Background: Although fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) affect lung function, FMI and FFMI are not independent of each other since FMI and FFMI were calculated as fat mass and fat-free mass divided by height squared, respectively. We aimed to examine the association of combined FMI and FFMI with lung function.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, lung function was evaluated using forced expiratory volume at 1 s and forced vital capacity was measured using spirometry. Both FMI and FFMI were classified into sex-specific quartiles (16 groups). Analysis of covariance was used to assess the associations of combined FMI and FFMI with lung function. The trend test was conducted by stratifying the FMI and FFMI, scoring the categories from 1–4 (lowest–highest), and entering the number as a continuous term in the regression model.Results: This study included 3,736 men and 8,821 women aged ≥20 years living in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The mean FEV1 (standard deviation) was 3.0 (0.7) L for men and 2.3 (0.5) L for women. The mean FVC was 3.8 (0.7) L for men and 2.8 (0.5) L for women. The FMI was inversely associated with lung function among all FFMI subgroups in both sexes. Conversely, FFMI was positively associated with lung function in all FMI subgroups in both sexes.Conclusions: Higher FMI was associated with lower lung function independent of FFMI; higher FFMI was associated with higher lung function independent of FMI. Reducing FMI and maintaining FFMI might be important for respiratory health.

本稿では,急性期・慢性期の疼痛メカニズムを概説するとともに,それぞれの病期のリハビリテーションに必要なコンセプトをまとめた.急性期では,“末梢性感作”が主たる病態メカニズムであるため,消炎・鎮痛作用のある物理療法と運動療法を実施していくことが必要である.慢性期では,脊髄あるいは脊髄上位レベルでの“中枢性感作”を含んだ病態メカニズムが存在するため,運動機能障害・心理的問題などにも対処しながらリハビリテーションを進める必要がある.いずれにしても,症状から病態メカニズムを推測した上で病期別の疼痛リハビリテーションを計画することが重要となる.

The behavioral inhibition network is a conceptual model that combines a mechanism for inhibiting extraneous behavior so that animals can maintain behavior appropriate to their environment, and the other one for suddenly releasing that inhibition and producing unexpected behavior. This model was developed from efforts to reconsider the animal mind not only as a source of mental function, but also as a source of otherness. Originally conceived as a mechanism by which the mind produces otherness, the model has points of contact with Whitehead's philosophy of the organism. The first is that extraneous behaviors hide inside the animal by inhibiting each other, so that behaviors appropriate to the environment are maintained. This function of inhibition is related to the 'negative prehension' in the philosophy of the organism. The second is that unexpected behavior is produced. Unexpected behavior is positioned as extraneous behavior in contrast to environmentally appropriate behavior. On the other hand, in an unknown environment, where it is impossible to choose a suitable behavior from an existing behavioral repertoire, unexpected behavior is positioned as an emergent behavior to help the animal cope for the time being. The emergence of such unexpected behavior is associated with 'novelty' in the philosophy of organisms. This paper considers the significance of the behavioral inhibition network model for the philosophy of organisms. Section 1 explains how this network works, using the example of an experiment leading to unexpected behavior in a familiar animal, the pill bug. Section 2 considers the the relationship between this model and Whitehead’s philosophy of organism.

In elections, the nation is required to judge candidates or parties which have the ability to lead the country or regions toward a good direction. However, in some elections, it seems that the factors extraneous to the ability, such as name value or popularity, have enormous influence to the support attitude or voting behaviour. This study performed questionnaire survey in Sakai city, Osaka prefecture in order to examine the effect of the media which serves information regarding elections to people. As a result, positive correlations has been shown between the contact tendency of media and TV programs which emphasise atmosphere or image and the positive attitude towards candidates or parties. The contact tendency is stronger in Japan Restoration Party, Osaka Restoration Association, and other related candidates.

This article explains the strategy and methodology for promoting citizen participation in the activities of biological diversity surveys basing on the experiences of the Environmental Resources Mapping Project in Osaka City. The project was carried out in fiscal years 1991-1997 by the municipal government with 1200 citizen participants; the author worked as the organizer of citizen volunteers throughout the project period. Encouragement of participants was attained by offering them opportunities for participation in group activities, by giving them intensive and systematic training through instructor group leaders and survey manuals, by providing them with opportunities to report the results of their own surveys, by publishing their findings in mass-media such as television and newspapers, and by issuing annual reports on the project. With active participation, the project was able to publish four colored environmental resource maps, one course guidebook, and two mesh data books as final reports on its activity. Since the completion of the project, the network of citizen volunteers, one of the most valuable fruits of the project, has been maintained by shifting the work base to the Eco Museum of Osaka, a center for environmental education founded in 1997.

有用微生物およびその代謝産物はプロバイオティクスとして,健康増進作用があると考えられている.今回,納豆菌から選択し得られた Bacillus subtilis AK 株の代謝産物である Extract of Metabolic Products of Bacillus subtilis AK (EMBSAK) の経口摂取が,NK 細胞活性に及ぼす影響を解析した.その結果ラットでは飲用群のうち 50%に NK 細胞活性の増強が認められた.ヒトボランティアを用いたEMBSAKの合成商品である SARABAGAN の 7 日間の飲用試験では,濃度依存的に末梢血中の NK 細胞活性が増強する被験者の数の増加が認められた.今回の研究により,反応性には個人差があるものの,SARABAGAN の経口摂取により NK 細胞活性を増強しうることが明らかとなり,SARABAGAN が補完代替医療として有用である可能性が示唆された.

ニコチンは,神経細胞の興奮性やシナプス伝達を変化させる.脳内報酬系におけるニコチンの作用は多くの注目を集めているが,ある種の記憶・学習の成立に必要な構造である海馬でもニコチンが多様な効果をもたらすことがわかってきた.ニコチン受容体は抑制性介在ニューロンに多く発現しているが,そのサブタイプによって,ニコチン刺激に対し速い脱感作を示したり,あるいは持続的に反応したりする.その結果,ニコチンは複数の機序によって抑制性シナプス伝達を修飾し,主細胞である錐体細胞の興奮性を調節する.また,抑制性シナプス伝達の修飾に加え,ムスカリン受容体の活性化を含む機序によって,N-methyl-D-aspartate受容体反応を増大させ,記憶・学習の細胞レベルでの基礎過程と考えられている長期増強の誘導を促進する.ここでは,上記のような,海馬神経回路に対するニコチンの効果とその作用機序について概説し,ニコチンの作用の多様性について述べてみたい.

Objective: A few cases of postsurgical iatrogenic arteriovenous shunts have been reported, with the arterial blood flow directly entering the pial veins. Herein, we reported a patient with a dural artery–pial vein shunt found 1 year after aneurysmal clipping.Case Presentation: A 64-year-old male presented with generalized convulsion 1 year after cerebral aneurysmal clipping. A CT showed intracerebral hemorrhage in the temporo-occipital cortex and a dural artery–pial vein shunt in proximity to the previous craniotomy center. The arterial blood flow from the deep temporal artery, the middle meningeal artery, and the anterior auricular branch of the superficial temporal artery shunted into the superficial middle cerebral vein, with evident cortical venous reflux. Embolization was performed with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate and completely occluded the shunt. The patient was discharged without neurological deficits.Conclusion: Endovascular liquid embolization may be an effective treatment for iatrogenic dural artery–pial vein shunt.

Helium is a typical carrier gas for GC-MS systems and is a limited and valuable material. Here, we introduce alternative gas analysis technologies that utilize hydrogen and nitrogen. When hydrogen is utilized in a GC-MS system, it is more sensitive and has better separation than nitrogen. On other hand, in the case of nitrogen, it is easier to handle as compared to hydrogen. In this paper, basics gas chromatography is explained, and the gas analysis technologies using hydrogen and nitrogen as an alternative to helium gas are described. These technologies will contribute to reducing the consumption of helium.
