The main subject of this study is to show that it is possible to assume an intimate relationship between Joseph Butler(1692-1752)and Adam Smith(1723-1790)through comparative analysis of their arguments concerning self-deceit.The relationship between Butler and Smith is a subject which has been relatively disregarded in relevant literature. Although scholars have observed similarity between them in respect of conscience, there are little research conducted on this subject. Focusing on self-deceit, the present study demonstrates that sufficient evidence exists to assume a more intimate relationship between Butler and Smith than has been considered.

マツダは,約11年ぶりに復活となる新型ロータリーエンジン8C型を開発した。小型高出力な本エンジンを発電機として,シリーズハイブリッドで活用するものであり,地球環境を守るための施策として掲げているマルチソリューション戦略の1つである。本エンジンの開発でも「飽くなき挑戦」の精神を継承し,内燃機関の進化ビジョンを実現する熱効率改善技術,構造技術の進化と最適化に取り組んだ。ロータリーエンジンで課題となる冷却損失は,基本諸元を見直し最適化した。従来鋳鉄製であったサイドハウジングは材料をアルミに置換し軽量化した。また,燃焼進化にあわせて適宜レシプロエンジン構成技術の活用と高負荷燃焼に耐えうる構造強化を行った。レシプロエンジンと比べ,求められる出力性能をよりコンパクトなユニットで実現できる特長を活かし,サイズの大きな高出力モーター,ジェネレーターと組み合わせて同軸上に配置しながらも,MX-30の車体フレームへの搭載を可能とした。

This article compares shopping streets with a “mall-like” space from the viewpoint of spatial form and its social effects. It argues for the unique nature of “real” shopping streets, particularly their everyday creativity, which is embedded in their physical structure. Shopping streets are basically composed of two different spatial parts: “streets” and “shops.” Within shopping streets, these come into contact with each other. In effect, the world of the shopping street becomes a kind of contact zone, where different rules and orders meet, oppose, negotiate, and are forced to adapt. To make such zones both dynamic and capable of reproducing themselves, shopping streets need to be under the “care” of several agents. This process is very complex, costly, and sometimes noisy, but the “care” caused by this “noise” makes shopping streets sustainable spaces of everyday diversity.

Nach der Polemik uber das Wesen des Asthetischen in Sowjetrepublik hat die materialistische Asthetik diejenige Tendenz gehabt, dass sie das Asthetische als asthetischen Wert begreift. Diese Tendenz bedeutet die Uberwindung des alten Materialismus und die Versuchung, aus dem Gesichtspunkt vom praktischen Materialismus das Asthetische als Subjekt-Objekt-Relation besonderer Art zu erfassen. Solcher Tendenz gehoren die bemerkenswurdigen Forschungen M. Kagans und L. Stolowitsch's. Dennoch konnen ihre Theorien einige Schwachen nicht vermeiden, denn sie verstehen die grundlegende Subjekt-Objekt-Relation nur unrichtig, oder auflosen die asthetischen Beziehungen in allgemeinen Grundwiderspruch. Nun ist es die Asthetik heute (1978) von E. Pracht und anderen, die diese Forschungsergebnisse kritisch ubernommen und weiter entwickelt hat. Sie finden den Grundwiderspruch der asthetischen Beziehungen in der Relation zwischen Gebrauchs-und Gestaltwert, und begreifen den Gestaltwert als widerspruchliche Einheit von Ausdrucks-und Eigenwert. Nach ihrer Meinung existiert das Asthetische nur in der asthetischen Wertrelation, und es kommt in der Zweckverschiebung in Richtung auf den menschlichen Selbstzweck zustande. Sogar erwahnen sie sowohl die Objektivitat der asthetischen Wertung als auch die asthetische Norm und das asthetische Ideal.

Evidence-based practice stems from medicine. It involves the concept of Real-World Evidence (RWE), which involves the analysis of routinely collected patient data to extract evidence of practice. In this paper, we propose a learning-analytics (LA) based reflective teaching workflow that analyzes data from daily teaching and learning environments. This reflective teaching workflow uses a Learning and Evidence Analytics Framework (LEAF), a specific learning platform that is currently used in multiple Japanese and international educational institutions. This workflow provides a bottom-up approach for producing evidence from routinely collected data on the LA platform. We illustrate a case study in a Japanese high school math class to demonstrate the practical use of this reflective teaching workflow. We draw implications from this reflective workflow towards producing rich and robust evidence in the LEAF system, which should lead to the democratization of evidence-based practice in the classroom.

デビュー作『楽園のこちら側』の「すべての神は死に、すべての戦争は戦われ、そして人間への信頼はすべて揺らいでいる(中略)心に神はいなかった」という「失われた世代のマニフェスト」は「罪の赦し」(1924)というカトリック教会からの離脱物語まで続く。しかし、翌年の代表作『グレート・ギャツビー』(1925)で私がモダンな信仰と呼ぶような近代的信仰が成立する。モダンな信仰とは、近代的の啓蒙思想の流れにあり、アメリカのポジティヴな思想などとも通底する世界と自己に関する楽観的信仰であり、現在もよりどころとされる人権思想とも深く関わっている。しかし、その信仰も次作『夜はやさし』(1934)では失われてしまう。

Recently, there have been remarkable developments in the treatment of jaw deformities. Nowadays, surgical correction of jaw deformities is performed at maxillo-facial surgery clinics throughout Japan.This paper discusses the history of surgical treatment for correction of jaw deformities in Japan. It also discusses the rationale behind the author's introduction of the sagittal splitting method of the mandibular rami for treatment of mandibular prognathism, and reports the results of the first and second cases treated using this method in 1969. Then, it discusses various methods used by the author in orthognathic surgery. As a historical background, the development by Prof. Hugo L. Obwegeser of sagittal splitting of the mandibular rami and LeFort I osteotomy, which are among the most important procedures in orthognathic surgery, are introduced. The factors that have influenced the development of the treatment of jaw deformities in Japan are considered, and finally the challenges involved in the treatment of jaw deformities are discussed.

炎症性腸疾患(IBD)の自然史あるいは長期経過をreviewし,その時代的な改善の有無をみた.その理由は,IBDに対する治療が進み,その自然史が改善されたと推定されるからである.しかし,実際の欧米からの報告をみると手術率や死亡率などの指標の改善は確実でない.その理由として,強力な治療法のうち,緩解維持に使われる薬物や経腸栄養療法がまだ徹底していないことが挙げられる.緩解維持の目標にも,粘膜治癒をもたらすまで強力に推し進めることが重要とされつつある.その際には粘膜病変治癒を評価するための画像診断を活用することが求められよう.さらに,緩解導入剤を適切に選択し,開始する時期の決定,緩解維持療薬の投与量の調節など改善の余地は大きいと考えられた.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid 2 (TRPV2) channels are expressed and play functional roles in various immune cells. Physical stimuli leading to TRPV2 activation causes mast cell degranulation. Besides their roles in immune cells, it has been shown that TRPV2 channels are pathophysiologically relevant to degenerative muscular diseases such as dilated cardiomyopathy and muscular dystrophy. Hence, development of drug candidates that inhibit human TRPV2 activation is an urgent matter. NK-4, a cryptocyanine dye, inhibited agonist-induced TRPV2 activity in mouse TRPV2-transfected HEK293 cells. However, it remains unclear whether NK-4 exerts regulatory effects on the activation of human TRPV2 channels. In this study, we show that NK-4 inhibits intracellular Ca2+ increase in human TRPV2-transfected HEK293 cells preactivated with a TRPV2 agonist. The inhibitory effect of NK-4 (IC50=0.27 μM) on human TRPV2 activation was 74-fold stronger than that on mouse TRPV2 activation (IC50=20 μM). NK-4 also inhibited the agonist-induced TRPV2 expression at the plasma membrane, when the human TRPV2-expressing cells were stimulated with the agonist in the presence of NK-4. These results suggest that NK-4 abrogates the agonist-induced signaling events leading to human TRPV2 activation. Furthermore, TRPV2 agonist caused degranulation of RBL-2H3 cells, which represents a phenomenon related to physical urticarias. NK-4 suppressed the release of β-hexosaminidases upon degradation with IC50 of 1.9 μM, 35-fold lower than that determined with an anti-allergic drug, Epinastine. Our results suggest that NK-4 would be a potential therapeutic strategy to resolve dilated cardiomyopathy and its associated heart failure as well as physical urticarias.

1991年から現在まで,北海道足寄郡陸別町では雪氷分野での実験・観測として,陸別の寒さに関する観測,深層掘削機開発実験,雪上滑走路造成実験,降雪量比較観測,が実施されてきた.これらの大規模な観測・実験を実施するためには,実験を計画する研究者側の熱意とともにそれを受けとめる地域の協力が極めて重要である.陸別での観測・実験では両者が有機的につながったため,これらの実験・観測を実施することができた.この報告ではこれらの観測・実験の最初の一歩の説明から始まり,それぞれの観測・実験の実施状況,さらに主要な成果を説明する.

Fusarium wilt is a significant disease in radish, but the genetic mechanisms controlling yellows resistance (YR) are not well understood. This study aimed to identify YR-QTLs and to fine-map one of them using F2:3 populations developed from resistant and susceptible radish parents. In this study, two high-density genetic maps each containing shared co-dominant markers and either female or male dominant markers that spanned 988.6 and 1127.5 cM with average marker densities of 1.40 and 1.53 cM, respectively, were generated using Genotyping by Random Amplicon Sequencing-Direct (GRAS-Di) technology. We identified two YR-QTLs on chromosome R2 and R7, and designated the latter as ForRs1 as the major QTL. Fine mapping narrowed down the ForRs1 locus to a 195 kb region. Among the 16 predicted genes in the delimited region, 4 genes including two receptor-like protein and -kinase genes (RLP/RLK) were identified as prime candidates for ForRs1 based on the nucleotide sequence comparisons between the parents and their predicted functions. This study is the first to use a GRAS-Di for genetic map construction of cruciferous crops and fine map the YR-QTL on the R7 chromosome of radish. These findings will provide groundbreaking insights into radish YR breeding and understanding the genetics of YR mechanism.

Tan spot, a foliar disease of Triticum spp. such as bread wheat (T. aestivum L.) and durum wheat (T. turgidum ssp. durum (Desf.) Husn.) caused by the filamentous fungus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died.) Drechsler leads to serious losses of crop yield and quality in some areas in Japan. P. tritici-repentis is classified into eight races according to the combinations of three necrotrophic effectors, PtrToxA, PtrToxB, and PtrToxC encoded by ToxA, ToxB, and ToxC1, respectively. Race classification has been based on reaction of a differential variety to necrotrophic effectors, which is tested by inoculation. Recent identification of the Tox genes and development of specific DNA markers have enabled us to classify races of P. tritici-repentis collected in Japan by Tox gene genotyping. We found that 17 strains collected from Triticum spp. in Japan were mainly race 1 or 2, because they carried ToxA as a toxin gene by current race classification; wheat genotype tsn1 is resistant to ToxA. Establishment of wheat cultivars carrying tsn1 would be most effective for decreasing agronomic losses caused by the disease in Japan.

The development of resistant rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties is a key strategy for the eco-friendly control of brown planthopper (BPH: Nilaparvata lugens Stål). However, BPH outbreaks occur frequently owing to the evolution of virulent strains in the field and the rapid breakdown of monogenic resistance to BPH. Therefore, to enhance BPH resistance and gauge the effectiveness of gene pyramiding against strongly virulent BPH, we developed pyramided lines (PYLs) in the genetic background of ‘IR64’ carrying BPH resistance genes. We developed six IR64-PYLs (BPH3 + BPH17, BPH32 + BPH17, BPH32 + BPH20, BPH3 + BPH17-ptb, BPH20 + BPH3, and BPH17-ptb + BPH32) through marker-assisted selection. To assess the resistance of the IR64-PYLs, we conducted antibiosis test, honeydew test, and modified seedbox screening test (MSST) using strongly virulent BPH populations. The level of BPH resistance increased in all six IR64-PYLs compared to both ‘IR64’ and the corresponding NILs in MSST. Among them, IR64-BPH3 + BPH17 and IR64-BPH32 + BPH17 exhibited the highest resistance to BPH. However, the resistance level of most IR64-PYLs was not significantly higher than that of the corresponding NILs in antibiosis test. Thus, these PYLs could serve as a valuable resource for breeding programs aimed at improving resistance to virulent strains of BPH and enhancing their durability.
