Except for metal-free chlorophylls (pheophytins) functioning as primary electron acceptors in purple bacteria and in photosystem II of higher plants, all the naturally occurring chlorophylls have been believed to be magnesium complexes. To clarify the reason for the choice of Mg as the central metal of chlorophylls, we have systematically studied the absorption, fluorescence and redox properties of metallo-substituted chlorophylls, and concluded that Zn-substituted chlorophylls may act as both antenna and primary electron donor of photosystems. Quite recently, we discovered novel photosynthesis using Zn-containing bacteriochlorophyll a in an acidophilic bacterium Acidiphilium rubrum. This finding indicates an unexpectedly wide variability of photosynthesis.

Production technology in traditional industries is inherited in the form of " remember while watching the back of the master." It is a knowledge base of the form of "tacit knowledge", and they need to be formalized by the power of science and technology. Movement of experts is recorded using an infrared camera. The position in the space of the marker affixed to each part of the body of the subject is acquired as digital data. In this report, Kyoto bow showed examples that formalized the tacit knowledge of manufacturing in traditional industries. Kyoto bow is a Japanese bow often used for archery enthusiasts. Mr. Shibata is the 21st bow priest. In order to elucidate the tacit knowledge, he possessed, vibration tests and bending tests were conducted. Test results proved that materials with high modulus of elasticity were chosen when Mr. Shibata chooses materials.

都市において大震災が発生した場合,複数の都市鉄道路線で復旧に数ヶ月もの期間を要する恐れがあり,鉄道の長期途絶が経済社会活動の停滞に与える影響は極めて大きく,代替交通手段の確保が必要である.そこで本研究では,鉄道が復旧するまでの交通機関として代行バスに着目した.まず,阪神・淡路大震災時の代行バスの成果と課題を整理し,その技術的・制度的工夫および成果と課題について把握し,震災時の都市鉄道の効果的な代行バスの運行に資するための提案を試みた.

Background:This study examined treatment patterns, possible statin intolerance, and incidence of cardiovascular events (CVEs) in 2 cohorts of patients with high cardiovascular risk (i.e., patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease [ASCVD] and patients with diabetes mellitus).Methods and Results:A retrospective cohort study examined adults initiating either a statin or ezetimibe from 1 January 2006 to 31 May 2014 in the Japan Medical Data Center database. The first observed statin or ezetimibe prescription defined the index date. Patients had ≥12 months of pre- and post-index date plan enrollment. Two high-risk cohorts, the ASCVD cohort and diabetes cohort, were created based on diagnoses observed during the 12 months’ pre-index date. Treatment patterns, possible statin intolerance, and incidence of CVEs were reported. In the ASCVD cohort (n=5,302), 32.9% discontinued therapy, 7.7% switched to a non-index statin or non-statin lipid-lowering therapy, and 11.2% augmented index therapy in the 12 months’ post-index date; only 0.3% were using high-intensity statins and 10% had possible statin intolerance. Also, 8.1% had any new CVE during the follow-up period. Treatment patterns and incidence of CVEs among the diabetes cohort were similar to those of the ASCVD cohort.Conclusions:High cardiovascular risk Japanese patients had frequent treatment modifications, although use of high-intensity statin doses was rare. These patterns may indicate that alternative therapies for lipid lowering are needed.

わが国における亜急性硬化性全脳炎 (SSPE) の疫学像を明らかにする目的で, 臨床調査個人票の解析を行った. 患者の重複を除外して, 125人 (男: 66人, 女: 59人) の臨床調査個人票を集めることができた. SSPE発病時の年齢分布は5~14歳にピークがみられた. 麻疹の罹患は109例で時期が明らかにされており, 80%以上が2歳未満で罹患していた. 麻疹罹患からSSPE発病までの期間の分布は5年から10年の問に集中していた. 平均は8.8年 (標準偏差=4.3年), 中央値は7.8年, 最短は2月, 最長は23.6年であった.

Participants in conversation take speaking turns regularly and smoothly although who speaks and when he speaks are not decided in advance. Great attention has been paid to these phenomena in various areas. As for processing models of turn-taking, however, only the code model based on turn-taking signals has been proposed so far, wihch has been pointed out, by several researchers, to have serious problems. In this paper, we propose an alternative model, the autonomous model. The basic assumptions of this model are: (1) the speaker and the hearer share cognitive environment including the speaker's speech, according to which the hearer takes her own speech actions, and (2) unlike the code model, the hearer need not decode speaker's intent on his speech actions. We predict the distribution of smooth, as well as non-smooth, transitions between speakers based on the autonomous model and the code model, and compare them with those observed in real spoken dialogues, showing that the autonomous model can account for fundamental characteristics of turn-taking phenomena more precisely than the code model. We further discuss how the autonomous model accounts for the predominant occurrence of smooth transitions.

Focusing on a functional component of Momordica charantia, saponin, we investigated its effects on serum glucose and neutral fat levels. Saponin was extracted as a butanol-soluble fraction (saponin fraction) from hot blast-dried Momordica charantia powder. The disaccharidase-inhibitory activity and the pancreatic lipase-inhibitory activity of the saponin fraction were measured, and in vivo sugar- and lipid-loading tests were performed. The saponin fraction inhibited disaccharidase activity and elevation of the blood glucose level after sucrose loading. The fraction also markedly inhibited pancreatic lipase activity and elevation of the serum neutral fat level after corn oil loading. Based on these findings, the main active component related to the anti-diabetic effect of Momordica charantia is present in the butanol fraction, and it may be saponin. The blood glucose and serum neutral fat-lowering effects of Momordica charantia were closely associated with its inhibitory activity against disaccharidase and pancreatic lipase.

合成核酸(合成オリゴヌクレオチド)を医薬品として開発する試みが活発である。同時にさまざまな乗り越えるべき問題点が多く存在しているのも事実である。本総説では、核酸分子固有の問題点を列挙し、それらを克服しえる化学的な手法について歴史をさかのぼって概説する。オリゴヌクレオチドの化学合成、使用される保護基、化学修飾に用いられる置換基、機能性残基を概観し、将来の核酸医薬の合成と応用に利用可能な手法を展望する。

Crystal structure and neutron scattering length density distribution of a pyrochlore-type ytterbium titanate Yb2Ti2O7 have been investigated by in situ neutron powder diffraction measurements at 293 and 1173 K, Rietveld analysis and maximum-entropy method (MEM). In the MEM neutron scattering length density distributions of Yb2Ti2O7, the oxide ion O48f bonding to Ti cation was relatively localized at lower temperature of 293 K, while it was largely distributed at a higher temperature of 1173 K. At 1173 K, one oxide-ion diffusion path along the 〈110〉 unshared edge of TiO6 octahedron was clearly visualized and the other oxide-ion diffusion path along 〈100〉, strictly 〈2 −8x(O48f) + 3 8x(O48f) − 3〉, shared edge of TiO6 octahedron was also indicated. Here x(O48f) is the atomic coordinate x of O48f anion. The MEM neutron scattering length density distribution and difference bond valence sum map at 1173 K strongly suggested that the energy barrier for oxide-ion migration along 〈110〉 directions was lower than that along the 〈100〉 one. Oxide ions three-dimensionally diffuse through both the 〈110〉 and 〈100〉 paths across the unit cell.

This study aimed to investigate the preventive effect of periodic hot water spraying against powdery mildew in strawberry as an alternative to chemical application as a protection method. Young upper leaves of ‘Sachinoka’ were dipped in hot water at 50°C for 20 s. Conidia of powdery mildew were inoculated 24 h after the treatment. The occurrence and growth rates of powdery mildew were apparently lower on leaves dipped in hot water than on those left untreated. Thus, resistance against powdery mildew was thought to be successfully induced by heat shock. Change in leaf temperature was tested using a prototype of a hot water sprayer at 57 ± 2°C. The resultant rise in temperature and temperature attained varied widely across the leaves. Nonetheless, the minimum requirement of a leaf temperature of 50°C in 10 s for inducing systemic resistance against crown rot could be attained in the treated plants. In this study, weekly hot water spraying treatments were conducted in ‘Sachinoka’ in 2008 and in ‘Tochiotome’ and ‘Hitachi-hime’ in 2009. In 2008, powdery mildew occurred explosively in the non-treated plants. However, its occurrence in plants treated with hot water spraying was less than that in the controls, but more than that after chemical application. In 2009, the occurrence rate was lower than that in the non-treated group of 2008 and extremely low after hot water spray treatment and chemical protection in both the varieties. Whether the difference in the occurrence of powdery mildew in both the years was because of the difference in environmental conditions or the difference between the varieties is not known. The plant height of ‘Hitachi-hime’ tended to become short after hot water spraying; however, no serious effects were noted on the growth and yield of strawberry plants. In conclusion, heat shock treatment by using hot water spraying can be considered an alternative method to chemical protection against mild powdery mildew incidence in strawberry.

This paper intends to analyze the philosophical speculation of Akhond-zade (1812-78) known not only as one of the earliest play wrights in Azerbaidzhan but also as a vigorous advocator of a reform of the Arabic alphabet. Although he was a government emploee of the Tzarist Russia, he keenly sympathized with Persian nationalists and their movement. In his highly controversial speculative work, the Maktubat-e Kamal al-Dowle, he severely criticized Islamic fanaticism (Ta'assob-e Eslami) as a main obstacle to the diffusion of Western Civilization, which he understood in an unrealistic manner. He also, in his work, shows a nationalistic heart harbouring anti-'Arab sentiments.He was admittedly a materialist: yet he took advantage of Persian mysticism, especially, its pantheistic monist concept of unity of existence to systematize his own claims. The world, according to him, is a total and complete Being, that is “Complete Force”, which manifests itself in diverse forms regulated by the law of Nature. Moreover, this complete force, he asserts, could be considered as an existence realized when a “whole” and a “part” are integrated, both of which have neither beginning nor end. There is no difference between them, for which he declares that they exist as one like a human body.Thus, nominally advocating the breakout of the “prison” of metaphysics, he developed this unique materialist “ontology”. It paved the way for denouncing the justice of the Quranic God and the Creator for the 'Arab as well.

By considering, including the comparison with the architectural works of a series of TOYODA design and features of the former Hiroshima Joint Savings Bank head office building, we discuss architectural design of his activities.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify changes within an area along Old Sanyo Street in Saijo, in terms of the usage of the closed shop-houses and the sites and buildings established for Japanese brewing companies. Literature documentation, a measuring survey, and interviews were conducted. The findings are as follows. The area flourished as a place for rest and relaxation in the Edo era. However, now it is inactive because the number of shops has decreased and some sites were converted into parking lots in the late 20th century. Activity along the street has fallen considerably, because the closed shop-houses have been used only for storage or have become vacant, while the living areas are located at the back. The Japanese brewing companies were established in the early 20th century, yet moved to enlarged sites nearby and out of the area. They converted surplus spaces along the street for public use. After that, a touring network of public spaces inside the companies'sites along the street was established. These changes shifted the active area of Old Sanyo Street from the street itself to the insides of the companies'sites.

近年,各地の地下水や湧水は環境保全や食の安全と関連して人気が高まっている。また健康へのリスクの評価や鉱泉基準(地下水中のラドン濃度が74Bq/L以上)を満たすかどうかという点で,地下水中のラドン濃度の測定は重要である。本研究ではγ線スペクトロメトリを用いて西条酒仕込み水8か所のラドン濃度を測定した。ラドン濃度は月1回の頻度で2年間にわたり測定し,季節変動の有無,井戸の違い,ラドン濃度とpH,水温,気温との相関を調べた。その結果,西条酒仕込み水のラドン濃度の平均値は160Bq/Lであり,多くの仕込み水が鉱泉基準を満たしていることがわかった。また,ラドン濃度は特定の季節に変動する現象はなかった。水温,気温,pHとラドン濃度の間に明確な相関は見られなかったが,井戸の種類では打ち抜き井戸に比べてボーリング井戸のラドン濃度が高いことがわかった。

がん抗原ワクチン療法は,腫瘍関連抗原(TAA)由来のペプチド,蛋白質,DNA/RNAなどの種々の形状のTAAをがん患者に投与して,がん細胞に特異的な細胞傷害性T細胞やヘルパーT細胞などの免疫細胞の誘導と活性化を促し,腫瘍縮小効果や延命効果を期待する治療法である。現在,様々な悪性腫瘍に対してTAAワクチン療法の臨床試験が進行中である。最近は,がん細胞に生じた遺伝子変異に由来するネオ抗原を標的とするワクチン療法や,免疫チェックポイント阻害療法との併用などのより個別化され,かつ複合的ながん抗原ワクチン療法に注目が集まっている。
