In this paper, we compare Attainment Test for Mathematics and Engineering Mathematics Test (EMaT) carried out by National Institute of Technology, Kure College from 2015 to 2017. We found significant positive correlations between them, implying that academic development of mathematics in Kure College successfully connects to engineering mathematics in university. However, we also found that approximately half of the students do not reach sufficiently high learning level for the engineering mathematics in university. Moreover, differences of scores among four departments are found to be significant. Considering these results, we suggest some educational plans to improve the learning level for the engineering mathematics in university.

This study investigated time series changes and relationships of affects, cognitions, and behaviors immediately, a few days, and a week after anger episodes. Two hundred undergraduates (96 men, and 104 women) completed a questionnaire. The results were as follows. Anger intensely aroused immediately after anger episodes, and was rapidly calmed as time passed. Anger and depression correlated in each period, so depression was accompanied with anger experiences. The results of covariance structure analysis showed that aggressive behavior was evoked only by affects (especially anger) immediately, and was evoked only by cognitions (especially inflating) a few days after the episode. One week after the episode, aggressive behavior decreased, and was not influenced by affects and cognitions. Anger elicited all anger-expressive behaviors such as aggressive behavior, social sharing, and object-displacement, while depression accompanied with anger episodes elicited only object-displacement.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a profound impact on our society, and health care professionals are challenged by the present outbreak. A recent study showed that a significant proportion of second-line workers and frontline workers experienced psychological distress. Although these findings suggest the possibility that rehabilitation therapists, especially those who work at the hospital, experience psychological distress, their mental health state has been largely dismissed and the number of an evidence-based practice is limited. Here, we discuss the importance of focusing on the mental health of therapists by introducing studies that focus on the mental health of health care workers during the COVID-19, SARS, and H1N1 influenza pandemics. We then noted the need to track the dynamic relationship between the mental health of therapists and the COVID-19 pandemic by employing longitudinal data collection with psychological measures that reliably and validly capture the mental health of therapists. This approach would be effective for preparation for future pandemics, as we have learned much from previous pandemics. We hope that our Tutorial Note will help readers who are interested in the mental health of rehabilitation therapists and encourage future studies.

It has long been believed that the tip of a knife-edge has a single small radius and the radius becomes larger with abrasion during daily use. Recently, for the most popular knife made of SUS 420J2, the authors have found that the tip has two micro-blades (the secondary blades) with a groove between them along the knife-edge and the groove grows and thus its width becomes larger with cutting operations. In this paper, this evidence is confirmed to be true even for the knife of a heat resisting alloy-SUH3 and a high-hardness Zirconia Ceramics, and thus it is concluded that the formation of such groove and its growth is a general phenomenon for almost all knife-edges. For each tested blade, the relationship between the cut piece number of paper (NCP ; the cutting performance) and the repetition number of abrading operation (Nt) is approximately expressed as an exponential relation. Ideas to express the durability of cutting performance (Nt*), the total cutting performance (TNP) and the feeling of cutting paper (ACP) through the service period are proposed and quantitatively evaluated for the tested materials. It is surprisingly found that even for the brittle Ceramics, the relationship between the groove spread and Nt is almost the same as those for SUS420J2 and SUH3. In comparison with SUH3 and SUS420J2, Zirconia Ceramics has the highest durability Nt*, the best total cutting performance (TNP) and the best feeling of cutting (ACP). The ratio of the durability, total performance and the feeling of cutting to those of SUS420J2 are 28, 40 and 1.4 for SUH3, and 48, 71 and 1.5 for Zirconia Ceramics, respectively.

Strategic management and decision-making for the brand portfolio are essential means of maintaining competitive advantage. Brand portfolio strategy is attracting attention as a method of managing multiple brands. This paper looks at the cosmetics industries of Japan and Korea, comparing the brand strategies of Shiseido and Amorepacific, leading companies in these countries, to examine the importance of brand positioning in strategy for competitive advantage. It also considers positioning in brand portfolio strategy, through consistency between companywide strategies and individual strategies from a competitive strategy perspective. Previous studies have discussed the strategic importance of diversification of risk, synergy effects, and efficient operation through the composition of the brand portfolio. This study considers the differences between the brand portfolio and its constituents the corporate brand and individual brands, from a competitive strategy perspective. It also reviews the brand positioning of Shiseido and Amorepacific by comparing their brand deployment graphed in three dimensions along the axes of function, price range, and distinctiveness, based on product characteristics. The results showed that while Shiseido focuses on function and price range, Amorepacific focuses on distinctiveness and function, leading to some new discoveries regarding the strategies of both companies. While it had not been possible to describe consistency between positioning of the corporate brand strategy and individual brand strategy solely from a traditional competitive strategy perspective, the author was able to identify such consistency through depiction along three axes.

This research study investigated the similarities and differences in help-seeking intentions for depression and recognition of the effectiveness of help-seeking among Japanese university students and Chinese international students. Data were collected from 389 Japanese students and 284 Chinese international students. Based on a scenario on depression that was provided, each student was asked about their help-seeking intentions and their recognition of the effectiveness of several help-seeking resources. In descending order, both groups valued the effectiveness of a friend, counselor and family member more than other options. Both groups were more likely to choose friend, family member or handling matters themselves over seeking help from mental health professions. Japanese students had higher valuation of help-seeking resources when “handle matters themselves” was not included as an option than Chinese international students. However, Japanese students showed higher intention of handling matter themselves. This result implies that Chinese international students are more likely to seek help if services are provided for them even though they do not value the effectiveness of help-seeking resources as much as Japanese students.

漢方は1875年に明治維新政府によって捨て去られるまで,我が国の医療の主流であった。1910年,和田啓十郎は『医界之鉄椎』を公刊し,西洋医学との協調の下に漢方を正当に評価すべきことを提唱した。今から丁度100年前,明治43(1910)年のことである。この著作に啓発され,漢方復興運動に取り組んだのが湯本求真であり,そして湯本求真の精神に共鳴したのが大塚敬節である。このように見ると,この『医界之鉄椎』が漢方の復興に果たした歴史的意義は甚大である。本稿では『医界之鉄椎』が発刊された当時の時代背景と,それから一世紀,我々の先輩は何を成し遂げたかを明らかにした。

微生物が金属材料を腐食する現象は,古くから微生物腐食として知られている.微生物腐食は,正に金属が患う微生物感染症と言える.1934年に微生物腐食に関する仮説が提唱されて以来,多くの研究者がこの問題に取り組んできた.しかし理論だけが先行し,疾患の原因とも言える腐食原因菌はなかなか同定されず,そのメカニズムも解明されていなかった.そのようななか,2004年Nature誌に新規腐食原因菌が報告されたことを端緒に,この10年間で次々と新規腐食原因菌が見つかり,研究が飛躍的に進んでいる.本稿では,微生物による金属腐食現象を微生物が引き起こす金属の感染症として捉え直し,今何が不足し,今後何を明らかにしていかなければならないのか解説する.

本稿は、ベトナムの新宗教カオダイ教による社会活動を半世紀にわたり分析することで、教団が維持・拡大してきた要因を明らかにするものである。1920年代、フランス植民地下のベトナム南部で誕生したカオダイ教は、設立直後から善行を重視し、組織的な社会活動を展開してきた。しかし、教団発行の活動報告書を基に1940年代以降の活動内容及び費用の変遷を追っていくと、国家制度や社会の変化に伴い教団の社会活動が拡大してきた点は事実とは言え、実際に多くの資金・労力が投じられてきたのは、教団内の福利厚生の充実や関連施設の整備であった点が判明する。その理由として、①不安定な時期に教団存続を図る上では、富と力の誇示が不可欠であった点、②明確な布教手段を持たない教団が新たな人員を獲得するためには、政府をはじめとする教団内外に自らの権威を示す必要があった点を挙げることができる。

呉公園屋台は、営業場所を道路区域から公園区域に変更し、呉市都市公園条例の適用及び、蔵本通りの屋台に関する要綱を制定することで新規屋台の営業を可能とした全国的にもめずらしい公園屋台である。2002年には新規屋台を公募し、現在はこれまでの中華そば、おでんが主流の既存屋台とイタリアン、オリジナル料理などの新規屋台が混在している。本研究では、こうした新旧混在する屋台の実態とそれにより生まれる街や通りの賑わいの効果について考察することを目的とする。

Distributional and breeding records by specimen or photographic evidences, additional to the 1958 edition of the handlist of Japanes birds are given of 69 species and one hybrid Lanius cristatus cristatus ×lucionensis. Many records from Riu Kiu Is. are included. Three notes are added: 1. Subspecies of Passer montanus many be devided into kaibatoi (Sakhalin to Yakushima), saturatus (Amami-Oshima to Ishigaki I.) and taivanensis (Iriomote to Formosa). 2. Iriomote I. should be omitted from the distributional localities of Rallina eurizonoides sepiaria and Gallicrex cinerea.

(1) とうがらしの辛味成分であるカプサイシンの酸部分である炭素数10のイソ脂肪酸に類似した酸を,天然に広く存在する鎖状モノテルペンより合成し,これとバニリルアミンからカプサイシン系辛味物質を合成し,天然のカプサイシン辛味成分混合体およびバニリルノナンアミドとその辛味を比較検討した。(2) 辛味についての官能審査の結果,NELSONの報告とはやや異なり,バニリルノナンアミドは,天然のカプサイシン辛味成分混合体に比べて辛く,バニリルジメチルオクタンアミドはさらに辛かった。(3) プラスターに添加した場合の皮ふに対する刺戟性では,バニリルジメチルオクタンアミドは,バニリルノナンアミドの約1/2であった。

A fabrication process of tungsten probes for surface profile measurements has been improved. The probe contour is designed to have an optimum shape for the use of tapping stylus. An improved DC electropolishing is applied for the elimination of surface impurities and smaller stylus radius with exponential contour, which uses an electrical flushing and a surface tension control of the electrolyte. The process is experimentally confirmed to have advantages for the fabrication of the stabilized stylus contour, typically with a stylus radius of 30nm. They have smoother contours compared with those fabricated by AC electropolishing.
