1. Necessity of Distinction Between Effect and Function : Both function and effect of mass communication refer to the results (or influeuces) on audience which mass communication brings about. But two concepts are different in terms of dealing with the results. The “effect” is brought to discussion when we examine the results in terms of whether the intent of communicator is realized in audience's response or not. The concept “function, ” on the other, comes across our mind when the results is examined in the light of significance, which it has to the audience. 2. Methodological Problems of Effect Analysis : Effect analysis, in its nature, takes the communicator's intent as a starting point, and analyses the mechanism of effect-making-process, focussing the factors which operate along with the communication process. Most analyses select one factor, and examine the operational mechanism of it, by controlling other factors equall. This method has some difficulties in the applicability to actual mass communication phenomena. For many factors are interwoven in real mass communication process. 3. Effect Analysis in terms of Audience's Response : One of the methods to resolve such a difficulty is to approach the effect by taking audience's responce as a starting point. We can see an example of this method in R. K. Merton's “Mass Persuassion.” This, which tries to analyse the effect-making-process from the clue of audience's response, will provide not a little sugr gestion to the methodology to analyse the function of mass communication, which is distinguished conceptually from effect. For the “function” itself is recognized in terms of audience's responce. 4. Audience Research and Function Analysis : Audience research now deals with not only demographic description of audience, but also their needs and expectations to mass communication. Such a trend clearly relates to function analysis. It is considered that analytical methodology of function on the individual decision will be resulted in this direction. 5. Analysis of Social Function of Mass Communication : Social function is more complex and more difficult than individual function o be analised. But at least I can say that it is necessary to take a certain evaluative standpoint (for example, anomie is less desirable then equilibrium, or it is wrong that minority group satisfy their needs at the expense of majority, etc.). It is hoped that the positivistic method to analise the actual role of mass communication, is constructed in reference to this value standard.

This paper is intend to survey the relation between sociology and communications and to present may own opinion about communication theory. First I'll describe some communication theories focussed on conveyance of meanings. Next I'll claim that sociology needs generative process of meanings. Finally I try to link “agents” with “structure” using the concepts of linguistic terms. It is important for sociologists to pay attention to communication theories because they become cover main fields of sociology more than before.

Numerical simulation of maneuvering of "Naniwa-maru" was performed to clarify the maneuver characteristics in particular with wearing operation. "Naniwa-maru" belongs to a type called Higaki-kaisen, and the Higaki- kaisen is a type of the more generic class of vessels named "Bezai-ship." Bezai-ship are typical Japanese sailing traders in the 18th to the mid-19th century which have different appearance and construction from those of Western tall ships. The present paper shows the numerical simulation of her wearing operation, and the results compared with the measured data. The equations of motion dealt with coupled ship motions of surge, sway, roll and yaw with co-ordinate system using horizontal body axes. The numerical simulation indicates ship response according to the measured time history of rudder angle, and shows the ship trajectory and the sailing state parameters such as heading angle, leeway angle, heel angle and velocity. The calculated results indicated the ship performance very well.

高解像度衛星画像は,数10cmの解像度で地表の詳細な画像を提供するが,高価であることから,地形学的研究には十分利用されてこなかった.パキスタン北部地震発生直後の2005年10月12日,ムザファラバード周辺のイコノス衛星画像がインターネットで無償公開された.さらにその直後,衛星画像の無償閲覧サイトとして注目されているグーグルアースが,被災地域のクイックバード衛星画像の提供を開始した.著者らはこれらの画像を用いて地形変化の判読を行い,撓曲崖,河床の離水,地表地震断層などの断層変位に伴う地形を見いだすことができた.これらの画像は簡易なオルソ化が行われており,実体視ができないことは変位地形の判読に不利であったが,地震前後の画像の比較や,SPOT5などのやや解像度の低い衛星画像の実体視判読などにより,判読を補うことができた.また,日本地理学会災害対応グループのメーリングリストによるオープンな意見交換も変位地形の認定に有益であった.

博物館の情報化はデータベース化からネットワーク化へと進みつつある。複数の博物館が協調してそれぞれの持つ情報を有機的に関連づけていくことができれば、その有用性は計りしれない。この目標の実現のためには複数の技術を組みあわせて運用する必要がある。現在、特に中心的な課題である資料ドキュメンテーション形式の国際標準としてCIDOC CRMの開発が進められている。本稿ではCIDOC CRMの概要と機能を紹介し、相互運用に向けて関連技術のなかでどのように位置付けられるのかを考察する。

自閉症者の認知のしくみを理解する研究は、近年めざましく進歩を遂げている。その認知の特徴が明らかになるにつれ、TEACCHプログラムなどに代表されるような、わかりやすいコミュニケーションの手段も開発されてきている。しかし、その一方で、自閉症者の認知のしくみに興味が集中することで、彼らが受ける心の傷の問題が置き去りにされはしないかという危惧がある。自閉症の障害を、断片化によるものであるというフリスの仮説をもとに、自閉症の傷つきにくい心と,傷つきやすい心のしくみを探り、トラウマになりかねない「心の傷」の存在について、実際に関わった事例から考えた。更に、一般にトラウマを被った心のケアの方法論をヒントにし、傷ついた心を癒していくための、要因として「安心できる場」を確保することの必要性についてを述べた。

人間の愛着行動 (いわゆる 「いちゃいちゃ」 ) は,幸福感を得るためや相手との関係をより良いものにするために重要な行為である.愛着行動はデリケートな行動のためプライバシが確保された場所で行うのが一般的であり,公共の場では行われない傾向にある.公共の場では,周囲の目が障壁となるため,カップルは愛着行動を行うことが困難になると考えられる.そこで我々は,公共空間内での対面状況において,周囲に不快感を与えることなく愛着行動を行えるメディアの研究開発を進めている.本稿では,裏腹的愛着行動を伝えあう対面コミュニケーションメディアである 「ちんかも」 を提案し,その有用性をユーザスタディによって検証する. : "Acting cozy" is important for lovers to feel happiness and to improve their relationships much better. Many lovers desire to always act cozy. However, it is actually difficult to act cozy in a public space although they are together there. Whereas the ordinary research efforts have attempted to mainly support long-distance lovers, there are also several issues to be solved even for short-distance lovers. Accordingly, we have been studying a medium that allows the short-distance lovers who stay together to convey cozy actions even in the public space without disgusting people around them. This paper investigates what kind of cozy actions should be transmitted between the lovers being together in the public space.

近年,生物が有する様々な生体アルゴリズムをテクノロジーヘ応用するバイオミメティックス(生態模擬技術)が提案されている.本研究は,次世代の音響センシング技術などへのブレークスルーを指向し,コウモリが超音波を利用して行う効率的な周囲環境情報収集システムを工学的に明らかにしていくことを目的としている.本稿では,生物ソナーと呼ばれる彼らのエコーロケーション能力を,実際の行動観測から得た結果を基に紹介する.

Web APIは情報サービスの,とりわけWeb上で提供されるサービスにおいて,縁の下の力持ちとして欠かせない位置を占めつつある。本稿ではWeb APIの提供と利用の両面から類型を示しながら,その歴史的な意義と機能を紹介する。学術情報分野を中心にWeb APIの提供事例とマッシュアップ事例を挙げるとともに,その利用目的やデータ形式,ライセンス,永続性といった点を取り上げて議論し,Web APIがもたらしている役割を解説する。
