Curcumin has long been recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties. An antitumor effect has been recently reported in curcumin and clinical trials are being conducted. However, a large amount of required intake to obtain the antitumor effect of curcumin has been regarded as a problem. Therefore, curcumin analogs have been created by many researchers to enhance the effects of curcumin. We have synthesized >50 curcumin analogs and revealed greater growth suppression of various tumor cells with mono-carbonyl analogs than curcumin. Mechanistically, mono-carbonyl analogs inhibited transcriptional activity (e.g., nuclear factor kappa B, signal transducer, and activator of transcription 3) or activated caspase-3. Additionally, mono-carbonyl analogs of curcumin control tumor cell metabolism. Herein, we summarize the current knowledge about mono-carbonyl curcumin analogs and discuss their potential clinical applications.

本研究は、日本の歴史のなかで女性の周縁化(地位の劣化)が進行していく過程を、女性の身体に対する認識の歴史的変化に着目しつつ、医学・衛生・宗教・地域・出産/月経という主として五つの側面から検討を加えた。伝統的医学と近代医学それぞれの女性身体観、近代衛生政策における女性役割の位置づけ、仏教と神道の女性認識の変遷、血穢などに対する地域社会の対応の形成等について明らかにしえた。

The transparent communication board (TCB) is a communication tool that is commonly employed by individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Both the 50-letters and flick type TCB are prevalent in Japan. The purpose of this case study was to compare and investigate the speed of letter transmission and the subjective user impression associated with the use of the 50-letters and flick type TCB in ALS patients. The study included four ALS patients and four caregivers, who acted as communication partners. Participants used the 50-letters and flick type TCB at intervals ranging from one week to 90 days. They received video instructions on how to use each type of TCB and tried to transmit a total of 18 Japanese letters. We measured the time taken to transmit each word and the number of errors. Additionally, the participants were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their subjective impressions of the TCB. Compared with the 50-letters type, the ALS patients and their partners tended to make fewer errors and preferred the flick type of TCB. However, the 50-letters type was easier to use to communicate if the patient and partner were not familiar with the flick type sequence. Our data suggest that the age of the patient and their partner, as well as the amount of experience using a smartphone, should be considered when choosing a TCB.

This article discusses the obstacles to the realization of harmonious coexistence in a human society that purportedly advocates egalitarianism. Focusing on the issues regarding sexual minorities and empirical studies on the prejudice against them, the author argues that simplistic egalitarianism does not work well when the acceptance of dissimilar others, who embrace a totally different mentality and orientation, is associated with threats to one's established values and worldviews constituting the very basis of one's identity. Among people with such a rigid sense of identity, this evokes despisement and the desire for expulsion of the minority group. The author concludes that restructuring one's identity is a promising way to solve the problem.

誰もが知っている古典といえば、『竹取物語』である。竹取の翁とかぐや姫を中心に、難題求婚譚、申し子譚、そして羽衣説話に通じる物語の構成をなしているものである。中には、平安文化を象徴する「あはれ」を思わせる内容も含まれ、『源氏物語』において「物語出来きはじめの祖」と称されるに至っているのは周知のことである。本研究においては、その『竹取物語』について、かぐや姫という存在に焦点をあて、考察している。具体的には、「かぐや姫が翁の元に現れ、再び月の世界へと帰っていくという流離の秘密を探り、かぐや姫が月の世界で犯した「罪」は何か、それに対する「罰」は何かについて考察する」という研究主題を設定し、『竹取物語』の世界観をもとにしながら研究を進めた。最終的には、かぐや姫の「罪」と「罰」について筆者自身の結論を導き出した。

The year 1609 marks the emergence of the newspaper in Europe with the publication of Relation in Strasbourg and Aviso in Wolfenbüttel. The expansion of the periodical information paper brought enormous ideological change to the European society in the age of the Enlightenment, laying the foundation for the social and political upheavals of the modern era. In Switzerland with Zurich as its cultural centre, newspapers began to be published 1621 at first on a weekly basis, and then became daily publications. This dramatically affected the flow of information within society, and made ideas and facts more permanent and easily accessible in the public domain in Switzerland. In Zurich, one of the representative newspapers was the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, which was founded in 1780 and continues to be in circulation until this day. This newspaper is one of only about 40 papers in the world today to still be in circulation after a tradition of more than 200 years of publication and is counted as a quality paper for intellectuals in spite of its small circulation numbers. In this paper, focus will be placed on discussing the history of Swiss and German newspapers as, to date, little research has been conducted on the historical development of these newspapers, especially in comparison to their English counterparts. Such a discussion is vital to better understand the impact of such media on society in Europe and could lead to the possibility of future comparative research on the influence of different information flows in media history in European countries.

東日本を中心とする遺跡出土イネ種子の形態・DNA分析、炭素窒素安定同位体比分析を通じて品種の歴史的展開の時期や内容を明らかにした。また、稲作の導入期にあたる岩木山麓の弥生時代前半期の遺跡発掘調査を実施した。その結果、東北で最古の水田跡が見つかっている砂沢遺跡において微細土壌分析による水田の形成過程および集落の南限が明らかになった。また清水森西遺跡において弥生時代前期の砂沢遺跡と中期中葉の垂柳遺跡の間の時期にあたる稲作集落が検出された。電子顕微鏡・X線CT観察による土器のイネ種子圧痕を検出した。以上よりこれまで不明瞭だった前期から中期の大規模水稲農耕への変遷モデルを作成可能となった。

本稿では,地域日本語教育のあり方と,そこに関わる人材に必要とされる資質・能力,及びそれら人材の育成内容と方法について検討した。地域日本語教育は社会参加のための言語保障と地域社会の変革を目指して実施される相互学習とを包含したシステムとして位置づけられ,そのシステムを機能させるための専門職を配置し体制を整備することが不可欠である。地域日本語教育に関わる人材は専門職としてのシステム・コーディネーター,地域日本語コーディネーター,地域日本語教育専門家の3者と,日本語ボランティアとに分けられ,それぞれの役割に応じて求められる資質・能力と育成内容は異なるが,育成方法としては現場主義,振り返り,共有と協働,継続性といった点が共通して重視される。また,地域日本語教育において指摘される参加者間の非対称性の問題を人材育成の観点から打開する視点として,外国人等人材の育成と,実践の振り返りの徹底が挙げられる。

小笠原諸島では、無人島を含めたいくつかの島でネコが野生化している。一般に海洋島の動物は、捕食性哺乳類が不在の環境で進化してきているため、移入捕食者により個体群が大きな影響を受けることが少なくない。そこで、小笠原諸島においてネコが在来生態系に与える影響を評価する基礎資料とするため、母島において野外で採集したネコの糞分析を行った。その結果、ネズミ類が食物の大きな割合を占めているが、海鳥の繁殖地周辺では同頻度で海鳥を捕食していることが明らかになった。また、絶滅危惧IB類であるオガサワラカワラヒワを含め、トカゲ類や昆虫類、甲殻類など、多様な動物を採食していることが明らかとなった。母島南部はオガサワラカワラヒワの島内における主要な生息地であり、また海鳥繁殖地もあることから、特にこの地域で野生化したネコを積極的に管理する必要がある。

In recent years, the number of cancer survivors has been increasing each year due to advances in the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Cancer survivors present a variety of physical and psychological complications due to cancer and its treatment. Physical exercise is an effective nonpharmacological treatment for complications in cancer survivors. Furthermore, recent evidence has shown that physical exercise improves the prognosis of cancer survivors. The benefits of physical exercise have been widely reported, and guidelines for physical exercise for cancer survivors have been published. These guidelines recommend that cancer survivors engage in moderate- or vigorous-intensity aerobic exercises and/or resistance training. However, many cancer survivors have a poor commitment to physical exercise. In the future, it is necessary to promote physical exercise among cancer survivors through outpatient rehabilitation and community support.
