Eddy transport of atmospheric water vapor from the tropics is important for rainfall and related natural disasters in the middle latitudes. Atmospheric rivers (ARs), intense moisture plumes that are typically associated with extratropical cyclones, often produce heavy precipitation upon encountering topography on the west coasts of mid-latitude North America and Europe. ARs also occur over the northwestern Pacific and sometimes cause floods and landslides over East Asia, but the climatological relationship between ARs and heavy rainfall in this region remains unclear. Here we evaluate the contribution of ARs to the hydrological cycle over East Asia using high-resolution daily rainfall observations and an atmospheric reanalysis during 1958-2007. Despite their low occurrence, ARs account for 14-44 % of the total rainfall and 20-90 % of extreme heavy-rainfall events during spring, summer, and autumn. AR-related extreme rainfall is especially pronounced over western-to-southeastern slopes of terrains over the Korean Peninsula and Japan, owing to strong orographic effects and a stable direction of low-level moisture flows. A strong relationship between warm-season AR heavy rainfall and preceding-winter El Niño is identified since the 1970s, suggesting the potential of predicting heavy-rainfall risk over Korea and Japan at seasonal leads.

A previously unknown morel species apparently endemic to Japan is here described. Morchella nipponensis is proposed for this species. This new taxon displays archaic features recalling section Rufobrunnea (pileus lanceolate, few primary alveoli), and a yellow pileus similar to subsection Sceptriformis of section Morchella. The phylogenetic analysis of ITS rDNA, as well as RPB1, RPB2 and TEF1 genes from up to four collections suggests that this morel species represents a basal branch of section Morchella (yellow morels), for which the new subsection Japonicae is proposed.

Aging is recognized as a common risk factor for many chronic diseases and functional decline. The newly emerging field of geroscience is an interdisciplinary field that aims to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of aging. Several fundamental biological processes have been proposed as hallmarks of aging. The proposition of the geroscience hypothesis is that targeting holistically these highly integrated hallmarks could be an effective approach to preventing the pathogenesis of age-related diseases jointly, thereby improving the health span of most individuals. There is a growing awareness concerning the benefits of the prophylactic use of probiotics in maintaining health and improving quality of life in the elderly population. In view of the rapid progress in geroscience research, a new emphasis on geroscience-based probiotics is in high demand, and such probiotics require extensive preclinical and clinical research to support their functional efficacy. Here we propose a new term, “gerobiotics”, to define those probiotic strains and their derived postbiotics and para-probiotics that are able to beneficially attenuate the fundamental mechanisms of aging, reduce physiological aging processes, and thereby expand the health span of the host. We provide a thorough discussion of why the coining of a new term is warranted instead of just referring to these probiotics as anti-aging probiotics or with other similar terms. In this review, we highlight the needs and importance of the new field of gerobiotics, past and currently on-going research and development in the field, biomarkers for potential targets, and recommended steps for the development of gerobiotic products. Use of gerobiotics could be a promising intervention strategy to improve health span and longevity of humans in the future.

The prevalence of cancer-associated anemia (CIA) is high, and the mechanisms governing its development remain poorly understood. Eryptosis, the suicidal cell death of red blood cells (RBCs), may account for CIA as it is triggered by clinically approved chemotherapeutics including cisplatin and paclitaxel. Physcion (PSN), an anthraquinone extracted from rhubarb and other plants, has shown great promise as an anticancer agent. However, the potential toxicity of PSN to RBCs remains elusive. RBCs were isolated from heparinized blood, and incubated with 10–100 µM of PSN for 24 h at 37 °C. Hemolysis was photometrically calculated from hemoglobin concentration in the medium at 405 nm, while flow cytometry was employed to investigate cardinal markers of eryptosis. Phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure was detected by Annexin-V-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), intracellular calcium by Fluo4/AM, cellular volume from forward scatter (FSC), and oxidative stress by 2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA). PSN induced overt hemolysis at 50 and 100 µM which was not mediated through calcium influx, protein kinase C, casein kinase 1α, or receptor-interacting protein 1. Moreover, PSN caused significant increase in Annexin-V-FITC and Fluo4 fluorescence with no appreciable influence on FSC or DCF values. Accordingly, PSN stimulates premature eryptosis characterized by PS externalization and intracellular calcium overload without cell shrinkage or oxidative damage. In conclusion, this report shows, for the first time, that PSN is cytotoxic to RBCs by inducing hemolysis and programmed cell death which may limit its success as a chemotherapeutic agent.

2019年に発生した新型コロナウイルス疾患(coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19)により急性呼吸不全を呈する重症患者管理の根幹は,呼吸機能低下に対する支持療法としての人工呼吸と体外膜型肺(extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ECMO)である。COVID-19患者数が増加していることを踏まえ,臨床現場での参考となりうるECMOに関する標準的なケアの概要を,専門家のコンセンサスステートメントとして提案した。ECMO管理のための適応,管理方法および注意点を,資源制約のある場合を含めて記載した。

Objective: To perform a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of therapeutic exercises for workers suffering from rotator cuff (RC) tendinopathy.Methods: A literature search in four bibliographical databases (Pubmed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PEDro) was conducted from inception up to February 2015. RCTs were included if participants were workers suffering from RC tendinopathy, the outcome measures included work-related outcomes, and at least one of the interventions under study included exercises. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated with the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment tool.Results: The mean methodological score of the ten included studies was 54.4% ± 17.2%. Types of workers included were often not defined, and work-related outcome measures were heterogeneous and often not validated. Three RCTs of moderate methodological quality concluded that exercises were superior to a placebo or no intervention in terms of function and return-to-work outcomes was observed. No significant difference was found between surgery and exercises based on the results of two studies of low to moderate methodological quality. One study of low methodological quality, comparing a workplace-based exercise program focusing on the participants' work demands to an exercise program delivered in a clinical setting, concluded that the work-based intervention was superior in terms of function and return-to-work outcomes.Conclusion: There is low to moderate-grade evidence that therapeutic exercises provided in a clinical setting are an effective modality to treat workers suffering from RC tendinopathy and to promote return-to-work. Further high quality studies comparing different rehabilitation programs including exercises in different settings with defined workers populations are needed to draw firm conclusions on the optimal program to treat workers.

Toward reconstitution of living cells by artificial cells technology, it is critical process to understand the differences between mixtures of biomolecules and living cells. For the aim, we have developed procedures for preparation of an additive-free cell extract (AFCE) and for concentrating biomacromolecules in artificial cells. In this review, we introduce our recent progress to reconstitute intracellular environments in vitro and in artificial cells.

The hot springs in certain areas of Ramsar contain 226Ra and 222Rn. The effects of natural radiation on the inhabitants of these areas and the inhabitant's radiosensitivity or adaptive responses were studied. One group of volunteers from areas with high natural background radiation and another group from areas with normal background radiation were chosen as the case and control group respectively. The frequency of micronuclei, apoptosis, and DNA damage in peripheral blood mononuclear cells were measured following γ irradiation (4 Gy). The incidence of micronuclei in the case group was significantly lower than that in the control group while their frequency of apoptosis was higher (P < 0.05). However, the rates of induced DNA damage and repair were significantly higher in the case group (P < 0.05). Smaller number of micronuclei and higher levels of apoptosis in the case group could be the result of higher resistance to radiation stress and a more rigorous checkpoint at cell division. However, regarding the alkaline labile sites, the individuals in the case group are more sensitive and susceptible to DNA damage. The results of micronuclei, apoptosis and repair studies suggest that an adaptive response might be induced in people residing in areas with high background radiation.

大麻の有効成分であるカンナビノイドは、逆行性の神経伝達物質として注目を受けたが、近年では、感覚皮質においてのスパイクタイミング依存性可塑性の長期抑圧を導く伝達物質として再度注目されている。一方、長期抑圧が誘導されると、入力線維はしばしば刈り込まれることが知られている。このことは、カンナビノイド投与単独でも入力線維の刈り込がおこる可能性を示している。我々は、視床-皮質投射において、発達期にカンナビノイド受容体依存性の長期抑圧が起こることを見出した。視床-皮質投射の変化を調べたところ、長期抑圧が起こっている時期に一致して軸索の退縮が起こることも見出した。外因性にカンナビノイドを投与することによって退縮が起こるかは現在検討中である。

There is emerging evidence of prolonged recovery in survivors of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), even in those with mild COVID-19. In this paper, we report a case of a 39-year-old male with excessive body weight and a history of borderline values of arterial hypertension without therapy, who was mainly complaining of progressive dyspnea after being diagnosed with mild COVID-19. According to the recent guidelines on the holistic assessment and management of patients who had COVID-19, all preferred diagnostic procedures, including multidetector computed tomography (CT), CT pulmonary angiogram, and echocardiography, should be conducted. However, in our patient, no underlying cardiopulmonary disorder has been established. Therefore, considering all additional symptoms our patient had beyond dyspnea, our initial differential diagnosis included anxiety-related dysfunctional breathing. However, psychiatric evaluation revealed that our patient had only a mild anxiety level, which was unlikely to provoke somatic complaints. We decided to perform further investigations considering that cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) represents a reliable diagnostic tool for patients with unexplained dyspnea. Finally, the CPET elucidated the diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle, which was the most probable cause of progressive dyspnea in our patient. We suggested that, based on uncontrolled cardiovascular risk factors our patient had, COVID-19 triggered a subclinical form of heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) to become clinically manifest. Recently, the new onset, exacerbation, or transition from subclinical to clinical HFpEF has been associated with COVID-19. Therefore, in addition to the present literature, our case should warn physicians on HFpEF among survivors of COVID-19.

近年,クラゲが日本近海に大量発生し,水産業や臨海施設に大きな被害を与えているが,このクラゲを脱塩・乾燥した細片(クラゲチップ)を水田に施用すると肥料効果だけでなく抑草効果を併せ持つことが示された.しかし,収量が慣行栽培(化成肥料,除草剤使用)より約10%低いこと,抑草効果が不十分でかつ不安定であることなど実用化に向けての様々な課題が指摘された.そこでクラゲチップと同様に2つの効果を併せ持ちながら含有成分や肥料効果の発現時期の異なる米ぬかに着目し,これをクラゲチップと併用して試験を行った.その結果,クラゲチップを単独に施用した場合に比べ,両者を併用した場合には収量は慣行栽培とほぼ等しく雑草発生量は顕著に減少した.本研究よりクラゲチップと米ぬかを併用することで,慣行栽培なみの収量が得られ,抑草効果も顕著に高まることが明らかになった.収量性の向上は,両者の成分含有率と肥料効果発現時期の違い,抑草効果の向上は両者がそれぞれ持つ成長抑制物質の違いによる相乗効果に起因したと考えられた.

Green- or brown-striped trematode sporocyst broodsacs typical of Leucochloridium infecting the ocular tentacles of a land snail, Succinea lauta, were collected in Abashiri, Hokkaido in northern Japan (N43° 59´, E144° 14´) in June of 2000 and 2001. The metacercariae isolated from the sporocyst broodsac were morphologically identified as Leucochloridium spp. (Leucoclhoridiidae Poche). This report is the first to describe evidential specimens of the sporocyst broodsac of the genus Leucochloridium Carus, 1835, infecting the intermediate host in Japan, suggesting that Leucochloridium spp. completes Their life cycle in Hokkaido, Japan.

Diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of falls, which increases the incidence of osteoporotic fractures and accordingly decreases quality of life. However, the association between fall risk and diabetic complications is not completely understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the association between fall risk and osteoporotic fractures in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We enrolled 194 Japanese patients with T2DM and assessed their fall risk using a brief interview form that included five items covering physical and social aspects of functioning and environmental factors. We examined the associations between fall risk and the presence of diabetic complications, such as neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and osteoporotic fractures (including any fracture and vertebral fractures only). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, a longer history of T2DM, the presence of neuropathy and PAD, and a history of any fractures were significantly and positively associated with the risk of falls. On the other hand, a lower body mass index, the presence of neuropathy, and the risk of falls were independently and positively associated with the risk of any fracture. When fractures were limited to vertebral fractures only, the association with the risk of falls remained significant. We found that the risk of falls and osteoporotic fractures were associated in patients with T2DM and that a brief screening test of the risk of falls was useful for assessing the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

Background:The prognostic impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) among patients at high risk for heart failure (HF) remains unclear. In addition, there is no risk estimation model for AF development in these patients.Methods and Results:The present study included 5,382 consecutive patients at high risk of HF enrolled in the CHART-2 Study (n=10,219). At enrollment, 1,217 (22.6%) had AF, and were characterized, as compared with non-AF patients, by higher age, lower estimated glomerular filtration rate, higher B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) level and lower left ventricular ejection fraction. A total of 116 non-AF patients (2.8%) newly developed AF (new AF) during the median 3.1-year follow-up. AF at enrollment was associated with worse prognosis for both all-cause death and HF hospitalization (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.31, P=0.027 and aHR 1.74, P=0.001, for all-cause death and HF hospitalization, respectively) and new AF was associated with HF hospitalization (aHR 4.54, P<0.001). We developed a risk score with higher age, smoking, pulse pressure, lower eGFR, higher BNP, aortic valvular regurgitation, LV hypertrophy, and left atrial and ventricular dilatation on echocardiography, which effectively stratified the risk of AF development with excellent accuracy (AUC 0.76).Conclusions:These results indicated that AF is associated with worse prognosis in patients at high risk of HF, and our new risk score may be useful to identify patients at high risk for AF onset.

福島第一原発事故から1年が経過した2012年に福島県内で採集したスズメ目鳥類3種(ヤマガラ,スズメ,カワラヒワ)の成鳥と,シジュウカラの未孵化卵および巣材で測定した放射性セシウム(134Cs および137Cs)濃度から,内部および外部被曝線量率と,それらの合計被曝線量率を推定した.外部被曝線量率が合計被曝線量率に寄与する程度は,生息地の微細環境(例:地表,空中および樹上,巣内)の汚染の程度と,生活史段階(成鳥もしくは卵の各段階)に応じた各微細環境での活動時間の影響を受け変化した.すなわち,シジュウカラの未孵化卵の外部被曝線量率は内部被曝線量率よりも高く,主に巣材の汚染に由来していた.シジュウカラの主な巣材は多量の放射性核種を保持することが知られているコケ類で,外部被曝線量と内部被曝線量率の差は1,000倍以上に及んでいた.さらにシジュウカラの未孵化卵で推定された合計被曝線量率は,野外で測定した空間線量率をはるかに上回っていた.これらの結果は,野生動物に対する放射線被曝の影響を評価するためには,詳細な線量分析を実施することと共に,慎重に対象種の生活史を考慮することで,個体に対する生物学的影響のより適切な評価に繋がるだろう.

本ガイドラインは,それまで日本集中治療医学会規格・安全対策委員会(当時)で進行中であった作業を引き継ぐ形で,2013年3月に発足したJ-PADガイドライン作成委員会が作成した,集中治療室における成人重症患者に対する痛み・不穏・せん妄管理のための臨床ガイドラインである。その作成方法は米国で作成された「2013 PAD guidelines」に準じているが,内容は「2013 PAD guidelines」以降の文献の検討をも加えたばかりでなく,人工呼吸管理中以外の患者に対する対応や身体抑制の問題なども含み,さらに,重症患者に対するリハビリテーションに関する内容を独立させて詳述するなど,わが国独自のものも多い。わが国の集中治療領域の臨床現場で,本ガイドラインが適切に活用され,患者アウトカムの改善に寄与することが期待される。

We examined the effects of dietary vitamin D deficiency on markers of mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics in rat soleus muscle. Male Wistar rats were fed a chow with no vitamin D (No-D; 0 IU/kg) or a moderate dose (Mod-D; 2,000 IU/kg) of vitamin D chow for 8 wk. Compared to the Mod-D group, at 8 wk the No-D group showed significantly lower serum 25(OH)D levels. Although vitamin D deficiency had no effect on body composition, the No-D rats showed significantly decreased levels of PGC-1α, a marker of skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis, and DRP1, a marker of skeletal muscle mitochondrial fission. The change in the PGC-1α protein expression and the serum 25(OH)D concentrations were significantly correlated. The change in DRP1 protein expression and the serum 25(OH)D concentrations tended to be correlated. There was no significant between-group difference in markers of mitochondrial fusion (MFN2 and OPA1) and mitophagy (PARKIN) in soleus muscle, and no relationship with serum 25(OH)D concentrations. Collectively our findings suggest that dietary vitamin D deficiency decreased PGC-1α and DRP1 protein expression in rat soleus muscle.

Recent progress in computing and model development has initiated the era of global storm-resolving modeling and with it the potential to transform weather and climate prediction. Within the general theme of vetting this new class of models, the present study evaluates nine global-storm resolving models in their ability to simulate tropical cyclones (TCs). Results show that, broadly speaking, the models produce realistic TCs and remove longstanding issues known from global models such as the deficiency to accurately simulate TC intensity. However, TCs are strongly affected by model formulation, and all models suffer from unique biases regarding the number of TCs, intensity, size, and structure. Some models simulated TCs better than others, but no single model was superior in every way. The overall results indicate that global storm-resolving models are able to open a new chapter in TC prediction, but they need to be improved to unleash their full potential.
