This essay recounts my career as a student and teacher of English, which had its beginning on Saturday, August 4th, 1951 and ended on the same day of the month and week fifty years later : a strange coincidence coupled with another that marked a Golden Jubilee of the IAUPE (International Association of University Professors of English) on the same date in Bamberg, Germany. There I concluded my career by being invited to contribute two papers for the occasion, one orally presented at the conference and the other included in the Jubilee Volume of essays written by 20 representative members of the Association. The present article is a narration of various fortunes and adversities that I experienced in my life and during the half century of my career. The epigraph quoted from Shakespeare is meant to portray myself as a player on a stage of life, beginning with "the whining school-boy, with his satchel... creeping like snail/Unwilling to school," leading up to the "Last scene of all,/That ends this strange eventful history...." I played various roles from act to act on the stage, ranging from one of a bartender at a US military recreational facility on Okinawa to that of an academic delivering a lecture on Yeats at an international seminar held in the poet's country, Ireland. Mine has been indeed a "strange eventful history," attended with many difficulties ; yet it has been a truly rewarding one.

Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) depredation levels remain high in Japan even though over 1, 000 nuisance bears are killed annually, and an additional 1, 000 bears are killed during the hunting season. Nuisance activity includes damages to trees, crops, orchards, apiaries, fish farms, and other property. Landowners experiencing bear damages request hunter assistance. Hunters then set cage traps to catch and kill nuisance bears, and legally sell the parts, especially the gall bladders, of the bears they killed. We promoted non-lethal methods to reduce Asiatic black bear depredation in Nagano Prefecture from 1995 to 2000. Hunters were the most reluctant to adopt non-lethal methods to reduce depredation ; landowners were somewhat reluctant ; and municipal officials were the least reluctant. Hunter financial and emotional rewards for killing bears were large. Landowners were not actively involved in the protection of their property because they lacked know-how and resources, and because hunters offered an easy alternative. Reducing long term depredation may require the prefectural government to : (1) lead an aggressive and sustained campaign to teach landowners how to avoid conflicts with bears and to reinforce the fact that the systematic killing of nuisance bears has failed to reduce long term depredation in the past ; (2) encourage and finance widespread use of preventive methods such as the removal of bear attractants, the planting of crops that are not attractive to bears in areas at risk, electric fences, and the protection and restoration of broadleaf forests rich in bear foods ; and (3) change or remove the financial incentives linking the killing of bears to the protection of property. Furthermore, a national bear gall bladder tagging system would allow the monitoring of the legal national trade in bear parts and would help monitor annual bear kills.

ナベブタムシAphelocheirus vittatusとトゲナベブタムシA.nawaeの生活環を前者は京都市の鴨川(賀茂川)で,後者は兵庫県三田市の武庫川での野外調査と京都市下鴨での飼育実験に基づいて考察した.ナベブタムシは調査河川の中流域では1年で1世代であるが,上流域では2年で1世代と考えられる.トゲナベブタムシも武庫川(中流域)では1年で1世代と推定される.両種とも成虫の寿命は少なくとも1年はあり,雌成虫は春期〜初秋に産卵すると思われる.ナベブタムシを長日(15時間照明9時間暗期)の3温度区で飼育し,卵から羽化までの発育所要日数から算出した有効積算温量は1,789日度(発育零点:10.2℃)で,トゲナベブタムシの長日4温度区での飼育結果から算出したそれは2,000日度(発育零点:8.2℃)であった.この2種の生活環は類似していた.また,本研究における2種の調査地の環境は,基本的に底質が中礫を含む砂質および細礫の河川で,pH値が7-10の溶存酸素が多く,流れが比較的速い場所であり,この2種の生息環境に顕著な違いはみいだせなかった.それらの地点には水生植物が生育し,ナベブタムシ類の餌となる他の底生無脊椎動物も豊富であった.
