This article examines the following three aspects of teaching English pronunciation at secondary schools in Japan: 1)which features of pronunciation are actually taught and which are not; 2) which problems are caused by this; and 3)which measures can or should be taken to solve the problems. In each aspect above, single sounds, word/phrase/sentence stresses and intonation are taken into account. Very little time is devoted to teaching pronunciation, and sadly awareness of the importance of pronunciation among pupils/students is quite low. In order to improve the situation, remedies, such as phonics-based instruction, are proposed.

Twenty specimens of Acentrogobius ocyurus (Jordan and Seale, 1907) were collected in Manko, Okinawa-jima Island, Japan and Sulu Sea side of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan Island, Philippines. As the species had previously been reported from the South China Sea, Andaman Sea, and northern Australian waters, these specimens from Okinawa and Palawan represent the first records of the species from Japan and the Sulu Sea. Acentrogobius ocyurus was found on muddy substrata at the lowest tidal zone of the mudflat and was often found in burrows of mangrove pistol shrimp, Alpheus richardsoni Yaldwyn, 1971. Morphological traits suggested that A. ocyurus is closely related to A. globiceps (Hora, 1923), A. kranjiensis (Herre, 1940), and Acentrogobius sp. (“Suzume-haze” in Japanese name), with several homologous features including, the transverse pattern of the sensory papillae on the cheek, caudal fin pointed in middle, a black stripe behind the eye along the anterior oculoscapular canal, bright blue spots laterally on the body, and an oblique yellow stripe across the upper part of the caudal fin.

「筑波病」は筑波研究学園都市における自殺症候群である.現代精神医学では,自殺はうつ病・分裂病に深くかかわるとされ,これらの精神病は脳内神経伝達物質の代謝活性異常を反映する病気であることが解明されている.実験動物へのある種の化学物質の投与でうつ病・分裂病症状が導かれ,同じく,ある種の情報の入力・遮断によってもほぼ同質の症状が発現される.これは,脳が物質的環境入力と同様に情報的環境入力の影響を受けることを示す.このことからみても,これまでの環境を物質・エネルギーという尺度でとらえる態度から,それらに情報を加えた総合的な視座で環境をとらえる態度に早急に切り換えねばならない.この観点から,著者らは情報環境学の体系化を進めている.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is commonly recognized as the consequence of coronary atherosclerosis and obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). However, a significant number of patients may present angina or myocardial infarction even in the absence of any significant coronary artery stenosis and impairment of the coronary microcirculation has been increasingly implicated as a relevant cause of IHD. The term “coronary microvascular dysfunction” (CMD) encompasses several pathogenic mechanisms resulting in functional and/or structural changes in the coronary microcirculation and determining angina and myocardial ischemia in patients with angina without obstructive CAD (“primary” microvascular angina), as well as in several other conditions, including obstructive CAD, cardiomyopathies, Takotsubo syndrome and heart failure, especially the phenotype with preserved ejection fraction. The pathogenesis of CMD is complex and involves the combination of functional and structural alterations leading to impaired coronary blood flow and resulting in myocardial ischemia. In the absence of therapies specifically targeting CMD, attention has been focused on the role of modifiable risk factors. Here, we provide updated evidence regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying CMD, with a particular focus on the role of cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities. Moreover, we discuss the specific pathogenic mechanisms of CMD across the different cardiovascular diseases, aiming to pave the way for further research and the development of novel strategies for a precision medicine approach.

We investigated possible sources of newly infected patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) after the fourth wave in order to explore unknown sources. Retrospective chart review on all the confirmed patients with COVID-19 admitted to the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM) in Tokyo, Japan was conducted from May 22 through June 29, 2021. Among the 22 participants, 14 (64%) had a history of known high-risk infection behaviors. Of those, 12 reported that their activities involved eating and drinking. In addition, there were 24 high-risk situations, of those, 21 (88%) were related to indoor dining, and masks were not worn in 22 situations (92%). New source of infection has not been identified. In situations with a high known risk of infection, many cases were related to eating and drinking, and insufficient use of masks was evident. Raising risk awareness on infection prevention and control of COVID-19 is urgently needed.

Peter Kivy claims, from his early works, that music cannot arouse “garden-variety emotion” such as joy, anger, fear, sadness. According to him, the emotion aroused by music is a special “musical emotion”; the object of this emotion is always music. This claim seems to be counterintuitive and thus elicits many objections from philosophers, musicologists, psychologists, neuroscientists, and artists. However, I will argue that Kivy’s position is most plausible given the philosophy of emotion. Especially, I will show that there is no emotion deserving to be called “sadness” that is aroused by music. By appealing to philosophical considerations on emotion, I will support the following two points that Kivy emphasizes. The first is the lack of an object. There are no sad things (no loss) while we listen to music. If sadness does not occur, the lack of an object makes no matter. The second point is the paradox of negative emotion. Sadness has a negative value and we prefer to avoid it. If we can accept this, why then, are we willing to listen to music that make us sad? Again, if sadness does not occur, there arises no paradox.

情報工学科におけるICT教育において,OSとプログラミングは重要事項である。現在,これらの内容を教育する際には,UNIXやC言語といった,長い歴史を有し高度に発展したものを用いることが多いが,これらは完成度が高いがゆえに理解が困難になっている側面がある。本稿では,こういった問題を克服する取り組みとして,1970年代に実際に現場で使われたOSとプログラミング言語であるUNIX第一版と初期のC言語を用いた教育を紹介する。これらを通じて,学生は,現在は複雑化したUNIXやC言語も当初は簡素なものであったことを理解し,ある程度の親しみを感じると同時に,現在のOSやC言語の有用さを感じることができるようになったことを示す。

An outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which began in Wuhan, China in December 2019, has rapidly spread all over the world. The World Health Organization characterized the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) as a pandemic in March 2020. In the absence of specific treatments for the virus, treatment options are being examined. Drug repurposing is a process of identifying new therapeutic uses for approved drugs. It is an effective strategy to discover drug molecules with new therapeutic indications. This strategy is time-saving, low-cost, and has a minimal risk of failure. Several existing approved drugs such as chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, doxycycline, azithromycin, and ivermectin are currently in use because of their efficacy in inhibiting COVID-19. Multidrug therapy, such as a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, a combination of doxycycline and ivermectin, or a combination of ivermectin, doxycycline, and azithromycin, has been successfully administered. Multidrug therapy is efficacious because the mechanisms of action of these drugs differ. Moreover, multidrug therapy may prevent the emergence of drug-resistant SARS-CoV-2.

【目的】YouTube で公開された脳卒中のリハビリテーション関連の動画の質を評価することとした。【方法】2021 年1 月にYouTube を使用して,脳卒中とリハビリテーションのキーワードから動画検索を行った。Journal of the American Medical Association Score(以下,JAMAS)と日本語版DISCERN を用いて,抽出されたYouTube 動画の質を評価した。【結果】JAMAS 合計は2.5 点,引用文献や情報源に関する記載を示すAttribution は平均0.2 点と低かった。DISCERN 合計は32.8 点,治療の情報源,リスク,選択肢に関する項目の平均点は2.0 点未満であった。【結論】YouTube における脳卒中のリハビリテーション関連の動画は全体的に低品質であった。多くの動画が,情報源や治療の選択肢,リスクに関する情報を提供できていないことが明らかになった。

Biological invasions by non-indigenous populations are one of the most serious problems for the conservation of genetic resources in natural environments, due to the likelihood of such populations becoming established and negatively impacting the genetic integrity of indigenous populations through hybridization and introgression. In central Japan, freshwater fish populations have been isolated by the Ibuki-Suzuka mountains between the Ise Bay basin (Gifu, Mie and Aichi prefectures on the eastern side of the mountains) and Lake Biwa water system (Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka and other prefectures on the western side), subsequently becoming genetically divergent. On the other hand, nonindigenous populations of freshwater fishes have been introduced to the rivers of the Ise Bay basin as a consequence of transplantation of commercially important Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) being accompanied by other species from Lake Biwa. Because some serious genetic disturbance of some species has already been reported from the former system, it is necessary to clarify the magnitude of such invasions and introduce measures for the conservation of native populations. This study focused on Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis, one of the most common local fishes, which exhibits genetic differentiation between the Ise Bay basin and Lake Biwa system populations. Due to the superficial similarity between Japanese dace and Ayu, a bycatch of the former has been transported with Ayu from Lake Biwa to the other areas. To understand the magnitude of invasions from Lake Biwa, the PCR-RFLP method was used to discriminate between indigenous and non-indigenous mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes of Japanese dace in Gifu Prefecture rivers of the Ise Bay basin. Non-indigenous mtDNA haplotypes (Lake Biwa types) were found to be highly abundant in dam reservoirs, while less so in rivers, suggesting that Lake Biwa dace more easily adapt to the lacustrine environment of dam reservoirs than to river environments.

A concept of PAR (Power Augmented Ram Wing) is presented. It will be useful in future for over-water transport vehicles to carry passengers, cargos, and/or cars. It is much faster than ships, while it requires no run-way in contrast to airplanes. The PAR concept makes the fuselage-shape “aero-configured” rather than “hydro-configured”, and so decreases the parasite-drag singificantly. An empirical formula is found for the effective aspect ratio which is applicable to verious kinds of Ground Effect Wings. The present PAR concept has a variable geometry wing, in front of which tiltable turboprop engines are installed. Untill the take-off speed is exceeded, the wing is swept-forward with extended full span flaps (the outer ones are differential flaps). In cruising condition the wing becomes unswept. If the sea-state is bad the vehicle can fly off-ground effect with unswept wing. Thus cancelling operations is much more reduced than hovercrafts or hydrofoil-boats. Special devices are proposed for the tip-floats, which improve aero-dynamic efficiency and which alleviate load due to wave-impacts.

Inexpensive implementation of localization and environment mapping are critical issues for urban autonomous driving. We present a practical and low-cost navigation architecture to fuse different data from vehicle onboard sensors and estimate the vehicle state when individual observations such as GPS are noisy. We are trying to compensate the GPS errors by data fusion from different sensors in a probabilistic way and a particle filter with joint observations model has been proposed. We have evaluated the feasibility of proposed localization and navigation architecture for fully autonomous driving by doing many experiments in our campus including up and down slopes.
