Thin layered element method (TLM) is an efficient way for computation of Green’s functions. However, it requires unbounded domain represented by an absorbing boundary or layer. A perfectly matched layer (PML) is one of the highest accuracy techniques to absorb outgoing waves from a bounded domain. In this paper, I apply the PML to the TLM in order to improve calculation precision of elastic wave field in a layered half-space. The accuracy of this method is examined by comparing its results with theoretical solution. It is found that the PML gives good results when compared to conventional method.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of goats for the control and removal of weeds in open spaces from the perspective of reducing the environmental impact, recycling resources, and creating new landscapes, in addition to compensating for shrinking budgets and workforces of municipalities. However, because of the lack of systematic information on the challenges often faced by inexperienced goat farmers in using goats as weed control agents, the keys to the successful utilization of goats for the task remain unmapped. Therefore, we conducted explorative interviews with fifteen goat keepers on Awaji Island and in the Kansai area of Japan who had started goat weed control without prior experience. From the obtained narratives, the process for introducing goats as weed control agents was organized in chronological order. During the investigation, we found that six goat keepers could not meet their original objectives, while nine overcame their difficulties. Throughout the investigation, the issues that arose in the process and the responses of the keepers were recorded and categorized according to their causes. Our findings suggest the necessary points to be considered for utilizing goats for weed control in the future, depending on the stage of introduction.

As one field of sports, there is a game of bike trial. Riders operate mountain bicycles with various advanced techniques. The purpose of this research is to create a bike trial robot that can operate a mountain bicycle and perform various maneuvers such as jumping, bike wheelie and etc. In this paper, a mechanical analysis concerning individual techniques including bike wheelie and Daniel is presented. The analyzing method and the results of computer simulations are also presented.

いわゆる粘膜下口蓋裂を含めた先天性鼻咽腔閉鎖不全症(Congenital Velopharyngeal Incompetence以下CVPI)のなかには,著しい開鼻声を伴う構音障害,心奇型などの合併奇型に加えて精神発達の遅れを伴う症例が多いとされているが詳細な報告はほとんどみられない.そこでわれわれはCVPIの診断基準を定義した上で,鼻咽腔形態・機能および顔貌に関する客観的な計測結果が明らかとなっているCVPI15例,対照群として唇顎口蓋裂症例18例(Cleft Lip and Palate以下CLP)を対象症例とし,4才2ヶ月-13才2ヶ月時に,WPPSIまたは,WISC-R,ITPA言語学習能力診断検査,Frostig視知覚発達検査(DTVP)を行い,鼻咽腔形態による分類型、Calnanの3徴候,特徴的顔貌所見別に精神発達について比較検討を行った.その結果,顔貌所見別では特徴的顔貌群はその他の群およびCLP群に比べ1%水準で有意に低い値を示した.鼻咽腔形態による分類型別では軟口蓋の長さと咽頭腔の深さとの関係が不均衡なII型群が低い値を示し,Calnanの3徴候別では無徴候,1徴候群が低い値を示した.以上の結果より特徴的顔貌所見を有する症例とその他の症例との間には精神発達に著しい相違がみられ,さらに鼻咽腔形態、Calnanの3徴候と精神発達との関連性も示唆された.われわれは従来より鼻咽腔形態,顔面形態の客観的分折によりCVPIの中の1つのカテゴリーとしての特徴的顔貌の存在を証明し報告してきたが,今回はさらにこれらの特徴的顔貌を呈する症例において精神発達の遅れが認められ疾患としての独立性が0層明らかとされた.これらのことよりわれわれは先天性鼻咽腔閉鎖不全,特徴的顔貌,精神発達の遅れなどの所見がみられる症例を新しい症候群として一括して扱うことを提唱したい.

有用な情報をいかにして手に入れるかという問題は古くて新しい問題である。異分野交流の典型であるバイオミメティクスではそれが顕著に表れる。バイオミメティクスでは,生物が実現しているさまざまな機能を模倣することによって,これまでにない有用な機能を革新的な方法で実現することを目指している。しかし,生物学に不案内な工学者が生物に関する有用な情報を入手することは容易ではない。本稿では,そのような工学者を支援するための新しいシソーラスであるOntology-Enhanced Thesaurus(OET)に関する概要を解説する。OETは,オントロジーという一般的で抽象度の高い概念群を従来のシソーラスの上位に位置付けることによって,異分野間に存在するギャップを埋めることを目指している。オントロジーやシソーラスの解説も含めて,OETの構成やキーワード探索自体を支援するツールに関してわかりやすく説明する。

There have been some quantitative studies about the economic impact of professional sports teams on local regions, but there hasn’ t been any study in Japan that quantified the value, including the intangible or public goods value of a professional sports team, for a city. The objective of this paper was to estimate the money value, including intangible value, of a professional sports team for a city by using CVM (Contingent Valuation Method) and to find if the evaluation of the public goods aspect of a professional sport team by local residents has a positive effect on WTP (willingness to pay) . We selected the Japanese professional baseball team “A” and conducted CVM surveys in “B” city in which “A” team locates its home stadium. We estimated that the value of “A” team for “B” city is 141~341 million yen minimum, and 488~1,175 million yen maximum for a year and the present value as 2.4~5.9 billion yen minimum and 8.4~20.3 billion yen maximum. And we found that the evaluation of the public goods aspect of a professional sports team by local residents has a positive effect on WTP.

左右差は自然科学·人文科学を問わず様々に人々の興味をかき立てる魅力的な研究対象であり,生物の行動を神経回路-細胞-分子などの複数の階層から理解しようとするシステム神経科学の立場からも,ひとつの興味深い系であるといえる.本稿では,筆者らの最近の研究であるヒトの両腕動作における情報表現の左右差の紹介を交えながら,運動系における左右差について紹介する.

We first analyzed the dietary records at a Zen monastery from the viewpoint of nutrition and food intake. The means of the total energy, protein and fat intake were significantly lower than a normal diet. The amounts of other nutrients had the same tendency. The mushrooms and seaweed intakes were extremely better than any other food groups. In addition, we conducted investigations regarding the diet and health of Zen monks training at Zen monasteries to examine their nutrient intake and health condition. The nutrient consumption of Zen monks was high carbohydrates, high dietary fiber, low fat, and low cholesterol, and this was especially conspicuous in the non-animal food consumption group. There were no concerns about their blood parameters. However, a decrease in their QOL is a concern. Finally, to clarify the difference in the serum lipid and blood glucose levels between young Zen monks and middle-aged Zen monks, we investigated their nutrient intake and health conditions. In both groups, no distinct difference was observed in their HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. However, the total cholesterol and blood glucose levels of the young group were remarkably higher than those of the middle-aged group. Therefore, this study suggested that physiological changes in the body due to aging affected the total cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

クゲヌマランは海岸のマツ林などに自生するとされる絶滅危惧種であるが,近年,埋立地などを中心に個体数が増加している。しかし,その生態については不明な点が多く,保全対策の検討が困難である。そこで,埋立地のシラカシ・タブノキ植栽林のクゲヌマラン群生地で野外播種試験を行い,クゲヌマランの種子発芽と初期成長を観察した。その結果,播種後 1年で 20 %近くの発芽率が確認され,複数の根が伸長し,長さ 3 cmまで成長した個体もみられた。同地で試験を行っているキンランと比較し,成長が早かった。埋立地の樹林環境が本種の発芽・成長に適していることから,都市部の植栽林がクゲヌマランの保全に貢献していると考えられる。

The terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc commune is an anhydrobiotic organism with extreme longevity. Recovery of photosynthesis by rehydration was examined using our laboratory stocks of dry N. commune thalli after long-term storage in a desiccated state. In the samples stored at room temperature for over 8 years, photosynthetic oxygen evolution was barely detectable, whereas oxygen consumption was recovered. There was an exceptional case in which photosynthetic oxygen evolution recovered after 8 years of storage at room temperature. Both photosynthetic oxygen evolution and respiratory oxygen consumption were recovered in dry thalli stored at -20°C for over 15 years. Consistent with the recovery of photosynthetic oxygen evolution, Fv/Fm was detected in the samples stored at -20°C at levels similar to those of freshly collected N. commune colonies. Carotenoids, scytonemin and chlorophyll a appeared to be intact in the dry thalli stored at -20°C, but β-carotene was not detected in the samples stored at room temperature. α-Tocopherol was intact in the samples stored at -20°C but was degraded in the samples stored at room temperature. These results suggest that dry thalli of N. commune are capable of sustaining biological activities for a long time, although they are gradually damaged when stored at room temperature.

動物は環境の光から多くの情報を得るために,光受容タンパク質オプシンを使ってさまざまな光受容を行っている。 オプシンは吸収波長特性や生化学的性質などにおいて多様な特徴を示すので,動物の光受容の仕組みを理解するためにはオプシンの性質を知ることが重要である。特に視覚の発達した動物においては,オプシンの吸収波長特性が,眼や網膜の光学的な性質とも関連しながら視覚機能において重要な意味を持つ。筆者らは視覚が発達し,特殊な構造の網膜を持つハエトリグモの複数のオプシンについて,それぞれの吸収波長特性や機能について解析を行ってきた。網膜に発現する1種類のオプシンの吸収波長特性は,網膜の構造との関係によりピンぼけを生じさせ,それによって奥行き知覚のメカニズムを支えていることが示唆された。また,そのような吸収波長特性を生じさせる分子メカニズムにおいて,発色団レチナールの近傍に存在する水素結合系が重要な役割を果たしていることが明らかとなった。本稿では,このようなオプシンの吸収波長特性の生理的意義や波長制御について筆者らの研究成果を中心に紹介する。

我が国の鉄道のプラットホームで発生する鉄道人身障害事故やプラットホームからの転落の約60%は酔客が原因である.本研究の目的は,プラットホームに設置している防犯カメラ映像を分析し,プラットホームからの転落や列車接触に至った酔客の転落・列車接触時の行動パターンと転落前に見られる前兆行動を明らかにすることである.その結果,酔客の転落・列車接触時の行動パターンが3種類,転落前に見られる前兆行動が5種類あり,それぞれの行動の発生確率が判明した.また,酔客は転落・列車接触の直前までホーム上で静止しており,動き出してから数秒の間に転落・列車接触に至ったケースが全体の約90%を占めていた.このことから,駅員が前兆行動中の酔客を発見した場合は,速やかに酔客に声をかける等して,酔客の安全を確保することが重要である.

政治的意思決定や選挙行動は,政治家の掲げる公約や政策の内容だけでなく,有権者の偏見や政治家の容姿といった,政治とは直接的関連の薄い要因にも左右される。しかしながら,人々がどのような容姿を政治家としてふさわしいと感じ,なぜそれが政治的意思決定に影響を及ぼすのかは明らかにされていない。本研究では,逆相関法を用いた顔画像分類から,日本人が心のなかで想像する政治家の顔ステレオタイプを可視化し,政治家らしいと判断される顔の特性について明らかにすることを目的とした。実験では,2016年の参議院議員選挙候補者の平均顔にランダムノイズを付加した2枚の画像を生成し,実験参加者に「内閣総理大臣」あるいは「防衛大臣」にふさわしい顔つきの写真を繰り返し選択してもらう課題を実施した。参加者の画像分類を逆相関法により解析した結果,各大臣としてふさわしい男性顔および女性顔のステレオタイプを可視化することができた。
