The question of whether Lawrence's metaphysics can be found in his early novels is still a matter of controversy. The aim of this paper is to clarify the first development of Lawrence's metaphysics in his early works, The White Peacock and Sons and Lovers.The important point to note is that both the protagonists of these two novels, Cyril and Paul, execute paintings of Nethermere. This might suggest that Paul's painting is a repetition of Cyril's. However, their paintings are not the same. While Cyril's painting is a mere representation, Paul's is a repetition incorporating difference, which, as Gilles Deleuze says, is the antithesis of representation or“repetition of the Same.”Taking these points as a basis, this paper shows. that this difference is the metaphysical difference offered in Lawrence's work. Thus the world of representation that has been presented up to that point in Sons and Lovers is overturned by Paul's painting, which conceals difference under its repetition.

The Syriac word for ‘spirit’, ruha, which is grammatically feminine like Hebrew ruah, had a great influence on the understanding of the Holy Spirit in the early Syriac Christianity. From the early fifth century onwards, under the increasing prestige of Greek culture, some people began to disapprove of treating the Holy Spirit as feminine, and the word ruha began to be treated as masculine wherever it referred to the Holy Spirit, even by ignoring the grammatical rules of the language. However, many feminine images and metaphors survived and had continuously been used to express the character of the Holy Spirit. Especially, the tradition to understand the Holy Spirit as mother was very strong. By using many maternal images, such as hovering (like a mother bird) and womb, Syriac Christians got a better understanding of the Holy Spirit. It is important for us to be aware of, and to have a sensitivity to, this female imagery already present in the Syriac Christian tradition, for only by gaining this sensitivity, we can attain to a better appreciation of the fullness of the Holy Spirit, not only in its fatherly character but also in its motherly character.

<p>食品等から分離した酵母について,塩基配列解析法と市販同定キット(API 20C AUX)の同定結果を比較した比較した.1)酵母84株の酵母についてrDNA2領域の塩基配列解析法による同定を行った結果,基準株との塩基配列比較により,全ての株について同定が可能であった.2)API 20C AUX と塩基配列解析法の結果一致率は,種レベルでは57.1%,属レベルでは82.1%であった.3)API 20C AUXと塩基配列解析法の一致率について,キットが示す同定確率を基に比較したところ,同定確率が80%以上では属レベル,90%以上では種レベルで一致する確率が高くなる傾向が見られた. また,塩基配列解析で<i>Candida intermedia</i>/<i>C. pseudointermedia</i> を示した株の一部は,API 20C AUX 上では同定確率90%以上で<i>T. mucoides</i> を示した.以上の結果から,食品由来の酵母の同定にAPI 20C AUXを利用するには,キットが示す同定確率などを指標にするとともに,rDNA2領域の塩基配列解析法を併用することが望ましいと考えられた.</p>

Mechanical energy is known to be transferred between a body segment and a joint. However, the transformation of this energy has not been classified. By focusing on the racquet-holding arm during a tennis serve, the present study examined the transformation between translational and rotational energies due to the joint force, and investigated the kinetic chain from the viewpoint of energetics. Twenty-two tennis players were asked to perform flat services to the deuce side (i.e., the receiver's right side), and the three-dimensional coordinates of reflective markers attached to each player and racquet were collected with a motion capture system. The mechanical power acting on each segment and the mechanical energy generated/absorbed by each joint were divided into the following components: (1) STP=the time rate of change in the rotational energy of a segment due to the joint torque, (2) JTP=the generation/absorption of rotational energy due to the joint torque, (3) JFPt=the time rate of change in the translational energy of a segment due to the joint force, and (4) JFPr=the time rate of change in the rotational energy of a segment due to the moment of the joint force. The findings are summarized below. 1.  The proposed method can divide the power acting on the segment due to joint force into the translational component (JFPt) and the rotational component (JFPr). 2.  The racquet-holding arm mainly acquires mechanical energy as translational energy with decreasing rotational energy of the upper trunk (around right-leftward rotation). 3.  The main role of the shoulder joint is not to generate rotational energy but to change the energy form (from translational energy to rotational energy). 4.  The main role of the phase before most of the shoulder external rotation is to store the translational energy in the racquet-holding arm. 5.  The main role of the phase after most of the shoulder external rotation is to transfer the translational and rotational energies to the racquet. 6.  The proposed method can quantify not only the generation/absorption and transmission of mechanical energy but also the transformation of the energy form. Therefore, this method may produce new findings that have not yet been clarified.

リップ・ヴァン・ウィンクルに当たる日本の伝説の主人公、浦嶋児は漁夫であった。或る日、釣果を得ぬままに、彼はどこまでも漕ぎつづけ、ついに美しい亀を釣りあげたが、その亀は海神の娘だった。海界(うなさか)の彼方で、おのが正体を彼に示した娘は、彼を自分の家に案内した。すなわち、漁夫は他界へと入った。現実のこの世界に帰還した時、浦嶋児はリップ・ヴァン・ウィンクルと全く同様に、この世と他界との間の時間経過の相違を体験しなければならなかった。しかし、浦嶋児伝説にはリップ・ヴァン・ウィンクル伝説とは異なるいくつかの要因があり、それらの要因は日本の文化的なアスペクトによって、とりわけ日本的な霊魂観と他界観によって条件付けられている。本稿の目的は、浦嶋児伝説の検討を通じて、その霊魂観・他界観を明らかにすることにある。

Javaの高速化の研究が盛んになされているが,数値計算の分野では依然Fortranに水をあけられたままである.その理由の1つに,浮動小数点演算の厳密な正確さ(accuracy)が原因で最適化が困難なことがある.とりわけ,融合型積和演算(fused multiply-add (FMA))命令や,再結合(reassociation)を利用できないことが,Javaの性能に大きく影響している.この論文では,浮動小数点演算の正確さに関する投機(floating-point (FP) speculation)を提案する.FP speculationは,既存アーキテクチャの余ったハードウェア資源(浮動小数点レジスタと演算ユニット)を利用して,各最適化対象に対し正確さの異なる2通りの計算(投機計算と検算)を同時に実行することで,Javaの言語仕様を満たしつつ平均実行時間を短縮する.

日本国内において,二輪車は嗜好性の強い乗り物という位置付けである.しかし二輪車はエネルギ利用効率が比較的高く,コンパクトであるため,移動手段として魅力的である.二輪車を誰にとっても安全で便利な乗り物とするよう,二輪車用姿勢制御装置を考案し調査を行った.本報では装置の概説と得られる効果の予測を示す.

リアクションホイール等による倒立振子の安定の為には質点の重心ズレが微小となるような制限が与えられていた。重心投影点が支持領域外でも静的安定させるためには、倒れる方向への力のモーメントを克服するためのトルカが必要となる。従って、本研究の狙いとしては、非接触・無支持かつ一定の方向に、持続的にトルクを発生させる装置の開発を目的とした基礎研究を行い、可能性を検討した。

Sandfish (Scincus scincus), which is kind of reptile living in desert, can move in sand like swimming. It is thought that since sandfish has a low friction scales, it is able to do that. However, the mechanism of the low friction property of the scales is not yet known. In this study, a micro structure of sandfish’s scales was investigated, and their tribological properties under μN loads were measured. Cuticle-like structure, which is observed on human hairs, appeared on the scales. Detected elements on the scales were O, C, N, and S. Ca and Si, which are elements of hard shells and bones, were not detected. A contact angle of sandfish’s scale was around 90º, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyimide (PI) had contact angles of approximately 110º and 60º, respectively. However, an adhesion force of sandfish’s scales was lower than those of PTFE and PI. With the exception of a few frictional conditions, a friction force of sandfish’s scales was lower than those of PTFE and PI, which would result from the low adhesion force of sandfish’s scales.

This research is going to deal with the characteristics of Chinese immigrants. It will make use of the movie titled THE JOY LUCK CLUB. This unusually named club is a group of four mothers who enjoy playing mahjong regularly. They have been playing the game for as many as thirty years, since they migrated to San Francisco from China. They eat food or snacks they cook for themselves and chat and gossip while playing. The stories of how they had to emigrate from their home country is told through their chatting. The movie shows that each of the mothers has her own sad background. Another important topic they always discuss is their family stories, especially those of their special daughters. The movie describes one story after another of how each mother experienced hardship in her younger days in China, and how she is now struggling with new problems related to the generation gap. Their history and struggles are the history and struggles characteristic of Chinese immigration to America. Since other ways of immigrating to America (such as from England, Ireland, or Poland) were analyzed in Gakuen No. 798, issued last April, comparison with that analysis and the difference from immigration types of other ethnic groups will be researched. This will reveal the different characteristics as well as similarities of Chinese immigration from that of immigrants from other countries.

食品成分の代謝には、宿主の代謝のみならず、腸内細菌による代謝が少なからず関わっている。したがって、腸内細菌による食品成分の代謝を把握し、代謝産物が健康に与える影響を評価することが、健康維持のためにも重要である。本総説では、脂質、特に不飽和脂肪酸の代謝に関する最近の知見について紹介する。食用油脂に広く含まれているリノール酸が腸内細菌の代表でもある乳酸菌により飽和化される新規な代謝が見出され、水酸化脂肪酸、オキソ脂肪酸、共役脂肪酸などが代謝中間体として存在し、さらにこれらの代謝中間体が宿主組織において腸内細菌依存的に存在することが明らかとなった。また、これらの代謝中間体が、脂質代謝改善作用、抗糖尿病作用、腸管上皮バリア保護機能、抗炎症作用、抗酸化作用など、様々な生理機能を有することも見出している。これらの知見は、腸内細菌の脂肪酸代謝に依存して生成する特異な脂肪酸が、宿主の健康に何らかの影響を与えている可能性を示している。さらに、様々な不飽和脂肪酸代謝に関わる乳酸菌由来酵素群を活用することにより、様々な修飾脂肪酸を生産することが可能となることから、今後さらなる機能性脂肪酸開発が期待される。
