科学的にも,また,文化人類学的にもアフリカのアルコール飲料の研究は魅力的である。アフリカのアルコール飲料には様々な原料が使用されており,未だに十分な調査がされていないものや希少な酒は数多い。本稿では,食事として摂取されるエチオピアの珍しいアルコール飲料について解説して頂いた。

This study focused on satisficing in online surveys—behavior in which panels do not devote an appropriate amount of attentional resources when answering questions. It carried out questionnaire surveys that could not be answered properly without closely reading the instructions and questions to empirically investigate the prevalence and patterns of satisficing. To detect satisficing tendencies, a screening survey was conducted with questions that necessitated a close reading of the instructions, while the main survey used questions that required a close reading of the item content. Identical surveys were carried out at two different survey companies, and results showed that satisficing due to skipping instructions occurs very frequently. Furthermore, while satisficing due to skipping scale items appears to be relatively rare, trends in satisficing differed between the survey companies. These results indicate one method for preventing satisficing, which was discussed in relation to the merits and demerits of screening respondents with satisficing tendencies.

Objective To investigate the causes of neurological manifestations in girls immunized with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Methods During the past nine months, 44 girls visited us complaining of several symptoms after HPV vaccination. Four patients with other proven disorders were excluded, and the remaining forty subjects were enrolled in this study. Results The age at initial vaccination ranged from 11 to 17 years, and the average incubation period after the first dose of the vaccine was 5.47±5.00 months. Frequent manifestations included headaches, general fatigue, coldness of the legs, limb pain and weakness. The skin temperature examined in 28 girls with limb symptoms exhibited a slight decrease in the fingers (30.4±2.6°C) and a moderate decrease in the toes (27.1±3.7°C). Digital plethysmograms revealed a reduced height of the waves, especially in the toes. The limb symptoms of four girls were compatible with the Japanese clinical diagnostic criteria for complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), while those in the other 14 girls were consistent with foreign diagnostic criteria for CRPS. The Schellong test identified eight patients with orthostatic hypotension and four patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The girls with orthostatic intolerance and CRPS commonly experienced transient violent tremors and persistent asthenia. Electron-microscopic examinations of the intradermal nerves showed an abnormal pathology in the unmyelinated fibers in two of the three girls examined. Conclusion The symptoms observed in this study can be explained by abnormal peripheral sympathetic responses. The most common previous diagnosis in the studied girls was psychosomatic disease. The social problems of the study participants remained unresolved in that the severely disabled girls stopped going to school.

The present study aimed to examine the antecedent conditions of pluralistic ignorance and its consequences, especially on individuals’ micro processes. Japanese college students participated in a laboratory experiment and met their partners in another room, these actually being confederates. They were asked to do some choice tasks regarding their preferences of gummy candy flavors. Next, they were led to believe that their partners made choices identical to theirs, and estimated the partners’ preferences. They were then asked to choose one flavor as a reward for themselves and their partners, and to evaluate their preferences again. The result suggested a process of the occurrence and consequences of pluralistic ignorance as follows: (1) People tend to see the choices made by others as reflections of their preferences, even when their own identical choices are made to eliminate dislikable alternatives. (2) They tend to take action as group members to meet others’ preferences, even when those are different from their own preferences. (3) When confronted with the inconsistency between their actions and preferences, people are motivated to justify their actions by changing their preferences.

調理における時間の短縮・簡略化の代表例として,米飯を冷凍保存し,電子レンジを用いて解凍する冷凍米飯が挙げられるが,アンケート調査により冷凍米飯の品質に不満を有している割合が高いことが報告されている。そこで本研究は炊飯後に米飯を冷ます工程に着目し,冷まし工程終了時と電子レンジ解凍後の含水率,物性値さらには食後の血糖値上昇度の指標となるeGI値を測定した。炊き立ての米飯の測定値を最も良い品質と仮定すると,冷まし工程を施さず,直ちに冷凍することで解凍後の含水率,かたさの全てにおいて炊き立ての数値と有意差がないことが分かった。また,冷まし工程を施す場合は冷まし工程時にラップで包装することで,炊き立ての品質に近い冷凍米飯を調製できることが示唆された。また,4種類の試料のeGI値は全て炊き立てと有意差がなかった。したがって,冷まし工程の有無に伴う米飯を摂取した際,食後の血糖値の上昇に影響を与えないことが示唆された。

IN RECENT YEARS, WOMEN HAVE GIVEN A LOT OF SUGGESTIONS ON COMMUNITY DESIGN. THIS EXPLAINS THAT CITIES HAVEN'T BEEN DESIGNED IN TERMS OF WOMEN'S STANDPOINT IN A SATISFACTORY WAY. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO ARGUE THAT WOMEN'S VIEWS ON COMMUNITY DESIGN, WHICH HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED, ARE INDISPENSABLE TO THE CITY PLANNING. IN ORDER TO BRING WOMEN'S PERSPECTIVE ON ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN INTO BOLD RELIEF, WE CHOSE TO CARRY OUT SEVERAL KINDS OF RESEARCHES ON PUBLIC TOILETS THIS TIME.

Hybrids of Rhinogobius biwaensis and Rhinogobius sp. BF were identified in the ponds of Sento Imperial Palace, Kyoto City, Japan, from microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA markers. Mitochondrial DNA analysis indicated that five of seven Rhinogobius specimens had R. biwaensis haplotypes, the remaining specimens having those of Rhinogobius sp. BF. In DAPC and STRUCTURE analyses based on microsatellite data, all specimens examined showed intermediate status between R. biwaensis and Rhinogobius sp. BF, the two species being considered to have formed a hybrid swarm in the ponds because genetically pure individuals of either were not found. This is the first report of recent hybridization under field conditions in Rhinogobius fishes from Japan, confirmed by nuclear and mitochondrial DNA data. Hybrid Rhinogobius specimens from the ponds had 5–17 predorsal scales, an intermediate range between those of non-hybrid R. biwaensis (0–6) and Rhinogobius sp. BF (11–20). However, in appearance they were more similar to R. biwaensis than Rhinogobius sp. BF, having bluish-white distal coloring anteriorly on the first and second dorsal fins, a reduced reddish longitudinal band on the anal fin, and lacking yellowish dorsal and posterior margins on the caudal fin. However, they differed from R. biwaensis in having a narrower white posterior caudal fin margin. Further morphological differentiation of the hybrid specimens was not apparent.

Adverse reactions to vaccines were examined in 311 canine cases reported to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Japan during the period of 6 years from April of 1994 to March of 2000, and classified according to their clinical symptoms. There were 27 cases of adverse reactions to rabies virus vaccines. Gastrointestinal symptoms were the most frequently observed (26%), followed by respiratory and/or cardiovascular symptoms (22%) and dermatologic symptoms (11%). There were 284 cases of adverse reactions to non-rabies monovalent vaccines and mixed vaccines. Dermatologic symptoms were the most frequently observed (53%), followed by gastrointestinal symptoms (16%) and respiratory and/or cardiovascular symptoms (14%). Of the total 311 cases, 11 (3.5%) died of adverse reactions to vaccines.

日本人が,英文の査読付き学術雑誌に論文を掲載することは容易ではない.しかしこのグローバル化した時代に,日本語で研究論文を書いていたのでは学問をしたことにはならない.高い志を持って,英語の論文に挑むべきである.英語の微妙なニュアンスがわかるまで,英語を徹底的に読むことも重要である.また若い時には,教育を犠牲にして研究に集中しなければならない.国際会議は,研究者の戦場でもあることは理解すべきである.いろいろと苦労して投稿した論文も,意地の悪いレフリーにあらを探されて棄却されてしまうことも多い.本論は,英語の論文の雑誌に掲載しようとしている研究者に,著者の経験からアドバイスをしようとするものである.

Microtensile and microfracture tests were performed on the sharp-edge regions of Japanese swords fabricated in the Muromachi and Showa periods, which are called old sword (OS) and modern sword (MS), respectively, to correlate the mechanical properties with the inhomogeneous microstructures. The hardness of the sharp-edge regions was characterised by the distribution of fine pearlite mixed in martensite microstructures. The OS containing a large fraction of fine pearlite exhibited a low hardness compared to the MS. Microtensile tests using sharp-edge specimens revealed a positive correlation between their tensile strength and strain-to-failure, as opposed to the common tendency in conventional carbon steels made by modern iron-making technology. The fracture surfaces of the sharp-edge specimens were composed of intergranular and dimple fracture features. The tensile strength and dimple fracture area fraction were higher in the OS than in the MS. These findings suggest that the fine pearlite microstructure contributes to increased strength in the sharp-edge region through inhibiting the linkage of intergranular cracking owing to local plastic deformation. Microfracture tests using the sharp-edge specimens revealed that the intrinsic fracture resistance of both OS and MS was determined by the intergranular fracture, whereas the fine pearlite microstructure increased the resistance to crack propagation. The micromechanical testing study indicates that in the sharp-edge regions, their strength and fracture toughness are simultaneously enhanced by the presence of fine pearlite although depending on its distribution.
