The Gobi Desert is one of the major sources of Asian dust, which influences the climate system both directly and indirectly through its long-range transport by the westerlies. In this desert, three ground-based lidars are operated in Dalanzadgad, Sainshand, and Zamyn-Uud, Mongolia. This study firstly combined these lidars into a lidar network and shows the spatial development of a dust layer over the desert and the long-range transport of the dust during 22–23 May 2013 via the lidar network. During this dust event, a cold front accompanying an extratropical cyclone moved southeastward across the desert and sequentially passed through Dalanzadgad, Sainshand, and Zamyn-Uud. In Dalanzadgad, in the central part of the desert, a dust storm occurred owing to the strong wind (6–10 m s -1) associated with the cold front and reached a top height of 1.6 km. Some of the dust floated at a height of 0.9–1.6 km along the cold frontal surface. In Sainshand and Zamyn-Uud, in the eastern part of the desert, the dust layer extended from the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) to the free troposphere in the updraft region of warm air in the cold frontal system. Overall, while the dust layer was moving across the desert with the cold frontal system, it was developing up to the free troposphere. The mechanism of this development can be explained by the combination of two processes as follows: (1) continuous emission of dust from the desert surface to the ABL by the strong wind around the cold front and (2) continuous transport of the dust from the ABL to the free troposphere by the updraft of the warm air in the cold frontal system. This mechanism can contribute to the long-range transport of dust by the westerlies in the free troposphere.

米国では、「プレイスメイキング(Placemaking); 以下、 PM」という考え方の下、公園や広場、街路といった公的空間(パ ブリックスペース)の計画・設計、運営が行われ、周辺の住民 や就業者のサードプレイスとなっている。また、都市部の公的空間の一部は訪問者や観光客の「居場所」になっている例も見られる。 我が国では、2014 年度に国土交通省都市局主催で PM フォーラムとシンポジウムが開催される等、本概念に注目が集まり、 様々なまちで検討・試行されはじめている。 しかし、コミュニティの再生や賑わいの創出といったまちな かの居場所づくりに寄与する概念であると確信しながらも、その定義は曖昧であり、具体的手法もほとんど示されていない。 本稿では、文献調査からPM の定義を概観し、PM の原則について示した上で、PM における公的空間の場の評価項目について考察し、本概念の明確化を試みることを目的とする。

The federal system of India today is composed of linguistic states, corresponding to a linguistic division of the population, which emerged through general states reorganization in 1956. The idea of state reorganization on a linguistic basis in the preindependence era had been embodied from the 1920's through the "divide and ruie" policy adopted by the British government, and was taken up by the Indian National Congress out of the practical necessity to activate a national movement and to placate the muslim population. After independence, the INC shelved the issue on the grounds that linguistic states would pose a menace to national integration. The reorganization of the linguistic states in 1956, however, materialized because of the emergence of the state of Andhra in 1953, which had come into existence only after the fast and ensuing death of an agitator, and out of economic convenience to accomplish the 5 years' plan effectively. Andhra state, which led the states reorganization on a linguistic basis, was the consequence of the Andhra movement, which had been rising since the beginning of the 20th century in Andhra region, a part of the Madras Precidency, where Telugh language was spoken. The Telugu area was divided into Madras Precidency and Hyderabad Princery state. The Telugus were in the minority compared with the Tamils in Madras Precidency, and remained underdeveloped under the Muslim rulers in Hyderabad. In 1953 the Andhra region seceded from Madras state and named their territory Andhra state. Then Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1956, a united Telugu state annexing the Telugu area in Telangana. However, there emerged a strong demand for a separate Telangana state in 1968 led by people discontented with the economic imbalance. Why did such separatism have to take place in Andhra Pradesh, which was considered as the pioneer and model linguistic state in free India? The consistent phenomenon through Andhra Movement was the ascent of the castes on the political scene. The Andhra Movement was started by Telugu Brahman, and the largest landed non-Brahman caste groups, the Reddy and Kamma, participated in the movement during late 20's and 30's. In particular, the Reddy, widely spread throughout the Telugu area, came to power, which enable surpass the Brahmans, because they were reorganized and united by the emergence of a united Telugu state. Moreover, after Andhra Pradesh was formed, the people who belonged to the minor castes and factions gained influence in state politics and led a movement to agitate for a separate Telangana state. In short, the Andhra Movement was represented the ascent of the Reddy carried out around the symbol of Telugu language ; and the Telangana Separatists Movement was represented the ascent of the minor castes caused by economic imbalance. Thus, the inconsistent tendency to form and disunite the linguistic state can be seen in the consistent one of the steady ascent of castes.

Generation of singlet oxygen by solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes acute inflammatory responses in the skin. Accumulation of singlet-oxygen-quenching antioxidants in the skin can suppress this photo-oxidative stress. This study evaluated the effect of dietary xanthophylls from red paprika fruit extract on UV-induced skin damage. A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled parallel group comparison study involving 46 healthy volunteers was performed. The minimal erythema dose (MED) of each individual was determined prior to the study. A capsule containing paprika xanthophylls (9 mg) or a placebo was administered daily for 5 weeks. The MED, minimal tanning dose (MTD), skin physiology parameters (skin color, hydration, and barrier function), and facial skin physiology parameters were evaluated at weeks 0, 2, and 4. The MED of the verum group at 2 and 4 weeks after administration was significantly higher than that of the placebo group. At 4 weeks, the suppression of UV-induced skin darkening by the verum diet was significantly greater than that of the placebo. There were no significant differences in facial skin parameters between the verum and placebo groups. Our results indicate the efficacy of dietary paprika xanthophylls in suppression of UV-induced skin damage.

This paper investigates motion characteristics of the wheeled inverted pendulum robot, which is a commercial product for tele-communication and has a built-in stabilizer. We are motivated to utilize this type of telepresence robot for scientific communication with children. For safe activities, accidents caused by the robot, for example, collisions and overturning, must be avoided. In this paper, we examine behaviors of the wheeled inverted pendulum under several conditions: changing floors, transmission speed for control, and frequency of input of remote control. In our experiments, we did not encounter overturning of the robot during the robot moved under these experimental conditions. Of course, the robot turns over when someone pushes or pulls the robot with excessive external forces that breaks the stability of the inverted pendulum.

Platinum-group elements (PGE) in nonmagnetic panned-out detrital samples from the northern Kamuikotan ophi-olitic complex, Hokkaido, was examined by neutron activation method. Their Cl-chondrite normalized PGE patterns are similar to those of ophiolitic host rocks and chromitite. Positive correlation between the iridium and chromium contents imply that iridium-series-PGE anomalies are probably due to chromite-hosted platinum-group minerals. Averaged PGE concentration in the samples from the central Hokkaido (Do-ou) region is almost eight times higher than that from the northern Hokkaido (Do-hoku) region. Based on the chemical analyses and the estimated reserve of chromite, total amounts of PGE included within placer chromite grains are estimated to be 17 kg in the northern Hokkaido, and 245 kg in the central Hokkaido.

Background:The clinical usefulness of peripheral blood (PB) mononuclear cell (MNC) transplantation in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), especially in those with mild-to-moderate severity, has not been fully clarified.Methods and Results:A randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-mobilized PBMNC transplantation in patients with PAD (Fontaine stage II–IV and Rutherford category 1–5) caused by arteriosclerosis obliterans or Buerger’s disease. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). In total, 107 subjects were enrolled. At baseline, Fontaine stage was II/III in 82 patients and IV in 21, and 54 patients were on hemodialysis. A total of 50 patients had intramuscular transplantation of PBMNC combined with standard of care (SOC) (cell therapy group), and 53 received SOC only (control group). PFS tended to be improved in the cell therapy group than in the control group (P=0.07). PFS in Fontaine stage II/III subgroup was significantly better in the cell therapy group than in the control group. Cell therapy-related adverse events were transient and not serious.Conclusions:In this first randomized, large-scale clinical trial of G-CSF-mobilized PBMNC transplantation, the cell therapy was tolerated by a variety of PAD patients. The PBMNC therapy was significantly effective for inhibiting disease progression in mild-to-moderate PAD.

Association of felis catus papillomaviruses (FcaPVs) with feline squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has been reported worldwide, while there is limited information about FcaPVs in Asia. In this study, 21 feline SCC biopsy samples from cats in Japan were analyzed by PCR with PV consensus primers and type-specific primers for FcaPV type 2 (FcaPV-2), FcaPV-3 and FcaPV-4 designed in this study. Sequence analysis revealed that one sample was FcaPV-3, and two were FcaPV-4. In both FcaPV-4 positive samples, 334th tryptophan in L1 ORF was deleted compared with the reference sequence. Moreover, immunohistochemistry showed that p16 protein was positive in both FcaPV-4 detected samples. This study would contribute to the molecular epidemiological and pathological understanding of FcaPV in Japan.

ハワイ島はハワイ諸島最大の島で, 群馬県と埼玉県を合わせたくらいの面積をもつ。活発に噴火を続けるキラウエアのほか, 歴史時代に噴火記録があるマウナロアとフアラライ, 4,205mの山頂まで車で行くことができるマウナケア, 山頂近くまで深い谷に刻み込まれたコハラ, の5火山からなる火山島である (図1) 。ハワイ・ホットスポットの火山活動を観察するのに最適の島だ。オアフ島のホノルルから直行便が, 東海岸のヒロと西海岸のコナへ毎日数便飛んでいる。私たちはキラウエアに近いヒロへ飛ぶことにしよう。アメリカのレンタカーは一週間単位で借りると割安だから, ハワイ島に7泊する旅行計画を立てるとよい。40ドルの乗り捨て料金を負担すれば, ヒロ空港で借りた車をコナ空港に返すこともできる。実際, 私は11人の仲間といっしょに1997年12月24日にヒロ空港に降り立ち, 南回りで移動して, 12月31日早朝コナ空港から帰国の途についた。この火山見学案内は, そのときの体験と, 過去3回の私自身のハワイ島旅行経験 (1983年, 1987年, 1991年) に基づいて執筆したものである。出発当日に旅行代理店の倒産を知らされるという困難を克服して, 9日間の旅行を実り多く, しかも楽しく終えることができたのは, 旅行に参加した群馬大学教育学部学生と卒業生みなさんの力による。なお, 旅行参加者全員の分担執筆による体験記をウェブページ (http://www.edu.gunma-u.ac.jp/~hayakawa/fieldguide/p/US/HI/hawaii 97.html) で公開している。これから現地に行く人に利用していただけたら幸いです。

As the observations we can make from patients are limited compared to the complexity of the physiology, underdetermined inverse problems appear often in the parameter estimation problems of physiologically based pharmacokinetics (PBPK) models. We address this issues of not being able to identify the model parameter set uniquely by finding multiple sets of possible parameter sets that are consistent with the observations. As this approach requires multiple parameter estimations of a complex model, the computational cost can be a bottle neck. In this paper, we introduce a new computationally efficient algorithm called the Cluster Newton method to find multiple solutions of an underdetermined inverse problem.

アシナガコシジロウミツバメ(Oceanites oceanicus)の日本近海の発見例は犬吠崎における1例(清棲,1932)があるのみであった。1967年7月,東京大学海洋研究所の本田座氏は同所淡青丸で三陸沖調査中1羽捕獲し,写真を撮り,これを著者に提示された。著者は帯黄色の蹼と〓蹠の長さから本種と同定した。また海鷹丸で著者は11月,鳥島の東50海里の海上で1例を得て測定し,南極大陸産の亜種Oceanites oceanicus exasperatusであろうとした。北太平洋における既知例は日本近海の1例,カリフォルニヤ沖の2例であったが,これらに2例を加えた。
