Recent fossil finds have complicated the picture of East Asian Late Pleistocene hominin taxonomy and morphology, necessitating analysis of more fossils with secure dates and stratigraphic contexts to better contextualize human evolution during this epoch. Field excavations at the Laoya Cave in Guizhou Province, China in 2013 recovered two isolated human teeth (M3 and dm2). The teeth date from ~21–24 kya, according to AMS radiocarbon dating. The present study provides detailed metric and non-metric descriptions of the Laoya teeth, and compares them with the dentition of other Late Pleistocene hominins (Neanderthals and fossil Homo sapiens from around the world) as well as chronologically earlier fossil hominins from the same geographical area (East Asian Early/Middle Pleistocene hominins). To achieve this, descriptive morphological observations, geometric morphometric analysis, and micro-computed tomography were employed. The lower third molar (LYC1) is characterized by several derived features, including the absence of a hypoconulid, the lack of C6 and C7, and an ‘X’-type cuspal arrangement. The combination of traits expressed by LYC1 is unique, but very similar to other recent H. sapiens. However, the LYC1 also displays a suite of dental features that are not common in other East Asian Late Pleistocene fossil H. sapiens: the absence of a hypoconulid, the presence of a middle trigonid crest, and a narrowed talonid relative to trigonid. This study of the Laoya teeth expands the known morphological diversity of East Asian Late Pleistocene hominin dentitions, and will contribute to a better understanding of the history of modern humans in this area.

試験は, プロペラの回転方向として, 内回りと外回りの2つについて実施し比較した。試験結果をまとめると次の通りである。1. 内回りプロペラにおいては, 船尾が岸壁から離れ難く, 横移動が不能となる場合もある。外回りプロペラにおいては, 横力が明らかに大きいようであり, 船尾が岸壁から離れ易い。横移動が不能となることはない。2. プロペラ回転数の組み合わせをDS/S, S/Hと変化させても, 内回りプロペラ装備船の離岸性能の改善効果はほとんど見られない。同様に, 右舷舵角を0, ±35degと3種類変更させても, 離岸性能改善に大きな効果はない。3. 船の初期位置を岸壁からは離れたところに持ってくると, 横移動は容易となる。Fig.4に横移動試験結果の1例を示す。船影は10sec毎の右から左に動く模型船の位置を表している。内回りプロペラ (Inward) においては船がほとんど横に移動していないこと, 外回りプロペラ (Outward) においては所期の通り船尾が岸壁から離れた後で横方向へ移動していることが分かる。

Body analogy is an operation that links spatial cognition with the sensorimotor systems. Previous studies on mental rotation have shown that adding a head at the top of stimulus cubes or imitating human posture improves mental rotation performance results. On the other hand, mental rotation performance tends to be better in males than females. In this study, we tested sex differences in the effects of body analogy on a mental rotation task. The task was to judge whether the stimulus from a pair of cubes was the same or not; we added faces to the cubes or imitated human posture with cubes. The results revealed that body analogy was useful for both males and females but the effect was greater for females. However, additional correlation analyses indicated that this effect was at least partly due to the differences in abilities required for mental rotation, rather than sex differences. These results suggest that body analogy can compensate for weaknesses in spatial cognition.

This paper considers changes in basketball shooting techniques from the Taisho Era (1912-1926) through the first half of the Showa Era (1926-1989), focusing on technique history with special reference to the process of introduction of the one-hand shot. The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows. 1. From the Taisho Era to the early Showa Era, a chest shot using both hands was the main technique for shooting from middle and long distances. This technique was used as it was thought to be difficult to block. Eventually, however, defects of this shooting technique were pointed out, including a low rate of scoring. As for short-distance shooting techniques, these were thought to be divided into those where a shot was released after the player had made a stop, and a “running” shot. In the early Showa period, both of these were made with a one-hand shot, as this meant a higher possibility of scoring and avoiding defensive maneuvers. 2. The one-hand shot from middle and long distances was introduced in the early 1945-1954 period as an American technique. However, it was thought that it would be difficult for short-height Japanese to master this technique. In 1950, however, a Hawaiian “Nisei” (second-generation Japanese-American) team having the same body proportions as native Japanese visited Japan and demonstrated the one-hand shooting technique. This suggested that Japanese persons, too, would be able to acquire this technique. In Japan after the visit of the Hawaiian team, use of the one-hand shot for middle and long distances became widespread. Compared with the shooting techniques used in Japan previously, as this technique enabled higher scoring and quicker movement, it was characterized as being difficult to defend against, even when the defensive player was close in.

The glucose tolerance was evaluated in 136 nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients without overt diabetes mellitus. All patients underwent liver biopsies and 75-g oral glucose tolerance tests. Plasma glucose and insulin levels were analyzed periodically for 3 h after oral glucose loading. Irrespective of the hemoglobin A1c levels, impaired glucose tolerance, including diabetes mellitus, was detected in 61% of the NAFLD patients. While the secretion pattern of glucose after glucose loading was similar among the NAFLD patients, postprandial insulin levels increased in parallel with the aggravation of histological findings (fibrosis stages and NAFLD activity scores). In conclusion, the present data shows the importance of performing the glucose tolerance test in NAFLD patients without overt diabetes mellitus.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate whether gaze stabilization exercise derives sensory reweighting of vestibular for upright postural control. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-three healthy volunteers participated in this study. The center of pressure of the total trajectory length was measured before (pre), immediately after (post), and 10 min after (post10) gaze stabilization exercise, in the static standing position, with the eyes open or closed, on the floor or on foam rubber. The sensory contribution values of the visual, somatosensory, and vestibular systems were calculated using center of pressure of the total trajectory length value in these measuring conditions. [Results] The center of pressure of the total trajectory length on foam rubber in post and post10 were significantly lower than that in the pre. The sensory contribution values of vestibular in post10 stages were significantly higher than that in pre-stage. [Conclusion] Gaze stabilization exercise can improve the static body balance in a condition that particularly requires vestibular function. The possible mechanism involves increasing sensory contribution of the vestibular system for postural control by the gaze stabilization exercise, which may be useful to derive sensory reweighting of the vestibular system for rehabilitation.

The Clothoid is a curve which has linearly changing curvature in relation to the length of the curve. By choosing the curve as the interpolating curve between freely given 2-dimensional point series, we can obtain a smooth free curve. In this report a practical method of Clothoidal interpolation, called "tangent method", is mentioned. The algorithm of the method is derived and some examples are shown.

We compared two ionization methods, matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and nanoparticle assisted laser desorption/ionization (Nano-PALDI) mass spectrometry (MS), for the analysis of amino acids derivatized with Py-Tag™ that consists pyrylium-based compound. Py-Tag is a useful stable derivatization reagent due to wide mass differences (using 13C as the sole stable labelling isotope). For Py-Tag labelled lysine, sensitive signals that showed less noise with a ten times higher sensitivity, showed a wider mass difference by Nano-PALDI MS compared to MALDI MS.

本稿の目的は, 1992年11月に出版された『社会学の宇宙』 (川崎賢一・藤村正之 (共編), 恒星社厚生閣) という社会学テキストがどのように編集・出版されたのかを, 編者自身がその当時に考えていたことにできる限り忠実に, 紹介することである.その当時は, バブル経済崩壊直後の日本社会にあって, 社会学教育自体にも変革の波が押し寄せようとしていた.その波への1つの回答として, 編者たちが念頭に置いたのは, 大まかにいうと, 従来考えられていた〈教養としての社会学〉から, 〈普通に使える社会学〉あるいは〈DIY (Do It Yourself) の社会学〉へ, 大きくその方向を変えることを目指そうということであった.その意図がうまくいったかどうかはわからないが, 少なくとも, その後の社会学のテキストはさまざまな種類のテキストが出版されるようになった.その意味で, われわれのテキストが果たした何がしかの役割があったのではなかろうか.

[Purpose] In sports physical therapy, video of a patient’s movement or of a skilled model’s movement has been used as observational learning methods for injury prevention and movement modification. Positive effects of model video observation have been reported. This study aimed to clarify the effect on motor skill learning using a combination of model-observation and self-observation, which is thought to act as an enhanced method for active error detection by comparing model-observation and self-observation alone for acquisition of correct sports movement. [Subjects and Methods] Forty-five healthy females were randomly allocated into three groups comprising model- and self-observation, model-observation, and self-observation. The motor task performed was a half golf swing using an elastic club. Shoulder grip angle between both shoulder lines and the acromia grip strength were measured as an index of body rotation using a three-dimensional motion analyzer. Change in the shoulder grip angle in the three groups was analyzed at pre-, immediate delayed retention, and delayed retention tests. [Results] A significant difference in shoulder grip angle was observed among the three groups for the immediate delayed retention test. The combined model and self-observation group had a value closer to 90 degrees compared to the other two groups. [Conclusion] Observation combining model and self-observation exerted a positive effect on short-term motor skill learning.

Welder's pneumoconiosis, which is caused by the inhalation of welding fumes, is one of the major pneumoconioses in Japan. The major component of welding fumes is iron oxide. Although welder's pneumoconiosis has been considered to be inert, recent reports revealed the possibility of developing fibrosis. In this article, we demonstrate radiological and pathological features of welder's pneumoconiosis, and also review the mechanisms of developing pulmonary fibrosis. In high-resolution CT (HRCT), typical welder's pneumoconiosis shows fine centrilobular nodules in both lung fields. In some cases, fibrotic changes may be seen in subpleural areas in both lower lung fields. Lung biopsy specimens show numerous hemosiderin-laden macrophages within alveolar spaces associated with mild to moderate interstitial fibrosis. The mechanisms of developing fibrosis can be explained by “overload phenomenon”. Namely, in cases of mild exposure to welding fumes, iron oxides and hemosiderin-laden macrophages locate within air-spaces and may be reduced in numbers by mucociliary transport system. However, in cases of massive inhalation, accumulation of iron oxides and hemosiderin-laden macrophages exceed the capacity of mucociliary transport system. As a result, they invade into the interstitium and cause interstitial inflammation or thickening and eventually pulmonary fibrosis.

事業のグローバル化等,事業環境の急速な変化に対応するために,知財担当業務の拡大,知財サービスの品質向上が求められるようになり,これに伴い知財業務のリソース配分見直しが必要になった。このような環境下,知財業務の1つである特許侵害調査業務では,侵害リスク軽減と調査負荷軽減を共に満足する「経済的な調査手法」について検討した。公報抽出時の母集合を機械的に縮小する手法を整理したことで,それぞれの手法で縮小可能な規模とこれにより生じるリスクが見えてきた。本稿では,調査範囲を爆発的に膨らませずに侵害リスク回避に寄与する集合作成手法と,ここで必要な検索システムの機能を紹介する。

本研究の目的は,学習意欲が定期試験成績に及ぼす効果を調べるものである。対象は,当学院理学療法学科2年生,昼間コース学生41名および夜間コース学生40名とする。ここで,学習意欲要因としては,外発的動機づけ・内発的動機づけ・健康度(特に精神的健康度)・対人関係・学院への適応度の5つを挙げた。次に,これらの学習意欲が定期試験成績に及ぼす効果について調べた。結果としては,夜間コース学生において学院への適応度と定期試験成績との間に正の関係が見られた。よって,今後の学生指導としては,担任を中心として学生がクラスや学院に馴染めるような配慮を積極的に行っていく必要があると考える。加えて,授業方法の工夫も考慮していきたいと考える。
