The Tenmei Odawara Earthquake outbroke in early morning of 23th August, 1782, and damages of building and houses took place at the castle town of Odawara and its vicinity, 80km SW of Tokyo. USAMI et al. (1984) had newly found out several kind of old documents and had made clear that intensity V or more was felt within the circle with the radius of 45km around Odawara. No reliable record of tsunami had been found out, and it had been considered that no tsunami was accompanied. But in the recent few years two old documents with tsunami disaster records at the fishery harbor of Ajiro in Atami City, 100km SW of Tokyo, were newly found out, inundation height was surveyed as 4 meters, and tsunami magnitude was estimated as m=1. The magnitude of the earthquake was judged by comparison of magnitude of tsunami, and areas of intensities III-IV, V, and VI with the 1982 Urakawa-Oki Earthquake-Tsunami (M=7.1, tsunami magnitude m=0), and was estimated as M=7.2. The Location of the epicenter was suggested to be situated at (35.1°N, 139.2°E), about 10km in the offing of Atami City.

The Tonankai earthquake of December 7, 1944 occurred on the upper plane of the subducted slab located at the boundary between the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate. Recently it was pointed out that in the Kumano-coast region, the southeast part of the Kii Peninsula, the direction of the strike of the subducting Philippine Sea plate runs from southwest to northeast, while in the Ensyu-coast region, which is located between Nagoya and Shizuoka, the direction runs from east to west. We assumed that the dislocation of seismic faulting took place on the determined plate boundary and the dislocation is equal on each fault plane. As the plate boundary discontinues beneath the Ise Bay, two different fault planes were considered in our fault model: the one is located along the Kumano-coast on which the amount of slip is 200cm and its direction is N50°E, and the other is along the Ensyu-coast on which the amount of slip is 50cm and its direction is N50°E. We checked that the crustal movement calculated by our model is similar to the observed pattern. We carried out a numerical simulation of the tsunami based on our model. It was found that the sea level changes calculated by our model agreed well with the tide gauge records at four stations on the coast of the Ise Bay.

In the evening of November 7, 1855, a large earthquake occurred beneath the sea off the southern coast of the Tokai district, central part of the Honshu Island. Recently more than fifty kind of historical documents were discovered, and we obtained much amount of knowledge about it. Most serious damages occurred in several villages on the coast in the vicinity of Hamamatsu City, where destruction of houses and gushing of sand were reported. Shock of intensity IV (in JMA scale) was experienced in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture and at several cities on the east coast of the Kii Peninsula. After the occurrence of the earthquake, a small tsunami was generated, and was observed at the Shimoda Port near the tip of the Izu Peninsula, and at three ports on the east coast of the Kii Peninsula, where inundation height was one to two meters. The coast was upheaved near the mouth of the lake of Hamana where it had been subsided with the occurrence of the Ansei Tokai Earthquake of December 23, 1854. In contrast to that, the coast near the cape of Omaezaki was subsided with this earthquake, which had been upheaved with the Ansei Tokai Earthquake.The estimations of the location of the epicenter and the magnitude were made by adapting least mean square method to the formulae which give the relationship between the magnitude and the area of intensities IV, V, and VI. The location of the epicenter and the magnitude are estimated 34.5°N, 137.8°E and M=7.1, respectively.

This study deals with the period between 1920 and the time Japan undertook a wartime posture in 1935-during this period higher education for women indicated a singular increase in facilities and enrollment.In considering why higher education for women showed so singular a quantitative development during this period, there is an explanation (diagrammatic explanation) that points to the prosperous situation of the economy following World War I, which brought about a change in the industrial and social structures-notably the development of the middle class-a change that entailed the “push” of arapid rise in the demand for further education and, simultaneously, the “pull” of a growing social demand for the graduates of higher education. This explanation is validated by many scholars. However, there is little mention about the specific meanings of “push” and “pull”, their organic unification and the specific mechanisms which led to their quantitative increase. Moreover, there are only few studies in support of such an explanation.In this paper, therefore, I will scrutinize the process of development in higher education for women during the post WWI period, and the vectors of the “push” and the “pull” at work in this development-with particular attention to the following: 1) Structural characteristics of higher education for women;2) The demographic (social) status of the entrants into higher education;3) The occupational distribution of the graduates of higher education.

Babesia ovata is a tick-transmitted hemoprotozoan parasite that infects cattle. In our study, bovine blood samples (n=2,034) were collected from 10 different countries (Brazil, China, Ghana, Japan, Mongolia, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam) and DNA extracted. The DNA samples were screened using an established and specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting the Apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA-1) gene. Parasite DNA was detected among samples collected from Japan, Mongolia and Thailand. Sequence analyses confirmed that the PCR assay detected only B. ovata AMA-1, and that amplicons from different geographical locations were conserved. Our findings highlight the importance of designing adequate strategies to control B. ovata infection in Japan, Mongolia, and Thailand.

An 8-year-old, spayed, female Shiba dog was presented to a referring veterinarian with a complaint of chronic diarrhea and anorexia. Ultrasound and radiographs revealed an irregular mass in the pelvic cavity. The mass and the affected section of colon were surgically removed. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal coalescing granulomas and effaced intestinal structures. Central necrotic debris surrounded by multinucleated giant cells, lymphocytes, plasma cells and neutrophils was observed. Numerous, irregularly branched hyphae with pale basophilic, thin walls and occasional bulbous enlargements at the tips were present. Polymerase chain reaction identified Basidiobolus ranarum, successfully confirming a definitive diagnosis of basidiobolomycosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of intestinal basidiobolomycosis in a dog.

Background:Little is known about subclinical atherosclerosis on coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) in asymptomatic individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS).Methods and Results:We analyzed 5,213 asymptomatic individuals who underwent CCTA. A cardiac event was defined as a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction, unstable angina, or coronary revascularization. Of the study participants, 2,042 (39.2%) had MetS. MetS was an independent predictor of significant coronary artery disease (CAD) in at least 1 coronary artery (odds ratio [OR]=1.992, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.623–2.445, P<0.001) and significant CAD in the left main (LM) or proximal left anterior descending (LAD) artery (OR=2.151, 95% CI=1.523–3.037, P<0.001). During the follow-up period (median 28.1 [interquartile range, 19.2–36.5] months), 111 individuals had 114 cardiac events. Individuals with MetS were significantly associated with more cardiac events than those without (RR [rate ratio]=1.67, 95% CI=1.15–2.43, P=0.007). In the MetS group, individuals with significant CAD had the majority of cardiac events (RR=64.33, 95% CI=29.17–141.88, P<0.001). Furthermore, in the MetS with significant CAD group, those with significant CAD in the LM or proximal LAD had more cardiac events (RR=2.63, 95% CI=1.51–4.59, P=0.001).Conclusions:MetS was associated with subclinical atherosclerosis on CCTA with subsequent high risk for cardiac events. These findings suggest the importance of reducing unfavorable metabolic conditions in asymptomatic individuals.

第2世代の抗ヒスタミン薬であるロラタジンが,猫アレルギー性皮膚炎の管理に有効であるという逸話的情報が教科書やインターネット上で報告されている。そこでロラタジンをアレルギー性皮膚炎に罹患した27頭の猫に,5 mg/catで1日1回経口投与した。その結果,わずか1頭(4%)の猫においてそう痒を良好に管理することが可能であった。有害事象は認められなかった。

加熱押出し法によって小麦粉を加工するときの基本的特性をフローテスタを用いて定量的に追求し,次の結果を得た。(1) 薄力粉は加圧力150kg/cm2のときに138℃近辺から流動を開始し, 170℃を越えると多孔質の組織を持ち始め190℃を越えると流出物は麸状となる。加圧力200kg/cm2のときは温度に伴う膨化率の上昇がこれよりも明確で, 190℃を越えると膨化率は減少する。(Fig. 3(a),(b))(2)強力粉の場合には膨化率は前二者よりも低く,膨化率の極値も現れない。(Fig. 3(c))(3) 膨化率は見かけの粘度と密接な関係があり,その両者の関係は次式によって示される。(薄力粉)(強力粉)

In the Ise Bay, there is a problem of drifting debris. This study examines the validity to use an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for the prediction of collection position of the drifting debris. The ANN model predicting the positions of debris generation and debris accumulation is constructed by checking suitable input data and ANN parameters and transfer function. The resulting ANN gives good predictions: 1) The fit ratio of the drifting debris generation positions is 83%; 2) The fit ratio of drifting debris accumulation positions is more than 50%; and 3) In front of Yokkaichi city and southward of Centrair (The central Japan International Airport) are the main places where drifting debris gathers.

We reported factors and their treatment for health care of low back pain from the viewpoint of oriental medicine. Factors in low back pain due to the kidney and spleen vacuity in medical and welfare workers, and helpers were thought to be due to "overfatigue (hard work)" which are non-endon-exopathogenic factors from the standpoint of oriental medicine. Treatment of low back pain in oriental medicine was as follows: The most important point in health care to avoid low back pain is to avoid fatigue. In the type of low back pain due to spleen vacuity, it is important not to be indifferent to health, over-drinking and over-eating, as endogenous dampness because there is a close relationship between spleen vacuity and "wet". It is important in preventing "wet", to try to not engage in bathing or hydrotherapy for a long time and after work, and to dry the body sufficiently. If we keep the spleen in good condition, we can avoid changing from "wet" to "phlegm (tan)" and avoid a out or decrease in "stasis blood (oketsu)". In the type of low back pain due to kidney vacuity, it is important to not become "cold" and if we do, to take care to warm our body soon.

現在、高齢化社会を迎え独居高齢者の数も増加傾向にある。そのため、遠隔地から近親者等が高齢者の生活状況や健康状態を確認することができる見守りシステムが必要とされている。しかし、既存の見守りシステムは日常活動の詳細な抽出 や遠隔地と通信すべき情報の質などの検討が不十分であり、実用的なサービスを提供できていない。 そこで、我々は3軸の加速度センサ用い、詳細な日常活動 を検出することで、高齢者の健康状態や異常事態が検出可能な見守りシステムの開発を試みている。本論文では、その第一段階として、様々な歩行状態で歩いた際に加速度センサからどのようなデータが得られるか確認し、その分類方法について検討する。

アレルギー性鼻炎症状を有するボランティアを対象にR50547点鼻剤を投与し, 本剤の薬物動態および鼻誘発反応に対する効果を検討した.薬物動態を検討した結果, 0.1および0.2mg投与時のt1/2およびTmaxは, 健常人で行われた単回投与試験結果とほぼ一致していた.鼻誘発反応に対する本剤の抑制効果を検討した結果, 有効率 (有効以上の%) が50%以上であつた持続時間は, 0.05, 0.1および0.2mg投与群でそれぞれ8, 8および12時間であつた. これら有効率の持続時間から, 本剤の至適投与回数は, 0.05および0.1mgでは1日2~3回, 0.2mgでは1日2回と推察された.以上より, R50547点鼻剤の鼻誘発反応に対する抑制効果が認められ, 本剤がアレルギー性鼻炎に対し, 少ない投与回数で効果が持続できる有用な薬剤である可能性が示唆された.
