Posturography is considered to be useful for analyses of equilibrium disturbance. There are various ways of analyzing body sway. Recently the author measured the deviation of body sway to evaluate the roles of proprioceptors of the neck and extrinsic eye muscles and examined the velocity of body sway to observe the characteristics of equilibrium disturbance in general.(1) The relationship between the direction of the head and the deviation of body sway was observed. When a subject turned his head to the right, the center of his body sway often deviated to the left. Similarly, when he turned his head to the left, the the center of his body sway often deviated to the right. This tendency was observed frequently in sportsmen, but scarcely observed in normal subjects.(2) Smilary, the relationship between the direction of eyes and the direction of body sway was observed. The center of body sway often deviated to the opposite side of the direction of eyes.(3) The velocity of body sway to the back was faster than to the front in the majority of healthy people with eyes closed, but in patients with labyrinthine disorder, the velocity to the front was faster than to the back.(4) Severe stimulation with an air caloric system (24°C, 40sec.) on labyrinthines of healthy people with eyes closed increased the velocity to the back, but weak stimulation (30°C, 5-10sec.) often increased the velocity to the front.

Body-sway measurements have been used as one of the methods to diagnose equilibrium disorders. A qualitative evaluation of unique body-sway characteristics of patients with specific disorders has been chiefly used. Recently, quantitatively and objectively evaluating body-sway has been advocated. This evaluation method can diagnose healthy people's body functions and has been noted as an effective body-sway method. However, methods that evaluate body-sway are not necessarily rationally united. In addition, although many evaluation parameters have been proposed, they have not been arranged objectively. It may be important to examine the following two points to rationally establish an evaluation method of the healthy people's body-sway. One is to arrange traditional evaluation methods and measurement conditions used in the past and to clarify the factors related to body-sway. Another is to carefully examine effective evaluation parameters for healthy people and set a proper evaluation criterion after inspecting their statistical validity and reliability. These general remarks clarify the above two points through a comprehensive literature review, and introduce a simple and rational evaluation methods of healthy people's health states in addition to upright standing posture control based on their body -sway.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs on the solar array due to space plasma interaction. It is considered that solar cell suffers degradation of electric performance, once ESD occurs at the solar cell edge. In order to study the degradation of solar cell electrical performance, we performed ESD tests on Si solar cell in a vacuum chamber. After the ESD tests the solar cell maximum power decreased. We found the damage on surface electrode in the vicinity of ESD spot. Infrared emission due to current leak was found at the spot. The solar cell degraded due to the leak resistance produced by ESD.

サンゴを含むサンゴ礁の多くの動物は,褐虫藻と呼ばれる藻類と共生している。しかしこの共生藻を親から受け継ぐことは希で,多くの場合,環境中から褐虫藻を取り込む。従って,サンゴ礁には単独の褐虫藻が存在しなければならない。この共生ソースとなる褐虫藻は,サンゴ同様に褐虫藻を体内に共生させる「シャコガイ」から排出されてきたものかもしれない。実際,シャコガイの糞には生きた状態の褐虫藻が密に詰まっている。この研究ではシャコガイの糞に含まれる褐虫藻を詳細に調べ,シャコガイの幼生とサンゴの幼生に糞を与え,褐虫藻が感染するか調べた。その結果,何れもが糞に由来する褐虫藻を取込み,共生が成立可能であることがわかった。

ここ数年,複写機や多機能型プリンタの用紙搬送技術は目覚ましい進歩を遂げ,特に用紙搬送の信頼性につながる紙詰まり(ジャム)や斜め走行(スキュー)はシミュレーションも使いながら大きく改善されてきた.しかし,信頼性改善や低コスト化だけでなく,高画質カラー印刷への適用,用紙搬送に伴う騒音低減,機外への漏れ音と機内温昇間の改善など,将来に向けたいくつかの重要な問題が残っている.最終的に本解説では,用紙搬送の基本原則の解説に止まらず,システム全体の最適設計のためには用紙搬送に伴う機内温昇や機外漏れ音といった二次障害の解決が必要である点を述べている.加えて,用紙搬送における数値解析を活用したいくつかの研究事例を解説する.

Cymbals are thin domed plates used as percussion instruments. When cymbals are stuck, they vibrate and radiate sound. Cymbals are made through spin forming, hammering, and lathing. The sound radiated from a cymbal depends on its vibration characteristics that are determined by the shape and dimension. The hammering produces plastic deformation on the cymbal's surface, generating residual stresses throughout it. Although the vibration characteristics are changed by the hammering to adjust cymbal sound, the effect of the hammering on the cymbal sound is not clear. In this paper, we reveal the effect of the hammering on the vibration and the sound radiation characteristics. The stress distribution within the cymbal produced by hammering is reproduced by thermal stress analysis and the change in natural frequency of the modes are calculated by the vibration analysis with the stress distribution. The change (i.e., increase or decrease) in natural frequency for each mode is explained by the stress and modal strain energy distributions.

It was in his monographic essay titled “Westphalia and All That” that international relations scholar Steven D. krasner criticized the “orthodox” view that the peace of Westphalia of 1648 marks the end of the old medieval world and the beginning of a new era in international relations history. Leo Gross, a prominent internationa law expert, had similarly maintained that Westphalia was the starting point for the development of modern international law and that it was “the majestic portal which leads from the old into the new world”. Krasner rejected both the “orthodox” and Gross' views as “wrong”.Krasner's criticism is based on three propositions; 1) “History is not so neatly compartmentalized”; Westphalia was neither an end nor a beginning; 2) The basic issue at Westphalia was not so much one of building a new international order based on sovereign equality of states as a more reaistic one of how the Holy Roman Empire, which had lost the war, would satisfy France and Sweden, which had won; 3)Contrary to the “orthodox” view, Westphalia was “past-oriented”, in the sense that most of the issues taken up there were those of the feudal period, such as hereditary succession, composition of the Diet, election of the Empperor, etc.The purpose of the present study is to place the “orthodox” and Gross' views against the background of Krasner's criticism in an effort to judge which side can provide more adequate and convincing evidence for a satisfactory interpretation of Westphalia. By employing what we propose to call a “symbolic monument” approach, which “constructs” history by connecting historical evidence with interpretation, we have examined such issues as the role of “world charters”, laicization of international law, the system of collective security, and the policy of prestige and diplomatic formalities, and arrived at the conclusion that the “orthodox” and Gross' views are convincing enough to warrant full recognition, while krasner fails to “construct” his own history to make his criticism meaningful. Criticism for the sake of criticism alone does not lead to a discerning knowledge and evaluation of historical realities. “Construction” of history must accompany criticism.We fully share, however, Krasner's admonition that history is not so neatly compartmentalized, and probably it is through the sharing of this admonition with him that a diaogue will begin between us.

本研究では、水辺空間の管理の問題を明らかにする。そのために水辺空間のタイプ別の管理実態と、住民団体との関係性の把握を行った。水辺空間を水遊びの有無と水生生物の有無で分類を行った。水遊びのできる水辺空間では塩素消毒による問題がある。水生生物のいる水辺空間では水生生物の大量発生などの問題がある。行政と住民団体との連携では水辺空間に関わる住民団体が少ないことが問題である。これらの問題を解決するために、本研究では、行政と周辺住民や住民団体との連携を提案し、今後の水辺空間の管理の方向性を見出す。

Strip walking is an unstable lateral movement in a hot strip finishing mill that causes the strip to crash into the side guides, resulting in a tail pinch where the strip is rolled in a folded state. Strip walking should be appropriately controlled to prevent tail pinches, and an adequate mathematical model is essential to design the strip steering control. In this paper, the traditional model and a recently proposed model representing strip walking are numerically compared, and the latter is shown to characterize the details of the actual phenomenon. Such a mathematical model derivation makes it possible to use model predictive control to optimally control the strip walking, considering the rate limit constraint of the actuator. However, model predictive control requires time-consuming optimization computation. Thus, control performance deteriorates with longer control periods. In this paper, we propose a new model prediction control method to reduce optimization computation time with discretized control input that enables fast discrete optimization instead of slow continuous optimization. It is also shown that fixing the misalignment between the roll and steel strip centers is insufficient to prevent the tail pinch. Moreover, it is vital to suppress the rotational motion of the steel strip by using numerical simulations.

This research note aims to produce a lead for future theoretical and empirical research projects on stewardship theory. In contrast to agency theory, which views human beings as opportunistic and self-interested, stewardship theory argues that people are selfactualizing and good stewards in nature, thus they are motivated to work hard for their company and to look after its interests and those of its shareholders. It is a relatively new management theory, and most of the empirical studies conducted to date have focused on corporate governance, i. e., relations between CEO duality/board compositions, and organizational outcomes, especially financial performance. However, more research is required to identify new constructs and their interactions, and to delineate theoretical details. The paper presents what we know about stewardship theory including psychological and structural components, literature reviews and implications for the future research from the perspective of integrating agency and stewardship theories.

芝棟に関する既往研究を整理し,現地調査により,芝棟の現存状況と芝棟植物の分布特性が明らかとなった.芝棟は,岩手・青森県を中心とした東日本に約600棟が現存しており,そのうちの9割は岩手県に現存している.岩手・青森県を除く都府県では,芝棟の多くが文化財等に指定され,保存されていた.しかし,文化財等に指定されている建造物であっても,芝棟を維持できなくなっているものもあった.芝棟植物の分布については,シバは芝棟が分布する全地域に見られ,東北地方太平洋側と内陸山間部では,ユリ・カンゾウ・ネギ・ニラが,関東平野部ではイチハツが,関東山地周辺ではイワヒバが多く見られた.

The object of this short paper is to show a possibility for the historical approach to launch a research program in "Science for Policy in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy." How does writing a history resolve such highly modem problems as related to "Science and Technology" as well as "Innovation"? To answer this question, this paper proposes the method I would name "contemporary historical approach as a policy study." Obtaining policy expertise on science and technology has mostly depended upon the social sciences like economics and management, and other science studies. However, I would like to suggest that the historical approach is no less powerful than quantitative examinations by other social sciences for two reasons. First, policy-related investigations usually focus on what has happened during the recent couple decades, whose description itself can be regarded as a "contemporary history." Second, the evidence-based historical account can instill a sense of "reality" to understanding the background of policy analysis. The contemporary historical approach I would propose is not a simple reproduction of our past experiences. It would be most important to do as much data-collection and fact-findings as possible, to exploit memories of the interviewed persons, and to select only meaningful facts out of them. In so doing, this approach would bring in more realistic explanations to the current policy studies.
