Isaku Nishimura(1884~1963)is well-known as founder of a high school and college named "Bunka Gakuin" in Tokyo and as an architect dvocating new idealism on houses in the early 1900's. He was born in Shingu,Wakayama and raised by an eager Christian family.\nHe introduced western houses in order to innovate the old Japanese style in housing.He insisted that the living room be the most important room in a house. In addition he tried to adapt the Western way of sitting on chairs, sleeping on beds and eating in the manner of westerners. He especially evaluated American bungalows that had a living room planned in the center of the house. He established Nishimura Architects Office in Kobe and Tokyo in 1921.\nAt the same time Akio Senoo(1891~1962)who was a translator of English novels and also known as a mystery story writer admired western houses and western life-style.Senoo received recognition for his psychological description of the protagonist. In his works we can find fantastic and illusional atmosphere which depended on using lots of words to describe the architecture, a part of a building or elements of interior design with technical knowledge. Senoo ordered Nishimura to design and construct his house in 1931. The Senoo Residence completed the next year in Kawasaki-shi was a typical bungalow. That was a great example showing Nishimura's accomplishment as seen in the history, of Japanese houses.\nThis study illustrates how the common attitude and spirit of embracing Western lifestyle by Nishimura and Senoo was approved through their works.

Mitochondria play an important role in energy conversion as well as in intracellular calcium (Ca2+) storage. Ca2+ uptake from the cytosol to the mitochondria is mediated by the calcium uniporter, which functions as a Ca2+ ion channel. However, the molecular composition of this uniporter has remained unclear until recently. The Ca2+ ion channel consists of seven subunits. The yeast reconstitution technique revealed that the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) and essential MCU regulatory element (EMRE) are the core subunits of the complex. Furthermore, detailed structure-function analyses of the core subunits (MCU and EMRE) were performed. In this review, the regulatory mechanism of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake is discussed.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of eating speed during elementary and junior high school on body size at 20 years of age. We selected men and women aged 20-49 years through an internet survey. The survey comprised the participants’ current height, weight, and eating speed; weight at 20 years of age; body size during elementary and junior high school; presence or absence of food education classes; and eating speed during elementary and junior high school. The results indicated a relationship between eating speed during elementary and junior high school and body mass index (BMI) at 20 years of age. It was found that the faster the eating speed during elementary and junior high school, the higher the BMI at 20 years of age for both men and women (p for trend: all < 0.01). Moreover, these results remained unchanged even after excluding those who were obese during elementary or junior high school. Furthermore, the food education classes during elementary and junior high school caused a significant decrease in the eating speed only in women. In conclusion, our results indicated that a fast-eating speed during elementary and junior high school was associated with a high BMI at 20 years of age, and eating speed in women was affected by food education.

【目的】退院支援過程における退院調整看護師(以下DCN)とソーシャルワーカー(以下SW)が用いる,それぞれの職種に特有な専門性を反映した技術の性質や特徴を明らかとする。 【方法】同一施設で働くDCNとSW5組10名を対象に退院支援実践について半構造化面接を実施し,その内容を質的帰納的に分析した。 【結果】DCNとSWの退院支援の意図は共通であっても,家族支援,目標設定や課題のアセスメント,他職種との協働,院内の退院支援の質向上への働きかけ等において,用いる技術に専門性を反映した特徴や性質の違いが見られた。DCNは,療養者の予測される状態を自らアセスメントして他職種にその内容を確認し,SWは療養者の現在のニーズを多職種との連携・調整を行う中で把握するという特徴が明らかとなった。 【結論】退院支援過程におけるDCNとSWが用いる技術の性質や特徴は「支援対象の捉え方」と「多職種との関り方」を中心に専門性が反映されることが明らかとなった。

The particle size distribution and the specific surface area were measured on the comminution products of high carbon ferrochrome ground in rod-and ball-mill for 0.5 to 8 hr.It was found that the Gaudin-Schuhmann equation (Eq.1) can be applied for the particle size dis-tribution in their over-micron range. On the other hand, the Charles equation (Eq. 2) on the energysize reduction relationship did not cover the whole range of comminution carried out and the size modulus, k, and the inverse of specific surface area, 1/S, were found to converge to their limiting values. On the other hand, the Harris equation (Eqs. 5 and 6) based on a modified logistic function fit well the energy-size reduction relationships. The limiting value of the size modulus k and the specific surface area S, were estimated as 22 to 26μ and 2 to 5×104 cm2/cm3, respectively.The specific surface area estimated on the basis of size distribution did not coincide with that measuredby the air permeability method. At longer grinding times, the measured values become larger than the estimated ones. This difference was supposed to be due to possible flocculation or welding during comminution which also increases with grinding time.

【目的】近年,時代に即した医療課題の解決のため,適切な社会医学の人材育成がなされているかを,明らかにすることを目的とした。【方法】量的調査と質的調査を行った。量的調査では,近年20年間の社会医学分野の講座名称及び教員数の変化について名簿調査を行った。質的調査では,社会医学分野の研究者・教員9名及び高等教育行政,厚生行政,医学会関係者各1名ずつの計12名に対してインタビュー調査を行った。インタビュー調査は半構造化面接の方法で行い,質的に分析した。【結果】名簿調査では,20年間のうちに,医学教育において社会医学分野の教員数に変化はないが,基礎医学・臨床医学分野を合わせた教員の全体数が増加しているため,社会医学分野の教員の割合は3.0%(521人/17,224人)から2.1%(508人/24,121人)に減少していた。インタビューでは,公衆衛生大学院の創設や社会医学専門医制度などの開始,地方自治体や国際保健において社会医学人材の活躍が期待される一方で,魅力ある教育プログラムやキャリアパスのイメージが示されていないこと,実践現場と研究・教育の乖離などの課題が明らかとなった。【結論】量的・質的分析を合わせた結果,1)新たな課題に取り組む人材育成のため教育・専門医制度などの質の保証の充実,2)社会医学の可能性を伝え参入する若手を増やすための方策強化,3)現場と研究,教育の乖離が見られるためビッグデータやグローバルヘルスを使った現場と教育と研究の統合,の3つの課題を抽出することができた。

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are a group of disorders complicated by inflammation and resultant damage of skeletal muscles without known causes. Major advances have been recently made in the field of IIMs, including new classification criteria to better identify the patients with IIMs, and discovery of detailed muscle pathologic features and myositis–specific and myositis–associated autoantibodies that facilitates subgrouping of patients into more specific clinical phenotypes. IIMs are now classified into four major subgroups, i.e., dermatomyositis (DM), anti–synthetase syndrome (ASSD), immune–mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM), and inclusion body myositis (IBM). Patients with concomitant features of other connective tissue diseases are considered overlap syndrome. Almost all patients who used to be diagnosed as having ‘polymyositis’ are now re–classified as IBM, IMNM, or ASSD. IIMs are originally characterized by the presence of myositis, but it has been recently recognized that patients with typical DM rashes or myositis–specific autoantibodies plus interstitial lung disease without apparent skeletal muscle involvement are also included in this spectrum. Recent studies evaluating immunophenotypes of individual IIM subgroups have shown distinct pathophysiologies : type I interferonopathy and activation of the complement system in DM, type II interferon activation in ASSD, autoantibody–mediated complement activation in IMNM, and a primary role of CD8+ T cells in IBM. This information is useful in developing unique therapeutic approaches to individual IIM subgroups. Although corticosteroids are still the first–line therapeutic agents, their long–term use is known to increase serious side effects that affect patients' quality of life and survival. Attempts to minimize the accumulated dosage and duration of corticosteroids has been made in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, and are now applied to patients with IIMs. For this purpose, initial combination of immunosuppressive drugs and molecular–targeting drugs is being actively introduced in the field of IIMs. Over the next few years, management of IIMs will undergo major advances and will be able to provide better medical care to the patients.

Psychrophilic and psycrotrophic organisms are important in global ecology as a large proportion of our planet is cold. Two-third of sea-water covering more than 70% of Earth is cold deep sea water with temperature around 2°C, and more than 90% of freshwater is in polar ice-sheets and mountain glaciers. Though biological activity in snow and ice had been believed to be extremely limited, various specialized biotic communities were recently discovered at glaciers of various part of the world. The glacier is relatively simple and closed ecosystem with special biotic community containing various psychrophilic and psycrotrophic organisms. Since psychrophilic organisms was discovered in the deep ice-core recovered from the antarctic ice-sheet and a lake beneath it, snow and ice environments in Mars and Europa are attracting a great deal of scientific attention as possible extraterrestrial habitats of life. This paper briefly reviews the results of the studies on ecology of psychrophilic organisms living in snow and ice environments and their physiological and biochemical adaptation to low temperature.
