Precipitation efficiency (PE) is a useful concept for estimating precipitation under a given environmental condition. PE is used in various situations in meteorology: to evaluate severe precipitation associated with a single storm event; as a parameter of cumulus convective parameterization; and to separate clouds and precipitation in climate projection studies. PE has been defined in several ways. In this review, we start with definitions of PE from microscopic and macroscopic perspectives, and provide estimates of PE based on observational and modeling approaches. Then, we review PE in shallow and organized deep convective systems that provide either a conceptual framework or physical constraints on representations of convection in models. Specifically, we focus on the roles of PE in cloud-radiative feedbacks to climate variability. Finally, we argue the usefulness of PE for investigating cloud and precipitation changes in climate projection studies.

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body combined with a small glenoid and a large humeral head. This joint has been thought to be an unstable joint because of its anatomical structure and the recurrence rate from initial dislocations. Our opinion of this joint is that it has most distinguished stabilizing mechanisms for keeping a wide range of motion.1. The first stabilizing mechanismThis mechanism is the bony combination of the radius between the glenoid cavity and the humeral head. The anatomical study showed the radius of a cross section of the glenoid was 16.8 mm and of the humeral head 22 mm. The computation of the maximum permissible kinetic vector that enables the humeral head to be on the glenoid was 43°.2. The second stabilizing mechanismThe second mechanism is the function of the anterior capsule including the inferior glenohumeral ligament.The anterior capsule works involuntary in both its tension and direction as the centripetal force does against the shear force.3. The disadvantages of these two stabilizing mechanismsThe disadvantages of these two stabilizing mechanisms are; - Inefficiency against the increased anterior kinetic vector during the positioning of the upper extremities vertically against the glenoid- The decrease of bony structural intensity compared with other joints such as the hip joint.4. The third stabilizing mechanismThe third stabildzing mechanism is the function of the shoulder girdle.Its first function is the mobility of the scapula working as shock ab s orber against the share force that falls on the glenohumeral joint.The second is the function of the shoulder girdle muscles such as the pectoralis major and the deltoid.In conclusion, therefore, a normal shoulder joint should be the most distinguished joint with these stabilizing mechanisms physically and anatomically maintaining a wide range of motion.

臨床および病理学的に非滲出型の伝染性腹膜炎(FIP)と診断されたネコ7例について病理組織学的に検索した. 病理組織学的変化は滲出型と同じで, 主として腎, 肝, 腸間膜リンパ節, 肺, 脳, 眼に見られる血管炎および壊死をともなう肉芽腫性炎であった. 非惨出型自然例のうち1例の腎由来の材料を接種された12例の仔ネコには, 滲出型(10例), 非滲出型(2例)の両型が発現した. 自然例および伝達例の観察から, 壊死病変に先行して初期には大単核細胞におけるウイルス増殖が注目された.

本稿は、葛谷彩・芝崎厚士編『「国際政治学」は終わったのか――日本からの応答』(ナカニシヤ出版、2018年11月)を俎上に載せ、同書が刊行されたことの意義と残された課題について検討するものである。まずは研究史を踏まえて本書の位置づけを確認し(第2節)、所収された論考に見られた論点を整理する(第3節)。そこから同書で扱われたこと/扱われなかったことを明らかにして、副題に掲げられた「日本からの応答」という切り口について批判的に考察を進めていく(第4節)。この考察を通して、本書では踏み込んで論及されなかった「日本における応答(歴史研究や地域研究における自己省察)」という論点を新たに提示したい。

大正期に世界的規模での流行をみたスペインかぜのわが国における流行過程は,これまで不鮮明であるとされていた.本稿は,その拡散経路を推定しつつ,この点の再検討を行なうことを目的としている.日本帝国死因統計を資料として, 1916年7月~1926年6月の10か年の各月ごとの府県別インフルエンザ死亡率を因子分析にかけた結果, 3つの流行地域が抽出された.それによると,第1因子は西日本地域,第2因子は都市地域,第3因子は東日本地域を識別していることがわかった.そして,因子得点間のクロス相関から3つの流行地域の時間的前後関係を検討してみると,スペインかぜは,西日本の主要港湾ならびに横浜港から侵入した可能性のあることが示唆され,その拡散過程において近接効果と階層効果が働いていたことも明らかとなった.以上の分析結果は,従来の通説とは異なり,わが国におけるスペインかぜの流行過程に,一の空間的秩序のあったことを意味するものである.

Running economy is an important factor in determining a performance of a long distance running. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the running economy and the submaximal hopping economy. Twelve long-distance runners performed a submaximal repeated hopping exercise on a force platform at a frequency of 2.2Hz and the maximum five-repeated rebound jumping (5RJ). Jumping height, contact time, maximum ground reaction force and oxygen intake were recorded during submaximal repeated hopping exercise. In addition, they performed the submaximal running for a distance of 3200m on an outdoor 400m track. Oxygen intake was recorded during the submaximal running. Then running economy (RE = V/VO2) was calculated by using oxygen intake (VO2) and running speeds (V). Hopping economy (HE = h/VO2) was calculated by using oxygen intake (VO2) and average jumping height (h). As a result of this study, we confirmed that a submaximal repeated hopping exercise performed for a ten-minute period was an aerobic exercise and a steady-state exercise. There was a significant positive correlation between RE and HE (r = 0.805, p<0.01). These results suggest that hopping economy is an important factor in running economy. On the other hand, we did not find a significant correlation between HE and 5RJ. Furthermore, between RE and RJ index of the submaximal hopping exercise, a significant positive correlation was found (r = 0.735, p<0.01). Therefore, RE seems to be connected with the Stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) function of the legs. We conclude that the SSC ability of a long distance runner can be evaluated appropriately by using the submaximal repeated hopping exercise of this study.
