Fragment molecular orbital (FMO) calculation is a useful ab initio method for analyzing protein–ligand interactions in the current structure-based drug design. When multiple ligands exist for one receptor, a post-FMO calculation tool is required because of large numbers of interaction energy decomposition terms calculated using this method. In this study, a method that combines self-organizing maps (SOM) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) was proposed to analyze the results of the FMO energy components. This method could effectively compress the high-dimensional energy terms and is expected to be useful to analyze the interaction between protein and ligands. A case study of antitype 2 diabetes mellitus target DPP-IV and its inhibitors was analyzed to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. After performing dimensional compression using SOM and further grouping using HCA, we obtained superclasses of the inhibitors based on the dispersion energy (DI), which showed consistency with structural information, indicating that further analyses of detailed energies per superclass can be an effective approach for obtaining important ligand–protein interactions.

In search of a ball throwing technique for bowling perfect game, the quality engineering approach was used to determine a robust technique that would not depend on the lane condition. Noise factors such as the dynamic friction coefficient of the lane which the bowler cannot control, and control factors which the bowler can control, were selected; appropriate throwing levels were found by quality engineering; and these appropriate levels were adopted as a set of basic levels. The basic levels can then be tuned on the basis of pocket and pin action heuristics to derive the optimal throwing trajectory. Strikes can be obtained by maintaining the optimal trajectory while tuning only the speed of the ball to deal with factors that the bowler cannot control, such as the dynamic friction of the lane.

The discovery process and the mechanism of p-type surface layer accumulation of hydrogen terminated diamond surfaces have been reviewed from the point of surface characterization and carrier formation near the subsurface. Since diamond is an insulating material, the surface density is as high as the order of 1013 cm−2 that is enough for high performance field effect transistors to be realized. The surface dipole formed by hydrogen-carbon bonds has a crucial role for the surface band structure of diamond. Also important is several types of negatively charged adsorbates necessary for charge neutrality condition and hole accumulation. New models for carrier emergence such as a transfer doping model have been discussed.

富士フイルムでは,長年にわたり“ポリウレタンウレア壁マイクロカプセル技術”を導入した感熱·感圧記録材料を開発~販売している.ポリウレタンウレアによるマイクロカプセル壁は界面重合法により形成されるが,マイクロカプセル壁のガラス転移点や力学特性の制御が容易であることから,様々な感熱·感圧記録材料の高機能化に貢献してきた.現在,感熱記録材料として,医療用ドライサーマルイメージャー「DRYPIX Lite」用記録フィルム「DI-HT」などを販売しており,マイクロカプセル技術によって長期保存性と高い透明性による高画質化を実現している.また感圧記録材料としては,マイクロカプセル技術により幅広い圧力領域での圧力分布/圧力バランス測定を可能にした“圧力測定フイルム;Prescale (プレスケール)”の販売も行っている.本稿では,上記“ポリウレタンウレア壁マイクロカプセル”を形成する技術を解説するとともに,現在販売されている記録材料に導入した技術を紹介する.

肝細胞癌の局所治療は,低侵襲性,凝固域の広さからラジオ波熱凝固療法(RFA)が中心である.第2世代超音波造影剤,Real-time virtual sonographyの登場でRFA時の治療支援が容易になり,客観性のある,確実な治療が行えるようになった.また,エコー下の視認性を良好にするため,人工胸水・腹水を注入したり,また各種合併症の回避法も確立され,RFAの安全性は向上してきた.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) represent a family of diverse DNA viruses consisting of more than 100 types and have been extensively studied as an etiological factor in benign and malignant tumors. In malignant epithelial lesions, the mechanism by which two E6 and E7 proteins of the high risk HPV types, HPV 16 and 18 interact with cellular factors in deregulating the normal growth of the cells, has been well described by many authors. The E6 and E7 proteins are consistently expressed in HPV-associated malignant tumor and E6 binding to the p53 gene mediated by the E6-associated protein ligase turned out to be important. In contrast important function of E7 was demonstrated by its binding to pRb and Rb-related proteins. The bindings under phosphorylation of these proteins was degradated by ubiquination and transcription factors of the E2F regulated cell proliferation. Overall HPV 16 DNA is able to induced modifications in the host cells and immortalizing epithelial cells by stimulating human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) protein. High risk E6 proteins directly interacts with c-myc and c-myc/E6 complex activates hTERT protein expression. The various methods for detection or cloning of HPV DNA are summarized in this manuscript. PCR method has been become an established technique for detecting a large number of HPV DNAs. In particular PCR-RFLP is a simple and useful method for identifying the specific HPV types. However many modifications of the methods have been developed. Recently clinical trials are being conducted to test the preventive efficacy of HPV vaccines, directed against HPV 16 and 18 in Japan. In the future the therapeutic efficacy of HPV vaccines are required to prevent cervical cancer and other HPV associated cutaneous carcinomas.

In Tokushima, on February16^<th> 2005, Mayor Hara declared a "state of financial crisis." The text of this declaration mentioned a necessary strengthening of selfgovernance in the prefectural capital and the realization of positive improvement through cooperation with citizens while also emphusizing the importance of a stable financial basis. 「If financial matters continue to be handled in the same way, we will face, in the very near future, a serious degradation, which, in the case of a company, would mean nothing less than bankruptcy. This city's financial matters are truly in a state of emergency.」 With these words, Mayor Hara strongly tried to demonstrate to the people of Tokushima the absolute necessity of financial reform. In my manuscript, the analysis of the actual state of the financial problems and the definition of the problems which have led to their coming into existence are my objectives. There are discussions in Tokushima concerning reform and my analysis is necessarily conducted while the future course of reform is not yet decided. Documents such as recent financial data are employed. In order to analyze the refoums necessary for Tokushima's future, this paper discusses reform proposals, the organization of local government officials and recent reforms in Naruto City.

This paper describes measures to suppress the temperature increase inside tunnels on urban roads. The Yamate Tunnel is a long tunnel extending a total of 18km in the center of Tokyo. The tunnel interior temperature has increased during the summer. Motorcycle riders have complained about the heat inside the tunnel. So we investigated and analyzed the causes of the temperature increase. To suppress the increase of the temperature, we installed mist spraying equipment inside the tunnel. This system successfully cooled the inside of the tunnel. Furthermore, we compared the calculated value to the measured value of the temperature in the tunnel.
