“SEKKI” phenomena often appear in the Japanese historical literatures as distinct red emission in the nocturnal sky. The Japanese word “SEKKI” means the red atmosphere. We compile 16 events of SEKKI for 12-19th centuries in the literatures. In order to understand the SEKKI phenomena, we compared 2 events of SEKKI on February 21, 1204, and September 17, 1770, with the characteristics of low-latitude auroras studied recently by modern scientific methods. We conclude that these historical SEKKI phenomena are probably giant low-latitude auroras.

本文は,増加する認知症患者の背景と現状を鑑み,認知症患者に対する歯科口腔保健・歯科医療のあり方に関して整理を行い,現時点での日本老年歯科医学会の立場を表すものである。 日本老年歯科医学会は,高齢化が進むわが国で,高齢者歯科医療のあり方について積極的に取り組んできた。しかし,認知症患者に対する歯科口腔保健・歯科医療に対する取り組みは十分とはいえない。 近年,地域包括ケアがわが国の施策の中で重要なミッションの一つになっており,その中で“QOLの維持・向上”に対して歯科が大きな役割を果たす必要がある。そのためには,原因疾患や神経心理学的症状を理解し,病態の進行を的確に予測した継続的な支援計画と歯科治療計画を検討し,柔軟な対応を行うことが必要である。 本文で指摘した認知症発症と口腔との関係,認知症初期段階での早期発見への関わりの整備,歯科医療の意思決定プロセスの整備,歯科治療・口腔機能の管理などの指針の作成を科学的根拠のもとに進め,他の医療,介護・福祉関係者だけでなく,国民に十分な理解を得て,認知症患者の歯科的対応と歯科治療を充実させ,認知症患者のQOLの維持と尊厳保持を進めていくことが日本老年歯科医学会の使命と考える。そのために,日本老年歯科医学会は,日本老年学会,歯科関連学会と協働し,学際的および多職種と連携して認知症の諸問題の解決に取り組み,正しく必要な情報を社会に発信していく決意をここに示す。

This article will examine the potential of the Belgian social restaurants as a type of social enterprise for poverty reduction. A case study will be analyzed according to five factors relevant to poverty reduction using interview and survey data. It shows how the most direct contribution lies in social employment, while creating more indirect opportunities to counter social inclusion.

Renal Fanconi syndrome has recently been associated with the ingestion of pet jerky treats from China in mostly small breed dogs in North America, Australia and Europe. We report here about two dogs with Fanconi syndrome following pet jerky treats exposure in Japan. A mixed-breed dog and a French bulldog showed weight loss, polyuria and polydipsia. For years, the owners had been feeding large quantities of pet jerky treats containing chicken prepared in China. Diagnostics revealed glycosuria without hyperglycemia, severe aminoaciduria, and in one case also ketonuria, hypokalemia and metabolic acidosis. A diagnosis of Fanconi syndrome associated with long-term consumption of Chinese pet jerky treats was made. Both dogs recovered fully following withdrawal of the pet jerky treats and supportive care. Fanconi syndrome of dogs in association with the consumption of pet jerky treats of Chinese origin can cause a broad proximal tubular defect with glycosuria and generalized amino aciduria, and should be also considered in Asia. Jerky treats associated Fanconi syndrome can be completely reversible following withdrawal of the treats and supportive care to correct the metabolic abnormalities.

A sensitive non-derivatization method for the determination of the highly polar compound 3-aminopiperidine was developed using a mixed-mode column combined with a charged aerosol detector (CAD). Chromatographic conditions, including the type of detector, separation mode, and mobile phase composition, were optimized to achieve high sensitivity towards and sufficient retention of 3-aminopiperidine. Compared to the precolumn derivatization UV method, the current method showed higher recovery and greater simplicify. High sensitivity (LOQ <2.73 μg mL−1) and good precision (RSD of peak area <2%) were also observed in the current method. Furthermore, the parameters such as buffer solution and column bleed that affected the sensitivity of the CAD were investigated. Finally, the current method was applied for the determination of 3-aminopiperidine in linagliptin samples. This is a new non-derivative for the determination of 3-aminopiperidine, and constitutes a novel application of the CAD for the quantitative analysis of highly polar basic compounds.

歩行空間の性能評価において歩行者流の密度-速度関係を考える場合、この関係がミクロスケールで地点依存しうる課題がある。しかし、現状の測定手法では地点依存を考慮した適切な測定箇所の設定は容易でない。これに対し、密度-速度関係の空間内での分布をも詳細に把握できれば、より精緻な設備配置や流動制御への展開が期待できる。本研究では、歩行者流の密度-速度関係に空間相関構造を組み込み、空間全域の測定データをひとつの回帰式でモデル化する方法を示す。空間フィルタリング手法である Harmonic Spatial Filtering により定式化し、横断歩道での実データに対し密度-速度関係と空間内の相関構造とを推定した。空間相関を考慮しない場合と比べて回帰精度の向上を示すとともに、推定された空間相関構造を解釈した。

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been reported to exhibit a variety of biological effects including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities. The extent of an in vitro glycation reaction mixture of collagen and glycolaldehyde was assayed to investigate the inhibition of glycolaldehye-derived advanced glycation end products (glycol-AGEs) formation with GNPs in collagen, which is a major protein component of the human dermis. GNP-treated collagen showed significantly less glycation (56.3±4.2%) than an untreated glycation control. Moreover, GNP-treated glycation in a collagen lattice model significantly decreased the AGEs distribution in the model system. Taken together, these results suggest that GNPs have the potential for use in the prevention of glycation-induced skin aging.

CMCにおける絵文字のように,線画による表情には幾つかの特定の色が使用されることが多い.本研究では線画表情からの感情認知が,色によってどのように影響されるかを考察した.実験1では,喜び,悲しみ,怒り,驚きを表していると認知されやすい線画表情,中性表情を表す線画表情,あいまいな線画表情の計6つの線画表情を用いて,顔色の部分を赤,黄,青と変化させ,その表情認知を比較考察した.実験2では,背景色を変化させて,感情認知への影響を考察した.実験1,2ともに,主として眉毛や口の形態を感情認知に用いているが,顔色や背景色も感情認知を促進することを明らかにした.具体的には,実験1では,顔の赤色が喜び感情と怒り感情の認知を促進する一方,青色が喜び感情の認知を抑制した.また,青色が悲しみ感情の認知を促進した.実験2では,赤と黄の背景色が喜び感情の認知を促進し,青の背景色は悲しみ感情を促進した.

Immobilization of invertase on cross-linked polymers consisting of cellulose and polyethyleneimine (Cell-PEI) and the enzymic activity of immobilized invertase were investigated. Invertase was coupled with Cell-PEI by glutalaldehyde. The amount of invertase coupled was independent of reaction temperature and increased with an increase in invertase concentration. Neutral or weak basic conditions were favorable for the coupling reaction.The optimum pH of invertase activity was shifted to acidic side by the immobilization. The activity at the optimum pH was 26% of that of native invertase. The optimum temperature of invertase activity was little affected by the immobilization. The immobilized invertase was repeatedly used without the activity loss.

A centrifugal phytotron was designed and fabricated to study the effects of gravity on the growth of plant. The magnitude of centrifugal force can be selected arbitrarily up to 4G by controlling angular velocity of cultivation drum (1 m diameter). Environmental factors in this phytotron such as temperature, humidity, CO2 concentration and light intensity can also be conditioned.On the earth, different magnitude and different direction of artificial gravity, which is centrifugal force plus 1G earth gravity, distribute over the cultivation drum. Results of spectral analysis on vibration of the cultivation drum showed that overall vibration changed with centrifugal force and ranged from 0.7 to 2.1G.Wind velocity over the cultivation drum increased with raising centrifugal force and ranged from 1.5 to 2.7 m s-1.Results of preliminary cultivation experiment with radish (Raphanus sativus L.) showed that mean dry weight of the plants cultivated under centrifugal force of 2G was not significantly different from that of the plants cultivated under centrifugal force of 1G, and root/total dry weight ratio increased with raising centrifugal force. These tendency, however, might be due to several physical factors described above.Isolation of gravitational effect on the plant growth from existing influential factors such as the vibration and wind will be required for further experiment.

本研究の目的は, 保育士の経験年数や勤務状況, 首尾一貫感覚, 対処スキルと抑うつの関連を検討することである。法人立保育園の保育士 292 名を対象として 2012 年に実施した自記式調査 (“CES-D Scale”, “Kiss-18”, “TAC-24”, “SOC 3-UTHS”) を分析した。その結果, 常勤か非常勤か, 1 人担任か複数担任かといった保育士の勤務状況と抑うつとの関連は見られなかった。相関の結果に基づいて, パス解析を行った結果, 経験年数と首尾一貫感覚は, 「対応のスキル」や「肯定的解釈と回避的思考」といった対処スキルを介して, 抑うつに関連することが明らかとなった。

In this study, we attempted to isolate Escherichia coli from healthy adults in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and characterized its antimicrobial resistance profile, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genotype, phylogenetic grouping and virulence gene profile. A total of 103 E. coli isolates were obtained, and most of them were antimicrobial resistant such to streptomycin (80.6%), tetracycline (67.0%), ampicillin (65.0%), sulfamethoxsazole/trimethoprim (48.5%), nalidixic acid (43.7%), chloramphenicol (34.0%), cefotaxime (15.5%), ciprofloxacin (15.5%), kanamycin (12.6%), ceftazidime (10.7%), fosfomycin (4.9%) and gentamicin (2.9%). However, all these E. coli strains were susceptible to imipenem. Surprisingly, of 103 strains, 74 (71.8%) and 43 (41.7%) strains showed resistance to more than 3 and 5 classes of antimicrobials, respectively. Furthermore, 10 E. coli strains were ESBL-producers and positive for blaCTX-M genes (7 for blaCTX-M-9 and 3 for blaCTX-M-1), while five were additionally positive for blaTEM genes. S1-nuclease pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis revealed that 7 and 3 strains of E. coli carry blaCTX-M genes on their large plasmid and chromosome, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis exhibited that majority of the E. coli strains was grouped into A (44.7%), followed by B1 (23.3%), B2 (18.4%) and D (13.6%). Virulence genes associated with diarrheagenic E. coli, such as astA, EAF, eaeA, elt and eagg were also detected in ESBL-producing E. coli as well as antimicrobial resistant strains. These data suggest that commensal E. coli of healthy human could be a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance determinants and some of them might be harmful to human.

Although white and grey forms had long been known in Japanese Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon, its scarcity prevented detailed research. Contrary to a former opinion that these were color phases, Mr. H. Sato (1957) considered them as seasonal forms and later suggested (1968) that the grey form is caused by cosmetic coloration toward breeding season.This paper presents a detailed analysis on the mechanism of this type of color change based on numerous feather samples offered to Yamashina Institute by Mr. Y. Muramoto who collected them in its natural habitat in Ishikawa for many years. Supplemental observations were made with live birds in Sado I. with valuable assistance of Messrs. K. Chikatsuji and T. Takano of Ibis protection Center. Histological studies were made by the author at Department of Zoology, Tokyo University.Some important points clarified in this paper are as follows:1. The feather samples suggested neither of the known types of color change: 1) molting, 2) abrasion, 3) cosmetic staining with color substance in preen oil, 4) photo chemical change of biochrome in the feather, and 5) external staining (e. g. iron in water birds).2. Under the feathers surrounding the naked face of Japanese Crested Ibis, a particular area of the skin was found producing 'black substance.' (Fig. 12).3. A few tiny samples of this black substance fell on the snow when a captive ibis scratched that region of the head (Fig. 13, 14). These could be collected and used for chemical analysis (to be published elsewhere).4. Prior to the breeding season, in late January through February, a characteristic behavior of rubbing the side of its head to the shoulder region was observed after bathing. This was named 'daubing behavior' (Fig. 16) and it lasted 20-30 minutes followed by normal preening.5. The grey, or rather blackish, tint of the neck to shoulder region got deeper as the 'daubing behavior' was repeated.6. Histologically, it was proved that the grey tint was caused by external adherance of 'black substance' to the proximal (not distal) barbules of the normal white feathers (Fig. 4-10).7. The black substance on the feathers and those picked up after head scsatching were identical microscopically and chemically. These are supposed to come out along feather pores of the skin, since the feathers of the black substance producing area had black ring near the root of the rachis (Fig. 2, 9, 10).8. The change from grey to white form occurred by normal post-nuptial molting (Fig. 17) and neither 'daubing behavior' nor dropping of black substance was observed after bathing in this period.9. The 'daubing behavior' was so important in this new type of plumage color change that even during the critical period of change from white to grey form, the white plumage remained untinted unless this behavior was performed, which always occurred after bathing. Five to six bathing-'daubing behavior' sequences completed a typical grey form. The first bathing of the season was observed on a fine day in late January.10. Physio-ethological mechanisms and the hormonal control involved were analysed (Fig. 20) and significance of the grey form was discussed eco-evolutionarily.

Wide-ranging varieties and/or strains of bulb onions (Allium cepa Common onion group) and shallots (A. cepa Aggregatum group) were utilized to understand the variation in chemical compounds responsible for their taste. The bulb samples of 10 F1 commercial onion varieties (seven short-day and three long-day varieties) from Japan and 12 shallot landraces from abroad (Vietnam: three landraces; Indonesia: nine landraces) were collected as plant materials once a year in 2014 and 2015. The contents of S-alk(en)yl-L-cysteine sulfoxides, total flavonoids, and soluble sugars—including fructose, glucose, sucrose, and fructans—were determined to find differences between bulb onions and shallots, as well as to detect variations among varieties and/or landraces. While a principal component analysis (PCA) based on the results from both 2014 and 2015 could clearly discriminate shallots from bulb onions from a phytochemical perspective, bulb onions mainly had higher monosaccharides than shallots. By contrast, shallots produced more disaccharides than bulb onions. In most cases, regression analyses using the numerical data of the chemical compounds found in bulb onions and shallots suggested year-year correlations between 2014 and 2015. The flavonoid and PeCSO (S-(1-propenyl)-L-cysteine sulfoxide: isoalliin) contents in shallots were higher than those detected in bulb onions, which indicated the stronger pungent and bitter taste could be attributable to excess amounts of these compounds in this tropical plant.
