A large-scale collapse occurred at the eastern slope of Fuji volcano about 2900 years ago, based on calibrated <sup>14</sup>C age of a wood sample collected in the resulting debris avalanche deposit. The collapsed slide deposit, called "Gotemba debris avalanche deposit" (Goda), is distributed on the eastern foot of the volcano covering an area of more than 53 km<sup>2</sup> The source amphitheater is not preserved because it became covered by younger tephra erupted from the summit crater. This avalanche deposit is overlain by the "Gotemba, mudflow deposits" (Gomf) emplaced repeatedly after the avalanche. Some now units of the Goda and Gomf entered pre-existing rivers and were finally emplaced as fluvial deposits. The Goda is composed of debris-avalanche blocks, showing jigsaw cracks, along with smaller blocks ranging from several tens of centimeters up to l m in diameter. The debris-avalanche matrix is a mixture of smaller nieces of blocks and ash-sized materials due to mainly shearing and fragmentation of large blocks. Igneous rocks include fresh and altered gray basaltic lava, weathered tephra including red scoria and white clay. Petrographical and geochemical data indicate that most blocks were derived from the Older Fuji volcano. The volumes of the Goda and Gomf are about l.05km^3 and 0.71km^3 respectively, based on presently available geological and borehole data. Since the blocks of Goda are composed mostly of the products of the Older Fuji volcano and the older stage lavas of Younger Fuji volcano do not extend to the eastern foot of Fuji volcano, a bulge of Older Fuji volcano must have existed in the eastern flank of Fuji volcano preventing the older stage lavas to now to the east. This bulge collapsed in the form of three blocks from the foot of the mountain. The abundance of hydrothermally altered deposits in the Goda and the absence of fresh volcanic products within the Goda suggest its origin as a rupture inside the altered deposits possibly triggered by a large earthquake or phreatic eruption.

We consider an intelligence as computation and classify it by the way its specifications are given. Based on this classification, we argue that it is difficult to design a human-like intelligence. Then, we discuss the possibility of non-human-like intelligence. We also touch on the necessity of the study of human intelligence from the social point of view.

Feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) causes a severe, immune-mediated disease called FIP in domestic and wild cats. It is unclear whether FIP transmits from cat to cat through the oral route of FIPV infection, and the reason for this includes that FIP is caused by oral inoculation with some FIPV strains (e.g., type II FIPV WSU 79-1146), but is not caused by other FIPV (e.g., type I FIPV KU-2 strain: FIPV-I KU-2). In this study, when cats passively immunized with anti-FIPV-I KU-2 antibodies were orally inoculated with FIPV-I KU-2, FIP was caused at a 50% probability, i.e., FIPV not causing FIP through oral infection caused FIP by inducing antibody-dependent enhancement. Many strains of type I FIPV do not cause FIP by inoculation through the oral route in cats. Based on the findings of this study, type I FIPV which orally infected cats may cause FIP depending on the condition.

Huge amounts of radionuclides were released into the atmosphere and ocean from the Fuku shima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), as a result of the reactor accident after the magnitude 9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent gigantic tsunami on March 11, 2011. This paper summarizes our research activities on measurements of actinide elements (236U, 238,239,240,241Pu, 241Am and 242,243,244Cm) in the environmental samples.

Background: Suicide amidst the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is an important issue. In Japan, the number of suicides in April 2020 decreased by nearly 20% from that in 2019. To assess the impact of an infectious disease pandemic, excess mortality is often discussed. Our main purpose was evaluating excess mortality from suicide in Japan during the early pandemic period.Methods: We used data on suicides collected by the National Police Agency of Japan until June 2020. We estimated excess mortality during the early pandemic period (March–June 2020) using a time-series model of the number of suicides before the pandemic. A quasi-Poisson model was employed for the estimation. We evaluated excess mortalities by the categories of age and sex, and prefectures.Results: No significant excess mortality was observed throughout the early pandemic; instead, a downward trend in the number of suicides for both sexes was noted. For males, negative values of excess mortalities below the lower bound of the 95% prediction interval were observed in April and May. All numbers of females during the period were included in the interval, and the excess mortalities in June were positive and higher than those in April and May. In Tokyo, the number of suicides was below the lower bound throughout the period.Conclusion: Our results suggest that various changes such as communication, and social conditions amid the early COVID-19 pandemic induced a decrease in suicides in Japan. However, continuous monitoring is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of the pandemic on suicides.

Recently Web-based/online psychological studies have been reported, in which web browsers familiarized by participants such as Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, and Google Chrome are used for presenting stimuli and recording responses. The present article summarizes advantages and disadvantages of conducting Web-based experiments, and provide brief explanations of the knowledge required to create the programs. Technically speaking, it is better to know HTML, CSS, JavaScript (frameworks), and web servers. Web-based studies will be conducted more broadly in psychology because researchers can recruit more efficiently large and diverse samples from crowdsourcing marketplaces than from traditional participant pools.

本研究の課題は,ドイツ中世後期の剣士団体である「マルクス兄弟団」の成立事情,目的と活動,団員の剣術技法,団員の社会的階層を,解明することであった。先行研究の成果を整理し,史料である剣術書と「マルクス兄弟団」関係文書の内容を分析することによって,次の点を明らかにした。(1)マルクス兄弟団は1487年に皇帝フリードリヒ3世より「特権状」を獲得した。(2)目的と活動の重点は,当初の宗教的相互扶助から,16世紀後半にはツンフト的権利擁護に移行した。(3)団員の剣術技法は,14世紀後半のJ.リーヒテナウエルの技法を遵守していた。(4)団員の社会的階層は,貴族や商人ではなく,大部分が手工業者であった。

焙煎によるコーヒー豆の有機酸とpHの変化を検討した結果。(1) コーヒーの有機酸のブチルエステルをガスクロマトグラフィーで分析して,ギ酸,酢酸,乳酸,グライコール酸,レヴリン酸,シュウ酸,マロン酸,コハク酸,リンゴ酸およびクエン酸を同定した。(2) 焙煎により有機酸はそれぞれ変動するが,特にギ酸と酢酸の増減が著しい。(3) 焙煎中,遊離酸量はメディアムで最高となった後減少し,pHもこれに応じて変動するが,総酸量はほとんど最後まで増加を続ける。(4) メディアム以降,かなりの量の有機酸が黒褐色多孔性のコーヒー豆組織に吸着される。
