Re-examination of morphological features and newly executed molecular analysis based on chloroplast (rbcL, rps4, and trnL-F) and nuclear (ITS1&2) genomes revealed unexpected diversity in Symphyodon perrottetii Mont. s. l. (Symphyodontaceae) in East and Southeast Asia. Japanese plants previously recognized as S. perrottetii are shown to include at least five different species: S. asper (Mitt.) A.Jaeger, S. copelandii Broth., S. gollanioides Nog., S. recurvomarginatus (Dixon & Sakurai) H.Akiyama, comb. nov. and S. rheophilus H.Akiyama, sp. nov. In addition, previous Japanese record of S. echinatus (Mitt.) A.Jaeger is actually S. asper. Symphyodon longispinosus H.Akiyama, sp. nov. from southwestern China is newly described. Subsequently, S. perrottetii s. str. is excluded from China and Japan and has its revised distribution range from southwest India (type locality of S. perrottetii), Sri Lanka, central Thailand, and Singapore. Symphyodon merrillii Broth., once regarded as a synonym of S. perrottetii, is again recognized as a distinct species with its distribution in Malesia and Indochina. Symphyodon ovalifolius H.Akiyama & M.Suleiman, sp. nov. is described and classified under the subgenus Parasymphyodon H.Akiyama & M.Suleiman, subg. nov. Rheoshevockia fontana Ignatov, W.Z.Ma & D.G.Long is again demonstrated to have a unique systematic position sister to the genus Symphyodon.

A new locality of Lecanorchis nigricans from West Java, Indonesia, is reported, and a description based on the Javanese material is provided. Since L. nigricans was known previously from Japan, Taiwan, Fujian (China) and Thailand, this discovery represents the southernmost occurrence of the species. Based on the chasmogamous flowers, spatulate sepals and petals, and cucullate lip, these plants should be L. nigricans var. yakushimensis among the three varieties of L. nigricans. Considering that species of Lecanorchis are easily overlooked in the wild due to their short flowering season and dwarf habit, L. nigricans may be more widely distributed in Southeast Asia.

Food chemistry studies on enzymatic browning and the Maillard reaction were reviewed. Enzymatic browning can broadly be categorized into immediate and delayed types. We investigated the mechanisms and regulation of enzymatic browning of apple as an example of the immediate type, and browning of lettuce and mung bean sprout as the delayed type. The Maillard reaction is the major cause of non-enzymatic browning. However, melanoidins, which are the major brown pigments formed by the reaction, are large, heterogenous, high-molecular-weight compounds with chemical structures that are difficult to elucidate. We therefore focused on the low-molecular-weight pigments formed by the Maillard reaction. We identified various novel pigments in model systems and foods based on instrumental analyses.

腎の排泄機能不全によって、体内に蓄積する蛋白結合能阻害因子(PB-Ix)は、他の物質と競合して、アルブミンと結合すると考えられている。今回の研究によって、馬尿酸および2a, 2bと命名された中分子物質と同定したPB-Ixは、HD、HFよりHDFによって比較的容易に除去された。但し、PB-Ix活性という観点からみると、それらの血液浄化法では、その改善を計ることができず、CAPDのみが活性値を正常値の近くまで回復させることができた。

With understanding that the study of the external agglomeration economies is increasingly significant in both theoretical and applied analyses in the field of spatial economics,this paper attempts to investigate the influence of the T-external economies (i.e.,the external agglomeration economies stemming from "the total number of consumers who actually purchase a specific type of service") upon the utility level of those who consume the service.Our analysis is besed on the assumption that there exists a market where one kind of composite goods and one kind of service are transacted,and that an individual consumer in this merket may,if s/he can afford to do so,purchase any non-negative amount of the composite goods and either zero or one unit of the service.In this setting,we first obtain the demand surface by use of the following curves and surface as the basis: (i) a utility curve for the consumption of the non-negative amount of the composite goods,(ii) a utility surface for the simultaneous consumption of the non-negative composite goods and one unit of the service,and (iii) the income-density distribution curve.We also assume that the utility surface reflects the existence of external agglomeration economies stemming from "the total number of consumers who actually purchase the service" (i.e.,the equilibrium demand level for the service).The shape of the obtained demand surface resembles a platypus' upper bill with its right-hand side vertically trimmed to a degree.Secondly,from the demand surface,we obtain the derived demand curve which serves as the actual market demend curve.This curve has upward convexity and forms a bell-shaped curve.Thirdly,we briefly discuss the research agenda to follow the investigation in this paper.

long RP' tachycardiaとは,いわゆる上室性頻拍のなかで,頻拍中のP波の出現時相が,先行するQRS(R)波よりも,それにひき続くR波に近接するタイプの頻拍のことをいい,したがって,R-P'/P'-Rの比が1よりも大きい頻拍のことである.この際,P'波と表記するのは,この心房波の由来が洞性のものではなく,異所性P波ないしは逆伝導性P波であることを示すためである. 本タイプの頻拍が注目をひくようになったのは,1967年,Coumelがその心電図的,電気生理学的特徴を報告してからである1).

The toxic heavy metal cadmium has been proven to cause pancreatic dysfunction and lead to the development of DM. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been completely elucidated. Here, we investigated the effects of cadmium on the pancreatic β cell line MIN6 and explored the underlying mechanisms. The Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) assay and flow cytometry were used to determine cell viability and apoptosis in MIN6 cells. The expression levels of signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) were assessed by western blotting. We further assessed the effects of cadmium on the function of pancreatic β cells under high glucose levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blotting. Insulin secretion and expression were decreased by cadmium in MIN6 cells. In addition, cadmium suppressed cell viability and promoted apoptosis of MIN6 cells, downregulated insulin secretion and genesis of MIN6 cells under high glucose conditions, while inhibiting STAT6. Furthermore, after treatment with IL-4, the activator of STAT6, the MIN6 cell viability suppression and apoptosis promotion effect caused by cadmium were blocked. In conclusion, cadmium inhibits pancreatic β cell MIN6 growth by regulating the activation of STAT6. Our findings reveal a new mechanism of cadmium toxicity in pancreatic β cells.
