29,1988 to February 1,1989,and around Asuka Station for 8 days from February 2 to 9,1989. The field work in February was largely hampered by bad weather including blizzard. In addition to earth scientists who have been in charge of the field operation of the Sφr Rondane Mountains since JARE-26 (1985), biologists joined the field party for the first time this season under the similar planning and operating scheme formerly adopted. This is the report describing the results of field operations including logistics, a summary of the field work, and some information on weather and surface conditions of snow and ice around the Mountains during this period.

Echinoderes ohtsukai sp. nov. is described from an intertidal flat in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, based on observations with light and scanning electron microscopy. Echinoderes ohtsukai is characterized by 1) a short middorsal spine on segment 4; 2) lateroventral tubules on segments 5 and 8; 3) short laterodorsal tubules on segment 10; 4) a trunk 315-395μm long; 5) a lack of lateral terminal accessory spines in both sexes; and 6) lateral terminal spines of about 50% trunk length. The species has modified type-II glandular cell outlets, which have previously been reported among congeners only in E. rex Lundbye, Rho and Sorensen, 2011 from the Korea Strait.

Occurrences of dental/oral diseases have been reported in the space environment and pre- or post-spaceflight and the deteriorations of oral defensive functions are evident in the space environment simulated experiments. NASA has identified 6 dental problems (Abscess, Avulsion/Tooth Loss, Caries, Crown Replacement, Exposed Pulp/Pulpitis and Filling Replacement) as the most important dental incidents to be dealt with in the long-term mission. To focus on the dental/oral health management for astronauts, dental examination and dental orthopantomogram are conducted as dental diagnosis. In addition, dental nerve block, dental prosthesis replacement and dental pain control are described in the treatment manual on the International Space Station (ISS). However, the systematic program to evaluate the risk of dental/oral problems in spacecraft and the manual to prevent the dental/oral problems in the space environment are still far from sufficient. To promote the dental/oral health of astronauts, the authors are going to launch "Space Oral Health Promotion (SOHP) project" which will tackle the research tasks and the operational countermeasures in space dentistry.
