Capsizing is one of the worst scenarios in oceangoing vessels. It could lead to a high number of fatalities. A considerable number of studies have been conducted until the 1980s, and one of the discoveries is the weather criterion established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In the past, one of the biggest difficulties in revealing the behavior of ship-roll motion was the nonlinearity of the governing equation. On the other hand, after the mid-1980s, the complexity of the capsizing problem was uncovered with the aid of computers. In this study, we present the theoretical backgrounds of the capsizing problem from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics. Then, we discuss the theoretical conditions and mechanisms of the bifurcations of periodic solutions and numerical attempts for the bifurcations and capsizing.

The polyps of Koellikerina bouilloni Kawamura and Kubota, 2005 were discovered growing on the shell of the gastropod Nassarius festivus (Powys, 1835) collected from Isozaki, Hitachinaka, Ibaraki, Japan. This hydrozoan species was so far known only from the medusae collected in Tanabe Bay, Wakayama, Japan (type locality) and Papua New Guinea. The discovery of the polyp and the rearing of the medusae permitted us to complement the description of this species.

The diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis is frequently delayed because histological confirmation is often challenging. Few studies have attempted to clarify the utility and safety of abdominal fat pad fine-needle aspiration (FPFNA) for an initial screening test in patients with suspected cardiac amyloidosis.This study included 77 consecutive patients with suspected non-ischemic cardiomyopathy who had left ventricular dysfunction and/or hypertrophy. All patients underwent abdominal FPFNA and an endomyocardial biopsy. In all patients, the abdominal FPFNA could be performed within less than 5 minutes with no complications; however, in 1 patient (1.3%), the obtained specimen was too small to evaluate. Among the remaining 76 patients, 5 (6.6%) were positive for amyloid (FPFNA[+]) and 7 (9.2%), including the 5 FPFNA[+], were diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis (AL = 1, ATTR = 6) by endomyocardial biopsy. Positive abdominal FPFNAs indicated cardiac amyloidosis with high accuracy (sensitivity, 71.4%; specificity, 100%).Positive abdominal FPFNAs are directly linked to diagnoses of cardiac amyloidosis. Abdominal FPFNA is simple and useful for the initial screening test for cardiac amyloidosis in patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy.

This paper discusses policy issues “in” cyberworlds, rather than “on” them. Many virtual worlds, online games and other online communities, develop their own value and exchange system, and the virtual economies have become increasingly important to our real lives. But since virtual economies have different characteristics from the real ones, we need to think about how to manage these economies ac- cordingly. In this paper the basic structure of these games and propose policy measures to counter important in-game problems are analyzed. In addition, a growing trend toward interaction among virtual worlds is viewed as emergence of “international economy.”

The role of vitamin E in the endocrine system, in particular the pituitary-gonadal axis, was studied in humans and male rats by examining the hormonal differences between vitamin E deficient and supplemented conditions.In vitamin E deficient rats, pituitary content and basal plasma level of FSH and LH were significantly lower than those of the control rats, but testicular content and basal plasma level of testosterone were not significantly changed.On the other hand, in vitamin E supplemented rats, FSH and LH content in pituitary tissue was significantly higher than that of the controls, but there was no significant rise in basal FSH and LH level in plasma. The testosterone level was significantly elevated in both testicular tissue and plasma. It was also demonstrated that basal plasma testosterone and F. T. I. were increased in normal male subjects following oral vitamin E administration and the responsiveness of plasma testosterone levels to HCG was significantly higher during vitamin E administration than before administration.These results suggest that vitamin E may play an important and potent role in hormone production in the pituitary-gonadal axis in humans and rats.

At the end of 2019, pneumonia caused by novel coronavirus 2019 (nCoV) emerged in Wuhan city, China. Many airline travelers moved between Wuhan and Japan at that time, suggesting that Japan is at high risk of invasion by the virus. Diagnostic systems for 2019-nCoV were developed with urgency. Two nested RT–PCR assays and two real-time RT–PCR assays were adapted to local Japanese conditions. As of 8 February 2020, the assays developed have successfully detected 25 positive cases of infection in Japan.

Objectives: The Health Sciences Evidence-Based Practice (HS-EBP) questionnaire was recently developed for measuring five constructs of evidence-based clinical practice among Spanish health professionals by applying content and construct validity investigation. The current study aims to undertake a cross-cultural adaptation of the HS-EBP into Japanese and to investigate the internal consistency and test–retest reliability of the Japanese HS-EBP among undergraduate students of nursing and physical and occupational therapies.Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation was undertaken by following Beaton’s five-step process. Subsequently, the Japanese HS-EBP test–retest reliability was assessed with a 2-week interval. Participants were recruited from among third and fourth grade undergraduate students of nursing and physical and occupational therapies with clinical training experience.Results: Pilot testing included 30 participants (11 nursing students, 11 physical therapy students, 8 occupational therapy students). Consequently, we developed the Japanese HS-EBP to be understandable for undergraduate students of nursing and physical and occupational therapies. Data from 52 participants who completed test–retest reliability questionnaires demonstrated adequate test–retest reliability in the total scores of Domains 1, 3, 4, and 5 [intraclass correlation coefficients were (ICC)=0.74, 0.70, 0.75, and 0.74, respectively]; the exception was Domain 2, which had an ICC of 0.66. Internal consistency (Cronbach’s α) was adequate for Domains 1–5, for which α was 0.87, 0.94, 0.86, 0.93, and 0.95, respectively.Conclusions: This study developed the Japanese version of HS-EBP and provided preliminary evidence of adequate internal consistency and test–retest reliability in most domains for undergraduate students of nursing and physical and occupational therapies.

The tornadic debris signatures (TDSs) of the Ichihara Tornado associated with Typhoon Hagibis (2019) were observed using two operational C-band dual-polarimetric weather radars and an X-band phased-array weather radar (PAWR). This TDS observation was the first to be made over Japan in a typhoon environment. The TDS bins spread over time, and the maximum vertical and aerial extents reached 2.4 km and 9.41 km2, respectively. The estimated rise velocity of the TDS was 8 m s−1. The first TDS was detected ∼1 min before damage reporting began. The TDSs became clearer along with the rotational velocity of the near-surface vortex detected by PAWR. The copolar correlation coefficient reached a minimum (0.27) ∼1 min after the tornado passed the most severely damaged area and increased gradually over 4 min. This suggests that heavy and/or dense debris was lofted and immediately fell out and/or diffused, whereas light debris remained aloft for ≥ 4 min. By comparing the PAWR-detected vortex signatures with aerial photographs, we inferred that the first TDS comprised vegetated debris, the clearest TDS mainly comprised destroyed manmade structures. These results indicate that TDS detection is effective both for investigating damage and for recognizing tornado's occurrence even in a typhoon environment.

Background: In-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) is an important issue, but data in Japan are limited. Methods and Results: To investigate in-hospital CPA, we conducted a prospective multicenter observational registry of in-hospital CPA and resuscitation in Japan (J-RCPR). During January 2008 to December 2009, patients were registered from 12 participating hospitals. All patients, visitors and employees within the facility campus who experience a cardiopulmonary resuscitation event defined as either a pulseless or a pulse with inadequate perfusion requiring chest compressions and/or defibrillation of ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT) were registered. Data were collected in 6 major categories of variables: facility data, patient demographic data, pre-event data, event data, outcome data, and quality improvement data. Data for 491 adults were analyzed. The prevalence of pulseless VT/VF as first documented rhythm was 28.1%, asystole was 29.5% and pulseless electrical activity was 41.1%. Immediate causes of event were arrhythmia 30.6%, acute respiratory insufficiency 26.7%, and hypotension 15.7%. Return of spontaneous circulation was 64.7%; the proportion of survival 24h after CPA was 49.8%, the proportion of survival to hospital discharge was 27.8% and proportion of favorable neurological outcome at 30 days was 21.4%. Conclusions: This is the first report of the registry for in-hospital CPA in Japan and shows that the registry provides important observational data. (Circ J 2011; 75: 815-822)

In 2018, Takita et al. proposed a construction method of a fake QR code by adding stains to a target QR code, that probabilistically leads users to a malicious website. The construction abused the error-correction of error-correcting code used in the QR code, namely, the added stains induce decoding errors in black and white detection by a camera, so that the decoded URL leads to the malicious website. Also, the same authors proposed a detection method against such fake QR codes by comparing decoded URLs among multiple QR code readings since the decoded URLs may differ because of its probabilistic property. However, the detection method cannot work well over a few readings. Moreover, the proposed detection method does not consider the environmental or accidental changes such as sudden sunshine or reflection, nor recognizes the fake QR code as non-fake when the probability is low. This paper proposes new detection methods for such fake QR codes by analyzing information obtained from the error-correcting process. This paper also reports results from implementing the new detection methods on an Android smartphone. Results show that a combination of these detection methods works very well compared to when using only a single detection method.

Several epidemiological studies have shown that the prevalence of ischemic heart disease is higher in occupational drivers than in people with other occupations. Although occupation categories can be surrogate measures for coronary risk factors, the relationships between taxi driving and severity of coronary heart disease (CHD) has not been investigated. Even more important, the contribution of risk factors to the severity of CHD in taxi drivers remains unclear. Our study tested the hypothesis that taxi driving could be associated with the severity of CHD. We also examined the relation between this occupation and risk factors and social lifestyle. We analyzed the coronary angiograms of 57 consecutive male taxi driver patients and compared them with those of 215 ageadjusted male non-taxi-driver patients. The number of diseased vessels and risk factors were compared between two groups. The prevalence of myocardial infarction and multi-vessel disease was higher in the taxi-driver patients than in the non-taxi-driver patients. The taxi-driver patients had higher prevalence of body mass index (BMI), diabetes, and smoking, higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and lower levels of apolipoprotein AI (ApoAI). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that multi-vessel disease was associated with BMI and diabetes mellitus in taxi-driver patients. The taxi-driver patients were characterized by more extensive coronary atherosclerosis associated with higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus and obesity. These characteristics may be explained by in part their working environment.

BACKGROUND: Few epidemiologic studies have examined the association between the rate of eating and obesity. In this study, we cross-sectionally examined the association of the self-reported rate of eating with current Body Mass Index (BMI), and BMI-change from 20 years of age to the current age.METHODS: Subjects were 3737 male (mean age ± standard deviation and mean BMI ± standard deviation: 48.2 ± 7.1 years and 23.3 ± 2.7 kg/m2) and 1005 female (46.3 ± 7.0 years and 21.8 ± 2.8 kg/m2) Japanese civil servants. We measured self-reported categorical rate of eating, current BMI, BMI at age 20, and BMI-change from age 20. Energy intake was assessed over a 1-month period with a brief-type diet history questionnaire.RESULTS: The multiple regression analysis in which the current BMI was regressed by categorical rate of eating, energy intake, age, and lifestyle factors showed that current BMI steadily increased by -0.99, -0.67, 0.81, and 1.47 kg/m2 along with the progress of categorical rate of eating from the 'medium' group to 'very slow', 'relatively slow', 'relatively fast', and 'very fast' groups, respectively, in men. In women, the corresponding values were -1.06, -0.35, 0.50, and 1.34 kg/m2. When the BMI increment from age 20 to current age was regressed in the same manner, the increment was -0.63, -0.34, 0.57, and 1.05 kg/m2 in men and -0.71, -0.32, 0.34, and 1.14 kg/m2 in women, respectively. Additionally, both BMI at age 20 and current height were positively associated with rate of eating.CONCLUSIONS: Our results among middle-aged men and women suggest that eating fast would lead to obesity.J Epidemiol 2006; 16: 117-124.

A rare copepod parasitic on marine fish, Luetkenia elongata Shiino, 1963 (Siphonostomatoida: Pandaridae), is redescribed based on type specimens and additional specimens obtained from Luvarus imperialis Rafinesque, 1810 caught in the eastern and western North Pacific Ocean off California and Japan, respectively. This represents the first record of this parasite from Japanese waters. The copepod differs from its sole congener, L. asterodermi Claus, 1864, by following features of the female: fourth pedigerous somite with one pair of elongate posterolateral lobes; genital complex bearing a pair of well-developed posterolateral lobes with one conical protuberance on lateral corner; abdomen clearly longer than wide; and caudal rami more than 2.0 times longer than wide.

Onco-cardiology, a new academic field, aims to improve the quality of life and prognosis of cancer patients and survivors with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). With the aging of the population, an epidemic of cancer with CVD is emerging in developed countries. Cancer and CVD share risk factors, pathophysiology, treatments, and preventive and rehabilitative measures. A multidisciplinary team-based approach is needed to support cancer treatment to maximize its effectiveness and minimize its cardiotoxic potential. Basic and clinical onco-cardiology are already being practiced harmoniously. However, systematization in academia and clinical practice and accumulation of evidence have just started. In this review, we present the epidemiology, common risk factors between cancer and CVD, future epidemic of CVD in patients with cancer, and the necessity for an onco-cardiological approach to managing the burden of CVD in cancer patients and survivors.

In this study, we conducted a domain-integrated vorticity budget analysis to quantitatively understand the developing mechanism of the Arctic Cyclone (AC) in August 2016 (AC16). The results showed that the vorticity enhancement of the AC16 was dominated by the horizontal flux convergence of vorticity at all layers with a maximum near the tropopause. The enhancement near the tropopause was characterized not only by the horizontal supply but also by the vertical transport of vorticity. In the boundary layer within the AC16, the convergence of horizontal winds and the corresponding divergence of vertical winds occurred. In addition, during the merging process, updrafts were dominant in the troposphere due to the structure of the mid-latitude cyclone. These structures caused the upward transport of vorticity to the tropopause, which is considered as an important internal process of the AC16. However, time-averaged vorticity budget during the developing stage indicated that the vertical flux term and the divergence term compensate with each other. As a result, it was concluded that the AC is excited and maintained by the merging of the vortices associated with the migrating mid-latitude cyclone and polar vortex.
