The taste-modifying protein miraculin (MIR) has received increasing interest as a new low-calorie sweetener. In our previous study using the tomato variety ‘Micro-Tom,’ it was shown that in transgenic tomatoes in which MIR was expressed by using the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter (p35S) and a heat shock protein terminator (tHSP) cassette (p35S-MIR-tHSP), higher levels of miraculin accumulated than when MIR was driven by the nopaline synthase terminator (tNOS) cassette (p35S-MIR-tNOS). ‘Micro-Tom’ is a dwarf tomato used for research and shows a low yield. To achieve high productivity of MIR, it is essential to improve the MIR accumulation potential by using high-yielding cultivars. In this study, we evaluate whether the high MIR accumulation trait mediated by the tHSP appears even when fruit size increases. A line in which the p35S-MIR-tHSP cassette was introduced into a high-yielding variety was bred by backcrossing. The line homozygous for MIR showed higher accumulation of MIR than the heterozygous line. Despite large differences in fruit size, the MIR level in the backcross line was similar to that in the p35S-MIR-tHSP line (background ‘Micro-Tom’). It was approximately 3.1 times and 4.0 times higher than those in miracle fruits and the p35S-MIR-tNOS tomato line 5B (‘Moneymaker’ background, which exhibits the highest miraculin productivity achieved thus far), respectively. These results demonstrate that the high MIR accumulation trait mediated by the tHSP appears even when fruit size is increased.

In order to realize a power assisting suit for assisting a nurse caring a patient is her arm, a hardness sensor of muscle using load cell and a pneumatic rotary actuator utilizing pressure cuffs have been developed. The power assisting suit consists of shoulders, arms waist and legs made of aluminum, and is fitted on the nurse body. The power assisting suit was originated with the concept of a master and slave system in one body. The arms, waist and legs have the pneumatic rotary actuators. The pneumatic rotary actuators construct with pressure cuffs sandwiched between thin plates. The action of the arms, waist and legs of the nurse were sensed with the muscle hardness sensor utilizing load cell with diaphragm mounted a sensing tip. The dent of the sensing tip corresponds to the hardness of the muscle so that exerting muscle force produces electric signal. This paper gives the design and characteristics of the power assisting suit using the cuff type pneumatic rotary actuators and the muscle hardness sensor verifying its practicability.

A multi-disciplinary synthesis was made on the tectonics and seismotectonics in the northwestern Sagami Bay and adjacent areas, where the plate boundary between the Izu-Bonin and Northeast Japan arcs passes and historical M7-8 inter-and intraplate earthquakes frequentlyhave occurred.In a convergent boundary between plates, a displacement between plates is usually accommodatedalong a broad belt of active imbricated thrusts and folds, which develop in a wedge ofan overriding plate. In such a situation, we can easily identify two kinds of plate boundaries: a deformation front and a subduction entrance. The deformation front is a line connecting thethrusts or folds nearest to a trench/trough axis. The subduction entrance is a line connecting theedges of trench/trough filling coarse deposits, which cover a surface of a subducting plate. In Sagami Bay, the deformation front in the overriding Northeast Japan arc is estimated to belocated along the northern and eastern edges of the Sagami Basin, while the subductionentrance of the subducting Izu-Bonin arc is estimated to be located along the southern edge of the Basin.Many geomorphological, geological, geophysical observations need and support the existenceof the West Sagami Bay Fracture (WSBF), an intraplate propagating fracture between the Izu-Bonin outer and inner arcs, proposed by Ishibashi (1988), whereas these observations require slightmodification of the estimated geometry around the WSBF. Frequent dike intrusions in theHigashi Izu monogenetic volcano field cause spreading of the upper crust and probably move the Manazuru “microplate”(MNZ) to the NNE direction against the Izu block. The Tanna-Hirayama tectonic line is proposed as a transform fault, which accomodates the relativemovement between the MNZ and the Izu block. In the MNZ hypothesis, the Kozu-Matsuda fault, located to the northeast of the Izu Peninsula, is interpreted as a deformation front between theoverriding Northeast Japan arc and the MNZ, which is buoyantly subducting beneath the Oiso Hilland Tanzawa Mountains. The proposed new geometry around the WSBF and the hypothesis of the MNZ can explain (1) the crustal structure and tectonic features around the Kozu-Matsudafault, (2) tectonic implication of the “Oiso-type” earthquakes, which are expected to displacethe Kozu-Matsuda fault periodically, and (3) the rapid upheaval of the Tanzawa Mountains since 1Ma.

疫学は,集団の健康状態を把握することに加え,健康の決定要因を探求することも重要なテーマとしている.近年,社会疫学により,社会階層や所得格差といった健康の社会的決定要因についての研究が進められ,階層間の健康格差が存在することは今や「確固たる事実」として認識され,様々な保健政策に応用されている.しかし,社会と健康との関係についての研究のアプローチについては,疫学とその他の社会科学とで異なる場合がよくあり,しばしば論争が行われてきた.疫学は疾病や死亡といった不健康の発生を予防する公衆衛生活動のツールであるという実学としての側面が強いことがその理由の一つとだと思われる.また,疾病の発生に関する生物学的・社会的なメカニズムが非常に複雑であることもその理由の一つであろう.社会の諸事象と健康との関連を扱う研究は,疫学をはじめとした医学系の研究者と社会科学者とによる共同作業で進めるべきであろう.

「健康日本21(第2次)」で,「健康格差の縮小」とソーシャル・キャピタル(地域のつながり)など「社会環境の質の向上」が明示され,介護予防でも地域診断に基づく地域づくりへの重視が謳われるようになった。しかし欧米に比べ我が国ではそれらに必要な「見える化」が遅れている。これらの課題に取り組むため厚生労働科学研究費補助金などで組織されたJAGES(Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study,日本老年学的評価研究)プロジェクトの取り組みを紹介し「見える化」の可能性と課題を考察することが小論の目的である。本研究プロジェクトでは,まず先行研究レビューに基づきベンチマークの必要性や限界・課題,政策評価ベンチマーク指標群の枠組みと指標選択基準,要介護リスクと保護要因などについてまとめた。次に全国31市町村との共同研究により,要介護認定を受けていない10万人超の高齢者のデータベースを構築して指標群を作成し,保険者にフィードバックするベンチマーク・システムを開発した。さらに縦断研究で解明されたリスク要因や保護的要因,応用研究としての介入研究などに基づく指標群の妥当性の検証などを行った。考察では,行政と研究者の共同の仕組みやデータベース,ベンチマーク・システム開発の多面的な意義と,ベンチマーク指標の妥当性の検証など今後の課題について述べた。健康格差と健康の社会的決定要因の「見える化」による効果的・効率的・公正な介護政策のために総合的なベンチマーク・システムのプロトタイプを開発し,社会保障領域における大規模データ活用の可能性と課題を考察した。

The infrastructure management of Japan has problems in both sides of supply and demand. In the demand side, the problems exist in the overseas relocation of industrial activities and also the decrease in population. In the supply side, on the other hand, the problem is the high renewal costs of the aging infrastructure. It is actualizing especially in the local area. The infrastructure management is required in a timely manner. The time management is an important viewpoint in that case. It is required to practice optimization of an infrastructure level in accordance with the demand, and it is important to disclose related the infrastructure information for that purpose.

不飽和ポリエステル樹脂は, 1953年に国産化されて以来, ボタン, 化粧板などの非FRP用, 住宅機材, 舟艇, タンク, 工業部品などのFRP用マトリックス樹脂として広範に用いられ, 生産高は1988年に過去最高の23万トンに達した。約80%を占めるFRP用においては, 成形法も従来のハンドレイアップを中心とした成形法から加熱加圧成形法への移行が年々強まりマトリックス樹脂もこれに適した開発が行われている。さらに複合材としての高機能化に対応すべくエポキシ樹脂, ウレタン樹脂, アクリル樹脂との境界領域における樹脂開発が自動車分野への応用を目的として行われている。FRP用を中心に, 不飽和ポリエステル樹脂およびその周辺樹脂の高機能化について最近の技術動向を述べる。

This paper considers cultural translations and adaptations in Meiji-era Japan. It places the focus on San’yūtei Enchō’s Ezonishiki Kokyō no Iezuto (Foreign Brocade as a Souvenir of Ezo-region, 1886–87) based on Wilkie Collins’ The New Magdalen (1872–73). Ezonishiki is a story of Rakugo, a type of traditional one-person oral storytelling, adapted by Enchō, who was the principal Rakugo performer and author of his day. He is still well known as the father of the modern Japanese language due to the impact of his spoken style on the Vernacular Movement.Reflecting the general socio-cultural trend towards Westernization, adaptations of Western fiction found their way into the Japanese publishing sphere. They modified the foreign to fit domestic sensibilities, often changing Western characters and settings into Japanese. Enchō adapted various Western literary works to suit his audience’s narrative appetites. He transformed Collins’ original story about Victorian social discrimination against a fallen woman into a story about those who were against the Hinin class, which consisted of actors, beggars, and others regarded by feudal Japan as the most socially inferior. This paper also enquires into the following questions: how English-illiterate Enchō learned the original story, what kind of role Enchō took in popularizing Western literature, and what he thought about the Westernization policy promoted by the Meiji government.
