The proper use of condoms is one of the most effective types of protection against HIV. One of the major factors that negatively affect the use of condoms is embarrassment caused by using or negotiating to use condoms. To clarify the causes and effects of embarrassment on using or negotiating to use condoms, 186 undergraduate student volunteers were investigated. The results showed that patterns of types of embarrassment were unclear when they used or negotiated to use condoms. Moreover, structural equation modeling revealed that the embarrassment felt by males was strongly promoted by apprehension of the partner's evaluation, while the embarrassment felt by females was strongly promoted by vagueness in the kind of guidelines aimed at behavior regarding condom use or negotiation to use condoms. Implications of this study on HIV prevention, especially the intervention method of promoting condom use or negotiation to use condoms, are also discussed.

Volcanic ash particles originating from the eruptions of Mt. Sakurajima (31.59°N, 130.66°E) were observed with Mie lidar at an altitude of 1.6-2.3 km over Saga (33.24°N, 130.29°E) on 21 and 22 August, 2013. The lidar data showed a high depolarization ratio (10-15 %) and a moderately low backscatter wavelength exponent (0.6-0.7), indicating the presence of supermicrometer-sized nonspherical particles. The aerosol optical thicknesses at 500 nm derived from the skyradiometer were 0.12 on 21 August (13 : 50 LT) and 0.40 on 22 August (12 : 50 LT). The Ångström exponent was 0.16-0.49 and the single scattering albedo was 0.73-0.91, indicating the predominance of supermicrometer-sized and moderately absorbing particles.

Japan is one of the countries with abundant active volcanoes and has a long history of developing countermeasures to mitigate volcanic disasters. In the field of nuclear energy, it is also necessary to assess safety against volcanic hazards, and in 2009, a voluntary guideline was published as JEAG 4625 in order to set up requirements of site assessments and basic designs of nuclear power plants (NPPs). This guideline has been revised to satisfy the requirements for examining the necessity of considering volcanic phenomena and concrete countermeasures in detailed designs of NPPs. This paper focuses on the background and technical basis of this voluntary guideline and shows the basic policy to ensure the safety of NPPs and the requirements to prevent nuclear hazards due to volcanic phenomena based on the Defense in Depth Concept.

The authors had proposed the revolving permanent magnet type magnetic wheel called the “magnet wheel”, which have both functions of induction repulsive type magnetic levitation and thrust. In this paper, the relation between magnetic poles and lift force or thrust characteristics is examined to grasp the performance. Five types of magnet wheels are discussed in the experimental study and four more types are used in the theoretical study with the three-dimensional numerical analysis. The following parameters are considered, they are magnetomotive force (mmf) of permanent magnet, thickness of magnet in magnetizing direction and the total volume of magnets, fundamental factor and distortion factor of the space mmf distribution of poles, pole pitch, diameter of magnet wheel, mechanical clearance, thickness and resistivity of conducting plate, etc. The result cleared the following. 1. The lift force per magnet volume is nearly proportional to the fundamental factor of space mmf distribution of pole. The low degree space harmonic mmf is effective to increase lift force. 2. The driving power per lift force is almost independent of configuration of the primary member including pole arrangement and position against the secondary conducting plate respectively, and only depends on the resistance of conducting plate. 3. In both the “partial overlap type” and “tilt type” magnet wheels, many number of poles with the sufficiently large pole pitch is useful. In the tilt type the use with a small tilt angle is desirable.

[1]LHC 実験の新粒子探索では、大きなバックグラウンドとなるQCD 相互作用が問題になるが、その QCDの特性を研究し新粒子を探索する新しい方法を多数提案した。[2]宇宙に存在することが明らかな暗黒物質を含む模型について総合的に検討を行い、LHCでの模型の検証可能性を明らかにした。[3]ヒッグス粒子の発見に伴いRandall-Sundrum 模型, 超対称模型等についてHiggs の性質の測定で新物理を詳細を明らかにできることを示した。電弱対称性の破れの背後の物理や標準理論で説明できない諸現象(暗黒物質、バリオン数生成、ニュートリノ質量)とヒッグス物理の関係を研究した。

Monitoring of volcanic phenomena close to active volcanic vents and inside active craters is needed to predict change of volcanic activities and to understand dynamics of volcanic eruptions. In order to carry out safe volcanic monitoring, we have developed a prototype of a mobile sensor for volcanic observation "HOMURA" which is a new robotic system that has been designed to observe volcanic phenomena inside active volcanic craters. HOMURA is a small unmanned ground vehicle (approx. 780×560×300mm in dimension and 10kg in weight) with six wheels driven by electric motors and it is operated by wireless remote control at a distance of more than 1km. Data measured by some sensors in HOMURA are sent to the base station in real time. Materials of the vehicle body and wheels are aluminum with 2mm thick and plywood with 9mm thick, respectively. HOMURA can climb up and down a rough surface with slope angle of 30 degree. In addition, HOMURA does not readily become undrivable even in overturning during climbing because it has a unique body shape with a horizontal symmetry plane. HOMURA can be made and transported to mission fields at small costs. These allow us to make a new vehicle even if HOMURA should be lost by accident during missions and promptly to explore a sudden volcanic event by HOMURA. In test campaigns at Aso volcano and Izu-Oshima volcano, we confirmed that HOMURA has planned abilities on moving on rough surfaces and wireless communication.

This study clarifies the applicability of a sensory evaluation to easily determine the life span of frying oil on the fried food cooking in the kitchen. Two types of foods, i. e. , a chicken fillet and potato, were deep-fried coated with two types of flour, i. e. , potato starch and wheat flour. Frying was continued until the flavor score of the oil had dropped to 3. A sensory evaluation of the frying oil and each fried food was then carried out. The life span of the frying oil to reach the flavor score of 3 was slightly longer for the potato compared to the chicken fillet. It was suggested that the scores for the viscosity and rancid flavor of the frying oil corresponded to the flavor score result of the frying oil. The flavor and taste of the potato fried in the oil with a flavor score of 3 were not good. However, it was difficult to judge the degradation by the appearance of the fried chicken fillet coated with potato starch. The flavor score of the frying oil corresponded to the rancid flavor of the frying food in any case. The color of the frying oil and the taste of the fried materials varied case by case. These results suggest that the flavor score of the frying oil is a useful and easy method to determine the life span of frying oil in the domestic kitchen when a potato starch or wheat flour coating is used.

文献データベースと電子ジャーナルをリンクするシステムとして,リンクリゾルバが利用されている.本論文では,文献データベース,電子ジャーナル,リンクリゾルバそれぞれのアクセスログを解析することにより,リンクリゾルバの影響の分析を試みた.この結果,データベースの検索結果からリンクリゾルバを経由して幅広い分野の雑誌タイトルに利用者を誘導できる効果が確認できた.このとき,リンクリゾルバは,PNASやScience,Natureなどの総合科学雑誌と比較して分野に特化した雑誌へ多くの利用者を誘導している.特に,Web of Scienceのような収録範囲の広いデータベースの利用においてこの効果は顕著であり, リンクリゾルバの導入は特定分野の雑誌論文の可視性を高め,利用に結びつける効果があることを明らかにした.The link resolvers provide links between articles published in electronic journals and bibliographic databases. We report on analysis of the log files of a link resolver, bibliographic databases and electronic journals. We have found that the link resolver can lead users from bibliographic databases to electronic journals in a wide range of research fields. In addition, we found that the resolver would lead users more often to journals of specialized subjects than to those of wide subject coverarge like PNAS, Science and Nature. This effect is remarkable in use of generic database like Web of Science. The former are usually accessed to e-journals websites whereas the latter are more frequently accessed more than before as a result of references from the link resolver.

政府が保有するデータの公開と利活用を行う「オープンデータ」が注目を集めている。わが国においても政府が「電子行政オープンデータ」を策定するなど,政策課題として取り組み始めたところである。本稿では,こうしたオープンデータについて先行して取り組む欧州の政策動向を概説することにより,オープンデータの概念,経緯,および推進上の主要な論点を明らかにする。とりわけ,データ公開の現状,政策的取り組みの経緯,データのライセンス,民間とのコミュニケーション施策を取り上げる。こうした欧州における先進動向を踏まえ,今後日本が進めるにあたっての課題を考察する。

Has mutation research contributed sufficiently to the genetic risk assessment of chemicals? The answer may be “No”. Although it has contributed much to predict carcinogenicity, how much benefit has exposure prevention of those mutagens brought to public health? It is suggested that the proportion of human carcinogenesis related to environmental chemicals is less than 10%. The main causes for cancer are tobacco smoking, diet, and aging. As genetic toxicologists, we have become too satisfied with a qualitative evaluation of mutation assay results and try to detect as many “carcinogens” as possible. This approach ignores the quantitative evaluation, which is more important in risk assessment. Many “carcinogens”, especially socalled non-genotoxic carcinogens, do not cause cancer at the human exposure level. The “genotoxic non-carcinogens”, if they exist, may be more important because cancer is not the only toxicological outcome of genotoxicity. We should pay more attention to heritable genetic effects of chemicals. An increasing incidence of smoking among young women alerts us to investigate the genetic effects of smoking in their progeny.The paradigm shift from hazard identification to risk assessment is important in mutation research. In this regard, quantitative, mechanism-based, and humanized mutation assays are required.

本研究では廃棄物焼却炉から排出されるSPM、PM2.5の実態を明らかにすることを目的とし、実際に稼働している廃棄物焼却炉(4施設)における排ガス中のばいじんを集塵装置(バグフィルター)前と煙突前で粒径別に捕集してばいじん量の変化を測定し、また電気集塵機が使われていた同一施設における1998年の調査結果と今回の結果とを比較することで新旧集塵装置の評価を行った。4施設の煙突前の排ガス中ダスト濃度の平均値は1998年時点に比べ1/200以下に低減されていた。全粒径ダストの集塵効率はいずれの工場においても99.97%以上であり、設備更新前に比べ上昇した。PM2.5の集塵効率については99.93%以上であった。最新式の排ガス処理設備が導入された廃棄物焼却炉からは一次粒子としてのSPM、PM2.5の排出は極めて少ないと考えられ、また1998年の調査結果と比べダイオキシン類対策の効果が認められた。
