Coronavirus disease pandemic has led to a shortage of disinfectant alcohol (DA; 76.9–81.4% ethanol solution) in Japan. This study investigated the availability of hypochlorous acid (HA) as an alternative disinfectant to DA in clinical environment. HA is a safe and economical disinfectant with a broad antibacterial spectrum and low risk of hand irritation, which is used worldwide. In this study, HA and sodium hypochlorite solution (SH) were degraded over time and the degradation was accelerated by temperature and lighting. Results of bactericidal effects of HA revealed that the realistic effective concentration should be 200 ppm. Compared with DA, the dental carbon steel burs were more severely rusted by SH and HA. These results indicated that high concentration of HA generated on-site could be an effective and safe disinfectant for use immediately after generation with consideration of object materials in clinical environment, as an alternative to DA.

We proposed switchable and holdable adhesive mechanism using a suction cup and a chamber with a check valve for skin-attaching device. For long-term use of skin-attaching electronic device, both high adhesion during wearing and low adhesion for peeling are required. The chamber induces suction pressure of the suction cup attached to skin. The check valve achieves to switchable and holdable adhesion without vacuuming during wearing by preventing backward flow. In this paper, we evaluated the adhesion force of the device using switchable adhesive mechanism and confirmed that the switchable adhesive mechanism has low and high adhesion.

Scutellariae Radix and its main constituent, baicalin, concentration-dependently contracted the isolated rat aorta, and its contractile responses were tachyphylaxic. Wogonin, another constituent in Scutellariae Radix, conversely concentration-dependently relaxed the contraction induced by phenylephrine in the isolated rat aorta, and the relaxation was not tachyphylaxic. Applying the sample containing baicalin and wogonin in the same proportion as the content ratio in Scutellariae Radix, it was observed that the isolate rat aorta contracted in the same way as Scutellariae Radix and baicalin. From the results with adrenergic blockers, serotonergic blockers, tetrodotoxine and NO synthase inhibitors, it is suggested that the mechanism of contractile effect of Scutellariae Radix and baicalin on the vascular smooth muscle is not based on the adrenergic and serotonergic system, and endothelium derived relaxing factor. Furthermore, cyclooxygenase inhibitors suppressed the contractile response to baicalin in the isolated rat aorta, correlation was identified between prostanoids concentration and the contraction by baicalin. Repeated applications of baicalin induced the decrease of prostanoids production while weakening the strength of contraction. The above results suggest that prostanoids production is involved in the contractile response to baicalin.

As a part of a study on the improvement of flesh texture in cultured red sea bream, we examined whether body density was useful to estimate the body fat content in live fish. A significant negative correlation was seen between body fat content (BF) and body density (BD) for cultured red sea bream aged one and two years as shown below. BD=-0.0018BF+1.0997 (n=97; p<0.001) The deviation of body density from this regression line, the residual value for each fish, was effected by the muscle ratio in the whole body. These results indicate that body density is useful not only to estimate the body fat content but also to surmise the relative level of muscle ratio in live fish.

血液透析患者において適正体液量の維持は心血管合併症や生命予後改善の点で重要である. 今回われわれは, 健常者および血液透析患者に体組成分析装置を用いて透析前後に体液過剰・不足量 (OH) の測定を行い, 有用性の検証について横断的研究を行った. 219名の健常者 (平均年齢68.8±8.4歳, 男性69名) と64名の慢性維持血液透析患者 (平均年齢61.7±12.8歳, 男性37名) を対象とした. 健常者平均OHは0.7±0.8L (平均±SD) であり, 海外での健常者のOH基準値 (−1.1~1.1L) に相当した参加者は全体の76.3%であった. 血液透析患者の透析前平均OHは2.9±1.5L, 透析後平均OHは0.6±1.7Lであった. 透析前後でのOH変化量と体重変化量は有意な相関関係を認めた (r=0.61, p<0.05). 一方, 透析前あるいは透析後OHと透析前血圧・心胸郭比との間には, 有意な相関関係は認められなかった. 透析後血中ANP濃度と透析後OH値との間に正の相関関係を認めた (r=0.48, p<0.05). 透析後血中ANP濃度で3群 (高値群>60pg/mL, 中間群40~60pg/mL, 低値群<40pg/mL) に分類し, 透析後平均OHを比較したところ, 血中ANP濃度が高値になるほどOHも高値となった, p<0.05). これらの結果から血液透析患者において, 潜在的に体液過多となっている患者の存在が示唆された. 目標体重検討の際に考慮する心胸郭比や血圧との有意な相関関係は認められなかったが, 透析前後での劇的なOHの変化や血中ANP濃度との関係をみると, OHは血液透析患者の体液量の指標として有用な可能性がある. 今後OHと心機能との関連性など検証し, 有用性についてさらに具体的に検討していく必要があると思われた.

超臨界CO2中でのtri-n-butylphosphate(TBP)硝酸錯体による酸化ウランの溶解反応について検討を行った結果、濃硝酸とTBPを同体積混合して作成したTBP硝酸錯体(TBP: 2.7 M、HNO3: 4.9 M、H2O: 1.6 M)では、ウランに対して錯体中のHNO3比が4となる錯体添加量のときにウランの抽出率は80%となり、抽出液中には亜硝酸の存在が認められた。

The increase of lifestyle-related diseases in Asia has recently become remarkably serious. This has been associated with a change in dietary habits that may alter the complex gut microbiota and its metabolic function in Asian people. Notably, the penetration of modern Western diets into Asia, which has been accompanied by an increase in fat content and decrease in plant-derived dietary fiber, is restructuring the Asian gut microbiome. In this review, we introduce the current status of obesity and diabetes in Asia and discuss the links of changes in dietary style with gut microbiota alterations which may predispose Asian people to metabolic diseases.

The purpose of this paper is to consider new phase of agricultural extension by the progress of agricultural science in the United States at the end of 19th century. Through comparison analysis of the teaching material used in “Farmer's Reading Course” of College of Agriculture at Cornell University with the agricultural experimental station bulletin, I analyzed devices to make the use of research result for extension learning resources.  At the first year of the reading course of Cornell, the agricultural experimental station bulletin had been read. But, farmers had not understood the fruit of research enough by reading the research book merely. Then, an original teaching material for the course was made. The feature of the text appears to the editorial policy that farmers tied the research result to agricultural practice by themselves, and some devices were given to the text according to the policy. This was a result of groping how college of agriculture was able to contribute to the agriculture in a new age. I think that the college of agriculture tried not only to offer the academic education but to have practiced new “university adult education”.

ワインにとって味の厚みや豊かさは良質な官能評価を得るための必須条件である。また, タンニン量が多い赤ワインでも渋味の強いものもあれば口当たりの滑らかなものに出合うことがある。その原因となっているのが種々の多糖類であると考えられており, 重要な意味を持つ。多糖類の官能的役割と種々の多糖類の起源及び増加させるための醸造技術等について詳述していただいた。

Most of the conventional hydrophones (underwater microphones) use PZT ceramic as the material, and there are problems such as variation in sensitivity, the necessity of high-magnitude amplification and high cost.We developed and evaluated a low-cost, easy-to-use MEMS hydrophone that is waterproof and pressure-resistant while maintaining the bandwidth of a commercially available MEMS microphone.

超低体温循環停止下に逆行性脳循環法を併用した症例において,術後の脳合併症を臨床例で検討した。対象は2001年1月~2005年12月に胸部大動脈瘤手術を施行した151症例とした。咽頭温20℃で循環停止し,逆行性脳循環を血液温18℃,灌流量5~10mL/kgで施行した。上大静脈圧を15~20mmHgで維持した。結果,循環停止時間33±13min,脳逆行性時間19±15min,脳梗塞などの合併症は19症例,病院死亡4症例であった。体外循環管理による事故や合併症はなく,操作によるストレスは感じられなかった。術後24時間以上の覚醒遅延は26症例(17.2%),脳合併症は19症例(12.6%)に併発した。脳合併症が発生した症例の平均循環停止時間は38minであり,全症例の平均循環停止時間33minで有意は見られなかった。そこで,危険因子を多変量解析した結果,人工血管置換の範囲が弓部に及んだ症例で有意(p<0.05)に脳合併症が発生していた。弓部置換をしない症例では脳分離体外循環法より逆行性脳循環法を選択することが,特別な体外循環回路を必要とせず,簡素で安全に施行できると考える。
